John

Looks like it

dasgrove

I think I went too fast around the sun and was sent back to last week.

Mark Huber

There must have been a transporter accident.

Xpndable

I know right?😅

Cody Cameron

Thanks for the fix for those reading the comments the episode title was wrong but is now correct

dudewheresmycar

George. In the intro you mention that you'll be watching 3 episodes a week rather than 2 which I don't disagree with. But even at a rate of 3 a week that's 59 weeks of TNG. Im just thinking that as the show has a few two parter episodes (10 double episodes, 20 episodes total including Encounter at Farpoint) maybe you could treat them as a single episode when you come across them? Cram 4 episodes into a Wednesday release instead so you're not accidentally splitting them up between weeks when you run into them?

PG Modehouse

Code of Honor, yikes. Production-wise this was the second episode they shot. There's just too much stuff that doesn't make sense in it, weird racial stuff notwithstanding. Will Wheaton mentioned that this episode was almost emblematic of the first season slop that almost got the show cancelled.

PeppermintWizardOfAus

Or waiting the week would make the cliffhanger that much better, get the true wait a week experience

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Hahah the cue for saying “Space” in the intro tends to be when Saturn JUST hits left of centre screen before drifting upward…. Anyways, in terms of acting prowess for the acting discussion George I would say Brent Spiner shines as a truly excellent actor - especially as this show goes on. Outside of Star Trek his work on “Night Court” as Bob Wheeler for example is comedy genius, and it’s the role he gave up in order to become Data on this show back in ‘87

Cinebinge

hi there. just to be very clear, the 3 episode decision is based on availability not a guarantee. there will be some weeks where we will do 2 as we normally do if there is not enough time. to increase it further is not possible at this time as our schedule is already as packed as can be. however, perhaps i am not understanding something here, but why is it important to rush through TNG in as little weeks as possible?

Matrim

Code of Honor is one of those episodes that gets worse the more you think about it. It’s pretty heinous. Almost everyone involved is embarrassed by it.

Lintrinsic

Code of Honour is one of the most contentious episodes in TNG. The moral ambiguity of Yar getting abducted and kinda digging it. The questionable choice of letting a random kid work on the bridge during a crisis. Waiting a day before doing anything when you have a woman abducted from your crew with no idea what's happening to her because it would be considered impolite. Arguments have raged back and forth over whether the episode is racist since it aired, but seeing as the director was fired by Roddenberry midway through the episode because he felt he was racist, that clinches it for me. The Ligonian's were intended to be lizardlike, and the director decided to go with Black people instead. There were concerns about racial coding used to imply savagery and barbarism they weren't able to do much about as it was too late. The trope of Black men coveting & snatching a white blonde woman didn't help either. The cast hated this episode and still talk about being ashamed of it. Jonathan Frakes even campaigned to get it removed from re-runs. The writer went on to sell almost the exact same story to another big sci-fi show I won't name to avoid spoilers, it appeared early in it's run and is also considered a contentious episode of that show too. So maybe a case for "the writers barely disguised fetish" meme.

TalynOne

Code of Honor is one of the most hated episodes of the series. Even the cast despises it. Jonathan Frakes referred to the episode as a "racist piece of shit." At a 2007 science fiction convention in Toronto, Canada, he told the audience. Brent Spiner regarded this episode as the "worst episode we ever did" and "an inadvertently racist episode." Bit of trivia: The most widely hated episode of Stargate SG-1, Emancipation, which was also the fourth episode of the first season of that show followed very similar themes. Both TNG's Code of Honor and SG-1's Emancipation were written by the same person, Katharyn Powers.

dudewheresmycar

It's not a desire to rush through content, but more a recognition that there's a lot of TNG and I love TNG so it's not a complaint. 172 further episodes though so that's somewhere between 57 and 86 weeks of show depending on your 2-3 episode cadence. Maybe you could go the opposite direction and break up the show with something in between other than the trek movies your also doing?

Cinebinge

i understand the concern, but for now we don't make plans or promises for anything that far down the road. if at any point we start to feel TNG fatigue, we will say so and make plans accordingly. for now we are just happy trekking along at a pace that is reasonable and manageable to our current schedule. our plans and scheduling will always be based on what is sustainable and enjoyable currently. rather than basing it on tidiness or a future schedule months or years down the road.

robodong

"to prevent burn out on a show you should watch more of it and adhere to a rigid rule!" is a strange kind of logic.

Nick Scholz

While Armin Shimerman does play Quark later in DS9, the Ferengi he plays is not Quark.

