Destruction!!!! YAAAAAASSSSS! 🌎💥🤘🏼

Mike FromOz

The Latino's have mutated!!!

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

Ahh one of my ultimate guilty pleasure movies. I love that buried In all the gratuitous destruction is a genuinely great performance by Chiwetel Ejiofor, I always appreciate an actor who can elevate the material and he does that in every scene he’s in

Jedi Lounger

Come on George, Simone needs to watch the cinematic masterpiece that is Moonfall. Also other Roland Emmerich movies that are not massive disaster movies would be Anonymous (2011), and White House Down (2013). That movie has a companion movie, Olympus Has Fallen (2013).

Jacob Colson

Lmao wow.... that thumbnail. Jesus, Simone!

By Grapthar's Hammer, what a member!

When we were in high school in the early 90's (damn I'm so old) we were talking about the 2012 prediction then. Wow. Heaven's gate, Y2K, 2012.....I've survived quite a few apocalypses so far.

Jeff K.

This movie is so bad and I cannot help but love it.

Robert Cooper

I first learned about the Long Count calendar in the late 80s. It's a major plot point of the Shadowrun RPGs.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Haha I remember seeing this back in the day ahead of the year 2012 down here in AussieLand and being aware of the Mayan Long Count that was to come. Funny enough the council power company tripped power for 5 minutes at midnight on December 21st and got a class-action lawsuit filed for distressing the populace… Erm anyhow fun movie and Mr. Emmerich never shies away from the exact spectacle he wants to make! Possibly a top three Woody Harrelson role for this guy haha

Spacedone

I'm sure that George will have found this out (since it's in the film) but the whole 2012 end of the world nonsense was popularised because of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar used by the Mayans (and Olmecs). 21 December 2012 marked the end of a cycle (about 394 years) of that calender so obviously it was picked up by fiction writers and doomday nuts as a great narrative device, in a similar way that the end of the millennium spawned a load of Christian-theme doomsday stories.

OddThomas

For more John Cusack: Identity and 1408 are my top picks. Roland Emmerich: Godzilla '98

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Mr Ejiofor is a true blue legend. Loved the man’s work since Serenity 😁🤙🏻*edited for typo

jmundt33a

God, I hope not.

jmundt33a

Roland tends to repeat himself with images and things collapsing. Also, his movies after the turn of the new century take a very steep dip. The Patriot is fondly remembered even if no members of the Martin family age over a period of 7 years or more. After that, steep decline into Moonfall, Greenland and Even Greenerland.

Inkpendude

I went to theaters see this movie with my dad...Then a couple of months later there was a massive earthquake and I really thought we were all gonna die (earthquake in chile 2010)

DasBigUn

Gorge isnt going to like this cause it divorces a sense of logic about 30 mins in

Stephanie Bedworth

I actually love Greenland but that's not a Roland Emmerich film, right?

s0rd3z

Omg that thumbnail 😂😂

blerbaberpaterb

i just finished the Youtube version and he literally said that he enjoyed it. it feels more like youre going in expecting him to dislike it so everything he says will feel like he dislikes it to you. which case, no matter what he says, you will only hear what you wanna hear.

Marcus Hicks

This is easily my most hated disaster movie. Would have maybe made a good CineCringe entry though.

Tay Schumaker

This is a great “it’s Sunday afternoon and this is on TBS” movie

someguywho

Throwing in my suggestion of threads for disaster movie. 80's British nuclear apocalypse

Marcus Hicks

The Patriot is the ridiculous ahistorical, flag-waving bs that was increasingly typical of 21st century Mel Gibson.

Marcus Hicks

Identity is a grossly underrated movie. I would also recommend Better Off Dead.

Marcus Hicks

It was also picked up by the designers of Shadowrun as the date when magic returns to the world.

Marcus Hicks

True story, my 40th birthday fell on December 21st 2012.....so I had a big "end of the world" party to celebrate. Even ordered a cake which had an image of the Mayan Calendar on it.

Marcus Hicks

Yep, that is where I learned about it too. I was into Shadowrun before I was even into Cyberpunk.

William

Yuuuuuup. Nailed it.

DasBigUn

naaaa, it was more jokeingly said on my half. I would hope he really did enjoy it and it seems like (from the patreon intro) is going to have a lot of fun with it :)

newhastings

i know cinecringe is dead, but if y’all are doing this you HAVE to do war of the worlds 2025, i beg you

Cartoons ReAct

Schwarzenegger was still governor and he couldn't do any acting while he was fulfilling his duties, I think it was for about 8 years that he denied any acting jobs

G P

This movie was terrible!

