Breaking Bad: Season 5 - Episode 5 & 6 - Patreon Version

Comments

Eric Mc Daniel

Just wanted to point out (nicely) that this season didn't debut in 2008, it was 2012-2013. The show debuted in 2008. in 2004, Cranston would have been still in Malcolm in the Middle at the time. Anyway, can't wait to finish this :)

Ballsac McGee

Some movie recs: Inside 2007 Infested 2023 The Clovehitch Killer 2017 Bone Tomahawk 2015 Dinner in America 2020 Red Rocket 2021 (also the rest of sean baker's filmography, Florida project and tangerine in particular) And def watch pig 2021, my favourite movie of the last several years. Also, sidenote: I'm sure you're going to watch Bill and Ted's bogus journey at some point, you should check out the seventh seal before you watch it. I think it makes that movie funnier.

Amar

Keeping up with the joneses is a movie with Demi Moore.

MacGuffinStuff

Goldbricker I've heard, Walter calls the Big Lebowski a goldbricker, from what I understand it implies someone is like a mason laying bricks as if they were made of gold, as in being lazy and taking way too much time to get a job done, or acting like their job is more important than it is.

Tony E Crumpton

Jesse Plemons aka Todd aka Kristen Dunst's husband has become one of America's most respected actors. He started as a minor but fan-favorite character on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and now stars in Martin Scorsese films. He also has the best scene in Alex Garland's CIVIL WAR.

Stugotz

The kid waived hello, Todd waived goodbye.

Moon Logic

Jesse says "bitch", because in America, misogyny is less upsetting than excrement or coitus or whatever else. Simone can probably attest that they say "bitch" on Buffy a lot, but that is pretty much the only swear word they use.

Justin

Jesse did say no one can find out... Jesse's character arc over this whole show is remarkable. He's unrecognizable from the stonebag you meet in season 1. For that final sequence I love how much time they spend on the train coming down the tracks, it really sets the tone for the scene and builds tension beautifully- nothing feels rushed or drawn-out. It looks like an old western- with Heisenberg being the Jesse James. I also like the correlation between Todd & the tarantula and how they took opposite decisions when placed in similar situations. In the beginning the spider has a perfect opportunity to bite Drew & at least try to escape being caught in the jar. Todd is also given an opportunity to hurt Drew so they don't get caught, and he does so. Todd is presented as scarier or more of a threat than the spider. At the end the spider is trapped in the jar & Todd is a free man... As Jesse is leaving the lab Walt is whistling a hymn called 'Lily of the Valley'. Walt's "Empire Business" is even a called back to 0206 when Walt brings up Gretchen's empire business during their discord with each other. 0508 has 0206 references as well

Fun fact, there's a fan theory out there that Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead are connected. Fans speculate that Merle from The Walking Dead got his "blue crystal" drug (that's 99.1% pure) from someone peddling Walt's meth. The dealer was described as a janky little white junkie that liked to use the term "bitch" - just like Jesse ;) Junior's car makes a couple appearances as well. It's an intriguing theory. So did Walt inadvertently cause the zombie apocalypse? You decide 😂

Brad Lowry

After your impressions of people speaking old slang words, you've just got to check out, "The Hudsucker Proxy" among the least loved Cohen Brothers' movies... but to those such as myself, that still makes it an amazing film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgX1clgR-7w

Justin

At least we pronounce the English language the correct way

TechPriest

'Blockbuster' originating from the 40s is a bit macabre. I was pretty sure that *had* to mean it was originally a reference to ordnance used in urban fighting during WW2. Sure enough, the original use was literal. "The term 'blockbuster' originated in World War II, where it was used to describe a large, powerful bomb capable of destroying an entire city block. The term was first used in the American press in the early 1940s to describe these massive bombs, which were dropped by Allied forces on enemy cities."

Jeff K

Yeah, isn't there an Easter Egg in like, the first season or TWD where Daryl has a bag of the blue on his motorcycle, or something? I swear I remember something like that...

Jeff I.

The Florida Project was okay for me up until the last 30 seconds or so, which ruined it for me. That final scene was too jarring and poorly executed.

Honey Hermsen

Damn, that intro was boring. A few months ago (I think) you've asked what would be the most boring subject to talk about in the intro. This is it.

Vwlss Nvwls

All I can say is buckle up, the real fun is coming.

jim Howe

So when this is over you're going to watch 'Barry'? Nice.. looking forward to it 😉

NareikAC

Jesse's teeth are so nice for someone who was a meth addict

DripCarayBBX

I unironically closed a job application cover letter with "Word" once upon a time when we were encouraged to show personality. It worked so I'm not sorry. I still say "Word" to this day, though with increasing irony as the years pass.

clh35

Interesting that bomb now means the opposite of blockbuster.

