Black Mirror: Season 3 - Episode 3 & 4

Comments

PIG

Two great episodes.

Śéáń

Two of my favourite episodes for radically different reasons..! I've been personally looking forward to this week since this show watch was started.

BigGuy209

San Junipero is my favorite episode of this series. if i had to choose one out of all of the technology that is shown in this series. I would choose this one. 😎🤙🏻

Deserana12

This run of the last four episodes are peak Black Mirror to me. There are still some great ones left but also way more middling/poor but these few episodes are just amazing. Honestly no idea if I’m in the minority but I’d say Season 5 is completely skippable. The others have at least a standout episode.

JediLounger

Thanks as always for the entertainment guys. Looking forward to Star Trek tomorrow. George tell us about your new cat!

Jay

Don't think you're in the minority in not loving S5. I personally think those 3 episodes are very good. It's season 6 I'm not crazy about.

MoonageDaydream

Could not wait to see your reaction to the twist in Shut Up and Dance. The whole time you feel sorry for him and wonder why he’s freaking out so much about the video then it hits you with that bombshell. And San Junipero is a fan favourite of the entire show. Incredible episode and definitely in my top 3! Gonna watch that now 😁

Mark McKeown

Two great eps. Will be curious to see how you tackle Bandersnatch when you get to it

JediLounger

If you guys want to see more of Mackenzie Davis, Halt and Catch Fire (2014) is fantastic, I would love an excuse to watch it again.

mojo shivers

Not only do I think “San Junipero” the best episode of the series, but I also think it’s the most hopeful of the series in regards to what the future holds for humanity. It’s definitely the least cynical about it. I also love that it’s just a classic star-crossed lovers setup that doesn’t end in tears and misery.

Tay Schumaker

As others have said, two fantastic episodes. San Junipero is widely held as the best episode of the whole show, and it’s hard to argue against that. And Shut Up and Dance is a classic Black Mirror gut punch. I’m happy Simone gets to end on San Junipero. Hoping it brings her some joy

Amar

San Junipero is the happiest episode along with Season 4 episode 4 "Hang On DJ". Love this episode so much.

Da Big Appa

Please add Halt and Catch Fire to the next TV show poll.

beecroft adams

For me San Junipero doesn't have a happy ending. We got the cliches of upbeat music and driving off into the sunset which hides the truth. They're in a digital hell not paradise. Imagine being in a world forever. How many years could you take before you go mad. The quagmire was an example of those who will do anything to feel something. The only way out is death. How miserable you would have to be to kill yourself. Given the choice of when you die how much could one bear. Our survival instincts are strong we would hold on till the point of madness. I thought Nosedive had the happy ending. It starts with her practicing her fake smile. By the end we saw her first genuine smile. Even though she is in prison she is free. San Junipero isn't an extra life it's just a delayed suicide.

Jay

On the SJ Wiki page, this quote from Charlie Brooker is great - "I'd read people saying 'oh no! It's going to get all American!' so I said fuck it. I'm going to set it in California, fuck you. I'll choose protagonists that wouldn't necessarily leap into my head, and I'll explore a hopeful use of technology to shut up people who think it's written by the Unabomber"

Piep

Damn, I´m already hyped for BM S04E01. With the stuff they are watching until then... it will fit so perfectly. And i already know Simones first words when they start the episode. "OMG, fucking ...!" ;)

Ryan Alexander

Kenny probably wouldn't be in that much trouble with the law. Looking at those images is illegal, but if you aren't making or distributing them the punishment isn't that severe. Everything else was done under coercion. Doesn't excuse him entirely, but he wasn't doing it of his own volition. The fight at the end he can claim self defense, tried to run, other guy chased him down initiated the combat, should walk on that one.

Alexrandom

Started eating supper during the second episode. Great idea, now I'm crying in my fries!

MrDorry

I love San Juniper. My absolutely favourite episode. So sad but also hopeful. <3 Future is not all doom and gloom, there is also a bit of hope.

Astraeos

I can't be the only one who laughed out loud when George said "How old is he really?", during the Shut Up and Dance conversation. It's literally the Chapelle bit. Also I really, really cannot wait for next week. The first episode next week doesn't get as good of a rap as I think it should, and Hated in the Nation I think might be Top 3 Black Mirror episodes, for me at least. So I'm very interested to see the duo's thoughts on both of those episodes, very much.