Kennesha

Favorite president? Harrison Ford in Air Force One

paul rai

Honestly, this is a perfect watch for today because I’m snowed in and pretty much stuck at home until tomorrow, so this was an ideal, cozy watch of a dumb fun movie.

Tom B

I want to hear Simone sing all of Intergalactic!

Michael Robayo

Roland Emmerich made one great film. The Patriot (2000). Must watch.

D.A.V.E.

OH NO! You should have seen "2010" first! This won't make any sense. messagebroughttoyoubythewatchmoresequelscampaign. 😉

Stephanie Bedworth

Sometimes you just wanna watch shit blow up. I eagerly await future reactions to San Andreas, The Wave, and Greenland.

DonkyDave

I'd forgotten just how utterly absurd this film is but it is a blast to watch

Russell Massey

The Mona Lisa is 30 inches by 21 inches. It looked about right in the film.

DonkyDave

You think it takes that long to lose it's sense of logic? I swear the ridiculous part about mutated neutrinos is sooner than that...

REDR58

No! That’s much too cruel!

Dan Holmes

George if you're unfamiliar with "pyroclastic cloud" then you both NEED to watch Dante's Peak, the best disaster movie ever :)

Dan Holmes

In college my friends and I wrote a script Idea down called "Buddy Presidents" about Harrison Ford's President from Air Force One and Bill Pullman's President from Independence Day both running for reelection against each other and somehow through hilarious unrealistic legal shenanigans end up Both winning in a tie. They then had to run the country together and it was a sort of Odd Couple/Buddy Cop genre political comedy 😅

Kennesha

Haven't seen that one but yeah.

Stephanie Bedworth

My personal favorite was Terry Crewes in Idiocracy although now it seems a little prophetic.

Opti_Frog

I don't know what Emmerich was thinking when he made Moonfall, because 2012 really is the disaster movie to end all disaster movies. And this time, we didn't get cheated out of the end of the world. The second act is pure destruction porn. Once the earthquake hits LA and they get into the Limo, i'm so on board. But i don't usually bother watching the third act. It's so unnecessarily overlong and boring compared to what came before.

DasBigUn

fair...it was like...immediately. It reminds me of....dare I mention the hated cinama....I shall....MOONFALL

OddThomas

More good disaster movies: Deepwater Horizon, Dante's Peak, Daylight, Take Shelter, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Only the Brave

JBK405

Yes, the trivia you read at the end is correct, the Mayans never had an End of the World prediction for 2012. Their calendar ended at that time, but you know what happens when a calendar ends? A new calendar begins! The 2025 Gregorian calendar ended at 11:59:59PM on December 31, and then the 2026 Gregorian calendar started at 12:00:00AM on January 1. Nobody who knows how calendars work looked at a 12-month calendar said "Look, there's nothing after December 31. That must be the apocalypse!" Non-Mayan people just saw the end of their calendar in 2012 and made up an entire corresponding doomsday mythology.

By Grapthar's Hammer, what a member!

With about 3000 billionaires in the world NOW, the number of people on the arks who bought a seat is very very small. Considering the effort Yuri spent trying to get there many of them might not have even made it.

GAB

The Mona Lisa is way overrated. If you look carefully you can see that the horizon lines at each side of her head don't match up. I was very unimpressed when I saw it in the Louvre. I last watched this movie in 2009. By the end, I was so sick of its dumbness and so bored with the final act that I was just dying to get out of the cinema and into the open air. Would I be interested to see a sequel where all the rich people with no useful survival skills and no aptitude for manual labour finally die of hunger after eating all the animals that were on board and finally each other? Probably not. Hopefully, the workers would do a runner and not willingly be subservient to the arseholes whose money is now worthless.

latsöm

Who would call this movie fun? I mean it is, but also very much not.

latsöm

Please do Moonfall btw, it's his best movie IMO and it's a genuinely good little sci-fi story!

