Next week we're back from our break so here is the new poll with some films suggested by you guys! ***Remember, just because something doesnt win in a poll, it does not mean it will never get watched, but rather be watched later! Polls only help determine 1 of the 3 movies we do each week!

Network! It’s mad as hell. Hidden Figures and Good Morning Vietnam are also great

Carl Noraas

Network is the standout here. Perfect film!

Simone's Coconut Squire

Good Morning Vietnam is possibly one of Robin Williams best works. He does some more impressive acting in other movies, and funnier in others, but in no other movie do you get full on coked out Williams funny coupled with “Oh Captain, my captain” drama.

Onno Smits

With The Intouchables they mean the French movie Intouchables, which had a different title in NA compared to the rest of the world, it seems. It's amazing and totally up their alley.

Random Nevermind

Two movies for the next Social comment poll: Help Don't look up And thank you for that one. Movies in the list are supercool. Just as Cinebinge is

Bookwormy

Oh man, these are so good. Good Morning Vietnam is amazing, but you also are doing Dead Poet's Society, so Robin and Robin is great, and you can see the differences! Erin Brockovich is some of Julia's best work as well.

Dan

Ooh GATTACA would be a good one for this poll too

Zhivko Yakimov

I find "Good Morning Vietnam" trying a little too much, even though Robin Williams is great. Speaking of social commentary, I think "Intolerable Cruelty", by the Cohen brothers, sends a very direct message. I believe the film is not that popular in the US mostly because it hits too close to home. If you want something from Europe, we have a lot to offer on that subject (kind of paints a picture, really). "I, Daniel Blake" is a particularly heartbreaking film by renowned British director Ken Loach. He is, in fact, a landmark director as far as social commentary in cinema is concerned. "Sorry We Missed You" is another recent example of the growing heartless corporate exploitation of common people. From his earlier work, "Riff-Raff" really stands out, in my opinion. If you want something less bleak from Loach, though still with a heavy social commentary, I would recommend "The Angels' Share". Going back to America, another very strong entry, which has been on polls here before, is "The Florida Project", by American director Sean Baker, which makes a really sharp contrast between shiny amusement parks and the surrounding desolation, which almost no one sees.

Mike FromOz

For your next poll, I am highly recommending the film "The Guard". Stars Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle and it's by the same director as "In Bruges". 100% recommend, it's fantastic.

Patrick

Idk if it's a good or a bad thing for numbers, but I can assure you that only 3 channels on all of YT have reacted to Green Book, and both are tiny tiny channels that I've never heard of. Pretty wild since it won both Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actor. It's an incredible movie IMO. My second choice is Hidden Figures even though I've seen it like 4 times. Both movies are based on real stories.

shaneth138

Erin Brockovich is the best one here.

Jean-Dominic Lapointe

You’re missing an extremely poignant social commentary movie: Lord of War

Joe Williams

Network is one of the best films of the 70s. Incredible stuff. Some future suggestions in a similar vein: La Haine The Lobster High and Low

Dirge Girl

John Carpenter's THEY LIVE (1988)... ... Social commentary on Reaganomics and the elite.

Joshua White

Man, Good Morning Vietnam has the production, plot, and acting you'd expect in a major mainstream film, but it actually challenges the audience to think about their place in the world. I can't begin to express how much I hate Forrest Gump and how its white boomer nostalgia shits all over every culture it comes up against. Good Morning Vietnam could have been like that, but it isn't. It treats the Vietnamese with respect and compassion. Even the gay guy who owns the restaurant is accepted on his own terms.

Skip577

I really hope Green Book doesn’t get top 5. Nice but cliche AF,

Lachlan Caldwell

Best Social Commentary movies: Lord of War. The Island.

Viilutaja

Good Morning Vietnam and The Intouchables (which hollywood decided to copy and fail miserably).

Senec

Its entirely possible that I'm uncultured swine, because I havent seen any of those movies. If I had to pick one to watch for social commentary, I might just rewatch Idiocracy :)

Calvin

1976 Network predicted the future of Reality TV. One of the best screenplays of all time. Writer Paddy Chayefsky was prophetic with this incredible scathing satire.

