Hi Mark, are you referring to Patreon page or Cinebingers.ca? on Patroen there are the collections tab that lists all TV shows in their own little groups, and on our website there is a drop down menu at the top for all tv series, functioning the same way.

I may have been the person who asked, and if so, what I had asked was, on the website, when scrolling the complete database, if it could be updated so that there would, for example, be only one entry for "Star Trek: The Original Series" that you would click on to see all the videos rather than having all of them in there. I understand that just clicking "movies" does the same thing but I guess for many people it would still feel "cleaner" than having several pages of a given show.

On cinebingers.. My issue isn’t so much that I want to find the tv shows.. That is fairly straightforward and functional.. It’s that I want the option to see only movies in the list if possible.. Cut down on the page number and clutter if possible.. Could you maybe add a dropdown menu with All, Movies, Tv Shows?

Hi Mark, under the movie genre filter, one of the options is "Only Display Movies". To display only TV shows, you can switch the account tier filter to "Cinephile" which functions as display tv shows only.

Hi Tyler Foster, i am not quite sure i understand your suggestion. On our site, under the tv series drop down menu there is only one entry for Star Trek TOS or other shows like you said, and when you choose them it would all the videos related to that choice.

Hi Jonathan, unfortunately that is not the case. Those old videos were fully taken down a while back not by our choice, and the take down was so sudden and overnight that we didnt have any backups. So those episodes and other older videos are fully irrecoverably gone. It is not a matter of whether we're choosing to post them or not, its that they simply no longer exist anywhere.

It's true that what I'm talking about is solved by "only display movies" so it's a pretty minor issue, but it still seems like it would be cleaner for both the "show everything" option and the TV option to only have one entry per show that you would click into to see all the individual videos. But that's just my two cents, probably because I like to flick through all 47 pages to remind myself of everything you have before I pick something and it's mildly annoying to have multiple pages of BB/BCS and Trek.

(which was achieved by searching 101, since every show has an episode 101).

I love the new format. It solves one of my major gripes with reaction sites, which is how difficult it can be to find a specific reaction. Excellent work recognizing that and addressing it. More James Bond would be my wishlist, and hopefully a reaction to "You Only Live Twice" (1967), in which you will notice where Austin Powers got a lot of its inspiration.

Hi BH, im not seeing any restriction records in our access logs for Chernobyl recently, could you tell me more what the message you received says? or better yet take a screen shot of it? Lastly, just to rule out possible causes, could you let me know what device you were using, and also please double check if the browser you are using to access the video is signed into the correct Patreon account.

So I ended up fixing the issue by going directly through my phone browser to your website and navigating to Chernobyl from there, instead of clicking on the hyperlink in your collections on the Patreon app. When I tried going through the app, a black screen would pop up with this message: “The content you are trying to access requires a different level of Patreon tier subscription, please check if you have the correct tier or if you are logged in with the correct Patreon account on this browser.” I am on iPhone 12. I have a screenshot but I’m not seeing an option to post images on here.

If not, could you press the "Reload Verification" button and try to access the content again? Good news everyone! The site is fully back up. if you are still getting 404 or any site loading error messages, clearing cache will fix it. OR, you can wait an hour and the cache will automatically clear itself. this is due to part of the fix being a DNS reset, which requires a cache clear either manually right away or automatically after some time. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

watch Lost! Its one of the greatest Sci fi/Mystery shows of recent memory and it definitely walked so shows like Stranger Things and Fringe could run. If you like a bunch of random stuff happening to people on a lost island, with a great soundtrack by Michael Giacchino (Up, The Incredibles, among other things) then you'll love Lost. It's one my favorite shows of all time.

Two things can be true. JJ Abrams was involved with both shows and there are references/easter eggs to Lost in Fringe. I do agree the format follows closer to X-Files though, its more plot driven whereas Lost was mostly character based.

It's going to take them years to get through all the Star Trek shows. I think it'd be worth doing B5 side by side with DS9 to compare their similarities - including clunky first seasons.

Man, I am always torn about B5 and jms generally. He has such good stories, but his nuts and bolts writing is just terrible. "Jeremiah" had the same problem. I just keep watching them because I *have* to know what happens next, but sit there thinking "why am I watching this trash" the whole time. The scene with Sinclair and his sorta girlfriend in Season 1 has to be the worst written thing I have ever seen on TV. B5 really improved the last two seasons when jms had a room and wasn't actually writing every episode.

This Patreon is fantastic. The only thing I'd recommend is a way to adjust separate volume levels (movie vs your reaction). I'm assuming that this would be very difficult. I only bring it up because there are times where the movie feels very quiet. But also I'd like to turn you guys up as well. It's a losing battle, lol.

Why is cinebingers.ca suddenly asking for *way* more data than it was before? It wants my identity including email, and even my unrelated Patreon pledges including status, amount and history. Sorry, that's not happening. I upgraded my tier because I liked what you were doing here, but I'm not prepared for this degree of change, so I'm genuinely disappointed to say that going to downgrade back to the lower tier and stick with Youtube edits.

