Redrum Ritual

Can't wait for the sequel "Sun."

Odd Thomas

Duncan Jones next film is great too: Source Code

PIG

This is the movie that made me realize how great an actor Sam Rockwell is. After that, all the way to Green Mile, I've been a fan.

Maiki

Always a bit under the radar, but it's such a great movie. There's a movie called "Mickey 17" coming up next summer, which seems to have the same premise. Directed by Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Parasite), starring Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, so that sounds promising. Very curious to see how it will differ from this one.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Always appreciated the minimalist approach and atmosphere of this movie. A big tour de force for Sam Rockwell for sure and awesome score by Clint Mansell. Sam Rockwell is also amazing in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri with Frances McDormand - highly recommended ☺️ Seems like a cool dude

Monica Alarcon

I hadn't seen this movie before... It reminded me of a novel I read recently called Mickey 7...

Odd Thomas

A good Sam Rockwell movie is Matchstick Men, directed by Ridley Scott.

Mike FromOz

I really enjoyed watching this reaction! I had seen this movie before, so knew how it would play out, but I loved seeing you both piece it all together as it went on. I also really identified with this film. I've worked on mine sites where you fly in and fly out because of how remote they are, and often the schedules are just horrible. You lose contact with people you know, lose friends, lose track of time. It's one of the reasons why a lot of people who do this kind of work go stir crazy after a while. Great to see the reaction! Looking forward to watching Gravity with you!

Josh Hobbs

I guess I'll chime in on the wildlife trivia. In the movie you see the large patches that the harvester removes from the surface. The moon scatters the sun's light because of dust and imperfection, so harvesting huge strips from the surface would significantly alter the way that light is reflected and mess with the amount of light that we get back from it during the night, which in turn would mess with many different animals in myriad ways. If you harvested enough from the light side the light would essentially bounce off in a single direction like a mirror instead of scattering any light toward earth.

BlindPanda

i would recommend the movie "Mute" by Duncan Jones its great

p0sthum4n

George mentions Arasaka and just like that I want to start a new Cyberpunk playthrough so I can check out the surprise update.

Tay Schumaker

I hadn’t seen this in a few years. The Severance score is really similar to this one

nigel Macbug

Kevin Spacey as a nice guy? recommendation:- K-Pax 2001

Piep

You guys asked why they show very old movies when someone watching TV in a Movie. I would guess its because of the Copyright law, isn´t there a 50 year limit to copyright in the US? George you should watch The Artifice Girl (2022), its about AI but on a very low Budget. The whole movie is just three (four) people in a room talking, kinda like a stage play, but its quite good and asks some real good questions. The Movie whould never win a poll here because its nearly unkown but worth a watch for fans of the topic.

djKENTO

I you want to find out what happened to all the Sams the answer is in a movie called MUTE that takes place int he same universe but is about completely different characters. It stars Paul Rudd and Alexander Skarsgard. I wouldn’t say it’s a great movie, but it will stick with you and the reaction will be good for the channel. It’s also on netflix so lots of people can watch along easily.

p0sthum4n

They're always watching old TV in movies because of licensing and usage rights. It's usually something archival that the producing studio has access to.

droodly

That has a movie version coming out sometime next year directed by Bong Joon Ho. Pretty excited for it.

Philipp Roensch

Pleasantly surprised by this movie, if short it had just the right pace to get to the important questions fast. And leaves enough room to speculate, very good. I think it used some tropes, but cleverly subverted them and not just for a joke but to make both new Sam and depreciating Sam's choices more important. Love it. I figure original Sam agreed to the program, but it is the first of its kind and secret, so probably no one outside the company knows. Interestingly, Sam's passive and pacifist behavior probably made him the prime candidate because he would not fight himself or never escalate, but the attachment memories clearly made him home sick. Wonder if 'a solution' would have been to leave him without those and just committed to the cause? Or even fine with being replaced? What is the worldwide version of "nationalized", hm is there any international project that made a space station happen or so? :D Would clones mind being clones? All interesting stuff^^. Oh and, cool clone effects, selling it really well. Now I am also excited for Mickey 17, Bong Joon-ho's new film for 2025, similar topic I can gather.