Lintrinsic

The Last Outpost was meant to be the introduction of TNG's big bad, the Ferengi, they were supposed to be taken seriously, but obviously nobody did. And yes, that's Armin Shimmerman in his first Trek appearance. As an aside, back during TNG's run I was invited to go and roam around London dressed in Starfleet uniform by a guy I'd just met, before it was called cosplay. When I said I didn't have a costume to wear he suggested "female Ferengi". He was shocked at my blunt response and seemed to think I wouldn't get the reference. Needless to say I didn't go, and didn't call him back.

MrCAL

Several episodes of season 1 and 2 is made up of unused TOS scripts. As you can imagine this coupled with Gene Roddwnberry's let say, dogmatic approach to the writers room had a negative effect on the show. When he stopped being part of the show (due to poor health) TNG began to breath and grow in both quality and scope.

Alan Pownall

It isn't Quark, it's Principal Snyder in cosplay.

Cody Cameron

Different Character. Same Species though

Lintrinsic

They eventually settle into Stardates having some sort of standard, 4 as it's the 24th century, the next number is the season, the rest is some indication of how far through the year it is. But I don't think they always got it right and sometimes it goes backwards instead of forwards. Some fans make a science of analysing it but beyond the first two digits I get a headache.

Opti_Frog

As far as i remember, the creators wanted a "big bad" for the show that would sort of replace the Klingons from TOS, and the Ferengi were supposed to be that. Clearly, as this episode proves, that did not go as planned. I don't know who is to blame for the Ferengi being so goofy in The Last Outpost, but rest assured - they find interesting things to do with the Ferengi over time.

GAB

Wesley was Gene Roddenberry's middle name. Wesley Crusher was way too adjacent to a Gary Stu (male version of a Mary Sue) for my taste. Roddenberry also saw himself as Kirk and Riker. It was his main flaw as an auteur.

Lintrinsic

I always forget about Biff Yeager who plays Argyle. As you may have noticed, there isn't a permanent chief engineer so far. Apparently there was a letter campaign for it to be Argyle, and it's claimed they considered it until they realised the letters mentioned an episode that hadn't aired yet, and fans started complaining they were getting mail asking them to write in asking for Argyle. Turned out Yeager was behind it all and his plan was thwarted.

Dan

I'd like to take this opportunity to propose reacting to Project Hail Mary (also sci-fi, same author and script-writer as The Martian) after it releases next year. The trailer just dropped but I'd also recommend avoiding it unless you need it to convince you or you've already read the book. (It's ok but I think the film will likely be better if watched blind to a couple of things.)

Spacedone

Agreed. If people don't already know about the story then avoid the trailer because it blows what might otherwise be an unexpected thing.

dudewheresmycar

If you do hit burn out, might I suggest a poll of some of the most highly rated short shows and mini series ever made? Shows like Fleabag, Generation Kill, The Queens Gambit, Masters of the Air, Roots, or The Pacific?? Just something short and sweet to break things up but not by too much. However once you hit season 3 of TNG I don't suppose you will hit burn out as that's where the shows really takes of in terms of quality.

Cinebinge

the Wednesday slot began as something extra as we had a little bit of extra time, and we wanted it to be something we chose for ourselves. if we were to ever take a break, we will likely just pick something else we personally are interested in rather than yet another poll. but again, we don't plan for anything that far in advance and we have no intention to rush through a show as fast as possible or to base it on any scheduling rules aside from just sustainable and enjoyable. So again, we are not planning or promising anything base on something that far into the future and is a big 'if', nor will we adjust our shooting schedule base on how many weeks something may take. Wednesday slot started off as an extra thing we chose, and will remain that way.

robodong

dude (pun intended), how is it not clear hes telling you to stop asking and stop trying to plan for them.

Spacedone

I can't promise that I'm going to watch all of the TNG reactions from the first season because some of those episodes, particularly early in the season, are just... bad.

JD Nevesytrof

Some say it was Biff's over-enthusiastic agent working independently. I was startled to see ol' Biff in a small but prominent role as the maintenance worker who gets bribed in "Parks and Recreation."

robodong

ya im sure theyre just in shambles

Young Blood Priest

S&G, as far as I can remember the dislike of Wesley isn’t because people think he’s an asshole but the silliness of a child being given access to high level areas like the bridge and engineering. For some viewers it made the show seem like a Saturday morning show.

Onikaze

no sync version seems to endlessly load on latest version of safari and macOS. works with same OS and Firefox tho.

Lintrinsic

Wesley is something of a marmite character, you either love him or hate him. Personally I think Wesley is definitely the problem, and I find the fact he got promoted to a bridge officer on the frigging flagship in episode 6, bypassing officers who had graduated from the academy and trained for years ridiculous. He's a smug little nepobaby and everything I hate about the child genius in sci-fi trope.

