I'm not gonna lie, one of the most recent times I watched Thunderball, I thought to myself, "Oh! I get it! In the 1960s this was pron"

By the way, the jet pack in the beginning was real

They did dub over the sound it made, though. They thought it didn't sound 'jetpack-y' enough, so they used the exhaust from a fire extinguisher for the audio.

Is you’re interested in watching a spy thriller that is explicitly an anti-Bond (meaning it reflects the reality of actual espionage and was conceived as a contrast to Bond) try “The Spy Who Came In From the Cold” (1965). It’s based on the novel by John LeCarre who actually worked for the British intelligence service. The film “Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy” (2011) is also based on a LaCarre novel.

This is the 2nd most profitable Bond movie of all time after I believe Skyfall. This is my favorite Bond movie. I'm in my late 60's and this is my favorite Bond movie definitely, and I saw this as a 9 or 10 year old in the movies and it was the greatest thing I ever saw, and no other Bond's come close. Goldfinger is my 2nd best of every Bond movie including the most recent ones. It's difficult I think to impress on young people like yourselves in 2025 how big James Bond was in the 1960's. The Bond, movies set off a giant craze for Secret Agents including a hit song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iaR3WO71j4 ; TV series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQyJnAs7BlU; Mission Impossible, The original Mission: Impossible television series, which premiered in 1966, was inspired by the James Bond films, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPTCOL, even comedies like Get Smart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2ObCoCm61s and, I Spy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXds_DAEiZA; even series lie the Wild, Wild West, his show was conceived by its creator, Michael Garrison, as "James Bond on horseback., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuCuf5tvTqE; and others https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7HCjZg8R7M and kids toys https://toytales.ca/secret-sam-attache-case-from-topper-toys-1965/; bLWxM and kids everywhere in American boys and yes girls two played secret agent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eRpfa04I9c

I’d recommend watching the 1980s remake Never Say Never Again

George & Simone, re: shooting sharks - this must have been before the "no animals were harmed in the making of this movie" was a thing.

Jon Johns

So much music in this movie sounds like Harry Potter! In chamber is secrets there's some music while the kids are creeping around, and it sounds just like the music when Bond is scuba diving when he finds the camouflaged plane...

Peter Dillard

In Nassau there is an underwater area called the Bond wrecks. I did a hotel scuba orientation and for the dive we went to that area. Saw a car on the bottom but was told the airplane for Thunderball was too deep.

Darren Harrison

The problem I have with the reaction is that they treat the jetpack as an outlandish gadget. In fact, the jetpack is a real thing and was developed for the U.S. military. The operator refused to fly it without a helmet, so Connery had to shown putting one on. There were no wires or special effects involved in the flight. The only unreal part was Bond holding it afterwards. In reality the jetpack would be too hot to pick up with ones bare hands following the flight.

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

A little late (just started watching the Bond reactions) but this is the first Bond film to use the starring actor in the gun barrel sequence. 😁

Late to the party but... There is a workplace bully at my work, or maybe he is just an asshole: He doesn't really target anyone in particular as far as I can tell but he absolutely has elbows out type of social interactions making him generally unpleasant to deal with. I just try avoiding him as much as possible. Whenever I hear that he starts going down a rabbit hole with his "less admirable" rhetoric I just leave because I unfortunately am the kind of person who simply can not simply shut up when I hear that type of BS. I simply can not let it just sit there unopposed, when I know that it's wrong...but with this particular guy... It's just a 'nope, I am leaving' because he gets so aggressive and personal in trying to defend his rhetoric and he'll keep it for the rest of the week.