Dechevalier

Falling down (Michael Douglas) What Dreams May Come (Robin Williams) 13 Hours (John Krazinski) American Sniper (Bradley Cooper) Sneakers (Robert Redford) Mr Brooks (Kevin Costner) The Hurt Locker (Jeremy Renner) These are all excellent (and entertaining) films. Some got the recognition they deserved, most did not. I doubt you'll be disappointed with any of them.

Adam K

Let’s see love for Erin Brokovich and Hidden Figures. Fantastic movies. Strong female leads. Hard pass on Green Book. Way too cliche.

Raven Dark

I love Good Morning Vietnam, but I'd have a concern with a reaction to it. A lot of references in it are to moments in history or to pop culture stuff that happened at a time a lot of younger audiences are unfamiliar with. Practically every second line has a reference plenty of people no longer understand. I've seen a number of people watch that film and fail to grasp so much of what is said that they can't really "get" the movie. The mental gymnastics the movie forces modern audiences to do become an exercise in frustration. This is an opinion, so no one jump down my throat here. It's coming from someone who struggled to grasp a lot of the film the first time I saw it when it came out, when a lot of what's said was still a part of people's mindsets, and who still struggles to understand some of it now. I spent so much time trying to work out what the hell the main character was talking about half the time that it seriously stunted my ability to get invested in the film, and I'm old enough that it shouldn't have been hard to understand. I love this channel, though, so whatever you watch, I'll be here with you.

Vincent

Network 👌🏽

brian burke

i picked HIDDEN FIGURES and NETWORK, they are ok but not great, but GREEN BOOK i hear is awful, and the real guys family denounced the film as a lie. just to mention. i would also recommend these good social commentary films, DO THE RIGHT THING, GLORY BLOODY SUNDAY (ireland version),there are other movies called that) '71, AGORA, ANIARA and STRANGE DAYS, technically the last 2 are science fiction but has a lot of social commentary to it too,

Tim T—

"And Breathe Normally" (2018) is an obscure Icelandic movie which I've only seen at a movie festival in a medieval Hanseatic city in Northern Germany – but for some reason it’s the first movie which comes to my mind for the topic "Social Commentary". So, if you want some Hipster-Cred for your channel, knowing bands that others never even have heard of …

Michael Buhl

George and Simone NEED to watch Network! Some of it is dated, and it can get a little heavy on business talk, but overall it is extremely prescient. There is a reason that Paddy Chayefsky won an Oscar for the screenplay of this movie. There isn't a better commentary on broadcast media out there! I think it would be right up George and Simone's alley!

Ben Towle

Glad to see promising young woman losing. That movie is vile

meadow anderson

both hidden figures and erin brockovich are incredible and make me sob

Jeff K.

Good Morning Vietnam was one of the first R-rated movies I ever saw. Still remember when my parents watched it before they'd let my brother and me watch it, in a hotel room in Washington DC. Good times.

Chris B

Seen all. Best in my subjective opinion is Intouchables..which will be far from winning because the majority of people won't watch sth requiring subtitles and listening to some strange French language ;))

Raven Dark

Oh. also, this might be a weird place to mention another movie, but have you guys reacted to the movie Nobody? I could have sworn you did, but I don't see it on here, so maybe I had you confused with another channel. If you haven't seen it, you should. You'd both love it. It needs to go on the next poll, unless you decided to watch it without a poll. Oh, and also, my suggestion? If you watch Nobody, DON'T look it up. The more blind you go in, the more fun you'll find the film to be.

FWPJR.

Never seen any of these lol so I’ll leave it up to the people who have actually seen them. And I’ll say it again until you watch them, please react to Young Guns 1 and 2.

MPH

Lots of underappreciated gems in this list. Just watch them all.

JayF

Another movie that fits this category is Experimenter (2015). It will probably get no views but it was very impactful.

JayF

I expected Good Morning Vietnam to run away with this one and it's very good. It's nice to see Erin Brockovich and Hidden Figures doing so well though.

Maiki

Bit sad, yet quite expected that Intouchables doesn't get a lot of love here. Such a funny and wholesome movie. But happy for Hidden Figures and Erin Brockovich.