G P

S3 is awesome! Probably the best of the series. Interested to see how you guys handle Bandersnatch (assuming you watch it).

Superpotroast

San Junipero just not really my kind of episode..I like Black Mirror when it's dark and twisted, but this is a good place for this episode right after the Shut Up And Dance.. At least it's a better love story than Twilight..

Kozmo

Black Mirror by the title is a just the reflection effect of the black screens of technological devices like phones, tv, etc. Technology is the main thread for this show not the horror or thriller tone. Also what a double feature !!!

Kozmo

An idea for your next live is to do a Black Mirror tier list for what you seen so far. People have widely varying opinions on the show.

Kozmo

isn't that technically more season 4 than 3 not that it actually matters lol

Kozmo

it'll never win a poll but yeah for Mackenzie Davis alone they should watch it

Tenwyn

San Junipero is all nice and good until they decide to shut down the servers 😂

JokerDanny

I think you 2 would love Inside No.9, a similar British TV show each episode has a twist

Chris B

if it were a "typical" Black Mirror episode, at the very end, when they show the server building, there should be a lightning bolt just hitting the building....and cut to black ;)

sarCC

It's about that feeling when you find the person you connect with more than anyone else and wanting to be with that person forever. It's a happily ever after ending.

Hunterrim

As much as I liked ‘Exit Music (For a Film)’ at the end of episode 3, I think Karma Police could’ve fit perfectly as well!

Chris B

So..regarding Shut Up and the Dance and your conversation that "there's nothing worse a person can do". Let me play devils advocate here. I need to preface this (becasue it's social media) that I do realise that it's a very sensitive subject and in no way I accept or think that child pornography can be excused. It's terrible shit, of course. But just for the conversation... I think there are plenty of worse things you could do than Kenny did...including the people that actually use children, take the photos or make child porn. I'm not excusing Kenny in any way, but you could argue, if he is indeed e.g. 16 years old, he might be a lost, troubled kid, in the middle of puberty, confused who needs help. Right? No? Or "fuck him, let him die" ?

Stephen Tordoff

For me, the darkness in San Junipero is what's left unsaid. You're effectively creating a cookie (White Christmas) of yourself, and we've seen how they can misused. There's a lot of questions left unanswered, and I suspect many of them wouldn't have good answers: - Can you be copied? - What motivation does TCKR Systems have to run San Junipero? Is an upfront payment enough to run the simulation indefinitely, or are they gathering people for more nefarious ends? Coupled with point 1, could there be another copy (or copies) of you being forced into doing menial tasks for eternity? What we see could just be the marketing/front. - What happens if TCKR Systems goes under? Do you just blink out of existence, or are you an asset to be sold off to the highest bidder? - How much control do you have (and can it be taken away from you)? Could you find yourself being injected into a different simulation against your will? Can you 'die' to remove yourself from the simulation? How big is the simulation? If you're forced to live for an eternity in a limited simulation, is that _really_ something you want - how many (subjective - the simulation doesn't necessarily need to be running in real time) years/decades/millennia will it be before you are desperate for a way out? The story we see is beautiful, but the technology needed for it, and the world in which it exists, has the potential to be horrifying. I always think about MMAcevedo when thinking about whether I'd want to be uploaded like this - https://qntm.org/mmacevedo

Sergio Meira

"The bad people are still kind of good people", says George. I think that's what always hits me when I watch Shut Up and Dance. If you want, think about Walter White in Breaking Bad: Vince Gilligan said his mission was to go from Mr. Chips to Scarface, to make Walt a heartless criminal, without making him ever lose his humanity. Kenny here also never loses his humanity, from beginning to end. Perhaps one of the worst things to accept when we think of 'bad people' (criminals, child pornographers, murders, you name it) is that they are not -- could not possibly be -- DEFINED by what they did, because they ARE human and therefore are more than that, or, worse yet, they share a lot of what they are with all other humans, including, yes, us. 'Bad people' are... people. It's hard to accept this fact, but evil committed by people is, well, committed by PEOPLE... there's no way to avoid that. People who have other sides, who may enjoy music, who may even (like Kenny) actually just want to make a little girl smile, since they aren't dominated by their impulses to be evil every single second of their lives. However much we'd like evil people to just be a different species, one that we have nothing to do with... we have to admit they are US, too. We're all the same species... An Ancient Roman writer, Terentius, once wrote: 'Homo sum, nihil humanum alienum a me puto'. I am a human, and nothing human is alien to me. We'd like the Nazis (whose death camps George visited) and pedophiles and murderes ... to have nothing in common with us; but they do. They are every bit as human as we are. Which is why I can feel sorry for the 'bad people' this episode portrays, including, yes, Kenny and his child pornography. I hope this all makes him a better human being somehow. Suffering makes us grow, and Kenny has had and will go on having a lot of suffering. Similarly for the cheeting guy, and for that black guy. We should always strive to be better... even the worst among us.

