Finally Wednesday...

Robban6948

Almost three hours of Star Trek-Cinebinge goodness! Sometimes the world is a kind place 😄

droodly

Reaction and video seem out of sync to anyone else? Seems to be both versions.

Daniel Dawson

Looks like the reaction audio and episode are out of sync in the no sync required version (ironically). Audio is a few seconds ahead of the episode, at least up until the 18 min mark. Simone's attempt at calling the start of the Captain's Oath ("Space...") in the intro is a good reference point :)

droodly

Looks to be the inclusion of the paramount logo intro? If I start my copy at the beginning the reaction matches, but the video is off by the length of the paramount logo.

D

Happy TNG day

Cinebinge

yeah im trying to figure out why its doing this... because the file used in the edit is literally the actual file we watched. sooo why the sync is different, when its the exact file, is very perplexing.

Mastervodo

To go boldly in a bold way that boldness has never bolded before!

Ian Tellam

The reaction seems about 5 seconds ahead of the show in the uncovered version. At least in the first episode.

Cinebinge

yep looking into this. the file used in the edit is literally the actual file we watched. sooo why the sync is different, when its the exact file, is very perplexing. will update when figured out why.

Cinebinge

looking into sync issue right now. the file used in the edit is literally the actual file we watched. sooo why the sync is different, when its the exact file, is very perplexing. will update when figured out why.

No worries. I’ll just go old school and use the Netflix version for now :)

Temba His Arms Wide

Season one is difficult for me to watch because I can't stand baby-face Riker. It's just WRONG. Riker should always have a beard.

Adam Barry

The lag between your reactions and the first episode seems about the same as the paramount plus logo at the start. If you trim that off it would probably be pretty close. Did you watch it without that at the start?

Cinebinge

tried it. if i do that for some reason by the end of the second half of the same episode, it goes out of sync. this goes for all 3 episodes. its as if all 3 episodes has 5 seconds missing in the edit, but its scattered throughout and accumulated over time.

Adam Barry

Almost sounds like a framerate mismatch - 30fps vs 29.97fps or something like that.

Cinebinge

yep thats what im trying to figure out why its different because the file is the literal same one, the edit file and the one used to watch is the exact same file.

Mastervodo

George and Simone - I don't know if you realize this, but a significant portion of your viewers - specifically 60% - that are subscribed are commenting about the video possibly being out of synch.

Robert Gendron

So, has George clocked who's voicing Enterprise's computer yet?

Nick Scholz

The no sync link is also giving server errors.

G Lam

I went to watch a local copy with your non-no-sync post (the way we are all used to), and weirdly, I noticed 3/4 through the episode it was synced perfectly. I didn't spot where it changed. and unfortunately can't rewatch right now to test (nor can I check whether the 2nd episode is in sync (I'm sure Simone would confirm quickly though). But the sync DOES line up later in the first of the 3 episodes

Ron

Some cuts in the Paramount+ version come back from black very quickly compared with the bluray. I think this is the bulk of the error. Mostly, these fade-out/fade-in time differences are commercial breaks but not always. (I'm assuming that the local video is synced correctly after the P+ logo at the beginning.) Outside of these fade-out/fade-in differences, the video seems to be synced for the most part. I tested for about 10 min in eps 7 and 8.

Cinebinge

that was likely a code push moment at the exact same time as attempt to access, try again now.

Northern Loon

Yep. The no sync link is also not working on my side and showing "Servor Error".

Krong

It seems to be working for me now

Northern Loon

Edit: It worked for me on latest try !

Robban6948

I can't even tell you how much we appreciate all your hard work!

Cinebinge

yep its very odd. no idea why it starts off wrong but becomes fine at random points over time. the version we watched is the exact same file too, with the paramount logo and all.

Chase Lonnergan

Of course people are going to hate others over economic systems. Economic systems create social dynamics, cultural attitudes, and political processes. If those economic systems are based on the destruction of other economic systems, then they are a threat to the social dynamics, cultural attitudes, and political processes of the adherents of those economic systems. For example, I own a business, every socialist, leftist, communist, and "liberal" is a threat to the business that I have built, because their entire economic system is built on taking it, and the benefits of it, away from me. Why wouldn't I hate that?

Mikebdrx

Appreciate both of you and everything yall do for this channel!

Cinebinge

the issue is that the reaction starts off out of sync by a large margin then becomes in sync after a while bit my bit. so its not like a regular frame rate drift or commercial break drift where it becomes out of sync over time. Instead it becomes in sync over time. Yet it is the exact same video file between watching and editing, including the Paramount+ logo portion.

Mastervodo

It's a long-running joke Kane.