Sam Ferguson

These are all excellent, but 'Good Morning Vietnam' is one of the best films ever made. Even if the story wasn't incredible, even if the supporting cast wasn't amazing, even if the subject matter wasn't so important, it'd still be worth watching for Robin Williams' performance alone. Thankfully, all of those things are true. So it's really a can't-lose from every angle :)

sarCC

Some movies with social commentary I highly recommend: His Girl Friday All the President's Men Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Heathers Do The Right Thing But I'm a Cheerleader Josie and the Pussycats Blindspotting Sorry To Bother You Cam The Nightingale Violation The Fallout Triangle Of Sadness Bottoms American Fiction

Gerard DeLuca

I just watched Civil War (2024), and OMG! If you want social commentary, I can't wait til you guys react to that. I'm hopeful you'll do it before the US election this year.

paul rai

Hope Network gets more votes. One of the best movies of the 70s and an incredible array of performances and actors. Incredible monologues and astute examinations of media and corporate confluence influencing societies.

jmundt33a

Four classics, a searing relative newcomer, a foreign language heartstring-puller, and…Green Book. For its flaws, very entertaining. Like *gags* A Beautiful Mind. This would have been a good spot for Bombshell or She Said as well.

streaky

"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this any more!" - still voted GMV though :) There is really only one scene anybody needs to see in that movie, and it's _so_ applicable in 2024.

Brendan Rafferty

For social commentary, Network should win. How is Good Morning Vietnam a film about social commentary?

Jeff Boice

Network and Erin Brockovich. 🙂

Philipp Roensch

Oh, Promising Young Woman is soo good, hope to see it one time. Settling in for the Hidden Figures rewatch.

JoeE

Would also recommend dog day afternoon, marathon man, sing street, anatomy of a murder, kingpin

G P

Recommending: Barry Lyndon Eyes Wide Shut 12 Monkeys Dollars Trilogy Best In Show Midsommar The Royal Tenenbaums Blue Velvet Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

The Gunslinger

"Do you know what every woman's worst nightmare is?" You have to watch Promising Young Woman at some point. Carey Mulligan is incredible in it.

Watch This! with Joe and Kevin

Green Book is oversimplistic to the point of being racially insensitive. One critic described it as the "I have a black friend" of movies.

Mathew Hill

Sad to see Promising Young Woman not doing better on the poll. Uncomfortably powerful. Must watch.

Kinokind

Good Morning Vietnam is fun, but it aint Network. Network won four Oscars, four Golden Globes and was directed by the great Sidney Lumet, who directed 12 Angry Men! C'mon.

Dan Holmes

Great films but not what I would expect for social commentary other than network. Check out: Falling Down Thank You For Smoking The Edge (1997) (I just want you to watch this one lol)

overdev

I hoped for Thank You For Smoking :(

peter mcconnell

With all due respect to the other films, but Network is hand over fist the best film listed. It’s one of the best films of the 70s, and it continues to be every bit as relevant and important as the day it was released.

cincassette

"The Lives of Others" (German: Das Leben der Anderen) is an incredible social commentary set in communist East Germany.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Fun poll idea, figured Robin Williams would be taking the lead but not mad about that. Gonna use this as an opportunity to check some of these out on my own as I haven’t gotten around to some but have heard promising things. Want to shout out a couple of gorgeous animated movies that deal with women’s issues in the Middle East, “The Breadwinner” and “Persepolis”.

Travis H

Voting for Network and Erin Brokovich. Wall-E would fit the next social commentary poll well. I try my best not to say anything negative about movies because I know people don’t like hearing people be negative on things they like. But I am absolutely thrilled Green Book isn’t doing well.

CorpusD

Network is somewhat prescient, but it’s bast part is I’m mad as Hell and I’m not going to take it anymore. Ah those simple days when you only had 3 networks…

Jeff K.

Throwing a random classic film out there: The Best Years of Our Lives. It's a film about three WWII veterans re-adjusting to life after the war. It's phenomenal.

Amar

This a top list of movies. All incredible movies, never hard of Network though. My favourite on this list is either Hidden Figures or The Intouchables. It excites me that these films are even being mentioned

Lee Meehan

Intouchables is a great movie.

jmundt33a

Dabney Coleman films to look at Nine to Five, Tootsie, and The Man With One Red Shoe. Also Cloak & Dagger.

Bastian Rinsche

Please watch the Intouchables at some point. You could consider a foreign movie poll and include it if it doesn't win this one 😏

Happy Hanukkah

"Social Commentary"? Sure thing, boss. [/clears throat, loudly declaims:] O tempora, o mores!

