Where my nite owls at? Any one else been up all night waiting for this to drop?

Pam Nail

I was so excited for you guys to see that alien dog! One of my favorite moments of the series!

djKENTO

don’t know if you have touched on this and I forgot, but the DESILU logo at the very end is Lucille Ball’s production company. She’s the reason we have Star Trek.

Da Big Appa

I've been watching on Paramount + and the remastered versions. It's interesting to see the differences in what they chose to update. It's mostly space shots.

E. D.

fun fact: last night I watched the schindler‘s list reaction and one of them (I think Simone or maybe both) didn‘t have noise gate on - there was loud background noise multiple times - so at one point I got scared, had to pause the video and look if someone‘s breaking in my appartment 😆 but then I thought it can‘t be here it must be in the video… only watched half of the reaction because it was late, will continue this night maybe

Darin Foat

They made the remasters in the early 2000's for the Blu-Ray release. The footage with the actors was shot on 35mm film, and the negatives were still in good shape. But the effects shots had been shot on 16mm, and there was a really noticeable difference in resolution. So they redid the effects with CGI. Some purists don't like the new effects shots, but I think they're really well done.

Mastervodo

The more I watch the original series - the more I like TNG. It's SOOOOOO much better. I hope we don't go through 70some episodes of TOS before Simone and George hit TNG.

Darin Foat

The TOS Enterprise does eventually get some shuttles. In fact they play a big role in a couple of episodes later in the first season. But there's never any explanation given for why they didn't use them in this episode.

Brent

Eyy, I love TOS! There aren't too many big channels that are doing the whole run either, lol. I do love TNG and it is equally as awesome! I understand tho and am also excited for some TNG as well!! :) (And the TOS movies of course! :D )

megamoo chilli

I think you guys are right. Shatner is having a ball acting as duplicates.

Monica Alarcon

Unfortunately the shuttles won't be delivered until Tuesday...

WayneC

A Yeoman in the US Navy is an enlisted service member that does administrative or clerical work. Yeoman is not a rank, more a duty assignment. Ensign is the lowest commissioned officer in the US Navy. The starship is operated, in many ways, like the US Navy - the whistle before an announcement for example.

Monica Alarcon

Oh hey, The Enemy Within was written by the author of I Am Legend...

D. T. Nelson

I never got that excited by TOS. I sometimes watched the syndicated reruns that aired weekday afternoons if it was on, but I was never like "I have to see every episode" like I was with TNG, DS9, and Voyager. (mostly with TNG). Once the original cast movies came out, I had to see those in the theater. That isn't to say that TNG didn't have its problems. The show had a rough first season and there are some cringe worthy episodes ("Code of Honor" anyone?). I'm watching these episodes, but I'm really waiting for your reactions to the movies and the series' starting with TNG. ... well, I guess George's reaction since Simone is already familiar with Star Trek after TOS.

windyWin

I am giggling at how Tuvix is being referenced this early in Georges viewing of ST. I asked ChatGPT how long it would take for George to reach Tuvix, for fun. It said: At a rate of 2 episodes per week, it will take approximately 239.5 weeks, or about 4 years and 7 months.

Patrick

LMAO yeah I cant help but wonder if their really gonna stick with it. Star trek is so massive..

Sergio Meira

So, how do you guys like "angry Shattner"? Shattner is supposed to overact and be more than a bit corny even when he's playing "normal" Kirk, let alone "angry evil Kirk"...

Opti_Frog

These two watching TNG and DS9 in (overlapping) release order is my wet dream. Regarding J.J. Abrams' Trek... They actually do some good character stuff, but the problem is everything else. When Abrams got the job, his first question was "How can we make this more like Star Wars?" and that is kind of gross. Taking the smarts out of Trek and making it an action flick was a great way to get the franchise into mainstream territory, but it also means that it's Trek only in the shallowest of ways. It's something pretending to be Trek.

REDR58

And the whistle is called the “boatswain's call” or “bosun's whistle” and is of course blown by the bosun (boatswain).