Andrew R

Let us test watch next week's episodes just to make sure 😁

gfixler

In terms of fixing the audio sync issues, have you tried reversing the polarity of the primary coils in the EPS manifold? It could be a fluctuation buildup in the secondary phase transducers.

Guillaume Huet_rennibou

I've had this issue that, sometimes, a movie played slightly faster or slower (at normal running speed) than the exact same movie edited for a full lengh-reaction. Forcing to resync the video every now and then in order to correct the couple of seconds lost or gained overtime. But why?? this I never understood. Is it a slight variation in the actual running speed of movies from one platform to the other? A bias of the editing software? But one second is one second right? ^^

Doug

I know when syncing with the DVD there's an issue where it was 24 fps and P+ was something like 23.9 fps but it doesn't make sense when it's both P+, maybe check the frame rate between your cameras and the P+ file

Patrick

Yeah, famously liberals, lefists and socialists never support local businesses. Co-ops, for example, just came into existence out of nothing.

Cinebinge

all files are handbraked to 30 fps exact before we record, all versions we watch are always 30 exactly the same as our recordings

overdev

we need to bet on when Simone gets the timing of the intro right haha :D

Paul Mix

Hm. I'm syncing the Episode 7 full reaction to the BluRays now (based on the background video), and it looks like the title sequence and commercial breaks are timed differently than the footage in the background of George & Simone (assuming that's the Paramout+ footage). If I trim the black space and re-sync the subsequent footage on the first hard cut after each commercial break, the episode itself remains in sync after each edit until the next commercial break, which must then be trimmed and re-synced. I don't have exact figures, but the amount trimmed from each commercial break (and therefore the variance between blu-ray and P+ copies) seemed inconsistent. After trimming the commercial breaks, the timing of George & Simone's reactions seem to match the episode content (based on random comments between each break, haven't watched the whole thing). EDIT: The timing of their reactions to episode 7 seemed to match the background footage after trim-editing, but the reactions to episode 8 seemed early (e.g. George's first reaction to the inhabitants after the titles comes shortly before the cut from the Enterprise in the background footage).

G Lam

It's not a sync drift... it remained perfectly in sync for at least 15 mins at the end. Almost as if ~5 seconds disappeared somewhere and then appeared. Honestly I have no idea where though. I had VLC running on top of the normal Patreon version, and it was out of sync for at least 10 minutes, I looked up around 30 mins and it was in sync with the "background version" you do there, at it was in sync, and stayed perfectly in sync to the end. Big shrug on my side.. I have no idea where it changed.

dasgrove

Time for my Wednesday treat!

JD Nevesytrof

You guys I have a sink issue, when I use hot water it drains fine but when I use cold water it goes something like wugg-wugg-wugg-wugg

Maura Gillies

That sync thing is wild, but thank you for trying so hard to get it working!

gfixler

It's so interesting to watch these episodes again, decades later. So much forgotten stuff, so much made up memory. I remember the infraction as Wesley stepping off the path, and the kids being upset, and Wesley standing on the grass, confused why it was a problem, and I even recall a little sign next to him that said "keep off the grass." I had it all jumbled. When they first beam down to the planet, they all beam down onto grass, and I said "wait, what?" Then they all ran around on the grass for a while, and I realized I didn't really remember exactly how this all played out. I completely forgot about the zone thing, too.

Paul Mix

Confirmed the commercial drift is in all three episodes. Thanks a lot, Paramount. I *hate* it when streaming companies alter material like this. If this is the norm for all episodes going forward, I may need to switch to the No Sync. What's weird is I didn't need to do this for episodes 4-6; in that reaction, the blu-ray episodes synced up perfectly with George's background footage.

R. Chang

Start Trek transporter rules are all over the place. They're capable of beaming someone from any location in range to any other location in range. In show lingo, this is called "Site to site" transport. Since we know that they can beam from pad to anywhere and anywhere to pad, it's conceivable that site-to-site transport just chains these without the pad re-materialization phase. As to why they don't always do this, it's implied at times to be more energy efficient or safer to use the pad, so they do so when it's not an emergency or when it isn't time critical (if you're on the ship, just walking to the pad has got to be more energy efficient than beaming you there). But they're not really consistent with it, so you just kind of have to accept it.

G Lam

Jees.. looks like you fixed it already, I just tried to narrow it down for you. But couldn't find it out of sync. The effort you put in, to even look at something post-release speaks volumes... Thank you. Also, Simone needs to be the sync guide for TNG from now on! Use the tools you have.... We're certainly going to use that guide.

Cinebinge

hi Paul, i dont think its just commercial breaks. because again the file we watched during the recording, is the exact same file used in the edit. so if the 3 episodes had different commercial break times, then our recording should reflect that. rather than the first 15 minutes being off sync then suddenly becoming on sync again. ive also just checked next weeks episode recordings and theyre all fine. something odd just happened to these 3 specific episodes. or the recordings themselves.

