2026-09-05 05:00 Please consider watching Azumanga Daioh. It is funny, sweet and weird and I think you would like it. Also for some sclice of life/romance vibes I highly recommend The fragrant flower blooms with dignity and My Dress-Up Darling.

Both pronunciations of guillotine are correct as far as English. One is British(gi-luh), one is US and Canada(gee-uh). US and Canadian is closer to the French pronunciation.

Ray H

Older lady. Not old lady. 😂 Sein is looking for MILFS, not GILFS or Elves.

VisualHigh

The fact you guys heard "older lady" and immediately thought of 70 year old women is really funny...

michael denny

As an American I have never heard any other than the French pronunciation of guillotine.

DocteurNS

I was going to mention Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. It's absolutely the sweetest, most feel-good show I've watched in years.

DocteurNS

It really is funny. XD though I guess t helps to understand a little bit of Japanese too, since they're saying "ane-san," meaning "big sister."

wb

my read on the blowing kisses gag was that it worked on himmel because he already loved frieren, further confirmed by the mirror lotus ring he understood the meaning of when he gave it to frieren.

lax

All names in the show are german words, and japanese voice actors for the most part make it sound likewise, so if you want to know how they exactly should sound you can search them on sites like forvo.

Mikebdrx

I swear this is show is the hardest to not want and jump ahead and just finish the season but I'm enjoying watching it with S&G to much.

Honey Hermsen

Leave it to George to be thrown off by the pronounciation of Stark's name, even though it's basically the same in the japanese version 😆

Jacob

The guy with the white cloak in the intro is Starks' brother from ep 12 and again for a split second in 15.

AlixFrost

I think the fact that Sein himself is more middle-aged when compared to the other characters threw them off too.

PG Modehouse

Sein's not trying to party with geriatrics, he's talking about someone in their late 30s, early 40s. A cougar.

Reed James

Frerien wore the ring at Himmel funeral.

blerbaberpaterb

i think theyre aware and are just joking lol.

Frieren english dub isnt bad but it has some odd quirks from choices that are born from a rushed and not well funded industry. Anime translations specifically are much better then 20 years ago but its still just foreign media translations.

Tom Hess

George: there's nothing wrong with trying the english dub of course, but you shouldn't rely on it for pronunciation. The names are german. Both the japanese dub and the english dub are getting some of them wrong. In Sein's case, the japanese dub is the correct one. It's pronounced Za-in. With a Z sound. Not an S sound. You can check the german pronunciation on Youtube. In Stark's case, both dubs are pretty close. In german it would be Shtark. SH sound. Not S sound. Either way. It's a japanese show. So I consider the japanese dub to be correct by default. But that's just me.

Milosz Skowronski

The easiest way is to type it in google translator. You get the translation, and a speaker button that gives you pronunciation.

blerbaberpaterb

i mean i would imagine the reason to use english dub to hear how a name is said is because its easier to pick out a specific word... when you dont know the language, it all blends together. especially when a name is also said with an accent.

Hatty Time

Lol it's so fun enjoying Frieren Fridays with you guys as S2 is releasing at the same time. I get to watch you guys get drawn into the romance, and on the same day see where the romance is currently at in S2.

lax

It is exactly simple on forvo, and you can listen how real native speakers pronounce words, not TTS.

DocteurNS

Isn't he... like... in his 20s? I mean, I don't think it's ever stated. But he can't be older than 30. Though I guess, by anime rules, it's practical ancient.

Jose Robles

I always thought that redhead guy from the intro was Stark brother now I think you may have a point to think it was the son of Lord Orden

Omar

Frieren's dubbed sensual mommy voice never clicked with me, it also does not make sense with Sein being there. He for sure would have mentioned something about Frieren having that type of voice but the body of a child. Every other dubbed voice is fine.

Johan Gustafsson

Wait, so you changed the subtitles to the good ones, but instead started listening to the inferior dub that the bad subtitles are based on? That's funny. I mean, we have seen the show before so it was for your sake we pointed out the bad subtitles.

Cinebinge

hi Johan, as i said in the video, i chose to watch ONE episode in dub, just to see what its like. i have no intention in switching to dub for the rest of the show.

Manny Fleurmond

Older ladies not old. Sein basically likes women in the 30-40 range, I guess. He's not after grannies, just more mature women, at least older than him.

RMS

I’m glad you guys understand Fern’s actions and comments towards Stark. Many reactors think she’s snarky and mean but you see her sweet gestures towards him. Their romance is definitely very endearing and I think the show captures the awkwardness well.