ChiefKC

For Simone, yes that was Armin Shimerman in "The Last Outpost" however he was not acting as Quark.

DonkyDave

bro take the hint and stop telling them what to do

Thall

I always start with season 2 episode 2. Episode 1 is the one with Diana and the lightbulb. Other than that, Measure of a Man, Q Who, inner Light and the one with the languages! Those always stick with me

Brandon

No apologies necessary about not using the HD remaster last week. Sadly, no such mistake will be made when you eventually get to DS9 and Voyager. Paramount and the powers that be just do NOT want to remaster anything after TNG for some reason. There's a great documentary called "Chaos on the Bridge" about the production of the early seasons of TNG. In short, it was a total shit show. The best part is that the doc was directed by William Shatner. I don't remember if they get into "Code of Honor" in the film, but the entire cast thought the episode was a really bad idea.

Chase Lonnergan

Yes! The introduction of my favorite Star Trek race! Goddamn, I love the Ferengi! The Rules of Acquisition have helped me a lot more in life than any Federation philosophy.

PIG

#106: Where No One Has Gone Before. Now we're entering what I feel like is the TNG I grew up with.

JD Nevesytrof

The Prime Directive is far far more broad in early TNG than in later. It is later codified as "Do not interfere with or pollute pre-warp societies" but early on like this, it's basically "Don't do anything to any society ever and let them do whatever they want to you or your people."

Brandon

I remember reading that a few years ago. The real insult is that they ended up remastering a decent amount of the series footage for the "What We Leave Behind" DS9 documentary.

KnittingHaven

I'm pretty sure George has said he read the book and is really looking forward to the movie.

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

I definitely DON'T talk to my ChatGPT like Picard and Riker sometimes talk to Data. *winks* I would NEVER talk to it like that just because it's a machine *winks* Oops, sorry, I must have something in my eye...

Nate Gavin

Ive forgotten how goofy some parts of the first season of TNG was. Even though TNG had some excellent canon creation, I still think that DS9 is the best of all the ST series. Just an opinion of course but I think by the end of the 7 seasons of TNG, you guys will need a break from this universe, and miss out on the best and most non ST series of the lot, which is a shame.

Patrick

As a kid I always used to remember the position of the Saturn-looking planet in the intro as a beat to when the narration started.

Brandon

I'm noticing a hesitancy to say some of these episodes are bad. It's OK to say Code of Honor is bad. 😅 But to be serious, if you really think these episodes aren't bad then the actual good episodes are going to melt your face off. "The Ferengis are really bad baddies" *shit-eating smirk that George can't see yet* 🤣

Robert Cooper

Code of Honor, officially the nadir of all of Star Trek.

GAB

Same with Windows 11 and Edge, but the Brave and Chrome browsers work just fine.

Vlasios Vougiouklis

a Ferengi - is a Frank - is a French - is a Latin - is a Westerner - is a Foreigner

JoeNotCharles

I always remember Where No One Has Gone Before coming later. Possibly because it just feels better written than the rest of the first season.

display

George’s obsession and impatience with “lore” will never not be entertaining and exhausting. Never change, George.

R. Chang

Oh man, the energy whips. I forgot about the energy whips. These early episodes are so rough.

Darren Harrison

I have never seen "Star Trek: Next Generation", though I have seen the Chris Pine movies. Is this supposed to be a comedy? The acting and dialogue are so OTT. I am hoping it gets better

Will Sofer

It’s the influence of Gene Roddenberry that you’re seeing. Trying to recreate the feeling of the original series. Everything gets exponentially better as his influence over the production wanes.

Will Sofer

“The Inner Light” still lives rent-free in my head to this day. “Darmok” is also a really intriguing concept.

Will Sofer

I remember my young mind trying in vain to make sense of the physics. They’re kind of nonsensical.

Will Sofer

In addition to being a Mary Sue stand-in for Gene Roddenberry, and young Wheaton’s strange acting choices. The latter does improve. Mostly.

Dan

@Kane Is Able TBH I wanted to get in the suggestion to not watch the trailer if they don't already know the story.

JGoss

At least there's one thing to appreciate with Code of Honor, the throwback TOS-like score from Fred Steiner.

D

I also usually don’t watch season one. This is wild lol

Brandon

IMO there are reasons to dislike Wesley and we'll see some of that in later episodes... BUT I think a lot of it comes from people who were in their early teens at the time the series began and deeply resented seeing another kid get to hang out on the Enterprise. 😆

Data Cable

Stardates in the TNG era follow a pattern: First digit is 4 (possibly originally inspired by 24th century), second digit is the (TNG) season number, and the last three digits generally increase over the season, though there are occasional hiccups. The decimal number is kinda randomly tacked-on. Starting with DS9's 5th and Voyager's 3rd seasons, corresponding to TNG's "10th" season, Stardates began with 50.

