Now yous can’t leave.

Poineapples

Hell yeah, Guillermo Del Toros Pinnochio next please!!!!

Jeff K.

“This kid looks familiar.” - Simone, if you’ve ever seen Veronica Mars, that kid grew up to play Weevil.

DaveJ

This is a great one! Donnie Brasco would be my recommendation for a good mob movie to look into.

megamoo chilli

Simone has been watching Make Some Noise. I recognized the offering of three good sticks.

FWPJR.

Finally, I’ve been waiting all week for this. I can’t wait to watch it after today’s Football games are over.

FWPJR.

Love that scene so much

FWPJR.

I would love to see that happen

Adam K

Anyone who saw this movie as a teenager absolutely used the door test. I definitely did.

Mike FromOz

Wise guy names for both of you? Hrmmm... I am going to go with Smilin' George and Simone Jeepers 😁

Mastervodo

Solid recommendation!

Jeff K.

Ok, waited until the end to see if it would come up in the trivia, but the reasons you haven’t seen more of Lillo Brancato (older C) is because of drugs, and prison. He was a heroin addict and was charged with second degree murder and burglary; he was not guilty of the murder but went to jail for the burglary. Wasted talent, indeed.

"Now youse can't leave," Every person everywhere has wanted to say that to a group of assholes from the beginning of time (if they had the backup). Including me lol This, like much of the movie, actually happened in Chazz's life in the Bronx. Heard it on Jim Norton (piece of GAbage).

JBK405

You noted it doesn't feel like a normal "gangster movie", because it's not: It's a Coming of Age film that is SET within a crew of gangsters. But the story is Calogero growing up and learning to deal with it all. You asked what a "borough" is: For New York City specifically, it's one of five government subdivisions within the city itself. They are the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Each one is big enough to count as a city itself (The Bronx has a population of 1.4 million). Within each borough you'll find neighborhoods and individual enclaves. We do have economic info on a lot of gangster eras. For most, their earnings were actually very mediocre unless you happened to be very high up. The last figures I saw (which are a few years out of date now) is that modern street drug dealers actually make less than minimum wage. Despite all of their talk, they all were really just "suckers" like regular working people. The street criminals dreamed of working their way up to becoming a Boss, just like your average legal worker dreams of someday becoming a millionaire, and it's unrealistic for both of them given the economic system we live in.

I am wanting to see a Simone intro with an Italian accent, and hand movements she practiced all day. And, I want a like and subscribe message that threatens everyone or you gonna get 'whacked, capisce? With all the Sopranos and mob movies, we can make this happen, am I right, or am I right? Fugeddaboudit! And like DaveJay said earlier - Donnie Brasco would be a great one to do next! Seriously! Maybe next week?

Chris Henderson

Please give Harlem Nights its a good funny story sorta similar to this in certain parts.

Christina Doxstader

The whole thing with Sonny and C's relationship is that Sonny sees a lot of potential in C and he doesn't want him following his foot steps because he knows where it eventually leads. Sonny also has a lot of respect for Lorenzo. It's not really shown explicitly in the film but you know it's there because of how he treats C and how he doesn't continually try and rope Lorenzo in. They are just two dads trying to make sure their son grows up right.

Adam Vialpando

I wonder if Sonny ever offered C a soft drink of his choice. He looks like a Diet Fanta kind of person.

Brandon

I have a friend that could never remember the name of the band 'Coheed and Cambria' so he was always calling them "Carpaccio and Calogero" after the name of a restaurant and the name of the protagonist. As a result, I always think of this movie when I hear a song by that band.

Rob Parry

I saw Chazz Palminteri (Sonny) do a great one-man show of A Bronx Tale on Broadway around 2008. He's back to doing it again mainly on the East Coast in the US in 2026. Worth checking out.

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

Am I the only one who just can't get into this film? I tried a couple of times in the mid-90s and it's just never hooked me. Chaz Palminteri on the other hand, murders his role here! It's almost like he wrote the thing, lol.

Dustin Duvall

Unrelated: I joined this channel initially for The Wire rewatch, and just heard about the passing of James Ransone. RIP Ziggy

Dustin

So good! One of my favorite movies. The "Now yous can't leave" scene with the bikers is so great. Looking forward to your reactions.

Guy-on-Couch

they thought Carpaccio and Calogero was easier than Coheed and Cambria? lol

mpd

To me he looks more of drink water kind of person

Jay Davis

Now yous can't leave coming from Chaz is also one of my favorite lines in moviedom.

mike moake

The Irishman (also known as I Heard You Paint Houses), not really a feel good ganster movie, but it goes hard in some spots.