Spacedone

That shot of the clones room that stretches off into the distance wasn't CGI, it was a practical set that used forced perspective to fool the eye into thinking it was much longer than in reality. And Simone was correct, the moon surface shots were mostly done with models with some added digital effects on top. Re: the wildlife quote, I think they're trying to say that the process of mining the surface would change how much light was reflected towards Earth due to different rocks having different albedos and changes in light might have effects on nocturnal Earth wildlife. I've spoken with Duncan Jones a few times on social media. He's very friendly and funny and 100% a genre fiction nerd :D He's currently working on adapting the 2000AD (aka creators of Judge Dredd) character Rogue Trooper to the screen as an animated movie.

Spacedone

There are several videos on Youtube where people involved explain how they did all the effects, including Sam Rockwell interacting with himself.

Grumblefunk

I remember liking Mute but had no idea it was meant to be in Moon's universe, that's interesting

Opti_Frog

Source Code is also pretty great. After seeing that and Moon, i was completely on board with Jones directing the Warcraft movie. Regarding why Duncan Jones got the Warcraft gig: he was the only director who presented Legendary/Blizzard with another vision than humans=heroes, orcs=villains, because he was a Horde player and understood that players/viewers from both factions would be seeing the film. Sadly, i think he was pretty much steam-rolled by the studio both while making and editing the movie.

Steve Mercier

Loooooooooooooooooooove this movie...even if the robot is voiced by a bad man. Love this movie--so simple, but so good.

Jesus F Christ

I really love the score for Moon. I always find myself humming/whistling it for a few days after watching it. Because I watched this movie for the first time before I read The Martian, Mark Watney in my head was Sam Rockwell. I love The Martian film adaptation, but it took me until the second watch to get used to Matt Damon as Watney.

Jacob King

When it’s a 90s movie like Mrs Doubtfire there’s an extra element that 90s tv was full of old movies and syndicated shows for the same reason. It’s cheap programming. I say this as a 90s kid who watched Gilligans Island, Bewitched, the Munsters and the Brady Bunch etc

p0sthum4n

Well, in the specific case of Mrs. Doubtfire, they were watching an episode of Outer Limits called "The Hundred Days of the Dragon" about changing someone's appearance in order to insert them into the US presidency as a mole. Just a little easter egg for the plot.

Tyler Foster

Would really love to see them do more Bong on the channel -- in particular, Parasite and Memories of Murder. I'd also be thrilled to see Park Chan-Wook's The Handmaiden and/or Decision to Leave.

Tyler Foster

Disney expanded the law, I believe to 100 years, and then they seem to have developed further, more granular ideas of copyright, so that, for example, Steamboat Willie Mickey is public domain but Mickey in general is not.

joejud1017

Sam Rockwell is so underrated. One of my favorite actors. If you get a chance check out these coming of age movies he's in, "Lawn Dogs" and "The Way Way Back".

howtocookazombie (Stan)

Hmm. I don't know. I think that the original Sam is intelligent enough to understand that he wouldn't like it to be cloned and then his clones to be used as slaves. Especially because of his rather friendly and passive personality. I mean, basically everyone can reflect so much to understand that he might have been one of the clones himself. I could imagine that the original Sam either gave a blood sample for some (to him) unknown project without knowing that it would be used to create clones or he didn't even knew about anything at all. After all, the only thing you need to clone a human being is DNA. You can get that from a blood drop, a hair, saliva, and so on. Basically anyone could be cloned without his or her knowledge. Especially if the company behind this project is so evil but also so big, that they supply 70% of the entire world and are obviously perfectly willing to kill the clones (we saw them coming to moon with huge guns), it would be an unnecessary threat for the company to keep the original Sam alive. They would have eliminated him to not to take any risks. After all, they don't really need the original Sam anymore, since they already have his DNA.

howtocookazombie (Stan)

I'm glad that they didn't made GERTY an evil AI, like it is being portrayed in many movies. I agree with George that GERTY's primary directive was to help Sam as long as this directive wouldn't conflict with higher directives. The problem is that Sam simply didn't knew about anything, so he never asked GERTY to do something unusual and GERTY had therefore no reason to deny him anything ever.

Philipp Roensch

Well that is at least an interesting possibility, we're not getting from the movie alone, but I like that as well.

Sergio Meira

An unexpectedly deceptive movie, isn't it? You think you're going for a tale of space sci-fi, perhaps some aliens, or some exploration... and it turns out to be about biology and cloning.

