Big Gee

Here we go

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Well… all’s I can say is I hope you both have a fulfilling viewing experience together going into this season. To stop saying anything else of what’s ahead I’ll zip these err… typing fingers 🤔

Big Gee

lol very fulfilling

Michael

Again, on our own...

Marko T.

I have liked this season so far. As a fan I don't like some of the changes.

Mastervodo

They Red Weddinged Us!

cincassette

I'm looking forward to jump into this! It will be a first time watch for me too. I played both of the TLOU games. The first is still one of my all time favourites, that I have played over and over again. I have yet to replay the second game, and I won't say too much about it here, but I'm certainly very intrigued on how it will translate to the format.

Mikebdrx

Going down the only road we ever known?

Jacob

Most people get so caught up with whether Joel or the Fireflies were right about the end of season 1. You feel you need to pick a side and that absolves all actions taken because your on the right side. But no one talks about what Ellie would have chosen. She would have absolutely sacrificed herself I think. The Fireflies were wrong to not give her the choice, but even if they did I think Joel still would have done what he did. And let me be clear, I would have done what Joel did, but I'm a parent and fully realize it's a selfish act.

Jay Willis

Regarding Kaitlyn Dever looking like game Ellie. She was actually attached to a film version that was originally proposed. But then they felt by the time they got to the point to proceed with a series, she had aged out of the role. Ironically she'd be a much better fit for Game 2 Ellie, age wise. That was always the issue IMO with the adaptation. You needed an actress who could play 14 in season 1 and then a 19 year old Ellie if you get to season 2. But Ellie in the game doesn't look 19, she looks 27, lol. So it was always going to be tough to cast for the show.

Matt88g

Abbey and Elle are both the main characters of the game, you go back and forth between them

Jay Willis

I think people really struggle with putting themselves in the Fireflies' shoes (besides Abby). I think we all get Abby's motivations for the most part. But George and Simone weren't understanding why the others are out for revenge as well (or at least not as much), forgetting that their lives were also upended. Maybe they didn't have family in Salt Lake (maybe they did), but they definitely had friends and those they cared for, their mission, their way of life. All of it was destroyed when Joel did what he did. They also presumably assume he chose to murder them all to save one person when they were trying to save the world (whether it was far fetched or not). For me it's easy to understand why they tracked him down and killed him. Regarding Joel's decision. All parties were wrong in that moment. The Fireflies were wrong to not given Ellie the choice, she would've probably chosen to let them do it. But they wanted to save her pain and fear, and while noble, was the wrong decision to take that choice away from her. But Joel ALSO took that choice away from her. And Joel DID NOT have to kill the doctor. He could've shot him in the leg and been as effective, and then maybe one day Ellie does have that choice again. But instead he killed him. Joel was selfish, and sure we can all sympathize with it and many of us would've probably done the same thing if we could. That doesn't make it ok or wave away the other parties' justifications for what they view as justice and/or revenge.

MoonageDaydream

A sensible viewpoint in the last of us fandom? Maybe there’s still hope!

cincassette

This might be the first time the TV show has more zombies than the games.

Vengeance

My issue with the death of Joel is not that they killed him. I never played the game and even I understand the logic behind it. But the final scene of season 1 is Joel lying to Ellie about what he did. This was also the first scene of season 2. Then we get a time jump and no closure on that storyline at all. Kinda ruins the end of season 1 to me, because I felt we’d explore that lie in season 2. And even if Ellie learns the truth, she can now never confront Joel about it. Just sloppy forced writing in my opinion. And no, Ellie being a moody teenager is not her and Joel having it out over him killing Marlene and the Fireflies.

Garrett Mazzuca

I think Jackson Hole was going to be attacked whether Abby was there or not. The townsfolk interacting with the cordyceps sealed the deal.

Cinebinge

but did Abby waking up a second horde add to the destruction? cause there was that slightly confusing shot of the 2 waves merging. in which case, had she not woken up another horde, perhaps the town would fair a lot better?

Cinebinge

agreed! it really felt like they set up that conflict only to not explore it

Garrett Mazzuca

Perhaps. It's hard to say how many are connected and how far their reach is.

StrayConfusion

The second game is significantly longer than the first (30-40hrs vs 8-16hrs), so they're splitting the second game into two seasons. The show is telling the story in a slightly different order (most Jackson scenes are told through flashback at later points in the game) and adding a few things here and there (Joel's therapist Gale is new for the show, the infected assault on Jackson is referenced as something that happened in the past but never shown), but everything they've added has been great so far. And yes, the golf tournament was just as traumatic in the game.

