Regarding your remarks at the start - this is very much a thing in Europe, especially the southern part. I have myself said something similar about my own people in a negative connotation (I am Bulgarian), so I can imagine someone of Italian origin doing the same.

RoboNex666

He didn't say these, George LOL. He was talking about how "regular" Americans were profiting from and enjoying Italian cuisine while Italian Americans got nothing from it.

Potsi

Highlight of the week! gabagool

GF

Cacciatore means hunters in Italian; her friend's name is Hunter, so it's just Carmela's nickname for her. (I think George called it a couple minutes later.)

PastaDon

Was just about to comment this, you beat me to it.. lol First part of the word even sounds like "catch" in english terms..

newhastings

The “Giuliani” Livia was referring to is Rudy Giuliani, the at-the-time mayor of NYC (you would remember him from almost whipping his dick out in Borat 2)

Ste Rawlings

He said, "The fucking Italian people, how did we miss out on this", not "These Italians". And then he said, "These fucks had nothing before we gave them the gift of our cuisine" The fucks in question being Americans.

Jpsynergy

He also didn't think the Starbucks-like coffee chain was actually Italian and wouldn't be saying "these Italians" but then it's just a silly little set of scenes lol

FWPJR.

It’s finally Sopranos Tuesday again, I can’t wait to watch this reaction.

Erik D

Sidenote: the actress is also David Chase's daughter.

Erik D

Tony Tuesday!

Angela D. Mitchell

I haven't rewatched this in years, so this is so much fun. It's still as brilliant as I remember. And so subtle and such a slow burn to start. Also, the opening credits are such a part of the experience for me that I play the opening credits on my copy then stop once the episode starts. I can't do the Sopranos without the song! George, Paulie is "othering" the Starbucks people on purpose, like HIS people are the real Italians who got gipped. I 100% think the other kids thought Anthony Jr. went to his dad to scare the other kid off. That's why they openly rolled their eyes at him when he tried to take "credit" for being the toughest. Speaking of which, how stupid are these people who talk back or even attack these guys? It's the fricking Mob. If it's me? I'm "yes sir" and "no sirring" everyone then getting out of there ASAP. I'm amazed at how many people put their lives in their hands for their pride here with Tony, Christopher, Paulie, etc. It's also interesting -- and not a coincidence -- how stupid and/or ignorant so many of these guys are portrayed as being. Basic emotion, food, family, violence -- is all they understand. John Heard played the cop, and my understanding is he had some BIG real-life issues as well, so wonder if that bled into the show here. He was a talented actor but reportedly not such a great guy IRL. For those interested in a deep dive into the show -- critics Matt Zoller Seitz and Alan Sepinwall wrote a fantastic critical exploration of the show that also included in-depth interviews with David Chase called "The Sopranos Sessions." Totally worth a read after y'all finish the show. Last but not least, as a fellow fan of "You've Got Mail," I always get a kick out of how delighted Simone is by a reminder (like the Godfather -- "Go to the mattresses!").

crazydave

That cop is Kevin McCallisters dad

Eversharpe

Most people with boomer or gen x parents will be on the fahrenheit scale for health care because that's what the parents grew up with. Canada only transitioned to metric during the 70s and 80s but it was never really completed because a Conservative government came to power and paused the efforts.

Tom B

George says he wouldn’t walk into a restaurant and say “these Chinese” but he isn’t Paulie who was born in America and still thinks he’s the most true Italian out there lol

Fudgey

I was 18 when I had my first thought of the very real fact that I was one day going to die and it gave me my first panic attack <3

maikeru

weird that I never think of him being in home alone when I see him in other stuff, I for some reason always think about the film 187, where he played a teacher.

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

Not being able to use the sopranos theme song getting you down? Well have I got the alternative for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykqPZ4zdLyk Now it has the same music, but the lyrics are different. And if I know the law as well as I think I do, if you ever do get DMCA'd for it, an judge will be like "You know? that song is pretty funny, I'll definitely let it slide" because that's how the law totally works, right? XD

DCray

To piggyback off others... Paulie didn't say THESE! He said: "Fuckin Italian people, how did we miss out on this shit."

