“College” was a landmark moment in TV when it came out as it showed its protagonist committing murder on premium TV. It was very debated by HBO top brass who thought it would make Tony unlikeable and kill the show but David Chase stood firm and set the tone for the rest of the show that no matter who we follow or how nice they can be sometime, anything can happen and anyone can do it. Sopranos already building its legacy in season 1

newhastings

its kind of a dead horse to say at this point but “College” is basically one of the most important episodes in tv history. HBO did not want Tony to commit cold blooded murder, it wasn’t a thing tv protagonists did, even in the 90s. But David Chase fought for it, and thanks to that it created a pathway for other iconic anti-hero shows like Breaking Bad and Dexter in the 2000s.

PIG

Try as I might, I can't stop looking at George's shirt. Worse yet, the shirt keeps fucking LOOKING BACK AT ME!!!!!! Like "eh? eh?"

Kim Jong-un

The movie with Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins is "The Remains of the Day". It's very good!

Cory Winters

I can’t hear this theme song without immediately thinking of that YouTube video of the orangutan driving a golf cart around like in the opening credits

blerbaberpaterb

i know fans of this show, or any show, is always extremely worried about S&G not liking it exactly the way they do. and therefor always feel the need to repeatedly tell them "ITS FINE IT GETS GOOD LATER". but like... at no point has S&G said anything about NOT liking the show. just like during all of S1 and 2 of TNG. theyve repeatedly said, yeah we are having a blast, enjoying this, loving this..etc. I dunno, i just feel like it might be better to take it easy, theres no need to pre-emptively go on the defensive when nothing has been said. if anything, i worry this over cautiousness of telling them it GETS BETTER LATER will make them feel anxious about sharing their honest opinion. sure, show gets better after certain seasons, but it doesnt mean it just hits a magical barrier where every moment of every episode becomes 10/10 perfect. there will still be flaws. but if you go over the top with prepping them to expect it to be amazing, then they will be worried about whether or not they're allowed to point out or notice flaws. like i get it, you desperately want them to like the thing you like. but every week telling them "IT GETS BETTER IT GETS BETTER IT GETS BETTER DONT WORRY" isnt helping.. let them decide. theyre intelligent adults.

blerbaberpaterb

oh and... lets not forget. if for whatever reason they end up not liking something you like. ITS OKAY. your world didnt end after they said they didnt like the new Superman or the old Superman 2 movie. your life didnt end. everythings fine as it turns out.

FWPJR.

It’s finally Sopranos Tuesday again, I can’t wait to watch this reaction when I have the time later today.

blerbaberpaterb

thanks for the useful and mature contribution.

SJB

Was anyone else getting slight sound problems with George's mic?

Dragonhunter

Yes multiple times, especially at 59:07 and onward

Tall Paul

To answer George on James Gandolfini, there aren't really any performances in movies on the level of Tony Soprano. He is good in everything he is in, but usually in small parts. That said he has supporting roles in two movies I really like - Fallen (Scary, Denzel Washington leading) and Get Shorty (Funny, John Travolta leading)

Cinebinge

huh. looks like there was some connectivity issues as raw footage also has it. will look into it, thanks for letting me know.

CryoniC

He has angered the machine spirit with that shirt.

JoeE

Gunga din was an Indian water carrier in an old rudyard Kipling poem

Keith Jones

I like how meadow gets tempted by kids to drink at that bar; one of those students plays Eve in season 5 of Angel. Carm tempted by the priest while her daughter is tempted by Eve.

Eric Schneider

One of my favorites. Would love to see a Cinebinge reaction!

Tom B

It’s gonna be very interesting to hear their opinions about Tony through the series! The discussion about the priest and Carmella was very good, but I’d like to hear more blame towards Tony since Carmella is emotionally cheating because she can’t get that with Tony!

Life in the cave of Garanoga

500 Large is $500,000. Large equals $1,000. Like he said the tax is fair, the amount isn't Even the 2 points on his business isn't too bad but the $500,000 is just ridiculous. The reaction from the Mafia to the show was mixed but very hated by a few mostly because they use a pump and dump scheme in a few episodes that real world police used to figure out it was something the Mafia was actually doing in New Jersey. A pump and dump is basically maxing out your vendor limit for a business and not paying for any of it so you can claim bankruptcy and sell the stuff on the streets.