Niklas Ekman

Thank you for your efforts in quickly fixing these synch issues.

robodong

i will never understand the 'anti-liberal' crowd being fans of S&G. like... our 2 hosts couldnt be further from the far right lol.

G Lam

Simone's not wrong..... kinda. In terms of physics, travelling 1km uses the same energy regardless of how quickly you do it (not accounting for crazy high speed where wind-resistance becomes a big factor... or relativity at crazy speeds). But yeah, humans are squishy, and running takes more out of us unfortunately. It takes more muscles to run than walk. Kangaroos have this nailed though... check in with them... they figured out how to go fast and hardly burn any extra grass fuel.

howtocookazombie (Stan)

Movie suggestion: "Tenet" from 2020. Probably has been suggested a million times already, but it is a really interesting movie. 😁

robodong

they already did this, years ago. can be found with search bar on main page.

JiggyTurtle

Good news: They've already reacted to Tenet

Ian Tellam

Regarding the transporter... You can beam from and to a transporter pad, so the Ferenghi just beamed from their ship onto the bridge. You can also beam place to place - but technically the transporter signal is still being routed via a transporter pad somewhere. So basically you get beamed from a location, to the pad, and then onto the destination - but it doesn't bother materializing you at the pad - more like being routed through a server. Another thing that's interesting about transporters is that although your body is dematerialized and sent as energy and then rebuilt, your consciousness remains intact and active through the whole process in real time. Because your consciousness is considered pure data (according to the metaphysics of this show at least) it doesn't need to be destroyed, just transmitted and then reunited with your physical body at the destination. You can form thoughts, perceive things and even communicate to some degree while being transported. You literally are the same person (mentally) the whole time and it avoids the 'Prestige' type questions of are you really 'you' at the other end.

Ian Tellam

I don't think energy efficiency would be the main issue given the crazy power they can generate, but I can see it being safer. Transporter accidents are definitely a thing, and it's been so long since I watched TNG I'm not sure but I tend to think of direct place to place as more of an emergency thing, and a one step, to and from pad transit is usually the preferred route, especially for people. Of course ultimately it comes down what serves the plot in any specific episode.

Patrick

And Star Trek of all things too.

G Lam

(Not a spoiler).. George's thoughts about different species tolerance of what is considered torture is addressed in a Season 3 episode. I'll give no further info on that unless asked directly (in private), because I really don't want to spoil anything, especially since George thinks about and picks up on this stuff. And yes, again he's right.. about animals acting morally differently. Blue Footed Boobies (the bird, calm down), will happily discard their second child to feed the stronger one instead, leaving the younger/weaker one to starve and die. But to us, it's like... "you have literally two children... look after them both.

Chase Lonnergan

"Far right" is a bullshit term to dehumanize, villify, and demonize anyone that doesn't want their children to suffer the horrors of the USSR, Maoist CHina, North Korea, Vietnam, Myanmaar, or Cuba. I reject the designation. But... Being on the MODERATE Right, you have to learn to accept that 90% of the people who are involved in entertainment would have no trouble starving millions of Kulaks to death with a smile on their face, and enjoy the entertainment.

Patrick

Who is this 90% you're on about? Where are you getting that from?

Lintrinsic

I've always found Justice a sad episode, a golden opportunity to offload Wesley squandered. What a waste.

Chase Lonnergan

Almost the entire output of Hollywood films and TV shows, as well as the social media posts and interview content of every entertainer that isn't on an unofficial blacklist for not being on the Left.

Patrick

Yeah, I thought you were going in that direction. We'll leave it at that.

Paul Mix

Yes, that's very strange. I'm always curious how you sync up the footage between you, Simone, and the footage itself. Sometimes on the Patreon versions the video footage behind you two is somewhat off from the reaction (sometimes a program brightness change illuminates your face out of sync from the background video, or a laugh might slightly precede an action on screen). I always sync up at the first hard cut of the program material itself, as there can be variations in releases (different intros, studio cards, pauses, etc.) complicating syncing from the start of a video file, but I'm not sure how you'd be able to do that yourself without some visual sync-point reference in your actual reaction video (for both you *and* Simone), and in any case that doesn't sound like what happened here. Anyway, always grateful for all your efforts… you're saving so much effort for 99% of your viewers with your No Cuts releases, while still providing a "raw" copy for those of us who want to customize things like aspect ratio & audio mixing.

megamoo chilli

A better ending to 108 would be after they beam Wes away the object nukes the planet and says "That crop is ruined. I'll have to start again." instead of literally nothing. It's like they wrote themselves into a corner and couldn't think of how to end it so Picard says something and its allll cool.