Amelie W

My favorite part is how after the big twist it feels like nobody knew what to do with the rest of the movie. We're not going to live in space, psych! So let's just. . .float around a bit. . .and then the Earth just stops falling apart instead of becoming uninhabitable like we were told. . .and that part with the end of the world, eh, too depressing, turns out things are mostly fine and they make land and everybody comes together to start again in international solidarity, yay! The microwave neutrinos and Earth's disappearing magnetic field and the global ash clouds from infinite volcanoes and all that apparently stopped being a problem. They manage to make it feel like they wanted the space arks and only figured out mid-production they didn't have the budget for that and had to cobble something together, which would be silly, but it may be only a little more silly than this movie. As to what was supposed to happen in 2012, the most popular prediction I heard was from Terrence McKenna, who used the I-Ching and a lot of LSD to create what he called a "timewave graph" with peaks and valleys that matched the "intensity" of historical periods and went a bit into the future until it "collapsed" in I think 2015. And then after hearing about the Mayan calendar thing he redid the math and amended it to 2012. Supposedly we're now living in the collapsed timewave, where historical events would occur that defy the laws of physics. You might say that's philosophically arguable. I always figured it would have been funny and pragmatic if they just never told the jackass billionaires to evacuate, but now that I think about it, there's only 3,000 billionaires. Even fewer back in 2009. They hardly make a difference! Really the villains are the ones going straight to eugenics to select passengers; between 900,000 people (it seems they planned 9 arks) you'll have any possible diversity you want in a founding population anyway. The Yellowstone explosion though, on the big screen, easily one of the most "holy shit" things I've seen in the movies.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

I view this movie as the last gasp of the 90's popcorn disaster movie. Not that they don't still make good ones, but people don't really go to the movies for stuff like this anymore, at least not in droves like they used to. This was basically the final escalation of "How much can we blow up in around 2 hrs?" line of movies. Just pure destruction all over the place and it's great.

Daniel Bjork

I’m not sure ya’ll thought this Simone preview image through

tom david johansen

think it was the second movie where Zlatko Burić felt to his death, of what these 2 have watch, the first was Superman :3

blerbaberpaterb

or, they thoroughly thought about what gets the most clicks.

blerbaberpaterb

theres self made and theres inherited. the latter is much, much more common. its not hard to stay rich or become richer if your starting point is owning an emerald mine or a 'small loan' of a million dollars from your dad.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Have you considered watching Paracinema here? They are basically films that are purposely made to be "trash", but also fun and sometimes very artistic. Now I know the water gets really muddy with this genre so I get why you would maybe avoid it but there's some good gems in the little genre. The first "Purge" is a modern example but the one's from the 70's-90's were more fun, gore, and just pure ridiculousness lol. "Toxic Avengers" (1984) and "Class of Nuke'em High" (1986) are good examples. Technically you have done movies that fall under the genre but not this specific sub-genre. George may have even done some on Cinecringe lol. If there's any other fans of the genre drop some suggestions.

SbE

Yeah, I can't think of anything more deserving of the top spot on that list. Some of the gibberish from the Core might come closer than anything else, but the neutrino bit blows that out of the water.

Jacob Colson

Or....the dreaded Cats movie. Lmao

Boba Fettuccine

Loved watching your reaction to this silly, silly movie. You've got to check out Dara O Briain's take on the "science" of this movie. You'll love it!

Ashton Lewis

#JusticeforGordon #3myboyGordy. Oliver Platt's character was 100% right all the time and Helmsley is a fool. Surprisingly enjoyable movie though, despite the nonsense!

Tom Hess

To answer George's question on the 2012 phenomenon: 2012 marks the end of a "baktun", a long period in the Mayan calendar. The whole "2012 is the end of the world" thing has been going around for a solid 50 years. Obviously it gained popularity the closer we got to 2012. But I was already hearing about it when I was a kid in the 90's. Recommendation time: There are still 2 good Roland Emmerich movies you haven't watched (ok, "good" is a relative term...). - Godzilla (1998). It's stupid but it's a ton of fun. I have many many reasons to believe you two would enjoy it. - The Patriot (2000). Kind of a companion piece to Braveheart. Lots of historical inaccuracies, but very well-made. Note: Simone will need tissues.

SbE

And they're heating up the planet! *shakes maracas*

SbE

Oh shit, I had no idea Scott, the asshole reporter from the Wire was in this, playing the boob-handler.

JayF

As far as the living space issue, you two aren't considering having to potentially stay on those boats for a very long time and the amount of resources required for all those extra people.

djKENTO

I'm not saying it's good, I just think the reaction to this dude's Godzilla movie would be REALLY fun. It's a WILD movie with a bonkers cast full of Simpsons alumni.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

There's been doomsday "prophets" for millenia. This 2012 thing seemed to gain popular attention in the mid 00s. Just before that, we had the Millenium Bug to worry about. Though at least that one was grounded in reality. Not aliens or angry deities, but the lack of foresight in technology.

Mastervodo

Thank you for the recommend!