Matt Dellarosa

Thank you. I was waiting to see if anyone would bring it up. Lilo Broncato expressed regret over it and apologized in an interview but ultimately Chaz Palmenteri was very dissapointed in him and wanted nothing to do with him afterwards.

Dustin

Hey, George and Simone.... There's a fantastic DeNiro movie you should watch, which just happened to also be Leonardo DiCaprio's first leading role. It's called THIS BOYS LIFE. Highly recommended.

RDM

I’ve watched this movie like a hundred times and only just realized that the gun dealer Nicky Zero was played by Domenick Lombardozzi (Herc from The Wire). 🤣

Brandon

Not sure if it was easier to say, it's just that he could never remember the name of the band. 😂

David

You recognize C's mom because she plays Artie's wife in The Sopranos.

Jay Davis

I doubt it'd do well for the channel but I'd LOVE it if you all watched The Good Shepherd. Not kidding, I must've rewatched that 3 dozen times at least. It's disturbingly good.

David

Y'all should go back and watch Goodfellas again now that you're watching The Sopranos. The amount of actors in both is pretty crazy. The main ones being Dr. Melfi, Christopher, Larry Barese (one of the capos) and Paulie. As well as some other characters y'all have yet to meet in The Sopranos.

Jeff K.

Just read that. A friend of mine went to high school with him, too, so I had an extra soft spot for him because of that connection. Tragic. Especially when you read the early reports that it seems to have been self-inflicted… ugh. Horrible.

Jeff K.

Forgot to mention this earlier, but since you guys noticed how much Lillo Brancato looks like he could be Robert De Niro's son, that's actually literally how he was discovered and got this role. A scout saw him and noticed the pretty amazing resemblance to a younger De Niro, and then had him do a Taxi Driver impression and that was pretty much all they needed to cast him as the teenage C.

MacGuffinStuff

Harlen Nights is great, I also want them to watch Life some time, Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence are hilarious together.

MacGuffinStuff

This is an absolute classic. Fantastic soundtrack too. This movie, no bullshit, probably helped a lot of people I've known, back in the day some of my friends and family were sort of off the books so to say, with a lot of their income, and not in actual gangs for the most part but sort of adjacent and connected. Anyway a lot of them were also starting to have kids and all that and I remember hearing people talk about this movie, quoting it, the door test lol, but actually seemed like this movie got to them on a deep level, the way Chazz Palmentieri wrote these characters and scenes it feels oddly familiar even though we're on the opposite coast and not Italian, but how it's about two versions, not necessarily competing, of what makes a man, what is honor, etc. and it's not at all about being the toughest guy, it's the relationships. I think they might not use that language but the people I'm talking about understood the movie and it really affected them. Most of them just stopped fuckin around, got more serious, some joined the military, some went to school, some just took their jobs more seriously, but generally they just got more focused on being good parents. Some movies have more significance in the long run and in people's actual lives than you might think.

Mike FromOz

If you're on a real gangster kick at the moment, I will again recommend "Miller's Crossing" by the Coen Brothers. It's about two rival factions of gangsters going up against each other, with one man caught between them both. It's both serious and funny, exceptionally well written, fantastically acted, and is one if not the best Coen brothers movie ever written and directed. Pay real attention to their use of language and dialogue, it's so great. Absolute top tier level recommendation.

Mike FromOz

It also stars Albert Finney, who you saw giving a great performance in "Big Fish", as well as Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden (whom I love), John Turturro and Jon Polito (who you saw in 'The Big Lebowski' for a short while).

Shibby

For a goofy Robert De Niro you should check out Stardust its a great movie.

FranciscoGios

American Gangster 2007 is a good movie if you guys want to continue the Gangster life. Its somewhat of a dark tale. And I just found out about the actor who played Robert De Niro's son. Not a good news.

Moonman

The actor who played Deniro's son was convicted of robbery where someone was killed, went to jail for many years

G B

Few notes as a native New Yorker who actually grew up a few blocks from Mt. Carmel church in the Bronx lol Boroughs in NYC are like big towns with a bunch of smaller towns inside of it. Although all 5 boroughs make up NYC, all 5 are distinctively different. This movie depicts what is refereed to as “little Italy” which is only about 4-5 blocks, about a couple hundred feet lol I think what you missed George is that sure, knowing he’s a mobster, the rational thing would be to seek diplomacy. But in being known as a “working stiff” there’s a certain protection his father has as a civilian, which is also shown when whispers asked Sonny if he wanted to handle him and Sonny said no. Growing up in neighborhoods similar to this, the WORST thing you can do is be too soft with your approach. At the end of the day, Lorenzo is a man and must stand his ground when someone is messing with his family or he’ll lose the respect of both the gangsters and his family. At worst you take a beating, but better to go down swinging and fighting for your respect than losing it and never being able to get it back.