Cinebinge

i can definitely understand and even sympathize the desire for revenge, less so for torture. i would also consider that if in the pursuit of revenge for 5 years, i suddenly discover that humanity is slowly rebuilding and that the person i wanted to place my vengeance on had saved my life moments earlier, i may hesitate more. but then thats just me sitting comfortably in a room.

Cinebinge

absolutely possibility yeah. though i still think the fireflies plan in itself is terrible. theres 1 single being in the whole world that is immune, going straight for brain harvesting, entirely based on an untested theory, seems really rash and just bad planning? like at the very least draw some blood, create multiple blood cultures and test like hell before killing your own source no? to me it just seems like had joel not stopped them, they wouldve killed Ellie for nothing.

Ashton Lewis

Sure the second horde meant more infected attacking Jackson, but I don't think Abby can really be blamed. She didn't wake them up on purpose, she just fell down a hill and landed on them, then ran for her life. If she hadn't been there then they probably wouldn't have woken up (although in the show they are all sort of connected so maybe the other horde would have woke them anyway), but I do think wanting her to die just for accidentally stumbling on some ninja infected is maybe a tad strong haha. I think you should play through the games when you're done with this. Pretty sure they've just been remastered again too

Vengeance

Better off to just leave out that line of dialogue.

Vengeance

Well the horde Abby woke up turned and went to Jackson, so they were connected. They just woke up earlier. But then you can argue, why didn’t the 2nd group also go after Abby and cut them off during the escape

D. T. Nelson

It wasn't fireflies or Abbie who caused the infected attack on Jackson. It was the cordyceps in the pipes that alerted the infected. Yes, George. The first game is primarily Joel's story. The second game is Ellie's (and Abbie's) story. Everyone says they loath Abbie, but that is only because the story so far has focused on Joel and Ellie. But Abbie is exactly like Joel (how many people have you seen Joel stab in the nec?). Ellie us just as brutal. It's painful now, but the second game's story is Shakespearean in its brilliance. If the show runners can keep the series as faithful to the game as they have so far, you are in for a treat. It's so much more than just a revenge story. Also, there is no way they can cover that story in one season—or probably even two seasons—and still do it justice. No padding will be needed. I don't think they could do this story in less than 24 hour-long episodes. Also, don't believe for a second that you won't see Joel again. He may no longer be a primary character in the story, but he's an important one. Remember there was a five year time jump between season 1 and 2. It was a significant five years.

Shelby Grego

The whole theme of the second story is as I see it, anger grief and revenge is a non ending cycle. Ellie has become Abby now. I will say this the game tries to have people empathize with Abby, this is where people got pissed with the game. There is a couple scenes they may revist with Joel. There was a scene on the porch with them both, where they did patch things up.

Helly R

I would just say that season 1 is a complete story that for me stands by itself. Seasons 2 and 3 of this show are basically a sequel that does something different, and the second game is unconventional in a number of ways. So stick with it and see if you still feel the same by the end. You might (there are plenty of people who don't like it) but you also might not. I don't think it's sloppy - it's by design. I would however agree that it's pretty tough to swallow at this point in the show. In pure TV show terms getting rid of the core relationship of the show that was really kind of magical in season 1 is fairly idiotic. I wish we got at least another season of Bella and Pedro together.

Jeffrey Conway

There are no correct sides to any arguments in this show. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong. The cycle of vengeance is never ending.

Helly R

Maybe don't spoil things for them.

Levi Curry

Abby did not awaken the second horde. They were woken by the pipe being disturbed. And so it stands to reason the first horde been awoken the same way if Abby hadn't disturbed them. Jackson would have been attacked by both hordes whether Abby was there or not.

robodong

i think the scene was kind of confusing. i mean it literally showed Abby fall into an area full of bodies, then they wake up... so yeah.

cincassette

Maybe I have a broader definition of what is considered a spoiler than others, but I think some of these comments are seriously verging on spoiler territory. I think Simone and George's experience of this show would be better with less explanation about how the game works, or the messages, meanings or questions that the story poses as a whole, at least from people who have watched ahead or have played the games.

Levi Curry

Abby doesn't care why Joel murdered her father. She doen't care that he was trying to save Ellie's life. The only thing she cares about is that he killed her dad. Just like in Captain America: Civil War, Tony doesn't care that Bucky was brainwashed and mind controlled. "He killed my mom." That's all that matters to him. Is it unfair? Maybe. Is it understandable? Absolutely.