Matt O'Keefe

I would say see Get Shorty for a pre- Sopranos Gandolfini movie of his. It has John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Danny Devito, & Rene Russo among others in it as well. Gandolfini is not the star, but he has a decent size role in it.

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

The Sopranos theme on a recorder must happen, also, it's long past time you guys were treated to THE GENTLEMEN! The Guy Ritchie film first of course, then maybe the series of the same name and universe on Netflix. I hear nothing but good things about it.

Ari Ramirez

James Gandolfini is great in anything you find him. Loved him the most in his roles on In The Loop and Zero Dark Thirty.

Stan the Man

“I like him. He seems like such a good dad” should be a put on a T shirt next to a picture of father of the year Tony Soprano

Kris

Lmao great shirt George 😂

Kris

Honestly, Sopranos was a big enough cultural phenomenon that "Sopranos Theme on a Recorder" would probably still go viral these days 😂 they've definitely gotta do it

Adam Vialpando

The executives at HBO had some misgivings about episode 5, specifically about Tony killing Febby in cold blood. They felt David Chase had done a good job in making Tony sympathetic to the audience and didn't like him doing such a violent murder. Chase felt it would be an insult to the audience, and his story, if Tony wasn't shown like this. n the original script it was even worse because in that version Febby wasn't a drug dealer and all that as shown was him having a family. I guess they decided to make him at least a little sleazy to make it more palatable for viewers.

Adam Vialpando

Fallen is such a good and underrated movie. I'd also like to add that I liked him in the Ben Affleck holiday comedy Surviving Christmas which is a guilty pleasure of mine.

DonkyDave

There was something up with your mic George

Jonathan Eaton

Simone on the recorder and George on the kazoo. That's the intro song I want to hear.

Snuggelbum

The movie with Anothony Hopkins and Emma Thompson that Carmela and the father is watching is called "Remains of the Day" and is one i'd really really recommend that you watch! i've tried to recommend it before in your chat, but i guess it's hard to miss. Either way, the movie has has a 96% rating on rotten tomatoes and 8 nominations at the oscars(for what it's worth)

Eversharpe

Simone as a mob boss "The honk of the goose," *makes some hand movements* 17 dead people.

Matt O'Keefe

Do they know that the actor who played Hyman Roth's 2nd in command Johnny Ola in The Godather part II is the same actor who plays Uncle Junior in this?

Matt O'Keefe

And a movie called Gunga Dun from 1939 is loosely based on that poem.

dieselbeast

Maybe I'm in the minority on this but have y'all considered just cutting out/skipping the whole intro opening theme song part so y'all won't be struggling to find something to talk about during it lol just a thought 🤔😁

Brien

George, your mic is making some serious scratchy sounds.

Anonymous Andy

I didn’t notice it until the second episode

Lanny Fisher

I think that Simone is right that any other psychiatrist would have immediately addressed the boundary violation and referred Tony to another therapist. However, it may be that Melfi has a bit of a fascination with the implications of treating a mobster and the inherent danger in it. Like Tony said, most people wouldn't make eye contact with him, but she didn't flinch.

Cinebinge

yep, something was wrong with the recording. will fix for future.

blerbaberpaterb

seems like it would be easier for viewers to just skip the song part to when the episode begins with 1 mouse click, than for them to trim and edit every file of every episode...

