So many things about Hellraiser, but I think the thing about this franchise is that they launched the "... In Space" trope. If you are wanting to watch more, I would definitely stop at "in Space"(4th one), but the last one that was made for Hulu is really good. There are like 7 or 8 direct to video sequels that range from just terrible, to "I bet this was a good script that they put a Hellraiser skin on to get it made."

About the sprays: Mostly you do it when the place is under maintenance and someone else has allready enabled access by setting up scaffolding or something. You do it when they are nearly done, aim for the last night, so they dont have the time to remove it because they have to take the scaffolding done. And sometimes people just climb because they are willing to take risks that you would consider unreasonable. You find complicated grafitty in long tunnels where there is hardly any room to avoid the trains, so people risk theire lifes creating them

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Shout out to the Marquis de Sade & George Bataille, they’d have welcomed the Cenobites with open arms.

overdev

been a long time since I have saw that movie, damn those practical effects are great especially for a low budget movie, 1 milion was the budget of it a tenth of The Things budget. sure they only had one house as a set (more or less) but its sooo well made

Onikaze

take note of the actor who plays the dad. You will see him in star trek...eventually :)

Gollum the Ottoman

For George's knowledge, a Clive Barker's Hellraiser video game was recently announced.

PunchNJewelee

My favorite sleep talking story i have is when my partner let out a long dramatic sigh and said "mmmm tits" and i have never heard him sound so happy 😂...I also wanted to recommend the movie Quills, its about the Marquis de Sade. Idk if its exactly channel material but thought George might be interested.

I would say 2 is definitely worth watching as it's a continuation. Beyond that point it almost gets worse by each release and beyond 4 there's not much value in my opinion

Hellraiser is a great, classic horror movie. It's one of the best horror movies of the 1980's. So much about it is great. The effects, the music, and especially the story. Hellraiser is probably one of the most original ideas for a horror story ever conceived. I like that in the first couple of Hellraiser movies, the Cenobites aren't necessarily the villains. At least not the main villains anyway. They're just beings who keep exploring deeper and deeper into sensations of hedonistic pleasure but are no longer able to distinguish between pain or pleasure. I also love the implication that the only people who would seek the puzzle box out are people who can't get any pleasure or satisfaction out of life. Like Frank, who is a psychopathic, hedonistic scumbag who uses people but still doesn't feel satisfied. Hellraiser is such a wild ride. Great reaction as usual.🙂

Jeb Manning

I also remember a funny story about the title of the movie. The book the movie is based on is called The Hellbound Heart, but executives thought it sounded too much like the title of a romance novel. Before they settled on Hellraiser, an old woman working on the set suggested calling the movie "What a Woman Will Do for a Good Fuck."

Jeb Manning

I've gotta recommend following this up with Hellbound: Hellraiser II. It continues the story of Kirsty Cotton from the first movie, who is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. However, the head doctor starts playing with the Lament Configuration and unleashes the Cenobites again. It's really cool because it explores the lore of the Cenobites and how they came to exist. I think it's one of the all time great horror sequels and definitely worth a watch.

Emptysea93

A cenobite in religious terms is a type of ascetic who practices self isolation and self mortification, historical cenobites were a common type of Catholic monk during the dark ages up to the renaissance. The cenobites of Hellraiser take their name from the historical ones because they too practice self mortification and torture but treat it like a sacred or religious act.

Chase Lonnergan

The idea of The Cenobites being the villains of the franchise is honestly what killed it in the long run. Subsequent filmmakers turned them into more traditional "monsters" and inherently "evil", and completely forgot that HUMANS are the villains, and The Cenobites are merely a means to an end.

Pam Nail

I think the 2022 movie (requel?) is pretty great as well.

Pam Nail

Hellraiser II is definitely worth a watch if you liked this, and I really like the 2022 reboot. The only other sequel I've seen is 3, which is entertaining in its own way, but a step down for sure.

Actuarial Lurker

This movie made me almost vomit several times...

Wormtongue

Hellraiser 2 is even better imo. And incase you have been told yet. Clive Barker is the author who wrote the story (The Forbidden) that Candyman is based on.

Daniel Smith

I watched this film when I was far too young and I felt physically ill for hours afterwards.

nossieboy

Forth one had a great story.

Andrew

Simone did not recognize the prominent Star Trek actor.

JoeNotCharles

Disagree - Hellraiser 2 was pretty good, had some memorable things of its own, but nowhere near in the same league as the first one. (Haven't seen any of the others because I've heard they were bad.)

JoeNotCharles

Huh, apparently I'm in the minority for thinking #2 was a step downward.

Aaron Stinson

At least watch Hellraiser 2. Everything after that is only for the most die hard fans.

Robert Cooper

Weird. I don't know anyone that doesn't like the Hulu one. I think Judgement would be better if it wasn't a "Hellraiser" movie. It's a perfectly serviceable script and not poorly made, but it either craps all over the lore, or doesn't understand it in the first place, depending on who you ask.

UnSafeStu

OMG. I get curious about horror lore and start reading about all the other films to see how they fit. Just discovered Henry Cavill stars in Hellraiser: Hellworld in 2005. I guess we're watching them all the way to this one then

Critical87

This is one of my favorite horror movies, I love the atmosphere and the musical scores.

WastedPo

I hope you continue on with these. Two is basically equal in quality to the first movie. And I personally do like 3, even though it is kind of disconnected from the other two. ... I can't really vouch for the endless parade of sequels after #3 though.

parker469a

Garak, yeah, I was wondering if she'd ever notice that voice.

parker469a

After you watch Hellraiser 2, you could watch "The Philosophy of Hellraiser" by Morbid Zoo on youtube. She discusses the themes underpinning the movies. I've watched that video many times and the part you might enjoy even more than that is her cat starts biting her relentlessly which is pretty hilarious given the topic at hand.

HeyHeyJK

George, you’re a genius. “Jump Scare Jesus” is now my official new band name. Now I just have to form a band.

YourBigBut

The Judgey Nuns could be the opening band

JH

Lol and ironically Another ST actor plays in one of the sequels… 😉

JH

Oh just to follow up on Simone’s observation where Franks voice doesn’t match his face: the actor who plays Frank, Sean Chapman actually did have his voice dubbed over with voice actor Bob Sessions, in this and the second film.

Wally

Another written and directed by Clive Barker is "Nightbreed," an underrated horror classic.

Senec

I decided to rewatch this tonight, and Frank's voice has always annoyed me. Simone pointed it out that his voice doesnt seem to match him, and thats absolutely the issue with it. Its the acoustics of his voice vs the actors he interacts with. Anyone else's voice resonates off of the surfaces in the scene to give a slight echo, muting, etc. Frank sounds like hes been dubbed over in a studio, and it turns out thats exactly what happened. The original actors for Frank (skinned and skinless Frank are each played by different actors) spoke with British accents. They recorded yet another actor doing an American accent to replace his voice in post.

Regarding Wendigo, George said they aren't real; well, they technically are. In the original legend, they aren't monsters. They are people who eat human flesh and thus get 'cursed.' In fact, there is a disorder called Wendigo Psychosis, where a person believes wholeheartedly that because they ate human flesh, they are cursed and *will become a Wendigo*, so much that they do start acting like a wild animal to fulfil the curse. Wendigos aren't monsters; they are crazy cannibals and have existed in the past, in a sense. There was a case in Canada where a native was arrested because he was the local Wendigo killer. People who believed they were turning into a Wendigo would ask him to kill them, and he would. The tribe had no idea they were under Canadian law, so they didn't hide anything when questioned. The man was arrested and died in prison.