Urbanform

It was Marlene who took the 'choice' away from Ellie and not Joel. She already had Ellie on the slab unconscious to be operated upon while Joel asked her, begged her even to let him see her, to which Marlene refused and everything happened after that was the consequence of her decision. She did not just take away her choice to decide her fate, but also denied the opportunity for her to say goodbye to Joel which Ellie would have wanted more than anything. The ironic part is she wants to save humanity and couldn't even show a little bit of it to let Joel and Ellie have their last moment. If Ellie really wanted to sacrifice herself then she would have convinced Joel to accept her decision and he would have been left with no choice but to accept it. Also the doctor, Abby's father was a piece of sh*t for wanting to operate on a child without her knowledge and consent no matter the 'noble' cause. He literally treated Ellie as a piece of meat just like his daughter did with Joel. Joel did the logical thing there was. And frankly Marlene and her whole gang of morons were incompetent to do anything. let alone make a cure and 'save' the world. If 18 of them couldnt handle a 56 year old half deaf with bad knees then they were in the wrong buisness. And the whole 'cure' aspect also comes across futile after 20 years of infection and given the state of the world. Putting the logistics aside of mass producing it, it only makes a person immune to the infection but the you still have to deal with the infected. And not to mention the majority of the population is dead or infected and the ones that have survived are mostly hardened criminals, so whom are the Firflies saving?

TechJJ

There will be details to come since the show follow faithful to the flow of the game and all relevant scenes. There was more reveal in the first game as when Joel work his way up the upper floor Pediatric surgery, the player as Joel would find a recording from the doctor/surgeon, recordings from Marlene, x-rays, and graphical illustrations from various test results, formulas, etc.

TechJJ

There was a poll that creator did. Parents overwhelmingly support Joel while the non-parents are split. I would've elaborate that poll if I am to conduct one. If it's my child that is to be sacrificed (selfish love) and my near-adult child is not giving a chance to decide, I would do what Joel did. But if the child is an orphan or not mine kid, I would think more for my kid living in a better world...

DonkyDave

Did Simone have some special time before this video? She seems super extra happy ;)

Rev

Not sure if it has been suggested or not, but if it hasn't been, you should add "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" to your list of movies to watch.

Ray H

Kaitlyn Devers & Pedro went clubbing! Enjoy the ride, it’s a helluva emotional story, personally my favorite that I’ve had the chance to play.

Alphonse Shehata

You didn't play the game! There's a lot more in the game.

Vengeance

The Red Wedding at least made since. You could see why it happened. There were so many subtle notes built into the character storylines beforehand, that when it happened it shocked you, because maybe you didn’t pick up on everything, but you could at least watch it back and say it makes sense. And the Freys/Lannisters earned the right to kill Robb and his men. Here, we get 2 brief background clips of Abby dealing with the aftermath, a 5 year time jump, and then Joel and Abby just stumble right into each other. No build up, they just used convenient storytelling to rush what should’ve been a huge moment. Not the show’s fault, they followed the games formula, but that doesn’t mean the game didn’t do it wrong. And maybe this is a unfair comparison, but I’ve seen numerous other shows kill off major characters (we’re talking about GOT here, but TWD and BB and many other shows killed main characters), and the good ones did it the right way.

Alphonse Shehata

Yes, the scene of Joel dying is brutal, but it was actually more brutal in the game. Imagine having to play as Abby right after she kills Joel, not knowing why she killed him it sucked playing the game and you having to play as Abby right after she kills Joel not knowing why she killed him its messed up. A lot of people stop playing the game I imagine a lot of people are gonna stop watching the show.

Vengeance

Yes, but if the pipe cordyceps was connected to both groups to wake the second and turn the first off chasing Joel/Abby/Dina, why wasn’t the second alerted to Abby when the first woke up? The fungus didn’t want to have two groups chase her? Only waited to wake the 2nd group up when Jackson disturbed the pipe?

Shonnicus

Glad you two are reacting to this. Since it's fresh ongoing I might just catch the YouTube for now I had a Luke Warm take about the timeline of the show if you would have watched the show when it premiered. I'm over it. Show is good, no big complaints.

Vengeance

If game 2 is going to be both seasons 2 and 3, then they could have spent more time in Jackson before Joel died to have the impact mean more. Show some more interactions with Joel/Ellie. Show more of Abby’s background and show her working to find Joel instead of having him fall into her lap. All I’ve heard on Reddit, etc is the show is rushing stuff and skipping things, so use season 2 to make the death feel earned. If we have to wait until season 3 to get more of Abby’s mindset and background, then that’s just bad planning and it won’t resonate with show only viewers because it’ll be too late.