Kyle Baker

In the Loop is also a great role

JBK405

A patient confessing feelings for their therapist is not an automatic trigger for the therapist to end their relationship. That MAY be the right option, but it's not a requirement. It depends on whether the therapist believes they can control it (Both control their patient, and also themself). If they think they will succumb to their own temptations, or if they think their patient will become obsessed or fixated, then it is an issue of Ethics and Responsibility to refer them away and cut off contact. But if they think they can guide this to a healthy examination of those feelings -- which Melfi immediately tried to do when Tony said he loved her -- then it is appropriate and healthy to continue. My favorite little touch in episode six, after Mikey throws that guy off the bridge, is that he gives those witnesses a little bit of money before walking off. It was only a single bill, so definitely not enough to get somebody to lie for you on its own, but it makes them COMPLICIT. When a person makes somebody else feel like THEY are complicit in a crime (or anything immoral or untoward) they help to cover it up of their own volition. Those three men only accepted the money because they were terrified right then, but since they DID accept it they are now 'involved'. So if that fear ever fades they still won't want to come forward of their own volition, since they won't want to expose themselves. One of my favorite things about Junior, which is very obvious in this episosde specifically, is that he can almost always tell when somebody else is trying to manipulate him. He knows Olivia is pushing him to tax Hesh because she's mad at Tony. He knows that Tony is trying to make a point with the Octavian story (Even if he didn't understand what the point was). Everybody always thinks they're playing him -- and usually they are -- but he's not completely blind to what's going. He's never as dumb as they all seem to think he is.

JBK405

Oh! I forgot to say: Tony admits specifically to "illegal gambling" to Meadow partially due to how gambling is perceived in New Jersey. NJ has some of the more permissive gambling laws in the USA, and Atlantic City in the south of the state is the largest gambling city after Las Vegas. Because of this, a lot of people view gambling in total as 'pretty much legal' in NJ. So by admitting he's involved in gambling, he's saying "Yes, I do some illegal stuff, but it's not REALLY illegal". For contrast, if he'd confessed to running a car theft ring it still wouldn't be violent or admit to being a killer, but it would be "real" crime and Meadow may have shunned him for it.

simon brouillard

Remains of the day is a great heartbreaking movie. For Gandolfini I remember that he was in Zero dark thirty but I don’t recall any great roles or movies

Ste Rawlings

In answer to George's question about other Gandolfini roles, he's in an excellent romantic comedy-drama with Julia Louis Dreyfuss called Enough Said.

Angzarr

Simone on the recorder, with spoken word style lyrics by George.

Donna Castellano

I’m glad y’all are enjoying the series. It really does have its comedic moments. One of the best uses of comedy is in a fan favorite season three episode (my personal favorite season). You’ll see the show shift and become much larger in scope next season. Season one was originally a film idea by David Chase and he expanded it into a full season of television. Once you guys finish the show, I highly recommend the HBO documentary on Chase and getting the show made (no pun intended).

Ste Rawlings

"It would be weird to do a mob show with no law" Yeah, it's not really a mob show, it's a family drama (pun intended) that uses the mob as a backdrop and therapy as a plot device to explore Tony's inner battle with his conflicting identities as a family man and killer.

An Inanimate Fucking Object

Definitely not crazy for a therapist not to immediately stop therapy with a patient after they express feelings for her. There's a semi-common phenomenon called transference where patients project certain feelings onto their therapist. Obviously, it's patient- and therapist-specific, so some might (gently) try to push for a change of therapists, but in a lot of cases the therapist will do basically what Dr. Melfi did--set boundaries and try to explore the issue as part of therapy

Green Nolan

I highly Highly HIGHLY recommend "True Romance" for a Gandolfini role. It's one of Quentin Tarantino's first scripts and is directed by Tony Scott. It's a who's who of 90's actors. You will be absolutely SHOCKED at how many big stars are in it. It's a unique watch, because it's a Tarantino movie in every way that isn't directed by Tarantino. He actually wrote True Romance and Reservoir Dogs at the same time and sold the script of True Romance to fund the latter.

Simon Pegged Me

I loved Gandolfini in The Mexican (2001) and Crimson Tide (1995). He's in a supporting role in each.

Ben from Tenn

Sopranos is like a mob soap opera haha. Re Dr. Melfie, Tony advanced and tried to kiss her. That would have been the end right there before any 'I love you.' She's simply decided she's just going to embrace the extraordinary nature of this arrangement, risks and all. She quietly likes the little thrill and occasional dash of bad-boy charm in her otherwise very ordinary boring life. That's how I keep it believable anyway.

