Ah yes there are spousands of thoonerisms in this world haha. Malapropisms go as far back as Shakespeare, Sheridan and Lord Byron (I think if I remember correctly). Synecdoche, metonymy, polysemy and many more are also other very common oddities of speech we use everyday. Long story short a love of Tolkien led me down a linguistics rabbit hole in my teens haha. Otherwise these eps are great - Michael Mando and Rhea Seehorn become huge standouts in this series

Brad Lowry

Use of Malapropisms is a great comic tradition... most notably to my mind I think of Archie Bunker ranting about some Jewish guy "wearing his Yamaha"... or when the next door neighbor, Irene asked if Archie was accusing her of "proselytizing" and Archie fell back in horror saying, "I would never accuse youse of nothing like that!"...

Chris Noble

George did a spoonerism during the last Saul reaction haha

Brad Lowry

Indeed all the way back in 1775 in the play "The Rivals" by Sheridan one of his characters known for her verbal blunders was named "Mrs. Malaprop"...

Brad Lowry

British humor leans into ironic spoonerisms, if you listen for them they are deftly played in many QI Episodes, thought I can't think of any examples...

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Hahah the line where someone describes her (paraphrased) as “an allegory on the Nile” instead of alligator has lived rent free in my head ever since first reading it xD

Max Hassam

There was a famous spoonerism gaffe on the BBC radio a few years ago. The radio broadcaster had to read out "Jeremy Hunt, Culture Secretary"... you can imagine what he accidentally said hahaha

Brad Lowry

Maybe I've been watching too much of one your competitor who is always talking filmmaker visuals (James vs Cinema) but I don't think it was accidental that the initial shot of Chuck transferring his personal items through the hatch at the prison is visually identical to the visual of Jimmy placing all electromagnetic offending items in Chucks mailbox before entering his house... and this is admittedly in the artsy-fartsy realm... but maybe that is why Vince Gilligan et al chose something as obscure as "electromagnetic sensitivity" for Chuck: That is, Chuck is clearly a genius, but his OCD related malady is crippling an originating, named partner in a major ABQ Law Firm... perhaps he's pointing out that Jimmy is also a genius with a kind of "difference" that holds him back artificially. The impuslivity of ADHD comes to mind, and lots of experts can tell you that Hollywod if full of ADHD millionaires... and also full of "ADHD still bartenders". (FYI, I am of those diagnosed late in life with ADHD... I could yammer on but I did get the above from a renowned Canadian Doctor on an amazing Canadian documentary on the subject called "ADD and Loving It".)

Itbewhatitbe

lmao George are you just thinking of Far Cry 3 in regards to Nacho?

Deadly Ramon

Saul refers to Ignacio/Nacho when Walt and Jessie are holding him hostage in the desert.

lordofcore

i think youre thinking of No-Doze. or any one of the other 7 bald Mexican characters with mustache and goatee hahaha

beecroft adams

I'm glad you're enjoying the show it gets better every season.

Kozmo

By the way the person who plays Nacho is both Canadian and in the Far Cry games if you played them.

Liam Sluyter

More people need to recognise Chuck as the lead singer of Spinal Tap.

squints

I love that Betsy Kettleman made you think of Marie from BB, because her character was named for Betsy Brandt who played Marie!

Kozmo

I also think both of your feelings on Howard are perfectly fine. He is presented as a douche who comes off as more malicious than his actions.

Max Hassam

You may have noticed that the intros to these 2 episodes had a slight blue tinge to them. That is the way the show indicates that it is a flashback to the past. Black & White -> post BB Blueish -> Past Don't be concerned about your feelings on Howard. There's a lot of explanations to come on the relationships between Jimmy, (our protagonist, whose sentiments we tend to share) and Howard. As the show is more of a character study, it goes for gradual, natural exposition rather than getting it all out super quick in the first couple of episodes. The suit shop not only shows Jimmy's preference for quite Saul-y suits, but if you look right above him when he picks out that shirt, you'll see a Breaking Bad Easter egg! Totally agree with both of you about Jimmy's dilemma: that he's trying really hard to not get back into his Slippin' Jimmy ways because of the promise he made to Chuck but can't seem to avoid getting himself into scenarios where his outside-the-law talents are useful. And other people see him as a sort of lowlife too. As Betsy said, they see him as the "type of lawyer guilty people hire" a line worth remembering. Glad you're loving this show already!