DasBigUn

OK....the Ferangi get FAR better after season 1. FAR FAR BETTER...same with Q. Id love to talk/hint about things too calm in many a show and about the additional NON SPOILER lore for Star Trek universe

R. Chang

My favorite quote about frozen yogurt (vs. ice cream) from my favorite show, The Good Place (that you should definitely react to). "There's something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it."

Patrick

My favourite thing about Jen's reaction is how easy it was to sync up episodes as she sung along to the intro. Edit* Actually helped in this reaction too with syncing things up!

Jacob

On George asking how do people fall asleep with noise and lights on and not pitch black silence. Pretty simple really, I find it really hard sometimes to fall asleep in perfect silence with nothing but my own thoughts. My mind will just run and I struggle to fall asleep.

Thomas Yanez

I love when Simone gives a look to the camera when she sees something that she can't mention. George thinks S01E07 is just a bad episode, and for the most part he's right, but Simone knows what seeds were sown for a couple of fan favorite recurring character arcs. To avoid spoilers, I'll have to leave it as a mystery.

fforw

Have you tried reversing the polarity of the projector matrix? The subharmonics might produce a positive tachyon flux..

BellaBlue

W Wednesday S 2 starting soon..I'd like to request Wednesday S 1. It. has its haters but I found it very enjoyable and think you would as well and would be a fun and easy 8 ep reaction

Jomero

The biggest problem with Season 1 was that Gene Roddenberry had way too much direct involvement with it. And while he may have had a great idea for the core of Trek, he didn't always have the best ideas for episodes..... AND.... he was also a weird pervy horndog. For instance he was adamant that a sex scene with an android happen at one point (and it did in the Naked Now). His ideas weren't always the best, for instance he was also insistent Patrick Stewart wear a hairpiece since his vision of the future meant that they had "cured" baldness (and you can find early shots of Stewart wearing a hairpiece in uniform). Fortunately others were able to convince him that particular idea was a bad one. "Justice" has Roddenberry's fingerprints allllll over it.

Will Sofer

I’m assuming that you’re an American (which seems almost indisputable based on how you framed this), that’s not the reality of the political landscape. There are no communists or true socialists at any level of the state or federal governments. No one is trying to take anything away from you, or seize the means of production. The closest we have are a handful of Democratic Socialists, who are not actually economic socialists, whatsoever. They simply believe that people should be provided with services like healthcare and education…. More than that, you do realize that labor unions, ending child labor, a five-day workweek, collective bargaining, workplace safety standards, sick leave, and other such benefits we all now enjoy were the result of actual socialists, as well as progressives, no?

Chase Lonnergan

It always starts with "but we just need to take care of people's basic needs". That's how it started in Venezuela. They said:"We have the largest and richest oil reserves in South America. We should provide for everybody!". And then, eventually, as it always does, came the death squads and the starvation. It ALWAYS starts with "just a little bit of socialism". Then it goes to hell. And so what if those benefits came from progressives (except for the five-day workweek, that was Henry Ford)? Most of what we know about modern dentistry is derived from the experiments of Josef Mengele, but I am not going to sit here and praise him for my healthy teeth.

robodong

i feel like none of us in this conversation will be able to convert or change the others minds, but one thing we all can agree on is we're all fans of S&G, i mean Chase your name has been in the shoutout for literal years at this point i think. so youre clearly a fan of them, so how about we all just make things easier for S&G and stop talking about personal political opinions. rather than let things get too heated and they have to step in and pick sides. in the past theyve definitely gone out of their way to state to keep political arguments out of this community. we can always do that in literally every other social media platform out there.

PDP1472

Just to correct some gross disinformation. The 5 day work week came from union activity. Ford was just the first major industrialist to see the writing on the wall and adopt them widely.

P S

First season was fine for me as the show was still trying to find its feet, the main difference was that the early shows were made somewhat in the style of TOS, they were a bit more campy so people would feel that nostalgia vibe, and it worked it got people watching and it was renewed, then TNG added all sort of depth and wonders season by season and it just got better and better.

Emptysea93

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it, but I may know what the problem is. I have paramount plus as well, and sometimes if it is acting up, it will skip ahead a second or two while you are watching. It is often barely noticeable unless they cut off a sentence. I think that happened here. When I watched this morning the recording skipped a line about the planet Parliament, but when you re-uploaded it, the line was back. It’s the same reason the subtitles will get unsynced, because they too begin to skip ahead on the same episodes. It doesn’t happen with every episode on Paramount+ but it doesn’t happen every 4-5 episodes for me. But if you rewatch or rewind the episode the skips usually are gone. I do not know if there is a consistent way to stop this from happening or if there is something specific that causes it, but I am wondering if that is your issue.