NOTTHELASTONEMANNN

Gandolfini is in some other good films, Where the Wild Things are, True Romance, Zero Dark Thirty but mostly minor roles sopranos is his only real spotlight other than some indie films

Angela D. Mitchell

Simone, on the question of Melfi's reaction, she handled the situation perfectly. She quietly shut down Tony's advances, moved things back to a professional distance, and then the following session, openly addressed his behavior. Tony accepted her response and didn't continue to push, so she felt comfortable continuing forward with him. It's not just "TV therapy," it's pretty good general therapy. Melfi knows that what Tony is experiencing is classic for someone with his issues -- transference is common for patients (and doctors). It's okay for Tony to have those feelings -- they are a common and temporary by-product of the process. It's just not ok for him to act on them. So to me, Melfi is being 100% professional here and I understand why she wants to keep working with Tony as long as he can abide by her boundaries. He is at a delicate point, the therapy is actually helping him, and the transference is simply a predictable step. And I think it led her to a pretty fantastic confrontation when she pointed out to him what she symbolizes -- mother, wife, daughter, all wrapped up in one package. I don't blame the priest as much, meanwhile, in that night with Carmela. I felt like he'd been kidding himself with a harmless flirtation and friendship without looking too closely at it. But when they actually connected emotionally, he saw what he was doing and stepped back. So I liked that he didn't proceed, and that he was actually honest with Carmela the next day about their having a moment that he will not pursue further. But I agree that he does overstep and use his role as her priest to influence her in ways that make me uncomfortable, even in advice about staying in her marriage. But the theme is so interesting! Both of these episodes address how much a part of their lives lying is for Tony and Carmela. We see Tony change the truth for Melfi to make himself look better, we see Carmela admit openly what she knows about Tony's activities, and we just as importantly see the car chat between Tony and Meadow, where he is "slightly" honest about his life but also lying for fairly understandable reasons -- his daughter doesn't need to know that side of him. Meanwhile, George, James Gandolfini was a prolific character actor -- I'd especially recommend Get Shorty, Where the Wild Things Are, A Civil Action, Hemingway & Gellhorn, The Mexican, Zero Dark Thirty, and he was wonderful in Enough Said, a gentle romance released posthumously. He was also a Broadway actor in productions like A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, and God of Carnage, where he was nominated for a Tony. Another great week! I wish y'all were reacting to more than two a week! It's so much fun to see your POV and commentary on this brilliant show.

I still don't get the term "emotional affair". I know it came from Americans about 7 years ago, when that started cropping up online, but aside from that... It makes no sense to me. Not saying you are or anything, but it sounds like an incels idea tbh, lol. "No, you're not allowed to share you feelings and emotions with ANYONE but your HUSBAND! You... vibe harlot!" 😂

Thall

So if they talk about "I love you" or "I want to be with you" but don't bump uglies, that's an emotional affair? And appeciate the answer!

Thall

Well the incel thing was more an example of what the term "emotional affair" feels to me. Not saying anyone in the show is, and certainlly not S and G. Incel is well known to me, just 'emotional affair' is such an odd, culturally foreign concept to me. But the explanation makes sense. It also suggest to me that most people use that term very wrong for any time where a person opens up emotionallly to another that isn't their spouse. And THAT makes no bloody sense to me in terms of a concept.

Ben Schwartz

Loyal fan here... I am once again *begging* you guys to adjust the sound mix. It seems like both of your microphones are more or less at the same volume level, but the problem is when one person regularly laughs and giggles extremely loud but when the other person laughs hard, they are not nearly as loud in the mix and they sound just fine. But it results in me constantly having to turn the volume up and down to hear things without bursting my eardrums. Anyway, I digress. PLEASE fix the mix!

Hunter DeRensis

I love that they're still treating Sopranos as a regular TV show; "this dialogue tells me X is going to happen" or "This is going to be developed into a storyline later." When in actuality it's much truer to life and its randomness than any other prestige show.

Holdenk

I'm surprised you mentioned Goodfellas in this one, but you didnt recognize who plays Tony's therapist. She also played Ray Liotta's wife in Goodfellas

TJ

Not sure what you mean by "Hesh is the Mariah Carey of the mob" Mariah actually wrote her own songs. Hesh didn't

TJ

Is this a real question lol

Thall

Well, it wasn't a question. And as I said, neither in Spain, nor Germany or Italy have I ever encountered that term. Can't wrap my head around the concept, find it absolutely insane. But it fits with Anglosaxon cultures I guess, y'all are very scared of people and very posessive of everything.