Den Radar Ryan

Great movie and it was directed by Duncan Jones who is actually the late, great, David Bowie's only son. He also directed the movie "Source Code" (2011) and that "Warcraft" movie in 2016. Wish he would direct more films.

David S

I could be wrong, but I think the woman he saw at the beginning was his daughter. I'm so glad you finally saw this one, one of my favorite movies (despite the fact that they showed the earth in the sky, so it couldn't have been the far side of the moon, otherwise the earth would be below the horizon... it was more like the side side)

Sergio Meira

This movie always reminds me of Ursula LeGuin's famous short story 'Those who Walk Away from Omelas'. Yeah, paradise on earth, baby! But we have to sacrifice someone... can we accept that? (If you haven't read the Omelas story, you should. It's short, like 8 pages, it's great food for thought, and it's all over the internet.)

Ed R

Interesting that he was inspired by the movie Outland. That's a great movie btw. You guys would like it.

CT

Clint Mansell did the great score for this one. For more of his work, I recommend The Fountain (2006).

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Huge Sam Rockwell fan, effortlessly charming and funny in everything, always a great addition to any cast and this is one of my favorite movies of his, the more Sams the better. A couple other great Sam Rockwell films are Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Matchstick Men (with Nick Cage and which I just found out is a Ridley Scott movie), of course George knows he's also in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and we're all patiently waiting for that reaction too lol. Moon also reminds me of, and I've probably recommended it before, Robot and Frank. The premise is not quite as compelling as his one, it's just similar in that it's an interesting Sci Fi film with a heart, not as dark as this one I'd say, I just really liked it, but I tend to really like clever, quirky little Sci Fi one offs.

Jacob King

Yeah, similar to the other clones hallucination of him trapped I think he’s tapping into a Sam Bell collective consciousness.

Jacob King

A strong reference point for this movie is Solaris which you guys should definitely check out. A lot of birds, animals and insects use the moon for navigation so that could be what the “environment” issue would be. If we look at the ambient harm Starlink is doing to the night sky it’s actually optimistic to assume that a private company would care that much. Source Code is good. I’d compare Warcraft to the terrible Justin Kurzel Assassin’s Creed movie and a bunch of the lesser Marvel films. There was a real trend of hiring cool indie directors to work on billion dollar IP and then not letting them make anything that resembled the work that got them hired in the first place. Ant-Man Thor 2, and Solo are the big examples because the directors got fired but the mid 2010s was rough.

E. D.

Please keep watching black mirror episodes, there are no bad ones, just less good ones.

Jpsynergy

Glad you watched this gem. There was a big campaign to get Sam Rockwell an oscar from fans when it came out. Just an incredible performance.

ScottishSammo

Sam Rockwell is a great actor, loved this reaction. Hopefully you get round to Hitchhikers guide but another great Sam Rockwell movie is 'seven psychopaths' with Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken and Woody Harrelson

REDR58

George as the capsule was returning Sam to earth you can hear one of the news broadcasts talking about the hit the company’s shares took after the story got out about the clones. You mentioned “Silent Running” during the trivia. It is a classic sci-fi movie from 1972 directed by Douglas Trumbull and starring Bruce Dern. Check it out.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Seven Psychopaths is great. Tom Waits too I think. That also made me think of (bit of a non-sequitur) 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag with Joe Pesci.

ScottishSammo

YES! 8 heads is great, it's been years since I last watched it though. Would be good in a future poll 😁

dys

Another fan of The Fountain! There are dozens of us... dozens!

Aaron Crawford

Would love a Seven Psychopaths reaction, Rockwell, Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken all having a blast.

Emily G

Please please add Ever After (1998) Drew Barrymore is amazing in it, and The Producers (2005 version) to your watchlist! I really think you guys would enjoy it. ❤️

JDV

George i don't wanna be annoying but please invest in a silent mouse if you're gonna click throughout every video.

SpankTheMonk

Benedict Wong appears once again!

Mitch M

Yes...that movie blew my mind the first time I saw it, although it took me several viewings to really fully understand the themes. Brilliant film, and the music is epic.

Austin P

The girl he hallucinated at 12:20 is the grown up Eve, played by Kaya Scodelario