Actuarial Lurker

The famous Shatner Over The Top acting debut

Paul G

If I remember correctly it was a production issue, the shuttle mockup was still being built. From a canon perspective the ship is supposed to have shuttles onboard already they just can’t use them on this planet due to some unspoken atmospheric phenomenon. Fun fact, the original plan was to have the Enterprise itself land on each planet but the special effects cost of doing those shots were deemed too expensive so the writers came up with the transporter as an alternative.

Shane Driscoll

I will quit this show if that dog doesn't become a series regular.

Paul Peavler

Kirk isn’t actually a floozy, he’s deeply dedicated to his beautiful wife Spock.

Khan1001

Mudds Women started of interesting but fell apart at the end, not every episode will be good/great, its the same with every show that has 20+ episodes per season! stick with it guys! the acting from the main cast is always top notch even in weaker episodes. If anyone is having syncing issues on Netflix, switch over to Paramount plus, its still the remastered version but its in perfect sync with the original version they are watching, the remastered version is doing a good job with the CGI upgrades, the Enterprise looks great, I like all the different angles they give us of the ship, the chase sequence through the asteroid belt in Mudds Women was nicely done & improved using CGI.

Monica Alarcon

One of the earliest Star Trek novels, almost the first, has the same thing happen to Spock. There's also a good Spock and a bad Spock but it's harder to tell at first... it's called "Spock Must Die!"

Zephyr (AD)

So glad you folks are continuing this! TOS has a lot of ups and downs quality wise over its run, but I suspect you will absolutely have episodes that you will consider favorites as you go on ^.^ In comparison to a LOT of sci-fi even just a few years earlier, TOS is such an interesting blend of influences of its time, as well as a major step forward into "modern" sci-fi. I hope you enjoy discovering more of the charm of the show that keeps us fans of the Original coming back to it, even after all these years.

Skyruff

TOS is centered on a ship call Enterprise. The ship is part of Starfleet. What Starfleet is exactly changes over time. At times, in each series it's only Earth's space force which is part of the United Federation of Planets (Federation) and other times the primary space fleet for the entire Federation. The Enterprise is at times clamed to be non-mlitay explorer vessal and other times part of the general military force but with exploration as a primary duty. In real life, Military and non-miliary ships tend to use basically the same officer and enlisted poisitions on the ship to keep operational structure consistant. That way you can move from one ship to another and everyone know what you can do. All of this leads to the show using basic Navy structure and ranks. Officers (Ensign, Lieutenant junior grade, Lieutenant, Lieutenant commander, Commander, Captain) and Enlisted men (Crewman, Petty officer, Chief petty officer, Senior chief petty officer, Master chief petty officer) Something to note, is that it is not commonly understood as it was not explicitly stated in the show but based on general operational poitions on ships...the Chain of Command for the Enterprise went: Captian (Kirk), First Oiffcer (Spock), Chief Science Officer (Spock), Chief Engineer (Scotty), Chief Communications Officer (O'Hura), Chief Navigator (Sulu), etc. Yep, a black woman was fourth in command of the ship. Martin Luther King Jr. was aware of this and help keep the actress from quiting after the first season. A black woman on ship in a central role would have been unusual, to put her in the chain of command was beyond groundbreaking. This also explains why we will occationaly see O'Huru dressing down other bridge crew of the same rank. She is however, never allowed to sit in the Captain's chair.

Huh, I guess my comment didn't go through, well anyway I just wanted to say THANKS! Apparently I'm a Trekkie now, I've always been a Star Wars nerd, I was literally born the same week the first movie opened and it's just, yeah, wizards with laser swords man, I'm all in. But as much as I've always respected Star Trek, it's just now I'm realizing I really love it. Watching with Popcorn restarted the fascination, but she's watching sporadic, voted on episodes, going fast through the seasons, I really love that you guys are going for the long take, I'd never seen any of these episodes (actually I might have but in high school we would stay up late and watch Star Trek but we'd get so stoned I can't remember a single one lol). Anyway, really cool choice and I can't wait for you guys to get the movies, all of which I have seen and they are awesome (okay the first one is a little slow, and there is kind of that thing where the even numbered ones are better than the odd numbered, but still, and frankly I actually liked the Chris Pine movies, particularly Karl Urban as McCoy).