TechJJ

"I hate Abby so much." This is exactly how the story expects the audience to feel at this point and ready to go on a revenge tour. Please be patient and stick with the story until the end (S3 unfortunately). The story is a masterpiece in itself. Many believe more so than the first, but I just think they are different. Unlike the first game/season where very episode can be gripping, this story / flow do bring different type of emotions and may not be gripping from episode to episode. It's after the ending, and even days after, before many will finally see it as a masterpiece. Hang in there.

Fraser

If all of what you said was true, why wouldn’t Joel just tell Ellie what happened? If Joel was only doing the “logical” thing as you put it then surely Ellie would be on board with that?

Fraser

You could do this to no end, if Joel hadn’t killed Abby’s dad then she wouldn’t have been there to start with

Jeff I.

Yeah, a couple of these comments are kind of spoilery as far as hinting at character development and overall plot aspects that a non-game viewer shouldn't really know at this point.

Farbod

The second game is twice as long as the first game. They are splitting the second game into multiple seasons.

Urbanform

That is where I feel Joel went wrong and frankly didnt make sense. He could have explained her the whole situation and what went down and she would have been angry maybe, but she would have understood eventually. And he could have also promised her to help her find the 'cure' if she still wanted to since she is still alive and now make that choice with the complete knowledge. Ellie didnt know she was going to die for the 'cure', she was never informed about that part of the bargain. Maybe she would have chosen to go along maybe not, but like I said Marlene didnt give her that choice. And Marlene groomed and manipulated Ellie from the beginning about her 'higer' purpose without mentioning the fact that she will die. Ellie was 14 years old who was born and brought up in a closed of shelter with no real idea about life and life altering desicions, so to put her in that position and not giving her the complete information was not just cruel but also disgusting. The writers wanted the story to continue and to be dramatic so thats why they made Joel lie or else the story would have ended there . And whatever I said in my first post is part of the story and not hypothtical.

redhawk

They are going to explore Joel’s lie with flashbacks in episode 6. It’s shown at the end of the season 2 trailer with Ellie telling Joel “you swore” and it’s done the saw way in the game via flashbacks.

redhawk

I hate the argument that since the Fireflies didn’t draw Ellie’s blood before doing surgery, and we don’t know how would they distribute the vaccine if they were to develop one, Joel was right. This is a show about humans infected by cordyceps, it’s not trying to be 100% medically accurate. By saying the Fireflies didn’t follow real-world science with Ellie, and therefore are wrong and would have failed, it makes Joel’s decision an uninteresting non-debate.

Neburcs

This is fiction right so the writers want to send a message with the ending of season 1 and what Joel did. For me it's like the trolley problem, it's not logical and wouldn't work in a real life scenario (they wouldn't immeditely kill of their one immune person, being a doctor doesn't mean you know how to develop vaccines, how can the fireflies spread the vaccine). So applying real life logic to a fictional world sort of takes away the core point the writers wants to make with this story. Joel would damn the entire world to save Ellie, that's the point of season 1. I always assume that the cure would have worked because the impact is bigger.

Snuggelbum

DEI slop. So sad they went down this road in season 2

Vengeance

Thanks for the spoilers.

redhawk

Right because there weren’t 4 gay characters in season 1. Also, it’s following the game with its “DEI” characters.

Fox

The time is wrong onthis..it kept getting our of sync

Ciarra Jade

I’ve seen a few memes before the season started with Joel and Abby going golfing and Joel hands Abby a golf club 😬😂

Ray H

Ouch 🤣

Aragorn_Elessarx

@cinebinge The cure isn't in her blood though. It's in her brain. Marlene told Joel that the Cordyceps in Ellie had mutated. That's what they need samples of in order to make the cure. The only way to get those samples is harvesting from the fungal growth in her brain, which would kill her.

Jonas

This sort of naked blanket declaration of bigotry is why Patreon maybe needs a downvote button. We need ways to express that your failure to accept your fellow human beings is not accepted by us. I can't convince you to be a better person, but I can make it clear that the only thing we won't tolerate is your intolerance.

Helly R

That's how the game is structured. It's fine the criticize it, but the show is not rushing. Joel's death happens very early (like hour 2 of a 25-30 hour game) and is the inciting incident.

Helly R

Take your hate elsewhere plz.

fromage

Man, conservative bigots love to show that they have zero media literacy at all. Like, you watched season 1 and decided now you wanna complain about this? How do you even have enough brain power to wipe the slobber and spit from your chin every day, genius?

fromage

I won't spoil anything for you, but that's part of the challenge of the game. It challenges you to empathize and go along with the characters' motivations without fully understanding how things play out in the timeline. It jumps back and forth in time A LOT and reveals more things as it goes along. That's all I'll say.

fromage

Agreed. "Why didn't these characters behave in a logical way and use the expected practices"....in a world where infected, raiders, limited technology, limited resources strip away most available options and time to proceed.