REDR58

I imagine doomsday prophecy is nearly as old as humanity.

Florian

Everytime I see John Cusack I have to think of Edward Norton. Which brings me too we have not seen Edward Norton for a long time and I want to reccomend: Birdman

REDR58

I think Emmerich missed a trick by not releasing this movie in *2012.*

Mastervodo

Ah - but have you seen "The Core"!?

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I think so. Though it will have evolved with our knowledge of the true scope of the world. Like, many thousands of years ago, they were pretty much only concerned with the fate of their own tribe, which was definitely more exposed to the elements than our species is today. Then, as they grew more aware of the world as a whole, they would have imagined a more grand threat to the whole world. Probably when monotheism gained ground.

Mastervodo

Favorite part of the reaction is when the pocket pup and the Russian mistress get into the ark and flip off the billionaire Russian guy and how giddy Simone was. :) Also - no idea Simone liked pickles so much.

Happy Hanukkah

Wait a minute... This isn't 12/12/12? I am highly disappointed!!! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2313780/ I am also puzzled that this movie features John Cusack. For some reason I was sure it was Ben Stiller. :-P 2:13 I guess George isn't getting a cookie. 4:05 Simone, you could also put a full ice bucket on your head: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116654/mediaviewer/rm2764007936/ And yes, I do recommend the fascinating The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). I'll note that "fascinating" is not synonymous with "good." 4:21 *Mutated?* *Neutrinos?!* 🤣🤣🤣 5:09 Simulataneous censored "Holy sh!" I guess the President is too old for your sh1t.

PDP1472

On George's comment about the end happening every year: The Rapture was supposed to happen last September. There was a whole 'RaptureTok' thing going on. I guess they have to wait for next year... And in defense of Simone; a lot of people underestimate the size of jet fighters; they're shocked when they see schoolbus-sized aircraft. . And the size of a ship designed to carry around 90 of them is almost comical.

Happy Hanukkah

"Even Greenerland." And his sister, Eva Green.

Justin Leone

George, I think the reason you haven't heard about what was actually supposed to happen in 2012 is that all the commotion over it was never based on anything other than the Mayan calendar ending on it. I don't think they ever predicted any sort of end of the world, let alone a specific cause. They just... Had to end their written calendar at some point, and that seemed like an arbitrary enough distance in the future. Presumably, had their empire lasted a few hundred more years, they would have updated it, but long before we reached a century where it would be relevant to do so, the Mayans were more or less wiped out and/or absorbed into European culture and they stopped making those calendars.

Tinfoilnation

Roland Emmerich tropes for (almost) every disaster film he's made: * A father trying desperately to reconnect with and/or save his child * Gratuitous, over the top disaster porn * Landmark destruction. * Wise Hermit/Homeless dude. * An Evil ( Business | Politician ) Guy * Execrable "science" - it will be so bad it has to be put in quotes. * Heroic Sacrifice ... *someone* is gonna die saving the world/family/whatever in the most tearjerker way possible. * Fridge Logic: At some point in the film, usually when you pause to go to the fridge and grab a drink, you're gonna think to yourself "But wait - why didn't they just $X?" (Solve for X) and that $X is gonna be a MUCH smarter or obvious way to have handled it. Edit: Oh and... dunno if it's been mentioned or not but Simone's camera white balance was WAY off for this one :p

REDR58

I don’t recall hearing anything about the 2012 prediction until this movie started being advertised and talked about and all the rigmarole and promotion around it.

REDR58

The aircraft carrier seen the movie, USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) was built in 1964, served for just iunder 39 years and is undergoing scrapping as of 2025. The ship was 1,052 ft (321 m) long at the deck and had a hull length of 990 ft (300 m) at the waterline. The ship’s deck was 252 ft (77 m) wide and 130 ft (40 m) at the waterline. The ship was 192 ft (59 m) high from top of its mast to the waterline. Under full load, the ship had a displacement of 82,655 long tons (83,981 t). It could carry about 80 aircraft. For as big as it was, it’s not even the biggest aircraft carrier ever built. That would be the USS Gerald R. Ford, with a length of 1,106 ft (337 m) and a beam of 134 ft (41 m) at the waterline and 256 ft (78 m) at its deck. The ship has a height 250 ft (76 m). It displaces about 100,000 long tons (100,000 tonnes) at full load. (Edited)

Happy Hanukkah

Mutated neutrinos destabilizing the Earth's structure? We're in a real pickle now!