DonkyDave

It's a shame Glory wasn't on the list because it's a banging film

RipTheRipper

Some Nice choices..I knew before I voted for Promising Young Woman that it would be near the bottom..I fear not many have seen it... I do hope it gets a watch in the near future..it is top notch... The one that looks like it will win will be a fun reaction even if it would have been at the bottom of the list for me

Jay Davis

Gotta throw in with Network here (though it likely won't pull through). It's a classic... or maybe I am. Hmm.

RipTheRipper

Requests: - Good Boys (2019) - It Follows (2014) - Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) - Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997) - Mean Girls (2024) - Immaculate (2024)

pedantech

Good morning, Vietnam!!

Thomas Hilbert

Hidden Figures! Great movie, really touching.

Miles E Coburn

"Good Morning, Vietnam" (1987) is funny, great movie. And Robin Williams does a terrific job in it. But "Social Commentary"? Eh, no.

Haye Zeus

Only voted for Network. Before The Simpsons, this movie predicted everything.

AstralCars

This poll is missing Do The Right Thing (1989) and Parasite (2019)

Daniel Bjork

Some good choices here. Promising Young Woman is outstanding.

Richard Burrell

The Green Book should be winning this by a mile! Madness!

Scraz

Dang, I misread The Intouchables as The Untouchables (1987) and I got excited. It’s not a social commentary though. It’s one of the classics that everyone should see IMO.

Alex

How Green Book is so low? Such a great film

BubblyRainbows

Ugh... "Good Morning Vietnam" is winning? It aged so badly. I love Robin Williams, but 70% of the jokes are pop culture references from the 60s and 70s. You have to be at least 45 years old to even get most of them. I spent half the movie thinking "I know that was supposed to be a joke, but I have no idea who he's talking about." And I can't say more without spoilers, but certain things are downright creepy. It's hard to believe they weren't back when the movie was made.

Brandon Meng

I feel like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri would've been great for this poll.

Michael Johnson

Network is a classic. And eerily prophetic.

CD

Good Morning, Vietnam huh? I have a hot take…but I’ll save it, for post-reaction. It’s a bit of a spoiler. Hope Erin Brockovich holds on to 2nd here!

Cameron Cross

Love The Intouchables. It was a very memorable film. Also voted for Erin Brockovich and Network. It seems I'm not in tune with people anymore. I haven't favored nearly any poll result with any reactor in a while. At least Robin Williams is great in the winner here.

HeyHeyJK

Well, I'm 'mad as hell' that "Network" is in 4th place (but, sadly, I have to 'take it' some more). So incredibly prescient for being made in 1976 and still so relevant today, sadly. It's a film that, like "12 Angry Men" - with both films being directed by the great Sidney Lumet - I could see G&S being completely blown away by. Not that it will influence the voting, but ... #64 on AFI’s 100 best films of the last 100 years, multiple Best Actor (posthumous), Actress, and supporting acting awards; Best Director at the Golden Globes and LA Film Critics; Best Screenplay awards at the Oscars, Golden Globes, LA & New York Film Critics, and the Writer’s Guild of America; and inducted into the National Film Preservation Registry and the Producer’s Guild Hall of Fame, just to name a few. It was also adapted for the stage back in 2017, first in the UK with Bryan Cranston and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), then later on Broadway with Cranston and Canadian actress Tatian Maslany (Orphan Black). It's simply one of the greatest films ever made by one of film's greatest directors. Oh well. Since it will likely never win a poll, I beg G&S to watch it on their own. And anyone else who hasn't seen it (which I'm guessing is a huge part of Cinebinge's primary demographic).

Maiki

Remember guys. It's in a poll, so it will be watched. I feel lots of you a lot of times at polls, but eventually the time will come!

Tyler Foster

Taking some other suggestions from the comments here, I think a better "social commentary" poll would be something like: • 9 to 5 (1980) • Blindspotting (2018) • Brazil (1985) • Do the Right Thing (1989) • Face in the Crowd, A (1957) • Parasite (2019) • Taxi Driver (1976) • They Live (1988)

Zinphad

Ironically, a popularity contest amongst Social Commentaries might not give the best results. Would love to see a Social Commentary poll where you voted for the one that made you most uncomfortable.