Jeff I.

Shout out to Alex Lawther as Kenny! Easily one of the best acting performances in the series.

Sergio Meira

As for San Junipero... Who knew there was beauty in Black Mirror, and that one episode would be the first romcom that made George cry? :-) I can understand those who see San Junipero, as all 'perect VR' environments, as a temptation that might destroy us as a civilization... and the most difficult thing to believe in the episode is that they could keep this technology, this INT (immersive nostalgia therapy) as something limited to terminal patients -- I wonder if in that world they aren't suffering from possible civilizational destruction via emo kids who just won't abandon their perfect VR paradises. But I think this episode is as good a reminder that there are good aspects to such technology as all the other episodes are that there are bad aspects to technology. And I think that's important -- to not lose perspective of something you guys had mentioned since Ep. 3, namely that it's not the technology, it's the people and what they do with it.

Tay Schumaker

This is not true at all. Possession of child pornography is a felony and a federal crime in the US. It carries pretty significant prison time and registering as a sex offender in most states

Future Boy

I love the song choices for San Junipero: "Heaven is a Place on Earth." "Girlfriend in a Coma." "Fake." "Can't Get You Out of My Head." "Living in a Box." "Don't You Forget About Me."

Jonas Buckner

Of course I don't condone what Kenny or the other guy did. That is an horrific crime. That said, it's amazing how people can watch these and be both disgusted with the punishment in White Bear in one breath and, in the next, say that being beaten to death is too good for the guy who looked at child porn. White Bear is about what it means to "deserve" punishment and why society has a right to get revenge on people who have done wrong. Should Kenny be given a White Bear Justice Park type punishment? Why would that be too much or maybe not enough? If society deserves to have his justice/punishment/vengeance, then how can we determine what is too much?

Corabal

Black Mirror was originally a Channel 4 (another UK channel) production, not the BBC

Sergio Meira

By the way, for any future polls concerning (small) series... may I suggest the incredible "Barry"?

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

UK way of doing things is more realistic. The US's need for a happy ending is why this country is in such a delusional state because now Americans think they all deserve a happy ending or at least will get one and that's just not true.

Corabal

Simone mentioning the guy being nice to the girl at the beginning, in the background you hear "That's the way I like it" playing out

Jay

George, on your "betraying the original thing" comment at the start. I remember an interview with Brooker after S3 came out. I'm paraphrasing but he said they always wanted to make the show unpredictable, and by season 3 it had become predictably dark and pessimistic, so they wanted to mix it up from that point on. Don't worry, the show still goes to dark places most of the time, just not every episode:)

Travis H

As I mentioned previously I don’t watch Black Mirror it’s too dark for me and I don’t need that in my life. With that said when San Junipero came out I kept hearing from critics that I trust that you must see that episode. So I eventually tried it and went into basically like Simone waiting for the shoe to drop and for it to go into misery. San Junipero has since become one of my favorite tv episodes of all time of any series, it’s a beautiful masterpiece that gets better each time you watch it. And I get emotional any time I hear the song “Heaven is a place on earth”. And to repeat what others have said you two should really watch “Halt and Catch Fire” even though it will never win a poll (maybe as a future Wednesday show). It’s about the computer industry in the 80s and it’s an underrated masterpiece.

Odd Thomas

For more Alex Lawther I highly recommend the series The End of the F***ing World, and Ghost Stories, a genuinely creepy British horror.

Jesse Coombs

Halt and Catch Fire is fantastic. Almost as good as Mackenzie Davis' other show: "Station Eleven".

Allen Pass

Was not a fan of episode 4. Instead of advancing that VR technology, why wouldn't they try to advance actual medical technology to cure people like that...

JBK405

You are ONE HUNDRED PERCENT RIGHT on the first line of that reaction.