Danny Bryant

Cinebinge is like a box of chocolates...

Matt O'Keefe

Yes, Yes!! There are a rare few great episodes in the first 2 seasons. 3 has some great episodes and the occasional not great ones, then it's clear sailing for the rest of the show with the occasional misfire every now and then.

Robert Cooper

It is definitely a high point of S1. Like so many things, I'm not a huge fan of what recent Trek has done with that legacy.

Ciarra Jade

I like Wesley.. but I do notice alot of the older generations like boomers and Gen X really dislike Wesley. Maybe you’re right about them seeing another kid on the enterprise

Joel

Love those Ferengi energy whips!! ROFL

DasBigUn

Imma be very direct Gorge; A LOT of questions you have are answerd within TNG or are hinted at. I mean, the Ferangi ALONE do a massive 180 with the next episode they are in (or maybe the one after that). As for the timeline; the stardates use a math to make them work and everything (unless alternate universes or time-travel is involved) is going forward.

R. Chang

Re: Wesley. I think one big reason that people don't like Wesley is that he was put in the show for young fans to identify with. Young, smart, awkward, ignored. But young nerds didn't really want to think of themselves as the know-it-all kid. As an adult, I can look at Wesley and appreciate the character. As a kid, he just reminded me of things I didn't like about myself. I wanted to watch the show and think of myself as Riker or Picard, but it was hard to do with Wesley butting in all them time, reminding me that I was a socially awkward nerd.

G P

I'm sure its been mentioned here, but the first ~2 seasons were largely scripts left over from TOS, and I think there was a reason they didn't make it to air initially.

BridgesNotBurned

This rewatch is going to be GREAT! So good. Happy Star Trek Day!! 🖖🖖😂

TomGas2025

The problem with Wesley from a German viewpoint in my opinion is that unfortunately they gsve him the same dubbing voice as Steve Urkel and Spongebob Squarepants have. This for me at last gave me a hard time to take him serious. Watching in english changed this completely...I appreciated him much more. One of the few instances where the casting agency for the dubbing did a not so good job in german TV. J Usually they are much much better And if I recall it correctly, Picard only said "Shut up Wesley!" Once, maximum twice...its just a meme that was just too much.

TomGas2025

It all hits thw right spot with Best of Both Worlds...there the series reached Warpspeed!!

TomGas2025

Well...try to see it within Universe...different Species, different Tech, different physics usage.

Brandon

It might be part of the reason I didn't like him much when I was a young kid seeing TNG for the first time. I'm mostly cool with him as an adult, though.

John

Thank you, I really appreciate the 3 episode format per week and I hope it continues. I recognize it is extra work

John Smith

With regards to the schedule - if you two need to drop it down to one episode per week (or even less), then do that. I, for one, would prefer you take years to finish rather than burn out forcing yourselves to watch a great show.

Daniel

regarding Ep04: There's a reason, this felt like as TOS Episode - it basically was. At the beginning of the 70s, Roddenberry tried to revive TOS with a project called "Phase II". Several scripts were written, but never filmed. One of those was repurposed for Star Trek The Motion Picture, while others were recycled later on for TNG. Code of honor was one of those - and imho not what I would call "good".

sarCC

lol What a wild question, especially since the majority of the Chris Pine STAR TREK is a comedy.

MacGuffinStuff

I liked Wesley when I was a kid, I actually did kind of relate to him back then, because I remember programming my parents' VCR and doing that at my parents' friend's houses when I was like 6, they couldn't figure it out and it was like something ridiculously easy lol, and I do remember programming someone's VCR to record TNG when it came on. Boomers... I'm just kidding, really. Also, seeing Denise Crosby (LT Yar) with a cat gave me flashbacks to "Pet Sematary" . And speaking of flashbacks (a myth btw, well I'm still waiting for one, all I get is a lot of Deja vu), how about that last episode? Peak Sci Fi, peak Star Trek, love the trippy stuff. I think it's my favorite so far of this season. And a Happy Star Trek Wednesday to you all.

Drell77

Yay, Star Trek Day. I never understood the Wesley hate, I was a young teenager when this show aired and I have always like his character but my friends at the time said he was a know it all kid who seemed to be smarter than all the trained Starfleet officers that should know more than him but I never saw it that way. There are a few times where he is a bit on the annoying side but overall I have always enjoyed his character

p0sthum4n

I'm prob going to wait for more episodes but man this is gonna rule.