RLYtoxic

Seems like the hate on both sides, equals out in the end.

BellaBlue

Breaking thru the pipe is what brought them to the town, not Abby...plenty of other stuff if you want to be mad at Abby, but not that

Jonas

RLYToxic, it only seems that way because you don't understand. Having disdain for the presence of a character in a story because of their sexuality or ethnicity is prejudice and bigotry. Having disdain for someone because of their bigotry is judging them on the contents of their character. The "hate on both sides" is not equivalent. Calling it "DEI slop" is clearly expressing the disapproval that the wrong kind of people are in the story. The disapproval they receive in turn is completely justified judgement of their unjust attitudes.

BellaBlue

call the plumber

Jared Winn

I'm not emotionally ready to rewatch yet, so I'll see you after the finale.

RLYtoxic

I understand fine, no need to belittle people. If I see a comment that hurts my feelings (very rare), I can block it. If you need to match energy, you reply pound for pound. People see a hateful comment and choose the dark side. Makes for fun reading, otherwise I would just blocked it and never gave it the light of day.

fromage

RLYToxic, I'm sorry, but no. You put more effort into denouncing comments of those responding in-kind to the hateful people who are offended at the mere sight of minority groups in media. I don't see you rising to the occasion when it's those minority groups who are receiving bile. However, when it's the bigots that catch some harsh responses to their hatred, it's always "OH NO, don't belittle people! Please think of the bigot's feelings". We don't live in a world where it's the bigots who are losing rights, where the admininsitration in charge aren't ACTIVELY trying to harm people who were already in a precarious situation. NO. Blocking and hiding hatred is just pretending it doesn't exist. It's what lead us to where we are today.

Paul Peavler

It’s also just not factual. We know from the games, at least, that they absolutely ran tests and brain scans on Ellie.

dys

Sometimes these comments get too bogged down in pointless nasty arguments from many sides (which is already crazy to me, because these are comments on a channel whose hosts always just seem like decent people, so I can't understand why there is so much toxicity here)... but other times there is just the one obvious asshole as in this case.

Marko T.

I think the second game is even better than the first one.

Dragonhunter

You didn't play her for like ten hours after she did that though.

dys

I wonder if it will make Simone feel any more conflicted, knowing that she loves Ashley Johnson, that Laura Bailey, an actor she also loves, plays Abby in the game.

djKENTO

Season 2 and 3 will be the 2nd game split into two parts. That’s what we know so far. Also if you want more Pedro… MANDO! You still basically have a season and a half if you include Book of Boba Fett… and a movie coming out next year MANDO AND GROGU THE MOVIE. also Gladiator II…

TheOne 07

So Season 2 is only a third of the second game. The second game is about 40-60% longer than the first game. This season they need more time to tell the story because the structure from the second game is much more complex. One season for the entire second game would probably have to be 20+ episodes and HBO isn't famous for doing that.

redhawk

Season 2 is half of the second game. They could extend the second half of the game with a fourth season, but where it will end by the end of season 2 is half of the game.

RLYtoxic

JDV Say what you will, but you just lower yourself to that standard. Good luck trying to play in the mud, without getting dirty lol.

Nathan Jasper

Honestly, someone killed my dad, I'd want to punish the SOB that took him too. Abby may have taken it too far in the moment but she's completely justified.

Matthew Blackwood

I’m really sad for you that you’re watching the show instead of playing the game. This has become a really terrible adaptation this season, and that’s a huge bummer because Part II is a masterpiece. One of I think just 3 games I’d use that term for.

DinChild

2nd is my favorite game. I'm happy to have a different experience, personally. Only 4 episodes in...I'm sure they have a plan for the way this narrative is rolling out.

DinChild

Abby didn't cause the infected to run at Jackson. That was the pipe. Would have happened either way. Also, the game doesn't give Abby the monologue. It was a fun alternative universe for fans. And yeah...you'll get all the answers you're looking for!

Buhr

If they make the part of Part II I think they will into a stand alone episode he will be back. There is a spot in the game with a brief interlude of calmness that involves a flashback chapter.

El_Zilcho22

The 2nd game is pretty long so yeah they are splitting it into 2 seasons. So I don't think they will milk it. If anything hopefully they are able to wrap it up nicely in 2 seasons.

Alejandro Perez Castro

She did expedite the process by getting them out of hibernation but yeah, once they’d inevitably crack more of the pipe, the infected would’ve been alerted.