SbE

The legends of old Terra will tell of the time the Simone of Cinebinge got the intro timing right in S01E14.

s0rd3z

I am pretty sure it's a paramount+ issue. I am not sure if it "resyncs" itself as it buffers or what it does but that app has always given me frequent issues when I have used it in the past.

Geoff Richards

Thanks for the syncing heroics George, it worked great.

Michael Bauer

In the discussion on the episode "Justice", George brings up interesting points with respect to how our conceptions and feelings about morality are to some extent dependent on our biological circumstances - and of course the necessities of our lives. First - I love how Trek inspires these discussions about ethics... it was a big inspiration for me in becoming interested and eventually graduating in philosophy. George is of course correct that these things have an influence, and with the point about a species biologically necessitating the consumption of live prey he basically states the well-known precept in ethics and metaethics that "ought implies can" - no moral duty can exist without a general possibility to fulfil it. But still - I think Simone is right as well. There is no a priori reason why being the same biological species as us or not would make a difference in ethical principles - just *perceptions* and cultural embeddings of ethical principles. And of course customs and laws go way beyond basic basic ethics. There have been and are in any case very different cultures on earth which exert normative pressures and have vastly different ethics, yet we do not succumb to complete moral relativism. Complete moral relativism is definitely not the only viable theory, not even in a universe as diverse as Trek. Obviously the etiology of value-systems is often to a large extent dependent on historical circumstance - but most of the arguments of Aristotle, Kant, or Rawls/Scanlon apply also in a universe as vast and diverse as Star Trek's. The fact that not everyone under all circumstances would or can act to perfectly align with some moral value does not negate the value - nor does the fact that evolution can create situations where aligning actions with certain values is nigh impossible - and nothing prevents meta-ethical theories where moral goods entail different duties in different situations. This isn't the place for an entire essay - but to use a simplistic example: The value of sapient life can be recognized also by a species who evolved to eat live prey. Alternatives might be sought and found to meet the chemical / nutritional needs from non-sapient life, or replicated material. Intentionally causing suffering to sentient beings can constitute moral harm even in worlds where there are obligate carnivores. It is of course still true that we cannot measure everything with the same yardstick across the galaxy in Star Trek (and that is also a point this show makes) - but more importantly, it makes the very Kantian point that all sentient life is valuable, and all sapient life has commonalities which permits it to recognize that value - and the value of both its commonalities and differences with other sapient life.

Andrew Hussey

The shirt thing is totally the Picard maneuver, and if you watch you'll also see frequent use of the Riker maneuver, where he'll approach a chair and rather than just sitting down he'll throw his leg up and over the backrest and sit lol.

Drew Acheson

I mentioned this on the YT video but posting here just in case. The sync issue is still present in the Patron YT video, the background video is out of sync with your reaction. I'm happy to watch the no sync version, but just so it's said.

Drew Acheson

Have you guys seen the YT edit of the opening credits for this show where they make the theme music sound like it's coming from a speak on the Enterprise? It's pretty great.

Flerb

Speaking of working in kitchens, y'all should add "The Bear" to your potential TV show list

Cory Garron

Not sure if this is helpful, but I just finished episode 6, and I noticed the timer in your video went over (at least) 51 minutes, which is weird considering the entire episode is only 45 minutes (and that includes end credits). I wonder if this is somehow related to the sync issues?

Simone's Coconut Squire

You may have caught that Daimon is a Ferengi Rank. What you may not have known was that Daimon Bok first had to pass though the rank of Choy :P

KnittingHaven

I think it's also canon that it's safest to beam from one transporter pad to another, a little less safe to beam from a transporter pad to anywhere, and then least safe to beam from one random place to another. It doesn't really matter that much because transporters are pretty safe at this point, but that's what I read once to explain why they tend to use the transporter pad/room if they can.

Pendergasted

I think i remember an old Seinfeld episode that the whole thing was about everyone loving the frozen yogurt because they thought it was healthy and come to find out just the opposite.

Simone's Coconut Squire

I think the Ferengi were supposed to be a villain for a "new generation". Whereas TOS Starfleet were more like the Jocks, TNG Starfleet are the Scholars, so while the Klingon matched the old Starfleet brawn for brawn, the Ferengi were supposed to be more intellectual villains that were a threat through their cleverness and schemes, but with them also being single-mindedly devoted to profit, they kind of have a giant weakness that makes them predictable, and I think that's the biggest reason why they never really felt threatening (plus they just seem to get dumber as the series goes on).