Christina Doxstader

TNG, DS9 and Voyager have this weird thing where the first couple seasons are very hit and miss, especially the first seasons, but then they find their groove and it's mostly great. For me, at least with TNG and DS9, it involves a hairdo change. If you know you know lol

Stephen Morris

I really needed this today. We had to put my dog down today, you helped me forget about the pain for three hours. Thank you.

Cinebinge

damn sorry to hear that Stephen, hope youre taking care of yourself!

PIG

Makes sense

PIG

I tried watching recent trek but couldn’t make it through

Cory Garron

BCS is good and all, but it will never have an episode like The Traveller one. Star Trek will have court cases, but not many shows will have a "Where No One Has Gone Before". Maybe an Arya going West of Westeros though.

Alan Kobb

The Wesley syndrome. Star Trek fans and particularly Sci-Fi fans are always a bit worried about the tendancy to cast a character-type just to attract a desired audience rather than just trust the viewers. From the time the cast was announced, the Wesley character was seen as a heavy-handed attempt to attract the youth audience. As an example from Star Wars, look at the Ewoks, and Jar-Jar Binks, all characters who were designed to sell toys rather than because they actually added to the story. It was not hard to understand that fans saw Wesley as an attempt to draw a younger audience who would be more likely to buy the toys and games that they had in mind. From time to time, Wesley does seem very much like that. Actually he plays and important part in this story, but to the jaded fan his "promotion" at the end is just the end-game to inject him into every story. The good news is that over the entire series run, Wesley was not terribly overused., and he played the character pretty well. A similar response was seen several years later when promotional photos for Star Trek Voyager season 4 showed a very sexy new female character wearing a skin-tight outfit. You can imagine the fans reaction to that, but imagine their surprise when the character turned out to be very interesting and the actress, Jeri Ryan turned out to be fantastic. The upshot is that Sci Fi always trys to put in characters to draw a desired audience or sell toys, and fans will always complain, and for every Jar-Jar there will be a Seven-of-Nine. Wesley wasn't a superstar, but he wasn't as bad as the nay-sayers claimed.

Dave Hampton

I am glad these videos are doing so well for you. With all the comments I hope you will see this one. I was looking forward to you two watching this series. So far, your reactions have been even better than I hoped. I am really enjoying them. Where none have gone before is the first really good episode IMHO though enjoy them all and do not have the dislike for the first season or two like others (though I admit they are not as good as the future seasons). I am glad you are not letting the opinions of others that you have heard (ie about Wesley) cloud your judgment. I like Wesley and do not understand the hate he gets. Glad you do too so far. I look forward to you discovering the lore behind "Shut up Wesley".

The Real Andrew Kim

Someone probably already commented this, but Code of Honor is pretty much regarded as the most racist if not the worst episode of all of Star Trek. It is a miracle the show survived passed the 3rd/4th episode. Most people skip season 1 because of this episode specifically, i watch it when i do marathons, but man it is always rough and i never actively choose to watch this one. If there is one name to blame for the racist and misogynist story telling in the early seasons, it is executive producer Maurice Hurley who was a veteran TV producer who mostly worked in crime/police stories which I believe colors his social outlook. His main credits include Kung fu (the show that had a white guy play the main character that was suppose to go to Bruce Lee) and Baywatch which probably tells you a lot about him. Also slight spoiler alert, there will be a major shake up in the main cast in season 2 and he is the one to blame for that.

Dee Aitch

Cinebinge: The acting in this series is miles and miles above TOS. LaForge: Whoo wee!

dudewheresmycar

Was only throwing suggestions and ideas which can be freely ignored, not making demands. 😊

Dee Aitch

I feel the annoyance of Wesley has been well-established by now. If you don't see that, then it's an agree to disagree moment. Also Simone's cat (whatever it's name is) is fucking awesome. I would love to have such a patient loving lap cat.

Dee Aitch

Yeah, this has been painful. None of these episodes have stood up, including the last one of this batch. And we haven't even gotten to the most ugh episode that I remember. I'm trusting in Simone that it gets better though.

Ben Schwartz

Yes, the Ferengi of early TNG are quite different from the Ferengi in DS9.

Ben Schwartz

1 episode a week would be agonizingly-slow lol

Ben Schwartz

I hope I'm not the only one, but I found it hard to get through some of this... I like watching the non-synced versions, but I can't stand Simone's laughing... but only because it's too loud-- like her mic is too loud in the mix. I can't set the volume at one level and be able to consistently hear the dialogue as well as George and Simone's commentary. George's mic level is perfect. But unfortunately I have to sync up my own copy and watch that way.

Katrine Myra

Yeah, the Jean threw me off! They were still figuring things out - it's interesting to see.