Wicked Wookie

Their calendar is cyclical, which was one thing doomsayers elected to not include in the "predictions". It was money makers making something of nothing as the Mayans never had a disaster or cataclysmic prediction. They have talked about them in the past and there are other cyclical cataclysms they do talk about.

Opti_Frog

Some fanciful mythmaking here. I'm always amused by the insinuation that low-income people doesn't work hard enough. And "creating wealth is hard work, no matter your starting point" is the funniest thing i've read all day. If you're already wealthy, creating more wealth takes such hard work as putting some of your wealth in a bank account with good interest. Or, more likely, an offshore account in a tax haven.

Josip Buretić

I would love to see their reaction for Only The Brave more people should watch that movie!!

Josip Buretić

We need Only The Brave on the next poll for sure!! It is not even close how much that movie is better than 2012.....13 Lives is also great movie

Donna Castellano

I didn't see it mentioned in the comments but the CGI in this movie was invented for this movie. It's all new predictive physics stuff so that's why those scenes of them escaping in the car look good even now. The YouTube channel CORRIDOR DIGITAL did a segment on it for their CGI Artists React series a few years ago.

Twiska Brand

I never got the lady with the dog's character. She was cheating on her boyfriend with his pilot, that is why the rich russian didn't spend 1 billion euros on her ticket. And the Chinese guards weren't going to take anyone who didn't have a ticket.

John

A movie I would recommend starring Amanda Peet (John Cusack's character's ex-wife) is The Whole Nine Yards (2000). A lot of that movie takes place in Canada. As it relates to fictional presidents in movies you have not reacted to on the channel. I would recommend: (Actors playing the president are listed after the title of the movie) Fail-Safe (1964) Henry Fonda, The Man (1972) James Earl Jones , Dave (1993) Kevin Kline, The American President (1995) Michael Douglass, The Contender (2000) Jeff Bridges, Olympus has Fallen (2013) Aaron Eckhart, White House Down (2013) Jamie Foxx

Max

I was happy to see Doctor Phlox.

Bon Wa

They said in the last minute of the movie that Africa hadn't been flooded. If the majority of the African population survived we are looking at a bit more than 400.000 people alive.

George reading China as "Hina" is such a SImpsons moment

Happy Hanukkah

Blaming the Latinos? Have you no shame or compunction?!

There are not only 400.000 people ledft, they told you the whole africal continent was not flooded, so unless there is only living like 2000 people there, then there is a lot more :-)

December 21st is my birthday but I didn't get the blowout I was promised that year.

FranciscoGios

I can tell you the Mayans weren’t wiped out; their civilization just perished and or ceased to exist but not destroyed.

FranciscoGios

Of all the “End of the World” movies I put this one in the end; but it does have something right about the mentality of billionaires, governments and/or elites of today’s world them first over the mass.

gfixler

Man, I wish I could go back to 2012, when the only existential threat was the earth cracking apart into superfloods and megavolcanoes.

Aric Heintzelman

Personally, I don't remember anyone who actually believed the world was going to end, other than the occasional idiot ranting on the news. Mayan calendar running out just meant it was time to get a new calendar.

Andrew

Woody Harrelson literally just playing himself with his own wardrobe in this movie. Easiest money he ever made.

dys

Earlier Emmerich movies like Independence Day get some flak for being big and loud and dumb, but there is a core of humanity and stakes you can relate to that is pretty much absent in this movie or the Independence Day sequel.

REDR58

Sasha deserved to live!

REDR58

Mutant neutrinos...that mutated!

REDR58

Sharknado is way more fun than this.

REDR58

The visual effects for this movie were top notch and still look fantastic. Shame the rest of the movie isn't up tp that level.

REDR58

Late 2011 then.

Polecat21

I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out. I was expecting a somewhat realistic end of world movie so obviously I was severally disappointed. Now that I know what to expect, I thought I'll just go with it and it might be a fun watch, I was wrong. This is one horrible movie.

Steve G

This movie had its pros and cons, but overall it was entertaining. If you’re planning to watch more disaster films, you should check out Greenland. It’s well received, enjoyable, and I think you’d really appreciate it.

dys

I will say there's a lot I like in how it subverts tropes, like it has the whole divorced dad with mom's new husband who hate each other trope but the twist is the new husband is actually just a really decent guy. Or the trope of the political figure who doesn't listen to the scientist except in this Oliver Platt's character takes Chiwetel Ejiofor's character seriously from the beginning. I also like how we're made to think the arks are spaceships when it's totally implausible that we could have built spaceships like that with modern technology, only for the reveal that they're actually ocean-going vessels that actually would be plausible to build in the time they had. That doesn't make up for the total lack of depth to these characters otherwise but I do appreciate the subversion.