Stephen Tordoff

Walt's story about selling his share of Gray Matter always reminds me of the 50-60 or so Bitcoin I sold for a few dollars each in 2011 (current value ~$3.5-4 million USD). It doesn't bother me most of the time, but I can't help but occasionally ask myself "What if?". Realistically I probably would have sold them soon after even if I planned to keep them initially (I never though Bitcoin was going anywhere long term, and always expected it to collapse, so, say, $100 or $100 per coin would have been hard to turn down), but that what I sold for few hundred dollars has been valued in the millions for the past few years is hard to ignore.

Honey Hermsen

In defense of Todd: Jesse specifically told him nobody could know about it.

Ian

Speaking of Community, that would be a fantastic watch!

clh35

For the record, the plan was always to take 1000 gallons of the stuff and replace with 900-some gallons of water, because it's heavier. So Walt wasn't being extra greedy by trying to get up to 1000 (no more than his normal greedy).

ThePVO

Ricky Hitler, little did we know.

Steve H

I remember having a Hi-Fi in the sixties.,

Justin Leone

Most of the slang terms, especially from the 80s till the present, are from AAVE (African American Vernacular English), which is a way of speaking that tends to be denigrated by white people, until we start using it ourselves, and then it becomes trendy.

Justin Leone

Saying "bollocks" is a negative exclamation, but if you say that something is "the dog's bollocks", that means it's the tits (which is to say "it's the best").

Ballsac McGee

I think the gold brick thing is because a brick made of gold looks shiny but is useless as a brick

Zinphad

Tuco uses the term 'vig' to describe interest in season 1. Short for vigorish

Glass (+ the Machines of God)

Dammit, George actually remembered the kid before the end of the episode. Most people totally forget about him by then, and it comes as a total shock. But, regardless, he didn't predict what was gonna happen.

Max Hassam

This show certainly is the dog's bollocks! haha it's a positive phrase in the UK. Couldn't tell you why lol. The heist episode is superb entertainment and, whilst the following episode of the fallout is a bit slower, I really like it because it examines Walt's psyche. His bitterness over his decision to sell out at Grey Matter and want to now be in the "Empire business" really says a lot about his villainous streak. But as Jesse says, why a meth empire? The dinner scene is so funny, Aaron Paul plays the awkwardness so brilliantly. Can't wait for the next 2!!!

Rory McDonagh

Can't wait for next week, two banger episodes that you'll love. Enjoy your vacation and keep up the great reactions!

Ballsac McGee

Idk, I don't think feeling remorse for the horrible things you do or loving your family while you do unconscionable things on the side makes you any more redeemable than if you don't show any outward signs of remorse. Mike and Jesse, despite their "redeeming qualities" were completely ok with keeping a drug and murder machine running like a well oiled machine. Mike is basically just bitter that he and gus lost to walter. Every arguement he could make against walter applies ten times over to gus and moreover, from walt's perspective, they killed a kid and then threatened walt's family. It is so pathetic of him to expect walt to not respond. Jesse, I will say has more heart than either Walt or Mike, but even he is completely ok running the drug and murder machine as long as he doesn't see the death and suffering first hand. this is probably my 5th or 6th rewatch and after all this time, I have gained a slight respect for Walter when comparing him to Jesse and Mike. All three are savage criminals, yet Walt seems to be the only one who has any self awareness about what kind of work he is doing and why he's doing it. There is no "righteous" way to do this, there is no way to avoid collateral damage, this a game of power and money and that's all Walt cares about. He's the only one among the three who knows what kind of business he is willingly in and he's in it a 100% instead of pretending like he's above it like Mike or ignoring his guilt until he can't anymore like Jesse.

Patrick

It makes sense for George, growing up in China. But I'm pretty shocked at how many of those slang terms Simone had never heard before.

Ian

Also it was 10000 gallons not 9000, Walt wasn't being greedy. If it wasn't accurate they would have all been caught

Tom M

I’m halfway corned rn. Word.

Dan Holmes

Next two episodes are bonkers :)

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

About the pork pie hat, it just works doesn’t it? Hats aren’t really common to men’s wardrobe nowadays aside from baseball caps and the older style of the pork pie just calls to mind old school gangster fashion or something of the like. That Bryan Cranston can be so easily doodled with the hat on and be instantly recognizable to his character shows great instincts on part of the wardrobe department or whoever chose that hat.

Jay

That's one adorably content cat you've got there, Simone:)

Philipp Roensch

The impact from perfect train heist, to terrible child-killing business is so devastating, a perfect twist episode. Understandably, everyone wants out of Walt's blast radius, except for Todd, that maniac. That glorious Jesse meme with drinking awkwardly, golden. Prepare for more quotable moments :D.

E. D.

George, BB didn‘t start 2004, it started 2008.

Tom M

Lol. Welcome to the real Todd. Dead-eyed Opie motherfucker

PIG

Long live Dave Porter!!!! Can you imagine this show without his incredible score?

Jay

I love Walt, Skylar and Jesse's dinner scene, Aaron Paul shows some real comedy chops. Currently rewatching the last season of It's Always Sunny. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul appear as themselves in one episode. It's absolutely hilarious.

Patrick

He was with Jesse and Walt. He wasn't in position to make that kind of judgment call and take that initiative.