Katrine Myra

I'm just going to say it - the frist season suffers terribly from having Rodenberry at the helm. I won't go into details for spoiler reasons, but generally speaking, his vision for the show and the way he wanted it written just... did not work. The tone is all over the place, it feels kind of like TOS, but with a different color scheme. Which is not to say it's bad - just not as great as it grew to be. I think Simone's reaction is typical - I'm a huge fan of the show too, and I barely remember the first season, only the main plot points of major episodes. I hope you'll keep watching and share your thoughts - I'd love to hear more about how someone who watched the newer movies experience the show!

Katrine Myra

I don't think it's spoiling anything to say that the Ferrengi were heavily reworked in later series - thankfully! And while I know this, it's still a shock to see how bad they actually were. A goblin-like race of little ugly aliens with exaggerated features, who are greedy, covet gold and creep on women... there are some Not Great stereotype implications there...! From what I understand, Armin Shimerman was asked to give input on how to improve the Ferrengi when playing the role for which he is famous - and what a fantastic job he did. It's bizarre to see him in this (and how young he is)!

Christina Doxstader

I don't particularly care for Voyager myself but I was just saying that the early seasons of all 3 shows are uneven simply because they are trying to find their feet and get much better once they do.

Simon Pegged Me

Patrick Stewart said on the Graham Norton Show that they toyed with Jean-Luc Picard having a French accent, and somewhere at Paramount, there's a tape of him reading the introduction with it.

dc

@REDR58 the opening credits are the same for seasons 1 and 2, then change to the graphics seen in the rest of the season. Season 5 has fancier text on the main Star Trek graphic.

gfixler

I like George's notion that humans can't avoid having random thoughts. Meanwhile, I'm over here routinely staring off into space, going effectively brain-dead for extended periods.

gfixler

I didn't know people didn't like Wesley when I was growing up, because I grew up out in the woods, and I was into smart things, so he was actually a hero to me. I always related most to him, and wanted to be a kid on a starship, too, just like him. He was a little bit older than me, so he was like the smart kid I looked up to. It was when I grew up, and the internet came to be, that I learned there were a ton of people not like me, who thought he was a really annoying, know-it-all kid (which I also related to, because I was the nerd, computer programmer, before anyone had a computer at home, etc.). I think people didn't like that he was a nerd, and that he was a total "aw, shucks," earnest kind of person, so he came off a bit goofy. Pshh... people.

Craig

Oof, Code of Honour to start. My least favourite episode. When Tasha says she feels flattered by Lutan's attention it makes my skin crawl. Can definitely tell it was written by someone born in the 40's. I think it's the cast and crews' least favourite episode, too.

Den Radar Ryan

I can imagine how much fun those 3 actors had playing the Ferengi in episode 1x05 lol. After hours in the makeup chair they must have had ridiculous fun in character. 🙃

Adrian

TNG ‘Code of Honor’ is so bad it’s unwatchable.

Joe Stacey

'Code of Honour' is one of the worst episodes of all Star Trek. This is the first time I've seen it in decades, and even then I seriously considered skipping it.

Neal Riggins

I am the same as Simone. I watched all of TNG when they came out but don't remember any specifics to the episodes. While I remember basic knowledge, I feel like I'm watching it again for the first time. So fun.

Logan Kerlee

I love that you're doing 3 episodes a week from now on. :) It'll help so much with this show. :D Don't get me wrong, I've really enjoyed everything so far, it'll just help in getting through the show and I love being able to watch more Trek. xD Watched all three episodes and had a blast. Didn't write a book for a comment this time because I just wanted to focus on the show. :) I'll be writing comments for this off and on I think. :)

Jpsynergy

George is right in that those damn Ferengi are real annoying and distracting in episode 5. Code of Honor also has it's issues. I'd say Season 1-2 aren't as bad as everyone says but yeah there are some oof ones in there. Can't wait until season three.

Angzarr

Spaase, ze feenal fronteer. Zeese are les voyhages de la spaase sheep anterpreeze.

Angzarr

OMG, Wesley sharing a voice with Urkel and Spongebob is hillarious!

Angzarr

Many people seem to think that Darmok is one of the worst episodes, but I could not disagree more.

Angzarr

An ACTUAL female Ferengi cosplay (meaning, full-body prosthetics) would be kind of interesting though. Probably still not allowed at cons though!

In 106 I had to smile at the Riker line "It wasn't him. It never was. It was his assistant." There's a funny clip of Stewart teasing Frakes about this at some convention. Apparently Frakes kept blowing the line over and over and got increasingly frustrated, which only made it worse. "It wasn't him, it never was, it wazizistant. It wasn't him, it never waszizwasiztant. IT WASN'T HIM, IT NEVER WAS, IT WAZIZTANT!"