Shane Driscoll

I think the bleak tone had less to do with it being British and more to do with it being inspired by the Twilight Zone, a show that always loved to end episodes on a down note.

JBK405

San Junipero EXPLODED when it came out. Such a clever subversion of every expectation for this series. It also came out at a very unique time for the portrayal of gay and bi women on TV: 2016 specifically was a year when SO MANY gay women on TV shows were killed off for "drama" and "shock". Each time the showrunners offered the same excuses "This is where the story took us" and "Nobody is safe on our show", but people crunched the numbers and the statistics were WILD (I honestly don't remember the specific numbers anymore because it's been 8 years, but they were nuts when it compared how many gay or bi women appeared on TV that year versus how many died on-screen). It happened over and over again, to the point where there were actually real life street protests in LA over the way it seemed almost deliberate and sadistic. I know some people who live in the area who participated. Then this show, which is famous for being SO pessimistic and dark and "Nobody's safe", featured two women who are in love with each other who actually LIVE TOGETHER FOREVER. With the beautiful ending with the music and eternity. I believe in an interview Charlie Brooker was asked about this and if he did it on purpose, but he said that he had no idea it was "a thing" and instead just did what he thought was be the appropriate ending for the episode. Plus he wanted to throw off everybody who thought he was predictable and could only do depressing.

mky

Black Mirror gives you San Junipero as a reward for how crappy the other episodes made you feel.

ClaryTehSage

Kenny should’ve looked up what Shrive meant lol, maybe he wouldn’t have downloaded it.

Eric G

The "Upload" show on Amazon explores the concept of a digital afterlife. It's (mostly) a comedy though. I think it'd make for a good short series for reactions... but it'd never win a poll. lol

REDR58

So, the “creepy”guy you saw on the TV screens at the beginning of San Junipero is “Max Headroom.” Portrayed by actor Matt Frewer in heavy make up filmed in front of a blue screen, Max Headroom was a artificial intelligence being that hosted his own television show. The character debuted in a cyberpunk-themed TV movie called “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future.” it was then turned into a series television show which ran from 1985 to 1987 for about 30 episodes. The character is referenced in “Back to the Future Part 2” and probably a number of Simpsons episodes I can’t think of right now. He also featured in the number of commercials at the time and some other movie cameos since then. Here is a quick documentary about the character in the show: https://youtu.be/egCOO7Zzq0U?si=e1M7YVRq1UA-Rr3q “Max Headroom 20 Minutes into the Future” full episode: https://youtu.be/aZY-yQYVf38?si=O9CRFl8NdxxorjCa The series proper can be streamed at a number of digital services.

Jacob King

Fake, Girlfriend in a Coma, All we have is this moment, 21st century’s yesterday… the music cues in San Junipero are great on a second viewing. Is there plans to live stream Bandersnatch?

REDR58

One clue that this setting is not “real” is that the cars have “San Junipero” on the license plate. In the US at least, other than Washington D.C., no license plate only shows a city.

REDR58

Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha-Raw) who plays Kelly has appeared on “Doctor Who” and in the “Loki” Disney+ MCU series.

Sergio Meira

That's something I've heard people ask lots of times -- why advance technology X rather than technology Y? The basic answer is, because we don't know which one will be easier to advance. Look at the old predictions of the 50's about what the world would look like after the year 2000. Flying cars and honeymoons on the Moon, flying jet packs, etc... but nowhere anything about personal computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones... the internet... actual AI rather than "Computer! Answer this question!" and "Danger Will Robinson!" and "Does Not Compute, Aaaargh!". If you'd ask me what I'd like technology to solve next, I'd say aging. Find a cure for aging. Let's live hundreds of years! If you ask me what is more likely to happen... VR worlds. We're much closer to that now than we are to actually solving aging. Why? Because it turned out -- nobody could have known beforehand -- that VR is apparently an easier problem to solve than actual physical immortality. Of the problems we're now trying to solve, which ones are really easier and which ones are really harder? Only time will tell. And some answers will be surprising.

megamoo chilli

In ep 3 I missed the line about kids on the first viewing, didn't get it until the very very end. When you watch it again there are creepy clues with kids and how his work mates act towards him in the beginning.

Mark McKeown

Don’t know if you noticed, but the beeping that plays every time they progress by “a week” is actually the same sound Yorkie’s door makes when the Doctor enters

megamoo chilli

George is on board with the San Junipero technology. Oh dear. You are so going to get off board. (Thinking specifically of a future episode - starring Todd from Breaking Bad.) Tech can be heaven or hell depending how its used, who is using it. The social commentary is there.