Doug's Night Terrors

Another good mob movie is Donnie Brasco 1997 with Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. Isn't like A Bronx Tale. Closer to Goodfellas. Based on a real guy and true events.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Solid directorial debut from De Niro, shame he didn’t get more opportunities to be behind the camera. But the dominant creative force goes to Chazz Palminteri as both writer & Sonny. Love how his story act as a sort of snapshot to this place & community and makes a case for the proverb of “it takes a village to raise a child”. And I’m a sucker for the doo-wop and jazz soundtrack. My oddball recommendation for another “gangster” flick, though BT is clearly more of a coming of age story, is “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai”. I’m a fan of Jim Jarmusch movies and I like how he handles the idea of mobsters who reach their golden years and I’m hoping y’all will enjoy the similarities to “Drive” from awhile back.

Shooting Dice Explained Briefly: 1st Roll- IMMEDIATE WIN if they roll 7 or 11. IMMEDIATE LOSS if they roll a 2, 3 or 12. THE POINT: 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, becomes the point. GOAL: To Roll- that POINT without rolling a 7 in which you pass the dice to next player. The player bets an amount and the onlookers match that bet for the game to proceed while side bets from onlookers are made on who will hit whatever POINT is made.

Simon Pegged Me

Neighborhood Names George: Because of all the questions, "Socrates" or "The Greek" when being referred to. Simone: Because she loves animals so much and humans so little, "Peta."

sb

Goodfellas came out 3 years before A Bronx Tale.

Jean-Dominic Lapointe

Every time I read “A Bronx Tale” my brain thinks it’s “Rumble in the Bronx” ha ha ha

Dustin

That line delivered by Rorschach in Watchemen was also hella cold. Same "you are so cooked" intensity.

Brad Lowry

I love Jim Jarmusch too! I was inclined to see Ghost Dog when it came out because of Forest Whitaker but it slipped away… I’d’ve for sure seen it if I knew it was a Jim Jarmusch film! Thanx!

Brad Lowry

It’s a really poignant cautionary tale… I’ve seen some things streaming that chronical his tragic fall. G&S were right, every expectation was that with a debut like this that he’d just stack up roles. Too bad.

Florian

Wanna reccomend the good sheppard, I dind't see it in a while but I loved it back then. Didn't knew its also directed by Di Nero.

thomas king

The actress who played De Niro's wife is Artie's wife in the Sopranos.

Hans Czajkowski Jørgensen

I have only ever seen the theatrical(?) cut - around 2h 55m long. I would love to get my hands on the 3:49 cut that you mention, but am unsure where I can get it. All the listings I see quote 2h 55m. If you could point me to a proper 3:49 edition, I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance. P.s. I am not averse to sailing the high seas if necessary.

Holy Squire

A lot of pathos as C learns about both romantic and filial love.

Brandon

I just looked up the actor that played the younger Calogero... and it blew my mind to learn that it's Weevil from Veronica Mars.

keoma songs

100%. I don't even want to quote lines for risk of spoilage

Lea Osborne

Lillo Brancato was De Niro's son. Tons of talent who got screwed by the system and sent to jail for being a driver in a robbery. His career never really recovered.

Glenner7

I live in fear of the next dad joke.

Brian K.

Chaz bet on himself and won.

Logan Kerlee

Just got finished watching the reaction/movie and wow - I had such a great time! :) This movie was a great one.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

It just occurred to me that you two haven't seen "Stardust" (2007) and that needs to change lol. DeNiro like you have never seen before lol. Stacked cast but if you really want to see DeNiro in all his glory it's a must watch. Fun little fantasy film.

photos_by_geoff

George & Simone, I just watched this reaction for a 4th time and watched you both wondering if this was about DeNiro's life or his dad's life. I just saw an interview with the actor who played Sunny and he said it was actually his life experience. His first real name is Calogero, but he adopted Chazz as his first name for his movie career.. He wrote tge autobiographical play named "A Bronx Tale" where he played 18 characters himself.