More fun trivia: the actor who plays The Traveler was the runner up to play Data.

Lintrinsic

And he since quit acting and is now an attorney.

Lintrinsic

I've heard his French accent, it sounds like a bad Inspector Clouseau impersonation. It was a lucky escape.

Lintrinsic

Not part of the Federation, but they are allied with the Federation.

It was a little like Engineering was run by shift managers like it was a McDonald's in early TNG. The stupid thing is Argyle was arguably the best of the bunch (although a little cut price Scotty IMO) and his role increasing could easily have happened organically (as it did elsewhere) if they'd left it alone.

Dan

That's so interesting! Thanks for the perspective!

Dan

Glad they made the right decision!

106 with you guys was an AMAZING treat! Who would have expected Simone to have somehow missed this episode after being a Trekkie for so long, and for her to see this with fresh eyes while George sees the first good episode of the series? Such a delight to have two reactors on different ends of the experience-spectrum piecing the story together at the same time! Her eyes while the traveler foretells a prophecy (for lack of a better word) -- priceless! I definitely won't find that anywhere else! Bookmarked for sure, I'll be rewatching this one many times in the future!

Dan

Oh and John de Lancie, who plays Q, was Jane's father in Breaking Bad -- the air traffic controller who took his own life. RIP Donald Margolis. It was great to see him onscreen again in that show after seeing him on TNG.

TomGas2025

Not really...aftar a few episodes it gets really irritating!!

I have always loved the idea of what Wesley Crusher is... and yet pretty much hated 90% of his actual onscreen time. It's hard to explain, but there it is. I see Wesley stepping up to Mary Sue an episode again and facepalm, yet live for the episodes that deepen his lore.

Tall Paul

Three opportunities to say "Patreons press play on my mark, 3,2,1,mark" missed! Come on George, embrace the fandom. I'd settle for "engage" Interesting George is enjoying Wesley's early arc. I did too, although in my defence I was Wesley's age

Jomero

Some people think it was Kirk, Picard, or Riker, but I am nearly positive that Wesley was Roddenberry's "Mary Sue." My theory about why Wesley gets too much hate from fans? Many fans would like to think that if they were somehow magically transported to the ST universe and met characters like Picard that they would act cool like Riker. But the reality is that they'd probably act like Wesley. ;-)

May suggest, beside Andor cof cof, to watch The Orville, between Star Trek seasons? I have only watch some episodes but I like that Trekie feeling universe of this show, if you take out the Seth McFarlen comedy , I like some of the stories I have watched

Stevtrek

Yeah, I never understood the Wesley hate either.

Sean O'Hara

Roddenberry's middle name was Wesley

Robert Gendron

They were working on a revival of the Original Series, Star Trek Phase II, but decided to make the movies instead. A lot of the ideas for that revival like Commander Decker and Ilia in the first movie are very similar to Riker and Troi. Plus season 1 scripts didn't really know how this cast would flesh things out, so there's a lot of Original Series feel to early TNG. I almost think of S1 as the Original Series season 4, with Season 2 of TNG being where they really figure out the feel of TNG

Wormtongue

One hand shake and the Traveler was alright again. Praise the lord and his son Jesus Crusher ;)

Michael Kemmet

Haven is episode 111. They'll get to it next week. Production codes(Haven is 105) are based on the order they start working on an episode. Sometimes there will be discrepancies between production codes and airing order because it takes longer to finish certain episodes(esp. VFX), or it makes sense to film chunks of multiple episodes together because they all use the same location.

Michael Kemmet

Something to add about the Wesley hate from the time: This was towards the end of a period of sci-fi TV where it felt like every show just HAD to have a token kid character. I think part of the Wesley hate was just built-up resentment towards the trope. I'm not saying this was the ONLY reason for the dislike, but I think it might have colored the initial view of the character and given the show very little leeway to screw up. Then add a couple annoying character traits(rapid speech, golden retriever energy) and a couple bad episodes, and you have the recipe for unreasonable dislike from a rabid fanbase. I also think many of the cast(coughPatrickStewartcough) weren't thrilled with having to deal with a kid actor(and his parents - whole other nightmare story there) and a little of that bled onto the screen.

Chris Graham

Love this show! I won't give spoilers and hopefully you will continue to watch Trek through all interactions but please check out Star Trek Prodigy (timeline specific!) as well, some very VERY Interesting concepts there!!

Dinker

Actually as far as I know the entire cast had a very cordial and friendly/mentor-like relationship with Wil Wheaton, apparently all of them unaware of the abuse he was suffering from his parents.