Polecat21

a vote for Don't Look Up

REDR58

You have seen Oliver Platt (Anheuser) in “Chef” (2014) as the restaurant critic who tangles with Jon Favreau's Carl Casper.. Tom McCarthy (Gordon) directed and has a role in the excellent Peter Dinklage movie “The Station Agent” (2003). A little of Woody Harrelson's Charlie goes a very long way. I did not care for that character at all. I refuse to believe the people around the president and those protecting him would not force the president to get on the plane. There’s no way in the world they would let him stay behind. The president has a responsibility to help maintain continuity of government so that is absurd on its face. Frankly it was selfish of him to stay behind. Him nobly staying behind was just so maudlin and tedious and it added nothing to the movie but time. That giant Antonov 500 aircraft was fictional but based on the very real Antonov An-225 which was built in the 1980s in Ukraine (only a single aircraft was completed) but was destroyed in February 2022 by the Russians. Here is a video of it taking off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDyQdvA4T_E How are international phone calls still working in this movie? Zlatko Burić as Yuri Karpov was in the newest Superman movie. Beatrice Rosen as Tamara was in “The Dark Knight” (2008) as Natascha. George, attempting to somehow drop the cars out of the back of the aircraft in flight without proper preparation would severely unbalance the airplane then probably result in its crashing. Unsecured cargo just shifting around inside of an aircraft and not even falling out would probably destabilize it. That said, it is possible to unload vehicles from the back of a flying aircraft, but you have to do it with sleds and parachutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hZhaF1ZzQ4 Simone, you saw aircraft carriers in the Top Gun movies! The world‘s smallest aircraft carrier is: HTMS Chakri Naruebet, a Royal Thai Naval vessel. It is 182.65 m (599 ft 3 in) long and 30.5 m (100 ft 1 in) wide at the flight deck. It is mostly used to carry and deploy helicopters. Canadian actor Stephen McHattie, the Ark captain, was indeed in “300” in 2006 and in “Watchman” (also from 2009). To my ear his voice sounds something like William Defoe It’s insane they didn’t have the ability to take all those dock workers because you know they would riot as soon as they realize they’re not gonna come along. Gordon’s and Tamara’s death was so stupid. Gordon and Tamara should’ve ended up together. Tamara’s death was just cruel the way they drag it out ESPECIALLY when she got the last laugh with Yuri. It would take so long to build a single one of these massive arks. Never mind just a few years. Just the engineering and designing of these vessels would take maybe a decade. Honestly, I could’ve done without the whole third act with the extremely overlong problems with the arks and everything. It should’ve ended long before that. All the speechifying was simply tedious. (Edited)

REDR58

To sum up, great visuals, but not saved by the utter drag of interpersonal problems I didn't care about in the slightest.

I hated Moonfall until Pointlesshub made a great case to appreciate it, even if just ironically.

movieator

Oh, it’s total garbage, but if you completely shut your brain down, it’s a really good parody.

Adam Vialpando

That honestly kinda makes it more annoying. Like they made the great stepdad yet give him the kind of horrible death reserved for the shitty stepdad.

So there was a deleted scene from the end of the movie where the Genesis survived and was sitting atop a pointy rock in the middle of the ocean like Noah's Ark myth lol. If it had been kept in, it probably would have been the most hilariously ridiculous thing in the whole movie, which is saying a lot haha. Also in that that scene on the bridge of the Ark after the big speech where that very noticable abrupt cut was, there was another brief deleted scene where Adrian very satisfyingly punched out Anheuser, before they go to the hydraulic room. That should have been kept.

Gaia Weylyn

Also just commented about this, did not see yours first. The other good deleted scene where Adrian punched out Anheuser was also satisfying lol

Logan Kerlee

Enjoyed the watchalong but yeah, oooh boy, this was a BAD movie! xD

AVATAR-X

Not a "realistic" disaster movie, but I still find it among my favorites. I think I just find the characters likeable, to the point that I want them to succeed for themselves not because I want them to save the world.

AVATAR-X

George asking about likeable Presidents, during this disaster movie got me thinking about... Olympus Has Fallen (2013) A bit of an odd mix of action, disaster and politics. Also, not a movie, but "The West Wing" (1999) TV show was one of the few times that I found "politicians" likeable.

pretzels4wetzel

In the US, the line of succession for the presidency goes obviously to the vice president, then the leader of the House of Representatives and then the Senate, then goes down to the 15 cabinet secretaries in order of when they were formed (Secretary of State, Defense, Attorney General, etc.). So when Oliver Platt’s character who is just the Chief of Staff (like the White House manager basically) starts giving orders like he has any authority, it is quite literally unconstitutional (DC gets wiped out like 5 minutes later so it’s not like there would be any repercussions but still).