Paul Peavler

If you want to watch all the episodes of TNG right now (since like you said PiB is doing sporadic episodes), Jen Murray is currently doing a reaction of every episode of TNG, two episodes per week just like Cinebinge is doing for TOS. She’s currently up to the end of season 4 on Patreon and early season 4 on YT, so there’s plenty of back content to catch up on.

Ginger

George: "Wow, Kirk is secretly so horny". Everyone: "SECRETLY?" :D

Odd Thomas

Simone has seen First Contact but not Generations? Both excellent films imo. I also love the Chris Pine reboot and I think now she's seen some OG Trek Simone will enjoy that one a lot - at least the first two.

Pearl Jam

So excited that you guys want to work your way through Star Trek! TOS was supposed to run for 5 seasons, hence the “5 Year Mission” in the theme song, but got cancelled after 3. A few years later they continued it with the animated series (TAS), which lasted 2 seasons to complete the 5 year mission. While later series uses some small pieces from TAS, it is mostly skippable. That being said, I hope you watch it. They were able to do so much more with their vision of this universe without having to be constrained by the special effect limitations of the time.

Rupert Purcat

Yes, can't wait till you do the original movies as well. Then Jump to the new (Chris Pine) trilogy - followed by 'strange new worlds' tv trek series. Then, if you must, you can go through the Next Gen ones, which I always avoided because it was not as good as the original in my biased opinion. Sorry Simone.

JBK405

Kirk's reputation as a sex-happy playboy has always been bizarrely exaggerated in the public consciousness. Remember in "Where No Man Has Gone Before", that Gary Mitchell described Kirk in his time at the academy as 'a stack of books with legs'. All of the stories he tells about his own history portray him as a quiet, dedicated, somewhat-nerdy guy. He absolutely is SUPER horny, but the show always shows him keeping that firmly under control because (as cheesy as it is) he really is married to the Enterprise. Or, to phrase it another way, his commitment to duty and his crew always outweigh his libido. Simone is correct that the Chris Pine version from the film reboot is a caricatured exaggeration. I do have a soft spot for "Beyond", the third film, but I don't even count the first two as being worthy of the Star Trek name. It took the JOKES about Star Trek and used them as the basis for the actual characters. This meme sums it up perfectly (No spoilers, just funny): https://64.media.tumblr.com/b8643bb870afb6432b7cac2e489b7c54/4240ce7da7ea405f-57/s500x750/66e1e3e3fda0763a8f9319570aad2c76d17d5657.pnj Regarding shuttlecraft, they simply hadn't been invented yet at this point in the show's production. The transporter had been introduced specifically so that the show wouldn't need to create the (presumably very expensive) sequences for the ship landing every episode. A few episodes from now the writers do introduce shuttles, and they kinda pretend that they've always been there. Regarding bad episodes...oh boy howdy do you two have some bad storms coming. As much as I love TOS it has some STINKERS. "Mudd's Women" doesn't even crack the bottom ten. Everybody has their own particular "Worst of the Worst", but some are ridiculously offensive (And they were offensive at the time, it's not just a question of aging poorly) and some are just so stupid it's unfathomable. But when you get to the really good ones, you'll see why the show stood the test of time.

REDR58

Does “floozy” refer to men (and women) in Canada? In the US it’s pretty much a (now considered offensive) term for sexually promiscuous women. For men, we’d pretty much say “womanizer” (or “f*ckboy” these days!). The Enterprise’s Shuttle Galileo prop from the series, which we will see later in the season, still exists, though it was extensively restored. It used to be in the Houston Space Center but is now in the “Star Trek Series Set Tour” in Ticonderoga, New York: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUjmPJH84dY

REDR58

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the wife of Gene Roddenberry, who plays Nurse Chapel in some of the TOS episodes also provides the voice for the computer in this series, TNG and a number of other Star Trek series.