Michael Kemmet

Oh, I'm absolutely not saying anyone on the cast(including Patrick Stewart) disliked Wil Wheaton the person. But there have been many reports that Stewart wasn't happy with the overall vibe of the set the first few seasons. He came in as a serious British theatre actor, and the rest of the cast were far more laid back LA TV actors. I think having a token kid character(again, character, not actor) was probably just one more strike against the production in the back of his head. Like a "what have I gotten myself into?" sort of thing. I think you can see just a touch of that in his performance the first couple seasons when Picard interacts with Wesley. Everything eventually settles down a little ways down the road, but I think just enough of that awkwardness comes through early in the show where it was just a little bit easier for viewers to dislike Wes if you were already leaning that way. (I wasn't, but I'm only a couple years younger than Wil.) As a counter-example to Wes/Data in TNG, Boxy in BSG '78, or C-3PO/R2-D2/Ewoks in SW, you had J. Michael Straczynski's motto for Babylon 5: "No cute kids. No cute robots. Ever!" lol But this is all just my opinions and impressions from someone that was watching from almost the beginning. (I think my first episode was Skin of Evil. What a way to start - lol)

punterjoe

Congratulations. You made it through the cringiest TNG episode. I'm glad "Code of Honor" is still included in the series. Other shows have removed (redacted?) ... problematic episodes. It happened. It sure back in the day. No matter how embarrassing, I respect that they left it on. Just know you've been through the worst (with one possible contender towards the end of the series - but no spoilers). Breathe easier knowing even the 'bad' episodes are not Code of Honor bad. I agree that this felt like a script from 1966. And even then, I doubt it works get past the network censors.

Basilisk

I'm so glad to be seeing you guys trek through this series, but based on a couple of questions/comments from George, I *really* can't wait until you get to Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Also, that episode in this block, "Code of Honor" is viewed to be one of, if not THE most problematic Star Trek episode. The cast view it as racist, and in most places where the series is viewable, that episode has been removed from the service.

Anthony Varra

There is a reading rainbow episode where they go behind the scenes with Lavar Burton in season one is an interesting watch

Guts

I forgot what a great episode "Where No One Has Gone Before" is. Really amazing. One of the few stand-outs from season 1.

Lord Joe

Sorry, but Will Wheaton and Levar Burton were cast as top actors from the start. The entire cast knew this and couldn't wait to work with them on this series. Both were already known as exceptional actors and had already played leading roles in feature films. The rest of the crew (except for Patrick Stewart) were completely unknown at the beginning. Patrick Stewart, as a Shakespearean stage actor, wasn't used to acting in a TV series and couldn't handle the relaxed atmosphere on set, but that had absolutely nothing to do with Will Wheaton and his role as Whesley Crusher.

I just joined because I wanted to see how much George was going to enjoy the beginning episodes of TNG and to see the happiness of Simone as George has questions that she knows the answers too but just looks at the camera as if to tell us that she knows but she wont tell George. LOL... But also, I forget the beginning of the star dates, but you'll notice that the 5.1 or 6.1 at the end refers to the episode of that season and I believe the .1 means season 1, but I might be wrong. Keep enjoying these as you continue the journey and thanks for posting these without us needing our own copy too! Loving it so far!

photos_by_geoff

Ok, I just watched episode 6. The star date has a 6 in there, but the .1 and .2 and .3 are corresponding to the acts. So after the 2nd commercial break Captain Picard said .3 signaling the 3rd act. So I got it all wrong. But now I am pretty sure that any episode where it starts out with the star date, shpuld start the show as ".1". :) I am going to be trying to figure out the rest without Googling it. I am sure that the season and episode are in each as well. But foguring out the other numbers will be difficult. I feel up to the challenge though. :)

photos_by_geoff

And... That seems wrong now. I have t figured iut the logic, but I do know that it is supposed to have the season and the episode in each star date. LOL

Sophie's Walking Stick

I watched this episode on TV when it first aired. Was really worried about Tasha being abducted, and when she said she felt flattered it was like a record skip. Like, WHAT? In what universe?! Now reading everyone else's responses it makes sense to me that this was some kind of The Sheik (1920 movie) abduction fantasy by the writer.

Sophie's Walking Stick

When I first saw TNG in college I didn't like the way Crusher pushes for Wesley to get everything he wants, excuses every mistake he makes and aggressively defends him from imagined slights. Now that I'm much older with grown children of my own I REALLY hate that. I felt like Trek at this time period didn't really know how to portray any love relationship other than star crossed yearning, and now I can add that they didn't know how to portray a healthy mother-son relationship either.