Rob Church

I'd like to see American History X or Mississippi Burning reactions in the future.

Rachel W

'Network' is absolutely brilliant and so prescient it's scary. It's actually more relevant today than when it was released. And has fantastic performances winning 3 of the 4 acting awards at the AA. As well as Best Screenplay. It's also wickedly funny. A great social commentary film never mentioned in the comments is "Norma Rae(1978)", a fantastic film that Erin Brokovich tried and failed to be. GM Vietnam is basically Robin Williams doing Robin Williams schtick set in Vietnam w/little if any social commentary.

Anamondaris

The first movie I thought of for this list was Spotlight(2015). Amazing cast and performances

Jeremy Smith

You guys will love Network whenever you get around to it. I have to agree with Rachel’s assessment of Good Morning Vietnam, but majority rules!

rictus grin

one that might fit here is Ken Russell's The Devils (1971) if you can find a copy the B.F.I (British Film Institute) release is the most complete version of the film available

Matthew Johnson

Erin Brockovich is the movie that should have won Soderbergh his directing Oscar. I’ve always felt that they gave it to him for the wrong movie. It’s def the best Julia performance by far. I watched it recently and it’s just as good as it was 25 years ago.

sarCC

Oh, and since it's Memorial Day here in the U.S. I'll also recommend the 2018 film Overlord. It's a great World War II movie about a vital mission on the eve of D-Day. It's a unique, satisfying movie that's best-experienced going in cold. Try not to look up much about it beforehand.

Logan Kerlee

Happy to see Good Morning Vietnam doing so well. :) Amazing film that's VERY worth the watch.

AstralCars

Just wanted to pile on to the Network passion here. If anything, there’s a really funny gag in one of the first episodes of Better Call Saul that references Network that will go completely over your heads without having seen it.

jmundt33a

Ghosts of Mississippi.

Date Mike

Erin Brockovitch... this film is sooooo overrated

NareikAC

Forgot to upload breaking bad

YukoValis

To be honest the Glass Onion (A Knives Out Mystery) would fit in this category as well.

Darin Foat

You've got Dead Poets Society coming up, and it looks like Good Morning, Vietnam might win this one. If you're not overdosed on Robin Williams after that, I would recommend The Fisher King and Awakenings.

Renee MeowMeow Beans

Not surprised at all that Good Morning Vietnam is winning! 🙂 I'm pulling for Erin Brockovich to get 2nd. An incredible based-on-a-true-story script, directed by Steven Soderbergh. I only watched it for the first time last year, and it's soooooooo well written and shot. Albert Finney and Julia Roberts are amazing together. 🤞🤞

Phillyman!!

On the next horror poll. Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon 🙏🙏

VariantsWatchMovies

Maybe River’s Edge (1986) could be an add for your next social commentary poll.

Nathan Jasper

Getting Straight (1970) and 1969 (1988) would be great social commentary choices

John Richards

When I look at this poll, I think "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more"!

sol stapleton

Nope would fit this poll perfectly

Wookalar

Falling Down needs to be on this list.

Cinebinge

just fyi friends, we had a little whoopsies in the poll. I've seen network once so it's only new to george :)

John Richards

For social commentary, I recommend "Spotlight"

Jordan Barnes

I’m surprised there are so many Brockovich fans, it was a movie from a childhood I remember watching a lot but cuz my parents did. I’m gonna scroll to see the results of your age poll.

Logan Kerlee

I'm very happy that Good Morning Vietnam is leading the poll! Makes me happy. It's a movie that my mom enjoyed quite a bit years ago. She's no longer alive - but she'd be happy that a group of people are watching it. :) Thanks for being awesome, Patrons! <3

Renee MeowMeow Beans

This is totally out of left field, but I was thinking a bio-pic poll would be fun. Generally I find biopics fairly boring (most follow the same beats in every movie), but there are exceptions that are great! (I'm actually thinking Weird - the Weird Al biopic as one. 😆) Community thoughts?

jmundt33a

Somehow Promising Young Woman ended up last.😮‍💨

ManuG20dt3

Wow, surprised Promising Young Woman is dead last. I wonder if most people haven’t seen it. Good movie, hard to watch sometimes but I would watch again with Cinebinge. Hope to see it again on Polls soon