Deano 42

And I'm both ... I run 3 fans in my bedroom just to generate an ample background hum to lull my brain into unconsciousness, and I wear my "Magic Hat of Sleeping" which is just a toboggan hat with the edge rolled up and placed over my eyes to block out the ambient light. The fans ... it could be rain, a waterfall, static (never music, I just sing along to that, no sleeping) ... but if I lose power ... BAM! Wide awake.

Deano 42

(Without spoiling anything) The Rite of Ascension (if you know, you know) could be viewed differently based on the perceptions and biases of the viewer, and without a non-interference policy, well, things could get very messy.

Jenny MacRunnel

Oh the kitchen talk--I work in a commercial kitchen. Its at a senior living facility and I've been doing it for 9 years. The place I worked at before this, my boss was the quintessential restaurant boss--SO inappropriate! I'm thankful that the place I work at now has standards, and nothing like that is permitted. But yes, I have gotten completely used to cleaning gross drains under the sink, digging through the garbage disposal when someone throws chicken bones in there or something, cleaning mold off of so many things in our cooler (its not well made AT ALL) and just in general doing so many dishes. We just had our inspection this week, and we passed with flying colors, so YAY us! Honestly, our standards are very high, its the cleanest kitchen I've ever seen, and we work pretty hard to keep it that way.

ScotchBeard78

I'm so extremely excited that Cinebinge is going on this TNG journey... AND dying inside for them to be on Season 3+ already, haha.

Drew Acheson

RE: the plot line of the delegates in episode 7; TNG is full of b-plots. Not all are bangers, but you do get some really good background lore about the universe from most of them.

Stevtrek

It is true that walking a mile burns the same amount of calories as running a mile and some experts say that it actually has more health benefits because it is less time that you are at rest. So your circulatory system is at a higher level of activity for a longer period of time.

robodong

you literally can google the numbers, very easily, to show its not true. it logistically and evolutionarily makes no sense. you feel more tired after running a mile than walking, because you exert more energy and use more muscles. thus burn more calories. if both activities burns the same calories, we would evolve to always run. or are you actually telling me you would feel exactly the same after running 1 mile vs after walking 1 mile. just fundamental laws of thermodynamics....

Andrew Hussey

There's YouTube videos you can find where people have gone through basically the whole series and put together basically every instance of it through the show. It became this thing I noticed where whenever one of them is aiming to convey authority they seem to perform the Picard maneuver almost unconsciously lol

Lintrinsic

Yes, but people started calling the shirt tug thing the Picard Maneuver because it was already a phrase in the show thanks to this episode. My Mum used to speculate it started because the spandex jumpsuits probably squeezed in the crotch when he sat down, but later it seemed more about wrinkles and looking sharp. I've always found it interesting they made such a thing of little character quirks and it made characters feel less like stereotypes, but I always found it far more interesting that Data occasionally borrows quirks when he's in command. I think Data already did one in one of these episodes, leaning on his elbow, raising his hand and clenching his fist gently talking to Counsellor Troi over it as Picard arrived on the bridge. It's an unnecessary motion Data wouldn't normally do but something subtle Picard does frequently. It's a very nuanced aspect of Spiner's performance you can't unsee once you notice it. ....okay I admit it, I spent a lot of time watching Data during my misspent youth.

Lintrinsic

I often think I love Star Trek in spite of Gene Roddenberry. Most of the things I love about it, he didn't want in the show and much of what I've always found cringy or irritating is thanks to his influence.

Are you sure about that? Because I remember watching interviews around and before the show first aired where they talked like they were supposed to be the great menace of TNG. Then after they appeared they were described in articles as "the Jerry Lewis's of space" Armin Shimmerman has shouldered a lot of the blame for the goofiness of the Ferengi in their first appearance, in this episode they were much more of a sinister credible threat but it was too late. I think they pivoted to playing them more for laughs later than you think.

I agree the characters are still settling in but most of the "cheese/camp/farce" aspects of TOS were introduced by others, not Roddenberry and he reportedly hated it. The problem with Roddenberry is he thought emancipation of women began and ended with sexual liberation, bra burning and the Summer of Love. He was fundamentally sexist. As an example according to DC Fontana (in the Center Seat documentaries) he amongst others didn't want Worf as a character, they adamantly refused his inclusion, right up until she wrote Yar taking command of the saucer section. Then they said they didn't want a woman taking command so they demanded she add Worf to do it then pretended including a Klingon was their great idea. The clinging to the TOS format of three male leads and a minor supporting cast was the biggest problem while Roddenberry was in creative control rather than the balance of comedy in episodes. It gradually transitioning to an ensemble cast after he stepped back was a big shift in the dynamic of the show that let characters have more development.