RipTheRipper

TV requests: - My So Called Life

Bill B.

I demand a full Patreon ep with George only allowed to use old timey words in the old timey accent! 😀

JCR

Todd has officially arrived. Enjoy his, uh, dedication to tradecraft. Also, regarding Walt’s feelings about killing kids, he poisoned Brock purely as a means to an end, just saying.

Bill B.

I wonder the etymology of “cat burglar”… I always imagined a guy who goes around and steals cats. 😂

Pasemi

I'm a little puzzled that george feels the need to keep explaining the idea of liking the main characters of the most popular TV show of this century even though they're bad people. People who don't get it by now never will; it gets a little grating after a while.

Actuarial Lurker

So Walter IS Jesse James....he commits the largest train robbery in US history

Bill B.

Gotta disagree about Skylar. Yes she only has a fraction of information but that’s part of the point. She is making a ton of assumptions. But most importantly, for as evil as Walt has become, he loves his kids just as much. She is assuming he doesn’t and is willing to put them in danger, and she’s dead wrong. Part of the reason the nursing home blew up was because Gus threatened to kill Walt’s kids. Skylar has no idea of that. She just assumes she knows best and that Walt wouldn’t do anything for his kids.

Actuarial Lurker

And Todd beats out Walter as the biggest Dead-Eye Psycho

zak

In regards to Walt's hat, they originally gave Bryan it so he wouldn't get sunburn on his head, but over time they realised how useful it was for representing the Heisenberg in him.

An Inanimate Fucking Object

Yeah, but their kids are 100% safer outside of their house, full stop. Literally so many times when threats showed up to their house because of Walter. She is not assuming he doesn’t love his kids, but she is making the completely rational choice to keep them out of potential harm’s way—while he is operating based purely on ego, not rationality about what will keep his kids safe. Do you not understand that Gus wouldn’t have threatened his kids if Walt wasn’t engaged in the drug business? The amount of cope to defend Walt is wild

Anna Komnena

Season 5 episode 5: my personal favourite episode of Breaking Bad, a stellar moment of TV history. Ironically, George "ruined" it a bit for them by remembering the kid midway through ... :-D

DyLusiionz

Just a heads up, Breaking Bad takes place in 08-10 and ran on TV from 08-13. Thanks for another awesome reaction!

Shane Driscoll

I don't buy for a second that Mike would leave Walt alone like that. There's no reason Saul couldn't have handled the restraining order gambit on his own. Or at the very least he should have had Jesse come by to keep an eye on Walt.

Angzarr

Even knowing what happens to the kid, the beginning makes me so nervous! One small accident on the motorbike and he lands on that jar and gets killed by a shard of glass to his chest.

Thoko

I disagree. The restraining order was a bluff. You can't bluff a cop if you're not even in the room. A person facing serious prison time (10+ years) who doesn't even turn up to defend themselves is going to make the cops become suspicious and violate the order somehow. And if he left Jesse there, Walt would use manipulation to get out of the situation. Like pretending to be sick or making threats or deals

Thoko

No way. Glass shatters into small pieces that can't reach your heart. Also, the force of his body on the round surface pushes the glass towards the ground and flattens the shards. And the shards will be behind a layer of denim which is very strong. With the shards at that angle they probably can't pierce the denim

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

As a bit of a jazz nut, I remember that Louis Armstrong had a tune early in his career called “Muggles” as an ode to his love of cannabis. Did not know the rest, fun clip.

E Dubs

When I was a kid in the seventies, my mom always would say "Sh!t a gold brick" when she was annoyed with something. Never heard it anywhere else, but still use it today!

miniature

You don't understand why people are discussing their opinions about characters? In a reaction video? Really? Also, what do you mean just enjoy the story?? The two aren't mutually exclusive. It's not like they're not enjoying the show, one can enjoy the story AND talk about their opinions of the characters.

Nick Kessler

Over the next episodes you will see perhaps the best writing and acting by Jesse Plemmons aka Meth Damon of a physchopath/sociopath ever put on film.

Nick Kessler

People look up stock for a company they have 500 dollars invested once a week for decades. The fact that he knows 1/3 of that company could be his. He used to know them very well. Nothing weird about checking their value while he's already reading that part of the paper anyway.

REDR58

If you guys want to check out a fun train robbery film, look for “The First Great Train Robbery” aka “The Great Train Robbery” in the US. It’s directed by Michael Crichton, based on his novel “The Great Train Robbery” from 1975. It features Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland. Well worth a watch.

elias rinis

"What's that guy's name, Todd? WTF Todd???"🤣🤣

jimmy2k4o .

in the last reaction george was amazed that seasons 1-4 were all in one year, then here he says that this season is in 2008 stretching back to 2004.

Itbewhatitbe

you do realize that the time the story takes place in is not 1 to 1 with the time the show is released on tv right? like the story takes place in 1 year. but the show is released between 2004 to 2008. how is that not immediately obvious?

Thall

Always reminds me of the George Carlin bit.. "Where are all these goofy fucking names coming from?"