SpankTheMonk

Like my previous comment of how well the TOS movies work with their characters and dealing with the ends of their journeys (even though they aren’t all phenomenal films, still good and watchable but a bit lumpy). The TNG movies almost forgot everything about what the characters were in the shows and it becomes more about scenario spectacle and so out of characters moments. The Redlettermedia YouTube critique of the TNG movies was actually before their famous tear down of the Star Wars prequels. And they/Mike really tear apart the TNG movies because of how off the stories and actors were from the series.

SpankTheMonk

Also, hopefully you do watch the TOS movies ❤️. I will defend the Motion Picture (TOS movie 1) every-time because to me it does two things well- it tries to add filmatic scope to the way we have seen the 4x3 characters and show, and secondly their coming together after 10 years of the show being off the air (not including reruns)it feels like it should be an awkward reunion where the side mission is getting their groove going and remembering why they cared and ventured together.

Jonas Buckner

The story goes that the only reason Star Trek has transporters is because they were supposed to have shuttlecraft, but the models weren't done being built in time for the beginning of the first season. It lead to some of the most memorable episodes across all the series.

jackthegent

It'd be cool if you reacted to the original twilight zone

Michael Bauer

What makes Trek really special to me is the ethos, the values it has always promoted - curiosity, rationality, empathy, openness, and an appreciation of the fact that diversity is not only beautiful but also can be a source of great strength (represented by the vulcan "IDIC" philosophy - infinite diversity in infinite combinations). It is thoroughly humanistic, and a very welcome change from the moral pessimism that has become so rampant in the stories we tell and consume - the misanthropy, fatalism and tired "it's only 'real' if our protagonists are forced to do horrible things"-trope. It appeals to the better angels of our nature - more than any mass media phenomenon or narrative universe I know. This was right in the middle of the civil rights movement - shortly after the biggest flare-up of the Cold War, and not that long after WWII... so to have a Russian Navigator, a Japanese Helmsman, and black female Communications Officer, and an alien first officer is just fantastic. In the unaired pilot, you even had a female first officer - the network didn't like that, though. I'm very happy you're doing this :)

Michael Bauer

Kirk is famously a character whose public perception is colored more by the stereotypes people have of him and the satire about him than by the actual stories featuring the character. Certainly it's a 60s show where there are pretty women falling for the captain, or trying to seduce him (while he plays along) etc - but his priority is always his crew, his ship, and his mission. He is duty-bound to a fault.

Dan Cipolla

I was reading that Spock's pronunciation of "sensors" was Leonard Nimoy trying to cover his native Boston accent.

Steve Boshear

New Patron, just watching this today - something to keep in mind about the Venus drug and how it transformed the women is that this show was originally intended to be viewed over broadcast on tiny, staticy, 640x480 CRT tv screens. Many of them would not have even had color capabilities unless they were pretty new. So the effect of the makeup changes would have been far more subtle to original viewers. In these 4k copies we have now, you can see every eyelash and wrinkle. Back then, it would have been at best the suggestion of a change.

I Cooley

I think that it's just the way they spoke at the time, to say sens-or. It could be Leonard Nimoy's way of speaking, too. Ensign is the lowest officer rank used in the military, specifically the Navy. Yeoman is not a rank but an enlisted position- assist the engineer, administrative, clerical, a gopher. Specifically, to the Navy.

I Cooley

That blonde guy is Chekov in I, Mudd could be Broccoli's (from TNG) ancestor. ;-)

Patrick - Excelsior

In the military, particularly the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, a Yeoman (YN) is an enlisted service member who performs administrative and clerical duties. This is why they call Rand Yeoman. Its her job designation, not rank. She does the Captains paperwork. That's why she is always carrying a clipboard and having him sign things.