Christian Poss

"Kenny" is really good in End of the fucking world. It is such a great show.

HeyHeyJK

So, in one very specific and weird way, episode 3 is my favorite episode of the series because it led me to discovering what is now one of my favorite TV shows of all time. After watching that episode my whole soul just felt dirty and I immediately started to try and find something else to watch to try and wash some of the 'ick' out. As I was scrolling through thumbnails on Netflix I saw one with Mackenzie Crook, who played Gareth in the British "The Office" series, and appeared in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films. The series was called "Detectorists" and co-starred character actor extrordinaire, Toby Jones. I decided to check it out and it was the perfect antidote I was looking for: a slow, very British and very funny series about 2 men and their metal detectors in rural England. Created, written, directed, and starring Mackenzie (who went on to win a BAFTA award for it), it is 3 seasons/series of perfection and it is just lovely and wonderful and I rewatch it often. I think you'd both love it.

HeyHeyJK

I love 'The End of the F***ing World' so much. I've suggested it a few times here for G&S to react to but it would never win a poll - especially a short series poll - since I don't think enough people know about it. I was perfectly happy with the first season being the only one, as was originally planned, but then really liked season 2 a lot, too, although it wasn't quite as good as s1. Such a great 'rom/black-com' ... I guess you'd call it.

SmallWoodenDuck

Really not sure I agree that the series gets more uplifting. I think there are just more episodes per season after the change to Netflix, which gives them the scope to mix it up. Some of the more uplifting episodes are some of my favourites, but when it goes dark, it goes dark. Even in the later series. I love the fact it does both.

Gary Fixler

I can breathe a sigh of relief. I've been worried someone would say too much and ruin the fun of San Junipero, but it was so far away from when you first mentioned starting this series. So fun. As with a lot of people, this is my favorite episode. I love episodes like this, because I think about them for so long afterwards. Like the clocks are matched to the outside world, because nurses and others interact, and the clocks need to sync up. They don't have to, though, presumably. Like if a genius in the system starts to come up with a cure for whatever is still a disease in the real world, presumably you could put them on their own server, and just overclock it, so they could race to a cure, 100s of times faster. If you live for a thousand years in there, you could live a whole life with someone, get bored, break up, live five more lifetimes with others, almost forgetting about your time with the first person, then stumble into them again, hit it off, and live another whole lifetime with them again, especially if the world gets bigger, so it's not the same 5 places.

iOmegaTron

My headcanon is that San Junipero is powered by the bicycles in the Fifteen Million Merits episode.

Scribbles the Mouse

I hope we get around to watching Love, Death and Robots.

Andrew Koo

You guys are my favourite reactors on the internet. You guys have finally made it to my favourite show of all time, and now at the episode that hooked me on the show, S3E3. Absolutely enjoyed the heck out of this one, George & Simone!

Tcrimson05T

I got to watch this as it came out and I remember on Twitter people were just in shock. Such a good episode. And it sparked so many debates. Like me and my girlfriend at the time had a literal light to our discussion about whether or not we would use this if it was available. And we were on opposite sides of the debate lol

Wrwemi

Shut Up and Dance is for me the most depressing episode of Black Mirror (so one of the best ahah) because this is one of those that doesn't rely on SF-like technology. No bionic eyes or human robots, this is just a story that could very well happen to someone today. You just need spyware, phones, and desperate people.

Harry Fieldson

To answer your question about episode 3, Kenny said he's learning to drive, which makes him 17. In the UK age of consent is 16 - however, I could be wrong, but I think possessing pornography of someone under 18 is still illegal - so the hacker person/people are still on that side of it.