Charles

If you guys like Sil (Steven Van Zandt), another show he is in that is mob related but more a comedy is Lilyhammer on Netflix. I doubt it would win a poll though, I have never met very many people that watched it. Still a pretty good show though

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Tony playing Mario kart with one hand was a subtle show of skill and that this isn't the first time he's played with his kids. Mario Kart on the 64 could be played one handed with the right stick but it was hard and legit no casual player would even know you could do it at the time. If I remember right it wasn't intentional though, James just picked it up like that and the director didn't correct him. I think they mention it in the commentary or maybe an interview.

Jordan Hume

There was a dirt road that had virtually no traffic and kids from my high school would use it for fights. So yeah, that stuff does happen.

Cinebinge

bonkers! I didn't know you could do that

Adam Vialpando

I love how everyone who watches this show already can tell that Brendan will be whacked after his introduction.

Dylan Thomas

I laughed at the speculation over the name meadowlands just a wetland area in Ny and Nj

Roddrick Smith

I don’t think he said “these”. I think he said “fucking Italian people. How did we miss out on this?” Inferring he was disappointed in his own people letting corporate America get to money they should have been getting first. At least in the scene I’m thinking of.

Adam Vialpando

The thing with Artie and Tony is that one of the reasons they are able to remain good friends is because Artie is removed from the life. If Artie became partners with Tony it would change their entire dynamic. Lots of people think working with friends is automatically a good idea but a lot of the time it can backfire badly. Having to keep the friendship out of the way of business has the potential to damage friendships, and that's just with people who aren't in the mob.

soup3097

can't wait for ep 5. absolute classic!

SANAMDEEP

i fuckin KNEW before clicking the link that it'd be the dunkey version LMAO

SANAMDEEP

i mean i learnt about the fact i was gonna die at like 8 years old but it never bothered me because since i learned about it from my parents they framed it in a way in which it never scared me, so i guess i'm lucky in that regard

mpd

Tony's breathing is a major character in the show, believe it or not this is still the larval stage, it hasn't assumed it's final form yet

Relic

There were jokes, or maybe they weren't jokes, about Jimmy Hoffa being buried in the endzone. "Quasimodo predicted all this"

Relic

OK. Maybe you can't hear it, but if you want to know more about "Woke Up This Morning," where it came from, how it became The Sopranos theme, check the link... You might be surprised. SPOILER ALERT Don't watch before or after the excerpt unless you have seen the entire series. https://youtu.be/s4gK67BJYVE?t=2155 It's part of a YouTube podcast, "Talking Sopranos," that Michael Imperioli (Christopher) and Steve Schirripa (Bobby Bacala starting in season 2) put out during Covid. They go through every episode of the show, behind the scenes stuff, funny stories, with guest interviews of all the major characters. If you're a Sopranos junkie it's worth a peek.

Collinson

About the kids fighting I think you're actually both right. From my memory of school you'd have the group that knew the two children involved who would know all the gossip and rumours about the parents then you have the second group who knew nothing about the two kids fighting but they just wanted to watch a fight.

Mikey Sea

Poor Paulie. How much more betrayal can he take?

JBK405

I think the final shot with AJ is meant to show that -- regardless of whether AJ thinks it's cool or not -- it's a complete SHATTERING of his mental image of who his father was. He might grow to think it's awesome, or he might hate it, but either way their relationship will never be the same. It's like when you first realize a parent is fallible, or that they can die, or that their marriage might not last forever. It's a shock to the foundation of your world. I honestly can't recall when I first realized I was going to die. I have no memory of an existential crisis, so maybe it wasn't a big deal for me. Or maybe it was so big I blocked out the memory.

Matrim

He didn’t say “these Italians” he said “Fucking Italian people (referring to his people), how did we miss out on this?” Expressing exasperation in that while his people invented things like espresso they failed to capitalize on it to his satisfaction.