Ste Rawlings

Info for Simone: The actor who plays chuck was also the mockolate salesman in Friends.

FWPJR.

Another week, another BCS reaction. I’m ready right now to watch this, but I gotta wait until tonight. So at least I have something to look forward to tonight lol

Tom M

In e3, the rear windshield of the kettleman’s station wagon had one of those stick figure families with a tent. So Jimmy guessed they were camping nearby.

Chris Henderson

In the suit store you could see Gus's signature yellow shirt and tie.

E. D.

🎵 And they say that a heeeero could save us I'm not gonna staaaaand heeere and waaaaiiiitt🎶

Trevor S Bright

Yeah, Nacho is a new character introduced in Better Call Saul. The other 2 guys with him and Tuco were in Breaking Bad though. Easy to get mixed tho since that was all the way back in end of Season 1 & start of Season 2. Feels like 1 million years ago LOL.

John Zelinka

Howard gets way too much undeserved flak.

Brandon

Howard isn't exactly likeable, but George is right on the money about him. He's one of those guys that's easy to dislike, but he's never exactly in the wrong either.

Logan Kerlee

I wasn't too into these episodes. I don't know, it may be me but Better Call Saul isn't doing it for me.

Carlos Hurtado

loving the BCS reactions. You guys should do some bts compilations for thumbnail picture taking. I can only imagine how silly the process can be at times.

Hunterrim

Not a show for everyone. I will say it picks up in pace after season 1, but I like to recognize that this show is very different from BB, which is why I love it so much.

PIG

I wish I was as perceptive as George in season 1. Actually, I wish most people were. Just because someone is likable doesn’t make them right.

Josh B

Really glad you're enjoying the show. It started slow for me but it's one of my favorite shows in the end. These early episodes work so much better for me on rewatch. Looking forward to next week.

Jeff K

One thing I think this show does better than Breaking Bad managed is introducing pretty fully-fleshed out characters right from the jump. Or at least, characters that aren't super one-dimensional. Like, it took a couple seasons of BB for Hank to really evolve from a bit of a loudmouth buffoon to one of the most complex and best characters in that show, as an example. Marie had a similar trajectory, which is why it takes a couple seasons to start warming up to her. Here, characters like Chuck and Kim and Nacho and Howard already have multiple layers, which is a hell of an accomplishment after only four episodes. The writing for this series is just so good. (I love Breaking Bad, but I do think Gilligan and Gould really sharpened their writing when it comes to developing characters, I'm sure in large part due to the lessons they learned while making BB; on the flipside, of course, is the fact that BB did a great job introducing the stakes, motivations, and driving plot almost immediately, whereas BCS is taking its time and establishing the characters and their relationships first.)

AJ Lynch

If you need a suggestion for a new show in the future, I've just started watching the show Snowfall and I think it's actually pretty good. It's about the start of the crack cocaine epidemic in the 80's and surrounding parties involved. I almost want to say it's similar to Breaking Bad (obviously not as good) but, still really good so far and I just finished the 1st season. Each season is 10 episodes and ran for 6 seasons at about 42-45 min. per episode.

Noel Valdez

I agree! Even the writers said he was written to be unlikeable this season, and yeah he is but I generally agree with him. Lol he's a bit of an ass but I would be if I knew Jimmy irl to be honest. haha

Jeff K

And they actually show that in the first episode, too; if you notice, the car that the two skaters follow very distinctly does NOT have that sticker. That was the clue that they were following the wrong car.

