Don’t fuck with Mr. Zero (if I recall correctly, I believe that scene was based on an idea for an SNL sketch that Billy had because he thought it was hilarious to contrast a very serious conversation with having to get up and do the wave throughout)

I kind of love this movie. It has that easy comedy timing where the dialogue just flows easily between them and the chemistry is really good between Ryan and Crystal. And while Hanks/Ryan is still my favorite rom-com pairing, especially Joe vs. the Volcano, I always wished that these two had done another film together.

Jeff K

I think this is hands down the best rom-com ever made, in large part because of how good the dialogue is and how easy a chemistry Crystal and Meg have together. Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby help elevate it as well, and the comedy - while still often cutesy - has a harder edge than most romantic comedies.

This was slap bang in the middle of Reiner’s hot streak - stand by me and princess bride before and Misery and A few good men after - Incredible run of films

I live in NYC and have been to Katz Deli many times. If you're ever here, I highly recommend it. Apart from the movie connection, their pastrami sandwich is amazing. I'm sure 100 people will mention it, but the woman in the diner scene who said "I'll have what she's having" is director Rob Reiner's mother.

Jeff K

Other tiny bits of trivia: you guys probably know this but the “I’ll have what she’s having” lady is Rob Reiner’s mom. Also, in the scene where Billy starts talking in a funny voice talking about pecan pie he was just fully riffing. You’ll notice Meg laughing and saying “oh no…” and looking to the side. She was looking at Reiner basically asking “What do I do?” and obviously he just kept rolling on it.

Welp, we all now know what George's 'O-face' looks like 😂 Great thumbnail once again 🤣

if i recall correctly, the stories in the little couple vignettes are real, but the people telling them are actors.

You ask what is the originator of this style of movie. It must be Annie Hall. This film owes a it's existence to Annie Hall. And as for running, I hope you get around to The Graduate, which is the ultimate running-to-find-her film.

Jeff K

This movie poster is even very reminiscent of the Annie Hall poster, too.

If you're looking for some other rom coms outside of the more formulaic ones I'd suggest 500 Days of Summer and/or A Life Less Ordinary

Jeff K

I'd be very curious about their takes on 500 Days of Summer. I really enjoy that movie, but the discourse surrounding it has been very interesting, including JGL himself chiming in about his character.

George, if that's your "O-face," ... my reaction would be Simone's face. :-) :-)

Hamesque

George looks high and Simone looks like she's reading on the john.

Christina Doxstader

If you want to see another Billy Crystal movie with Bruno Kirby (the lieutenant in Good Morning Vietnam, I'd highly recommend City Slickers which also feature Danial Stern, AKA Marv from Home Alone.

Hamesque

Did you guys know that when the women in the diner kicked the helmet she actually broke her toe?

Dan Holmes

TIME TO WATCH CITY SLICKERS :)

Hollis Hamilton

In Ted Lasso season two episode five, George was confused when the old couple in the stands broke the fourth wall. Simone explained it was from a Rom Com, but didn't name the film. I hope he gets the reference now that he has seen When Harry Met Sally. Once Simone gets him to watch a few more Rom Coms, he should rewatch that episode to appreciate the references. I recall Simone really enjoying it and George being mostly confused.

Honey Hermsen

The Graduate is the first movie that comes to mind doing the "running thing"

Gatsby

Please watch The curious case of Benjamin Button😊

Bill Campbell

For some weird reason New Yorkers pronounce Houston as "Howeston" and not the proper "Houston" like Houston Texas.

Ken Schneyer

Lovely reaction! I agree with Simone's analysis that the older romcoms (going back to the 1930s) made it a serious question whether the characters were really going to become a couple. There's a newer film (Past Lives (2023)) that really explores this question and its implications seriously.

James Falato

From what I've heard:The woman watching/saying "I'll have what she's having" in the restaurant scene regarding Sally's Orgasm was the Director's - Rob Reiner - mother who was a noted character actress... While filming the scene, Sally wasn't "animated" enough and Rob Reiner actually took her seat and showed her how crazed he wanted her to be, and when done he stopped and openly remarked "Oh no! I just had an orgasm in front of my mother!"

Who Are These People

TV Tropes calls it 'Race for your Love', when someone runs to catch their true love before they get away. It cites the oldest example in a movie as Harold Lloyd's 'Girl Shy' (1924). You've seen it before in Liar Liar, Crocodile Dundee, and Back to the Future III. TV Tropes also mentions the use of the trope in P.G. Wodehouse's story 'Uneasy Money', from 1916. Incidentally, Simone, if you've never read P.G. Wodehouse, check out some of his short story collections featuring Wooster and Jeeves. They're about a airheaded wealthy English gentleman Wooster and his smart and practical manservant Jeeves who is constantly having to save his master from boneheaded bumbles. Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry portrayed the duo in a British TV series back in the '90s.

Who Are These People

They're named after different people, William Houston vs Sam Houston, but also, come on, NY 'How-stun' is closer to standard English pronouncation than Texas' weird 'Hew-stun'. They don't say 'Come visit my hewse!', so why say 'Hew-stun'? Weirdos.