Cinebinge

that intro song is hilarious! also baron!! what is with the new profile! 😅😅😅

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

I may have gotten the urge to take a screenshot from your reaction to Big Fish and photoshopped Steve Buscemi's eyes on the both of you while I watched it. 😬😬😬LOL

james repka

In 2003 television adaptation of the movie Fargo was produced. A pilot was aired but not picked up as a series, starring Edie Falco as the (still pregnant) Marge Gunderson.

Mikey Sea

I think Simone was partially right about dissing the friendship with Carmella, but I think Charmaine was really leveling the playing field with her; after the "come here, servant" hand motion. I was glad George had a laugh at the 'Chinese godfather' joke. 😁 The racial humor in this show reminds me of Family Guy, and I grew up in a different time (way before) when people gave each other shit. This show has a lot of that. You'll know the difference because when it's absurd, it's funny, and when it's not, it feels a bit malicious. This is truly one of those shows like Breaking Bad that just gets better with each season.

beefjerkywizard

"They don't serve hot dogs here" is the peak!

beefjerkywizard

As a fellow Canadian, Simone it's messed you use Fahrenheit for temp

p0sthum4n

I'll never forget where I wuz this day.

Green Nolan

If Uncle junior (Dominic Chianese) feels threatening, it's possible it's because he is in one of your favorite movies of all time George. He played "Johnny Ola" in godfather part 2.

Alex Hyrule

pretty sure the greek guy as George calls him was in the mafia irl. basically just playing himself :)

p0sthum4n

Tony Sirico. He wasn't a made guy or anything. He was basically just a low level street tough back in the day. He was arrested 30 times. An acting troupe made up of ex-cons visited his prison while he was inside and that inspired him to try acting. But yeah, he's basically playing himself.

Dustin

"These Chinese don't know how to make authentic congee" was how I could see you saying it? It is rude yes, but so are those characters.

Donna Castellano

There's a rewatch of the series with Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa on HBOMAX. The stories those two tell about Sirico are hilarious. How he never let anyone touch his hair and did his own hair every day before he filmed. Highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. They have lots of guests on - some of them great.

Donna Castellano

Theres also a great documentary on David Chase and the show.

Adam Vialpando

Your confusion over Tony being boss is understandable. You see the pilot was filmed in the summer of '97 and the show itself wasn't picked up until later that year. Tony was indeed supposed to be the boss in the pilot. The second episode wasn't filmed until late '98 and by then they likely decided to change things around a bit and tried to explain away the changes.

ANDAUR J

Great show despite some very bad acting lol.

Thomas Young

For me it was when I was Four. My great grandmother had died, and it was the first time I ever saw my dad cry. I remember my parents explaining to me what death meant, and that it happens to everybody eventually. I had a mini existential crisis a little later about my parents dying someday. Thirty-two years later they're both still here, luckily.

Thomas Young

Yep, he was widely credited for cleaning up NYC significantly during the 90's with his 'cop on every corner' policy. NYC in the 80's and early 90's was a pretty dangerous place to be, which is why Livia didn't want to go.

Craig Brennan

FYI. People in Ontario tend to use both Celsius and Fahrenheit. Especially where you live close to the Southwest border. It was more reliable to use American forecast from Detroit Michigan. All local forecasts in Ontario gets routed to Toronto before being forecasted and then sent back to their local regions. Most of the time the Canadian forecast would be wrong in Southwest Ontario during the winter. Also it is due to Canada being highly influenced by the USA for television media.

Jared S.E.

Thank you. That was bothering the hell out of me.

Matt Vickers

I remember first realizing I would someday die when I was 8 years old. My grandmother died the year before, and I just finished watching War Games, and it all of a sudden clicked for me. I cried a lot, and had a bunch of recurring nightmares about my house burning down for a few weeks after. 30+ years later, and my family still brings up what War Games did to me.

TJ

But Pauly never even said "these" he said "F***in' Italian people how did WE miss out on this"

LSTER

I think it's the Z button at the back of the controller to accelerate in Mario Kart, so it is sort of possible to play one handed
