This is a great movie. I couldn't watch the long version because for some reason mine is a different cut. Not a different speed because of different encoding which happens a lot, but a totally different cut. Random scenes are edited differently. So strange.

This movie is very well made in-and-of-itself, but one of the things that makes the twist work so well is the fact that we EXPECT the psychiatric staff in a movie to be capital-E “Evil”. The idea that they may actually want to treat their patients with kindness and respect is anathema to the entire thriller film genre. The film definitely works hard to sell it, but it’s helped by the fact that we’re trained to view mental health facilities with suspicion and mistrust. They’re all Arkham Asylum, or the one from “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest”, or the place Sarah Connor was locked up in T2 with that licking orderly. We’re already looking for the EEEEEEEEVIL!!!!! even before we start hearing the conspiracy theories about mind control. Just because the vibes are off (And make no mistake, the vibes are definitely creep right from the start). The movie lets us sell ourself that lie, and then comes in and says “You were right, this place IS messed up!” And as we’re trying to piece it all together we don’t even notice that it doesn’t make sense. Because they’re correct at the end: We saw him run through the whole island and never saw any experimentation rooms or unexplained technology. We were with him all along, and we just never noticed it.

This is the one movie where you have to rewatch it and show us your reaction again because shutter island first watch and shutter island second watch are two different movies and experiences

Certainly one of my favourite movies and definitely worth a rewatch. Di Caprio's heart-wrenching scream when he's pulling the kids out the lake is tremendous. His is one of the best acting performances I've ever seen.

Fantastic film. I watched this with my parents many years ago. When I talked to them the next day and asked them what they were up to that night they said "Just rewatching Shutter Island". When you watch it a second time and just look at every guard, every employee and every inmate's face it's almost like "how did I not see this this?"