Eric Haines

George, accept your imperfectionism, be like Simone 'Spoonerism' Swan and lean into quirks ;) like Tucan Sam haha

mojo shivers

I think you’re right, Howard is supposed to be a sympathetic foil for Jimmy. He is definitely an obstacle but he’s not necessarily malicious. And I think that’s what makes it hard to pin a bad guy label on him. He’s just doing what he thinks is right when it comes to his business, not necessarily trying to come after Jimmy. If anything Howard is playing defense and Jimmy is the one attacking.

Tenn Seven

Howard just looks like that rich-daddy, douchebag stereotype and so you want to hate him, but like George was saying, he's often the most reasonable person standing in the room.

Tenn Seven

And David St. Hubbins in "This Is Spinal Tap"! And Mr. Green in "Clue"! (I don't remember if they noticed that.) I feel like they really need to watch "Best In Show" because it's hilarious and he is great in that as well.

Justin Leone

How did you two make it through a conversation about "spoonerism" without using the phrase "pobody's nerfect"?

Homestar

I can already tell this is going to be a great reaction series, can't wait for you to see everything this show has to offer!

Lanny Fisher

You’re correct about Howard not being a bad guy. I constantly wondered why Saul hated him so much.

james repka

Movie reference of the week: The Sting (1973 -- put it on your list!). The pre-credits scene here has Jimmy and his partner Marco pull off a variation of the "Pidgeon Drop" scam, conning their mark into paying Jimmy $580 bucks for a cheap fake Rolex. This is roughly the same scam that opens the Oscar-winning film. In this episode, the Mark looks at the dropped wallet and finds a fake ID for Henry Gondorff, the name of Paul Newman's character from the film. Electromagnetic sensitivity or not, does Chuck pull the aluminum blanket tighter around himself whenever he suspects that "Slippin' Jimmy" is back?

Man Goose

I do malapropisms and spoonerisms all the time. Car parks regularly become par carks, pipe smokers become pope smikers, I often don't notice I've done it unless someone points it out.

Paul G

Trademarked colors are pretty common in the automotive industry. “Rosso Corsa,” Italian for “racing red” is probably the most famous. It’s better known as Ferrari Red.

Ste Rawlings

I was concerned coming into this show that you guys were gonna really dislike Howard so I'm actually pretty relieved by George's take.

sol stapleton

Surly "Simon's peg" is a spoonism.

Mitchell Bowker

Yay! Another reaction video from BineCinge!

Noel Valdez

Rhea Seahorn is amazing in this show. With very little time you understand Kim pretty well. She's my favorite character in the show for sure. Right next to Nacho. I can't wait for this reaction series to unfold because there are a lot of amazing moments for BB fans. It's fan servicey but it's done in such a good way IMO.

Noel Valdez

My first time rewatching this and I agree! So much I didn't pick up on the first time I watched this show. I can see myself rewatching Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul over and over honestly.

Angzarr

Yup! 1:52:27 "It's crap work and it poors payly" (pays poorly)

An Inanimate Fucking Object

I really don't think there's much that Howard has done wrong. There's no question that he's presented with a vibe that is one of a rich antagonist who looks down on Jimmy as George said, BUT think about it from Howard's perspective. The first time he and Jimmy interact in the show, Jimmy storms into their conference room uninvited and unannounced while they're in the middle of a meeting and basically starts shouting and making a commotion and tears up the check Howard sent Jimmy to give Chuck. Howard stays polite, but there's no question he views Jimmy as a nuisance--but Jimmy IS kind of being a nuisance. The reason we view Howard badly and Jimmy well is because there is a definite conflict (largely coming from Jimmy), and because Jimmy is the protagonist, we side with him and not Howard. But I totally agree with George that if this was Howard's show, what we've seen so far is Jimmy being kind of an obnoxious dick. I completely see where Simone's coming from, but I do think it's interesting to look at it from the POV George brought up

Onno Smits

I really appreciate Simone for catching that her mic was picking up the rain hitting her window, and then adjusting her mic EQ on the fly to get rid of that whilst still paying attention to the interrogation scene. That's a true professional reactor right there!