Darren Harrison

This was the first Cinebinge watch where I had to turn it off before the end. George kept making the same point (which the movie also made) and spent roughly half the reaction time talking about it. Then, after the reaction proper, he kept talking about it. I was like, "Are we still on this?" and had to stop watching. Likeable movie presidents: Harrison Ford – Air Force One (1997) Michael Douglas – The American President (1995) Kevin Kline – Dave (1993), as Dave Kovic Henry Fonda – Young Mr. Lincoln (1939) Martin Sheen – The West Wing (TV Series) Robin Williams – Night at the Museum (2006) Morgan Freeman – Deep Impact (1998)

Michael Robayo

It's still his best film. I didn't feel that at all. Just because it isn't 100% accurate doesn't mean it's not a great film. Great emotion, great directing, great John Williams score. Great.

the Mayan 2012 conspiracies were some of the most fun I've had on the internet. everything from gathering magical alien crystal skulls to prevent doom to the second coming of Jesus Christ were theorized. I highly recommend that rabbit hole if you ever need to fill a night.

Jayson Phillips

No idea about Neutrinos mutating, but even Einstein said he hated Quantum Physics because there are no laws.

Ya’ll should really watch The Impossible (2012). It’s not a happy popcorn disaster flick. But it’s got some really good effects (largely practical) and powerful performances. The fact that it happened adds realism to the “disaster story.” It’s a really worthwhile watch. Certainly better than this film.

Helen Mucus

The Mayan 2012 end-of-the-world thing started in the 1960s; I've been aware of it since the 90s, and the closer it got to 2012, the more it came up in conspiracy circles.

Starring Naomi Watts from Mulholland Drive!

Yet another reason it was unbelievably absurd that the existing president's handlers did not force him to evacuate instead of being left behind to pointlessly mope around and do nothing of value.

REDR58

Dreadful. The only thing I *really* liked was the visual effects but eventually it got all the bit samey and not nearly good enough for me to ever watch this movie again (this was a first time watch for me). Cusack was good but I found Danny Glover quite miscast here. Or something with the role was just not working for me, but that could be the nonsensical way his character was handled.

REDR58

I somehow never saw this movie when it was first released (like a lot of other movies in the 2000s/2010s...) and I'm glad I did because I would have wanted my money back. At least this time it was a cheap rental. Blech.

There is nothing remotely plausible about the 2012 Arks. I *seriously* doubt you could build a single one of those arks in between the time the Sun's neutrino problem was discovered and when the ships were deployed. The engineering and design time it would take notwithstanding, first you'd need to establish a way to and then prepare/carve out/build the docks/shipyard inside of a *mountain* (and get all of your dock and ship building material there and built and somehow all in secret, not to mention how all of this it would realistically be paid for. Rich billionaires (and trillionaires, if any existed) would not be enough. As in wartime, for massive projects of this scale, whole national economies employing millions and millions of people would have to be almost exclusively geared toward this and that cannot be done in secret. To compare to a bit of realism, it's estimated that it will take 72 months just to *design* the absurd new "battleships" that Trump wants to build and at least several years to build a single one. And those vessels are planned to be a somewhat smaller than largest battleships ever built by the US, the 4 Iowa-class battleship designed and built during WW2. Each of the 4 Iowa-class battleships displaced about 60,000 long tons and are just under 900 feet long and about 102 feet at the widest point and they took less than a year to design and just under 3 years to build each one of them. The arks seen in 2012 are estimated to "weigh" about *5 million* long tons (can't find displacement, but it would be a lot) and be about *2700* feet long and about 390-490 feet in width. The dimensions of the 2012 Arks are vastly greater than those of those old WW2 battleships and dwarf anything else built in reality, including the biggest cargo vessel ever built, the "Seawise Giant" with a displacement of just under 82,000 long tons (edit: the ship had a deadweight of over 500,000 tons) and a length and beam of about 1,500 feet and 225 feet, respectively. It's not just length and width/beam (and draft) but the volume of these fictional vessels just shoots up compared other real ones. And in the movie they apparently planned to build 9 of these arks, I think? Only 4 seemed to be more or less complete. Granted, these ships are not naval vessels and weapons systems design time and cost doesn't apply, but there are so many other issues. You have to somehow source and store provisions for 100,000 people per ship (and all of the animals!) for however long you plan to be at sea (months?). Modern US aircraft carriers have crews of about 5000 sailors and the stores for them will last about 50-100 days before replenishment is needed. Actually, modern aircraft carriers are maybe a better comparison with the Arks and are somewhat bigger than the old battleships, but not vastly so. There is no way in reality you could build those 2012 Arks in the time required (and keep it a secret) even with nations states behind them doing nothing else. Other than the mutating neutrinos and the rapid destruction they cause to the Earth's crust, it's by far the most implausible thing about the movie. (edited)