Ryan Searle

i had a feeling the scene where himmel puts the ring on frieren's finger was gonna break Simone

Ogami

The dub itself is not bad but it changes the personalities of some characters quiet drastically, especially Frieren herself. She is much more snarky in the English dub and they gave her a much more mature voice which in my opinion misses the point of the character. She is supposed to be a young adult, barely out of her teenage years as a elf but at the same time has lived for over a 1000 years. So she constantly switches between competent and cool vs bratty and immature. Thats an important part of her character arc. Also the English dub adds a lot of additional voice lines that just dont exist in the Japanese original. I often felt they were afraid to just have long silences or let a scene sit for effect and had to fill it with people talking in English. Did not work for me personally.

Molybdene

for me it's the brother... the white cloak seems to point towards him

Philipp Roensch

The sweetest series of the week. Amazing amazing older women. This group dynamic is really just the best and most wholesome.

Ogami

Its the brother, completely different hairstyle then the son Wirt.

Jacob

My biggest issue with the Japanese dub (and I like both a lot) is this is probably my 5th plus time watching this show with the Japanese dub. And this is probably the 5th time I'm seeing completely different subtitles with different meanings.

Tom Hess

Wanna hear something funny? All the different versions might actually be accurate XD That's how weird Japanese is. Because Simone & George sometimes read the subtitles aloud, I know which version they're reading. And it's one of the best. It's the one where Eisen complains about "Elder abuse" (1x01 - 12:34). It's the one where Stark calls Frieren a "Damn hag!" (1x06 - 9:29). S&G's subtitles are more literal. They stick closer to the Japanese dialogue. They try to respect the Japanese sentence structure. Also they use proper German names for the spells (Varterie, Erfasen, Solltrag vs Bluterei, Erfassen, Zoltraak). The subtitles for the uncovered version (Netflix?) are a good compromise. They mess with the sentence structure and they move away from the Japanese dialogue. But they do a good job of capturing the intent. The subtitles based on the English dub should be avoided at all costs. Japanese is a notoriously difficult language to translate. It requires creativity. 2 examples from the show: ----- 1x09 - 17:57 : Lügner tells Linie to stop playing with Stark, finish him off and come help him. Then Linie says: Japanese: "Nandayo, wagamama dana. Koitsu bosen ippode shitsukoin dayo" My interpretation: "What now? He [Lügner] is so selfish. But this guy won't do anything except play defense" S&G version: "Really? He says that now? This guy won't stop playing defense, though" Netflix/uncovered: "Honestly, how selfish. He's refusing to do anything but fight defensively" English dub: "The human wants to deny me my fun. He's refusing to do anything but defend himself" S&G's version is the only one that clearly conveys that she's complaining about Lügner. Which she is. ----- 1x09 - 20:35 : Eisen to Stark during training: Japanese: "Daga, omae wa mada makete inai *pause* Tachiagatta karana" My interpretation: "However, you haven't lost yet *pause* And that's because you stood back up" S&G version: "But you haven't lost yet *pause* You got up, after all" Netflix/uncovered: "But you got back up *pause* That means you haven't lost yet" English dub: "Look at you, you're back on your feet aren't you? *pause* You haven't lost yet" S&G's version is the only one that tries to maintain the original Japanese sentence structure, even though it's a bit clumsy when ported to English. ----- TLDR: try to get the version that Simone and George are watching. The "elder abuse / damn hag" version.

Westerschwelle

I don't see the inherent value in preserving sentence structure. The most important thing is to preserve the speakers characterization and convey the correct meaning, preferably including connotations.

Wildstar

Oh man I love it, I think it is perfect for Frieren imo lol

Tom Hess

@Westerschelle: I don't disagree with your sentiment in general. But sometimes the screenwriters will put the key information (the one you're supposed to react to) at the end of a sentence. So I think preserving the structure makes sense in "some" cases. Random example: "Omae no chichi o koroshita no wa [long pause] ore da" Literally: "The one who killed your father [long pause] was me" I wouldn't want to translate it as: "I was the one [long pause] who killed your father" Even if it sounds more natural / less clumsy.

unded

Honestly I think it plays better with western audiences in general. Rather than having to go in depth about oh shes a 1000 year old child, its just an adult woman with childish tendencies. It loses some of the nuance of the character but i found it a godsend when sharing the show with normal friends and family

gfixler

I had a Stark/Shtark moment. My mom owned a gift shop all through my childhood, and sold Steiff teddy bears. We always said it like it's spelled. Flash forward maybe 35 years, and my smartest friend mentioned them, and said "Shteiff", and he's always right about everything. I knew he was saying it correctly the second he said it, and that we'd all been wrong at mom's shop for 15 years, but still, I was like "Nope. Steiff. I'm gonna keep saying Steiff."

He's a gerontophile.

The Real Andrew Kim

I didn't see anyone else comment this, but the comment George made about the dub being the right translation cuz it matches doesn't seem to track. Since When I watched the subbed version I got confused about the itchy soul comment which was not showing up in the japanese dub subtitles. So i checked that scene in the dub ver and I confirmed the subtitles are different between the sub and dub. Im assuming when you watch the dub ver it gives you a transcription of the dub and not a translation of the japanese.