This is the prompt I see. I wish I could remember the specific language before (it's been a few days, maybe a week since I last watched context on cinebingers.ca) but it was far more innocuous than this. If you didn't change anything on your end, then perhaps the change was with Patreon. In fact, perhaps the change was just clarifying the degree of data access creators always had with such an integration, but until now users just weren't properly informed? Actually come to think of it, I hadn't needed to click the Allow button in a few weeks. When you first launched I noticed I had to allow on every video. At some point that stopped, and I hadn't been reprompted until today, with the aforementioned language.

Oh I see. So the website uses your Patreon account as an authentication in order to know if you have the correct tier to access. The site itself doesn't collect those information it just does a verification check on its own as those are the data that Patreon provides. Patreon must have updated the clarification as the authentication procedure hasn't changed for a long time. Regardless, anything our website use to check authentication is exactly what Patreon allows us the channel host sees on here as well, your subscription tier (by that extension sub amount), email associated with your account, user name (it assumes it's your real name), and history with the channel incase you have remaining subscription days but are not actively subbed. The other info listed is a general catch all of "may include" so the responsibility becomes ours rather than patrepns, like a pill and all its "may include side effects". Because Patreon can be used to connect to other third party apps or more sophiscated sites where more info is needed, like direct integration with other apps where more info is required. But for our site they are not.

Correct. Initially the permission ask was on every video until we created the front page to remember that verification (unless you clear cache and cookies). But since then we've had a few bugs and site brown outs here and there that required flushing all cache, thus requiring all users to recheck again. But what is being checked and asked for has never changed, what changed is the written test provided by Patreon it seems.

Thanks for clarifying this. I think the most surprising thing to me was the statement that it could see pledges, amount and history. The plural in pledges implies this enables visibility into subscriptions I have to other creators which is pretty egregious IMO. Of course I would expect you to be able to see my pledge and history to you, as the creator, but not to other creators. I interpreted this as my memberships were either included as claims in the OAuth id token you receive from Patreon, or else you were able to query that via the OIDC userinfo API. (Maybe that's still true even if you don't have visibility into that information from the platform itself.) But thanks for clarifying that you didn't make any changes on your end -- clearly these are Patreon changes and this points me in the right direction to look into it further.

No problem, and no creator can ever check the subscriptions you have to another creator as to do so would require that creator to give us their secret creator token. Something no creator would ever share, since that would give us access to their creator page.

Been trawling Patreon's API docs, a delightful way to spend a Friday evening. :) I see Cinebingers is requesting these OAuth scopes: identity, identity[email], identity.memberships. The identity.memberships scope is the problematic one and it DOES let you see users' subscriptions to other creators. The docs for /api/oauth2/v2/identity says "If you request memberships and DON’T have the identity.memberships scope, you will receive data about the user’s membership to your campaign. If you DO have the scope, you will receive data about all of the user’s memberships, to all the campaigns they’re members of." So Patreon's permissions request wording is accurate here, and AFAICT this scope is overly permissive. For that matter, so is identity[email] if all you want to do is confirm whether the user is at a sufficient tier. You just need the identity scope for this.

Hi Jason. After looking into it some where, what we request from Patreon: identity[email] , identity[full_name] , identity[image_url] identity.memberships Is all that's available to request. The full name is what you set as your account name not your billing info name, that is what gets displayed on the top right of the front page next to your current subscription tier. For membership request, there is no additional filter or a more granular request available from patreon. That is all we request both as a verification for tier access and as a display for the user so you are aware. It may include all membership as the document states but we don't store, look at, or care what other memberships you may have. The verification check is all we need.

The point you make at the end George about shifting between plot A and B feels jarring, and how House did it really well. Well... Gene Roddenberry had a rule that there would be NO inter-personal conflicts on TNG, and in the first season especially was very controlling over scripts. So the reason it's so jarring is because in House Jenice would have interjected something in the time conversaion, like "you have a habit of not showing up...", like a dig or something. Gene didn't want any of that, so we get this instead. His influence fades more over the next few seasons, and I'm looking forward to your reactions to PRIME TNG.

I appreciate the reply! I think we might be talking about different things, because identity[full_name] and identity[image_url] aren't OAuth scopes. At least, they aren't documented OAuth scopes. I'm not sure if I can paste links here, but what I'm talking about is in the "APIv2: OAuth" section and "Scopes" subsection from docs.patreon.com, whereas I think you are talking about identity API fields. When I use the browser dev tools, I see cinebingers.ca redirecting to patreon.com/oauth2/authorize and it's requesting the identity, identity[email], and identity.memberships OAuth scopes (this is the "scopes" query parameter). The requested scopes will dictate the permission request language that Patreon presents to users (like the one about having access to all pledges), and ultimately the amount of information about the user you have access to. After the standard OAuth dance (browser redirect back to your site and you exchange the auth code for an OAuth access token), I assume you then use the access token to authenticate to the /api/oauth2/v2/identity API. When you're saying for example "identity[full_name]" I think you aren't referring to an OAuth scope (which either isn't a thing or at least isn't documented) but probably the fields you're requesting from that identity API. This is different than what I'm talking about, which is the OAuth scopes and is part of the authentication flow that precedes you calling Patreon's identity API. What I'm ultimately saying is, based on what Patreon's docs are saying at least, you don't actually need to request the identity.memberships scope when you are doing the initial OAuth flow. You'll get an access token without that scope but you'd still request the identity scope, so you can use it to call the /api/oauth2/v2/identity API, and you can still request memberships as a field for this API. It's just that now what you'll get back for memberships is just the user's subscription information to you, rather than all their unrelated pledges to other creators. This is because the identity API docs say "if you request memberships and DON’T have the identity.memberships scope, you will receive data about the user’s membership to your campaign. If you DO have the scope, you will receive data about all of the user’s memberships, to all the campaigns they’re members of."