Aiden

Idk if this has been said before but the guy that was hanging from the billboard is one of jimmy’s clients and you can see him in the court montage in the 2nd episode

8bitAndy

I think the reason we all dislike Howard from the start, even before we find out he tried to get Jimmy to stop using his own last name in advertising his firm, is because we all know that it's a world of haves and have nots, and we resent how things are just so much easier for the haves. That's why it's so interesting watching Jimmy try to play the game by the rules knowing it's not a level playing field, and why he's always so tempted to go to his bag of tricks to even the odds. As a lawyer, he's over matched and [surprisingly] too good a person to ever get ahead. As a conman, well, we all know what he's capable of having seen Breaking Bad.

Kenneth thomas

I know forgetting the words completely is referred to aphasia and anomic aphasia when it's due to like, actual brain damage or a disorder I think. But when you just can't remember, but theres nothing actually wrong with you, I'm not sure.

JBK405

Simone you would ROCK a suit! With Howard Hamlin, it's not WHAT he does, it's HOW he does it. You look at him and you SEE an asshole, but if you actually analyze his actions and decisions he's just a normal guy making reasonable decisions. Don't worry, you're not forgetting anything, it's all just his vibe. A great touch with Jimmy accepting the bribe money is that when he goes to his office that night, he actually calculates how much he would have earned if he was really working is his capacity as a lawyer. He inflates his prices quite a bit, but he manages to fit it into the perspective of actual legal work. He really is trying so hard to not turn into "a criminal", and though he fails, it's a tragedy instead of an adventure. Oh, and the billboard stunt IS illegal. As soon as Jimmy pointed at the student to call 911 that's making a false 911 call, when he told the responding cops what supposedly happened it would be filing a false police report, and he definitely didn't get any of the permits or permissions for a "stunt" like falling off a billboard while shooting a movie. All of these factors make the entire enterprise illegal.

Magnus Karlsson

I love that George is defending Howard. I personally love Howard. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that Howard is a saint compared to Saul. I can't believe Simone actually said that she doesn't like Howard because "I'm on Jimmy's side". That's not a good reason for disliking someone, in fact if you're above 10 years old, it's a terrible reason. The show itself might be trying to tell you something since Howard clearly speaks, walks and looks a bit like a douchebag, but the question is if that's congruent with Howard's actual behavior. Simone might think she's being loyal to the show and how it's written, but maybe that's part of the manipulation inherent in any good show.

Brad Lowry

I may not be the first to point this out, but you, Nostradamos-George, the first time we met Saul Goodman in BB said, "S'all Good Man!" Go back and watch it

Brad Lowry

Oops, forgot that there was a scene about the billboard... never mind ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

beefjerkywizard

Great reaction! I'm also enjoying this for the first time and oddly I think I'm enjoying it more than BB because it is easier to root for Jimmy than Walter. Also this is another plug for Fargo season 1 as a "short" show. The actor who plays Betsy Kettlemen is also in it (along with Jimmy)

Dan Holmes

to this day my friends make fun of me for a half-spoonerism i said before a thanksgiving meal. I said with an inquisitively high voice "Is the Cookie Turkey?" when i meant "is the Turkey Cooking" lol

Dan Holmes

Howard and all the characters in both this show and breaking bad have nebulous shifting morality, flaws and positive traits. No main character in these two shows is black and white.

Redrum Ritual

I was going to say sooner, Simone is going to love Kim. Kim and Nacho are my favorites in Better Call Saul. The scene in the first episode of Jimmy and Kim sharing the cigarette is the perfect example of show, don't tell. My nickname for the Kettlemans are Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and Betsy is Tweedle Dum. According to an actual lawyer, this show is pretty much 98% accurate with the law terms and even Jimmy rehearsing in the bathroom. Another reactor who studied law found this show fascinating also.

Jeff K

One of my favorite TV performances of all-time. It's criminal never won an Emmy.

david

Is Mike saying to Jimmy “nobody wants to leave home” (around 50:00 in the stairwell) Mike’s way of saying he knows about Chuck being homebound or just coincidence I wonder