RandomNevermind

I hate “Shut Up and Dance.” The twist is good, but it is the only payoff for an episode filled with desperate guessing, “Why does he act like that?” First, why is Hector so obedient? He becomes part of a bank robbery. If they fail, which is almost guaranteed, he will go to jail. Yet, he shows no concern. Second, the fight to the death? If you get caught watching that kind of porn and committing a bank robbery, a good lawyer might get you 10-15 years. But first-degree murder means life in prison or even the death penalty. Still, they go through with it. There are many small things I hate. How does nobody notice the gun in the cake? Guns are heavy. It’s almost impossible not to notice that a dessert is suddenly 2.5 kg heavier. And the camera on the laptop? There’s always a small lamp that lights up when the camera is on. It’s physically built that way. It’s hard to miss. And I can’t forgive them for making a laptop without this feature just for the episode. Moreover, it’s possible to record him with the camera, not the screen. The screen could be recorded but only separately. Since it should be two different records there’s no way to prove the recordings are from the same event. This episode requires accepting too many implausible details. It fails to show how deeply unethical the events are. Committing a crime is not an excuse to commit another crime against the criminal. Hector committed no crime (if I’m not mistaken), yet he’s blackmailed. How many innocent people’s PCs and phones were hacked before the trolls found all those pedophiles and racists? Kenny’s punishment should be decided in court. We assume his crime is horrible, but we don’t actually know what kind of photos\videos he viewed. Maybe it’s casual non-sexual photos, still disgusting and maybe a crime, but not that severe. He could have been watching a 40-year-old pornstar pretending to be a schoolgirl. I’m not saying he’s good—maybe he was watching something truly terrible that he made himself. We don’t know, but the jury should decide, not internet trolls. Because we don’t see the troll hacker or know his motivation, the events seem like justice, which they are not.

RandomNevermind

I love “San Junipero.” To me, it’s the best episode. It’s the happiest and darkest episode. While we’re so happy for the main characters, we forget something. Who pays for their existence? Can they be deleted for unpaid bills? By mistake? Could they endure eternal pain due to a weird bug? But the second darkest question here is: “Are those dead people in San Junipero actually the people or just copies?” Connecting to the cloud isn’t the same as uploading to the cloud. Those avatars might not be the real people. In that case, Yorki spent 40 years paralyzed, met her love, found hope for a second life, and then died. Her copy gets eternal happiness, not she. We assume the residents of San Junipero are the same, but we can’t be sure. We can hope. We want to believe. But hey, it’s Black Mirror. And the darkest thing: we have no choice. In the discussion, George said it’s the only Black Mirror tech not forced on people. True, but death is forced on us. There’s no escape. There are real-life stories like Yorki’s. We hope technology will give us a second chance at life, but we probably won’t get any chance. It’s like they live in a world that should be real, and we’re in a Black Mirror episode. What about all the people you know and those you don’t? Children dying of cancer? Paralyzed people? Those suffering from Alzheimer? They have no chance to get to San Junipero—not even for a day. That episode is so happy and so dark, so simple and so thought-provoking. It’s so heavy and so happy for me at the same time that I can’t listen to “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” the same way anymore.

Mark McKeown

Well he's atleast 17, rather that definitely being 17. And yeah I'm pretty sure if two underage people are dating, if one has naked photos of the other, that's illegal.

MasterElodin

I've been having a bit of an existential crisis recently and man. I appreciate this comment because I completely agree with it and it is well thought out but fuck is it painful. Makes me flip between wanting to give up and wanting to live my best life when I'm in this mood lol

Michael LaPorte

I think you're looking at it in too rational a lens, when all the characters are highly emotionally-driven - even the perpetrators, whom I imagine are doing this less out of a sense of vigilantism and more just to get their kicks. I agree that there's very little actual hard evidence presented that could incriminate Kenny, given that they could say he was looking at anything; but it's his own guilt and fear that drives him and pushes him to obey. That's the crux of the scheme, it's the tug of a potential negative outcome versus the looming, imminent one that's being threatened.

Eliana

Lmao one of the ugliest episodes followed by one of the most beautiful

Sckmnky

The ending of episode 3 answered questions I had and left me completely shocked and appalled. I was going crazy wondering why he didn't just go to the police before the robbery and why he changed his story to "looking at pictures".

Katzchen1984

San Junipero is such a different , but great episode. For the first 20-25 minutes or so it does not feel like Black Mirror at all. It really does have a great premise and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Young Kelly) has one of my favorite performances in the series. I feel like the show would be kind of " MEH " if they always did this type of episode, but it coming after such a dark episodes like Shut Up and Dance and Playtest it kind of provides a nice balance. My rankings of the show change based on rewatches, mood and new episodes coming out... but this one is usually always in my top 3. The premise, acting, nostalgia, music and story are all top tier.

Katrine Myra

Sat up way too late last night watching this - I've never cried while watching San Junipero, but I did now. It's such a gem of an episode, and the placement of the episode is genius.