Hi Jason thanks for the info! So initially when we were first building the site, oauth as you described was exactly what we did but it never worked as described. Thus our extra request for identification and membership. We've given another try now and it seems like things have been updated on Patreon side, likely coinside with the warning update. We'll be working on updating the authentication request scopes.

Interesting! I checked archive.org and pulled up a snapshot of docs.patreon.com from April 2024 and it has the same language, but the previous bullet for the identity API docs (not the one I quoted earlier but part of the same section) incorrectly cites an "identity[memberships]" scope (instead of "identity.memberships"), which is a documentation bug which has since been fixed (because the OAuth section of the same April 2024 snapshot says it's identity.memberships). That's probably a red herring, but if nothing else it indicates Patreon's own documentation was confused (and therefore confusing). Possibly the API behavior was wrong (relative to the documentation) and they recently fixed it and updated their permissions language, as you suggested. Possibly the API was working properly the whole time and you ran into an unrelated issue during development and incorrectly attributed it to the identity.memberships scope, and Patreon just incidentally happened to update their permission request language recently. It's also possible nothing changed at all over the past year with Patreon and I only just happened to notice the plural "pledges" language only last week because I ate my Wheaties that morning. Anyway, whatever the reason, I'm happy you guys are able to make it work without the identity.memberships scope now and you're working on an update. That's great news! Thanks for your patience and willingness to cater to your privacy-paranoid patrons. :)

I just wanted to mention that The Iron Giant, the sound of the movie is very low, I had to max out the volume to watch it but then when you guys talk you blew my eardrums lol... I've noticed this on a couple movies so far... You might want to verify the volume of the movie when you make the videos.

Through our investigation and that of our patrons over in the community chat, we've learned that this issue is cause by your patreon account not being fully verified. Likely from Patreon not sending out a proper verification when your account was made. The solution to this is to change your accounts email address to a new one, thus forcing Patreon to send out a new email verification link. Click on that link, verify your Patreon account and the issue will be resolved.

Thank You for making this, I had another patreon I subscribed to that started their own website and it was a nightmare lol. The interface wasn't that bad but with no idea how to navigate the page and how they had it set up it became a big turnoff for me and almost felt intentional for some odd reason. Hi Florian, when you get the restricted access message, does the message end with an email? Indicating which account/email address you are logged in with? If so please make sure you are using the correct account. If the message is without an email address, it likely then is due to any vpn or plugins/extensions your browser may have that's blocking the site. If that's the case, disabling those would help. You can also narrow down which the cause is by trying to access the site with another browser or another device.

I think I've found the mistake. The display of the tiers on Patreon isn't optimal, in my opinion, so I didn't realise that you apparently need a higher tier to watch films. It works for TV shows. So now I have to decide whether to upgrade or not (I'd love to treat you guys to it – but I'm still thinking about it, because with all my other subscriptions, it's starting to add up 😄) Keep up the amazing work – you two are very likeable and create great content. hi emmanuel, yeah sadly whatever changes Patreon made on their end with the account verification statuses seems to have broken a few user accounts. the best solutions found so far is to change your email address in your patreon account, which will force patreon to send a new verification email link to the account. alternatively, send a support request to Patreon and asking for them to look into your accounts verification status, explaining that even though you are verified, you are still flagged as otherwise.

Trying to work out how I feel about "Loud as a Whisper". There are some parts that really worked: learning and developing sign as a framework for understanding each other, the decision to kill off the chorus. The premise could have made this a great episode. But I agree with Simone and George that Riva is really unlikable. And honestly? it's the hair. He has 80s Movie Dickhead Hair. Two Wish-List items: 1. For films that have multiple sequels it would be great to include the Cardinal Number in brackets at the end of the title (unless it’s possible to add an attribute for “releaseCardinal” and concatenate that to the title in the grid). Think of Bourne, Die Hard and especially Bond! 2. Take the Random Movie Reaction button and enhance it to randomly display One Each for every Movie Genre. I think you would first Randomize the Genres, then as they are chosen check that it wasn’t already picked for another Genre looping until there are no dupes. Aside: because of prequels you might also choose to have an attribute for timelineCardinal as well FWIW: $0.02
