O captain! My captain!

AC10

Oooo... I've never watched this. Omg it's Rated SO HIGH TOO!!!!

Renaissance Man and School Ties are excellent

jmundt33a

That’s Josh Charles. He was cast, then had to re-audition when the production fell apart the first time.

I may be Scottish but if the bagpipes played every morning where I live, I would knock that guy out.

“I love his standup, 500 words a minute version” - well then George, you’re going to love GMV.

Phillyman!!

Another great Robin Williams movie is One Hour Photo. Can’t recommend it enough 💯👍

This came out the summer before I started high school and it was hugely formative and I still really love it (though the Knox story hasn't aged that well). There's a contingency of people who REALLY hate this movie and can't wait to tell you how much. I love the behind-the-scenes stuff and what a special relationship Robin Williams had with those young actors, even long after the filming.

Simone finishes every thought with "I don't know" 😆

Oh Captain, My Captain!

I took this movie to watch after finals my senior year of high school. The bell rang right as Neil reached for the gun and the class EXPLODED when the teacher paused it, but she had to. I was a *greatly* disliked person and I thought everyone hated the movie, and would hate me more for bringing it in because they were dead silent throughout until that scene happened. Just such an incredible and profound movie. I’m so grateful to my dad for showing me gems like this throughout my life.

I had two teachers who really made me feel seen and respected as a teen. One was my English teacher Ms. Hicks who brought me in a movie poster from 300 (she knew I loved the movie) and was so wonderfully expressive throughout her classes. When someone used all caps in a paper she would YELL the line at top volume and ask, “Is that what you intended?” Another time a class clown had to write an essay on the origin of curse words and read it aloud as “punishment” for being too liberal with cursing (rural kentucky school), and she knew he loved every second of it because he was in the spotlight cussing in front of the whole class with permission, using air quotes around every cuss word in his essay. He started respecting her class more after that. Another was my French teacher, who made up a position on the prom committee for me because he knew I wouldn’t be elected for anything (I was an insecure and condescending bitch, it’s a popularity contest). He saw my self-awareness and abilities better than anyone, and he’s the only teacher I’ve ever had on social media lol.

I was SO stoked when I saw this on your poll, this is such a fantastic movie for you two specifically.

“How to make sure your kids never visit you at the old folk’s home…” made me go 😬

Darin Foat

This was directed by Peter Weir, who is one of my favorites, in part because he has such amazing range. Who would guess that Master and Commander, Dead Poets Society and The Truman Show were all directed by the same guy? If you want to check out another great film of his, I'd recommend Witness. It's the only film that ever got Harrison Ford an Oscar nomination.

Classic.

I admire their shock of parents stifling a child’s passions when they think the passions are not “practical”. I would argue parents supporting is the more unlikely scenario.

Dan Holmes

alright i'm pausing at the midsummer part cause they are obviously misreading everything and i am dreading the next few minutes lol

Christina Doxstader

Couple of suggestions based off this movie. School Ties which is about another boarding school in the 50s, beware the ginger in that one too by the way, and the movie Gallipoli which is about two Australian young men, one of whom is played by a young Mel Gibson, who go off to fight in World War I. It's by the same director and incredibly powerful.

Terry Yelmene

Robin Williams was all of our Captain!

3dbadboy1

Ohhh, I remember that paddle, we called it the Board of Education, lol.

Jeff K

Since y'all are on a bit of a Robin Williams kick, and as I'm currently rewatching the Austin Powers in Goldmember reaction and seeing Nathan Lane pop up in a cameo, AND since it's Pride Month, you should totally watch The Birdcage if you haven't seen it. I saw that movie on my first date in high school when I was 15, and it's still the movie that got the most uproarious laughter from start to finish of any film I've ever seen in the theater.

Bill B.

I’m a teacher, and every August before school I watch this to get inspired, ready for the upcoming year. I also watch School of Rock, school has to be fun 😀

beefjerkywizard

Birdcage is a wonderful movie. I also feel they will appreciate the Simpsons connection with Hank Azaria

Simone, we also did a community theater production of Midsummer with gangsters. The thought process for us was , it allowed us to somewhat modernize the setting, while still keeping the life or death stakes of the lovers intact. Our Duke did a great Brando/Corleone impression.

Chase Lonnergan

When I was with a Shakespeare company in Austin, we did the same thing with Richard III, which is honestly the perfect gangster story anyway. I never considered Midsummer in that way, but now that you say it, I can see the potential. Good idea!

IncredibleBulk

Love this film, but have to say jack (1996) is one of my favourite Robin films. Amazing film with a great message

brian burke

school ties is good, also stars young matt damon and ben affleck, in respond to george asking about about schools and teachers, my high school in illinois was so violent and i had several people trying to kill me, most teachers didnt care, but i had one good teacher named ms. guccione, she stood up for me, i went looking for her years later to thank her, but she had retired and they wouldnt let me contact her, but she meant alot, i had to drop out months from graduation because it was so violent and i had to move away from the town. i still need medication today to help me with PTSD.