I almost got it this time, I said "Space..." just a millisecond, no, a nanosecond, after Picard I swear 🖖 and almost spilled my drink. I just hesitated I guess because I'm just not comfortable speaking over the great Sir Patrick Stewart. Yeah. But I am having fun with these episodes, I don't remember any of them except that first Q episode, that one stuck with me for some reason, I think I'll understand why later because I don't remember those either. But yeah I agree with Simone that Worf, who became one of my favorite characters, is kind of goofy so far. Also, I was thinking why the future season uniforms are better, it's definitely the padding. They had the shoulder pads here, but they definitely started padding the uniforms, specifically the chest on the male characters, to give them a more puffed out physique later. I could be wrong, just seems so to me 🤷‍♂️ Edit: apparently it wasn't padding but just a looser more comfortable fit for the cast, anyway it looked better too, and why I still have always preferred loose fitting clothing, never worn skinny jeans in my life even when I was skinny, I always thought they were an abomination, and I'm cracking up that a lot of my Gen Z coworkers are wearing the big baggy pants I used to wear at that age, which also don't really look good and can be impractical; ah the cycles of fashion.

"Justice" and its exploration of the Prime Directive was interesting. As I understand it, the Prime Directive prohibits Starfleet officers from interfering with the natural development of lesser societies especially pre-warp drive-capable societies, like Edo. This whole misunderstanding could have been avoided had Picard understood it to mean that as well. Visiting a planet that doesn't have knowledge of space travel is never going to have a good outcome: "Hi, we're extraterrestrials. We're exhausted from invading a nearby planet. Do you mind if we hang out with you for a few days?" Once you've decided it'll be fine, though, it seems like a worse idea to transport a citizen of that society, a society that has yet to reach outer space, into orbit aboard the Enterprise, to point at an inter-dimensional vessel, and ask, "Is that your God? I'm going to take your genuflection and prayer as a Yes." All things considered, what happened wasn't that bad. But I think we can all agree that the real villain of this episode is Lt. Yar. Tasha reviewed Edo's laws and reported to the captain that though quirky in places, they posed no threat to the crew. She later says, "My bad: I never looked at the penalties or penalty—death for every violation. Sorry, Wes. This one's on me." This seems like a serious dereliction of duty.

Frozen yogurt is the quintessential human creation according to The Good Place. "You take something that's great and make it a little bit worse so you can have more of it." Or, you know, you "feel" like it's not as bad for you as icecream because it doesn't taste as good so that justifies having more of it and I guess not saying that out loud is a part of the humanity of it all. Talking of working in a kitchen makes me think of The Bear, maybe a show you all want to watch at some point. I think of it as Ted Lasso in that it's about people working to do the things they love at the highest professional level, and also the complete opposite of Ted Lasso in that everybody tries to scream through their problems instead of going to therapy. And instead of everyone being a millionaire they're all in crushing debt. It sounds like it would be interesting to see Star Trek deal with something like cat-bear people who need to kill and eat lizard people to stay alive, but I think it's largely a solved problem: If you can't adjust to the federation's standards for peaceful living and eat replicator food, you just don't get to play with the adults in the federation. Ah yes, everyone remembers episode 8, or "the one with the uncomfortably Aryan planet." Such goofy times. Me, a blond blue-eyed Swede watching this at 16 was like "I've seen about ten people of color in my entire life but even I can tell this planet is weird." But I don't know, maybe they were trying to be sensitive about who they cast as scantily clad sensuous hedonists after that earlier episode with the planet of Black misogynists? Trying, at least. Science fact: If you're breathing heavily you're burning more calories than usual. Exhaling carbon dioxide is how the body loses carbs. Exercise is good for you! (Screw dieting though.) The prime directive is a sweet concept and I wish the show, and Picard especially, was more consistent about following it. The idea is that the federation understands it is not perfect - that better things are possible. Allowing civilizations to grow in their own way, without imposing your values and technologies on them, even if you just have to watch as they destroy themselves a thousand times, in the hope that the 1001st time they'll find a better way of doing things and teach it to you. But in practice it's basically never more than something to justify not solving "every" problem with photon torpedos, except when they forget to. I like to say fruit flies is the most evolved species of all multicellular life forms. They go through a generation in 6-8 hours, they've lived through so many iterations they've literally streamlined their genes down to six chromosomes for optimal reproduction. Their sperm is longer than their whole body! Since all evolution does is, through the slow process of trial and error by random mutations, finding the form of life that's most fit to survive and pass on its genes within its environment. All bacteria are miles ahead in that contest, of course.

As I remember these episodes, I don't remember them fondly. But, re-watching them with the 2 of you who are seeing them with fresh eyes reminds me how I first received them. On first watch, I remember thinking they were ok with some a bit better than that. As I recall, it was largely the novelty of finally seeing new Trek (in any form) on a weekly basis that helped elevate them. If I really hated it, I would definitely not recorded each episode on VHS -- and manually edited out the commercials on-the-fly. Then, during the week, rewatch each episode multiple times. As Simone commented, it's only in retrospect with future seasons in comparison that I dislike the first couple of seasons.