I do agree about the stepdad, though!

I just can't with this movie. I disliked it when I saw it and still just think it's so over the top and nasty at heart. There's a mean edge to it. It's just weird that we're supposed to watch millions of people dying onscreen in loving repeated detail but cheer because this one family is okay? Yuck. And it's just so laughable from the first ten minutes. What we are seeing is a planet-ending event. There is really nowhere for anyone to go -- anywhere on the planet. Ever. They're all doomed. Instead, the movie has people arguing about whether or not to tell the American people what's happening when CALIFORNIA IS ALREADY GONE. I mean, sheesh. Meanwhile, I hate the way the movie wallows in little things like the ex and John Cusack weirdly flirting because we're all just waiting for the poor husband to die. It's so gross to me. I mean, she's FLIRTING with him in several scenes and it's so bizarre to me. And then the tearful hug at the end where she's sort of nuzzling his face. You can absolutely tell that somewhere there is a version with a kiss and they decided that was maybe not in the best of taste. But it's still so icky. George, I'm with you on Oliver Platt's character. I don't think he's really a successful villain. And even if he is occasionally not as nice as he should be, at least he has a brain. We see so many people here making decisions as if the world isn't ending THIS MINUTE. Simone, I don't think the movie is "unafraid to be brutal," for me it's actively cruel and gratuitous. But I was SO WITH YOU on the dog! Save the dog! Unlike the sensitivity and empathy of Deep Impact, meanwhile, this movie on the other hand seems to weirdly enjoy everyone's death scenes and sort of linger on them. The catastrophes and damage are just so ridiculously huge. Even as our special family manages to escape laughably time after time. When the movie should have been over in the first 30 minutes. It's awful. But I'm glad John Cusack and Amanda Peet and poor Thandie Newton and the rest of the terrific cast got paychecks. And it was fun to watch y'all react, as always! But grr. Everything this movie did wrong, Deep Impact did right. It's an embarrassingly stupid movie. The Core looks like Shakespeare by comparison.

I guess the president managed to convince them that he was too old for this sh1t. :-P

Since George mentioned British Columbia and not getting to see/hear it in reactions. ''Roxanne (1987)'' starring Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah is an amazing rom-com movie and is set in Nelson, British Columbia. It would do incredibly well on a poll

Donna Castellano

The Core is great. It's like a balance of Deep Impact and Armageddon.

Antonio Maderias

It's crazy to me how seriously everybody wanted this movie to be "more realistic" and "empathetic". HELLO ITS 2012....BY ROLAND EMMERICH.. I saw this movie shortly after the premier in late 2009. I was 17. I FULLY expected it to be a dumb disaster porn movie. Im flabbergasted that anyone can grandstand on points about how this movie makes no sense. It's literally 2012. Idk what yall expected. I love this movie, It's dumb fun. I think if there's any movie genre that doesn't always need a message it's disasterflicks. Majority are here for the spectacle and im saying that as someone who always looks for messaging.

16:03 OMG Is that Von Kovak from Wonderman? I legitimately thought that that actor made his debut in Superman!

Tyler Foster

George has already seen Moonfall and didn't like it, he mentioned it during either Day After Tomorrow or this one.

I just watched your reaction to Spotlight on Sunday. One person in these comments mentioned he was a director, but FYI, the new husband who dies in the gate, who you also recognized from "The Wire," was played by Tom McCarthy, who would win an Oscar for co-writing Spotlight, which he also directed (and scored a nomination for that, as well). Always funny when actors also direct and you see them playing a bit part in some ridiculous commercial action movie. Similar to how the bald, seemingly incestuous guy in Castor Troy's gang in Face/Off is played by Nick Cassavetes, the director of The Notebook.

Paul Mix

Oh, absolutely +1 on The Impossible!

Paul Mix

+1 on Greenland, esp. with the sequel coming out soon.