Early TNG often falls into the trap where writers feel that an A/B plot is almost always necessary. Sometimes the A is the big sci-fi plot and B plot is character driven or vice versa. They grow out of it a bit over time but it was pretty common for this era in TV. It can certainly hurt some episodes as one plot can typically be just a sub standard time filler. I also feel like they were trying to cater to hard sci-fi fans while bringing in the more character story driven audience as well. Which leads to a lot of A/B plot scripts, rewrites and multiple writers.

About the transporter room: I think If you beam to another location it is similar to two beam jumps. first brings you to the transporter and second to the new place. Thats it. Just like it was in TOS just without the materializing step in between.

Watchout4J.Who

and what a way to really hammer home the importance of the prime directive

Maerandir Eldar

Oh man, these discussions really take me back to when TNG was in first run and my friends and I would have very similar talks about the episodes and morality and its universal nature (or lack thereof) sitting in a Waffle House over coffee for HOURS. I can't express how awesome it is to see how timeless the effects of TOS/TNG really are on a cultural level.

PG Modehouse

Yeah, episode 7 was DC Fontana writing. Very flimsy premise, one that would have better suited The Animated Series.

Glad George is enjoying his first watch, notwithstanding his bizarre reluctance to start the show with a Picard catchphrase

Raven Dark

Maybe I'm getting things confused, but I thought Tasha Yar said there was no mention of the death penalty serving as punishment for every crime when she did her research? When she came to Riker and the others later and started to report that whole law to him (starting by saying, "They have some strange laws here, sir") that was after two of the Edo were talking to her about their laws and told her about it. So, when she initially did her research into the planet to make sure the crew would be safe, there was nothing stipulating the way punishment works, but then, through her discussion with the Edo, she discovered the death penalty law, went to report it, but made it there too late, and wasn't able to finish what she'd been about to say.

Raven Dark

Now wouldn't it be neat if she actually did nail it perfectly in ep 14?

Simon Pegged Me

@Raven Dark, that sounds like a fair synopsis, and not too far off from how I remember it, but my point, which I probably shouldn't have put so snakily, is that missing the death penalty is a pretty big and almost tragic error. I stand by that. At the beginning of the episode, after the Away Team returns from first contact, they give the captain their impressions and opinions on the planet and whether it's an appropriate spot for shore leave. When it's her turn, Lt. Yar references her report on the civilization's culture and laws, saying it's "fairly simple, common sense things." I trust your recollection of what happens after that, later in the show. But what Tasha learns later is irrelevant to my point: if you research the laws of a society and miss that there is one penalty, death, for every violation of the law, big or small, you have done a dangerously bad job of investigating the culture's justice system. Outsiders are likely to break some law when visiting an unfamiliar society, and a report without a review of the penalties for crimes to see if they are just contains a potentially disastrous omission. Now, having stubbornly clamped down on my chew toy, I'll concede. My post was a joke at Tasha's expense, and a not particularly good one. She had to miss the existence of the death penalty or there is no episode. The real villains are the writers, not Tasha. I was just making a joke that a security officer would have caught this if missing it weren't so necessary to plot.

overdev

the Ferengi are just silly in TNG but they get really fleshed out with pretty cool characters in Deep Space 9 :)

dys

In the Battle episode, I do appreciate that for all the usual technobabble in the show Data did actually describe pretty accurately how a checksum works.

RSteele

When the ferengi beamed onto the bridge, it was their teleport, as you can tell from the visual effect. It wasn't the enterprise that beamed them onboard.

Joe

Here in the UK I don't think the word "hell" was ever a no no. We don't have the same level of interfering religious nonsense as the US.

I don't think you ever really get used to stress in general. You get somewhat accustomed to specific types of stress, but that's it. So I'm glad George is not emperor of the Earth. School itself gave me enough stress and trauma. ;)

Fedora The Explorar

It is really interesting to see people who take these Season 1 episodes so seriosuly and discuss them so seriously because all these episodes are like a 3/10 and laughably bad for me

RJ aka LEMental

Most people don't know that some of these episodes are recycled scripts from the planned Star Trek II series, which had the original cast reprising their roles.

PoindexterG

I was trying to figure out what that noise was that started at around 52:00, and I realized I was Simone's cat.

DM DC

I am late to this, but the kitchen talk brought to mind the movie "Waiting..." 2005. If you two haven't you should see it on the channel here. The Ferengi transported to the Bridge of the Enterprise from a similar platform. They were beamed by their own transporter.
