Hatty Time

As a reminder, Frieren has already mentioned she lost 11 times to Demons, Elves, and Humans that have less mana then herself.

Degenerick

Denken said “i may be out of mana but IM NOT OUT OF OPTIONS!”

Thall

I just love Fern. It's like One Punch man. all of them go "BLUTEREI, DtORAGNEIL" and she is like "Consecutive normal magic."

Kev

"Catch These Hands" is a well known cantrip imperial mages fall back on when they're out of mana. 👊 Denken is a higher character level so his cantrip damage is more. Lol

DocteurNS

I mean... I think it's not that you can't go to the northern plateau without BEING a first-class mage. I'm fairly sure it's that you need to be accompanied by one. And Denken probably has enough money to hire someone. So it's either a pride thing or some other reason.

It's implied that Serie has lived for millions of years as she has been around since the earliest eras, so elves may have an indefinite lifespan only death when killed. Frieren is around 1300 years old in comparison. I also think experience may play a factor in elvish aging. As Serie just sits around she doesn't really live extending her lifespan sort of a kind of stasis. That's just a theory though.

Divinerights

For some reason I’m reminded of the Hunter Exam in Hunter x Hunter. A truly fantastic anime I hope yous have the pleasure of watching some day.

06:35 (uncovered) George, if you're referring to the beginning of the flashback, Himmel said "sō ka". Meaning "is that right?" or "is that so?". Not suka/cyka. Unless Heiter put some vodka in his tea :-p

Godrick

Classic meme

Reed James

I never noticed it, but after the flood, Denken caught Richter with his legs to keep him from being swept farther away.

Reed James

Yes. It's more than needing to go north.

Jayson Phillips

This new theme song reminds me of that rap song from the 90's "Hey!!! Must be the money!!"

As for how to pronounce "Serie": The Japanese pronunciation is close to the German one. Something like "Zay - Ree - Ah". If that's confusing, you can put in "serie" in Google Translate, select German as the source language, and play the sound.

Private_pAuLa

To help you out with some of the mages names: Denken means to think Richter is a judge Genau (the guy judging the test) means precise or exact Serie is indeed series Ehre (the mage who got defeated by Fern) means honour Übel (the green haired mage) can be translated to bad, but also evil I can't remember any other names right now, but I am sure others here can further the list

Milosz Skowronski

OK, I saw you discussing why the first class exam has to be so violent and there is an answer, but it's a little bit spoilery, so if you don't want to get mildly spoiled, don't read past this point: If you read between the lines of the conversation between the two proctors: Genau, the guy with the prefect haircut, and Sense, the girl who does not believe in haircuts, the violence in the first class exam has less to do with the nature of the exam itself, and more to do with who the proctor is, and what their philosophy is. The proctors have almost complete freedom in how they conduct examination. Genau has a very "might makes right, cull the weak" philosophy, so for his part of the exam he constructed a cruel battle royale kind of scenario. Many other proctors would probably disagree that this is the right way to test mages (like Sense did), but ultimately they have no say in how the other proctors conduct their examinations. Also, Serie is pronouced [ZEE-ree-eh]. If you need the pronunciation, just type the name in Google translator set to German, and press the speaker button.

Ogami

"Richter" is also very likely a allusion to "Richter Scale" for earthquakes because of his earth based magic powers.

Ogami

Definitely not millions. Its implied in the manga that she is from the "age of mythology", same as the "goddess" that everyone worships nowadays. That age was about 4000 years ago in the Frieren world from where the timeline is now. So she is very old but there are actually hints that Kraft the elven monk is older then her.

Milosz Skowronski

The fact he didn't drown or get crushed getting swept down from the plateau he himself created, tells you he's a powerful mage, so he would've been fine. Denken being there to catch him was a nice narrative touch though. Denken is goated, after all.

Milosz Skowronski

He probably just doesn't want his enemies to know he has a weakness. That's why he prefers to go alone.

The fight with the Demon King was absolutely epic (this is not a spoiler, just me stating my opinion). There is no way Frieren just went in and slapped him down. Remember, she lost to Qual, the Demon who created Zoltrak, and had to presumably depend on Himmel and the rest of the party to help hold him off until she could seal him. I think it is safe to assume that the Demon King was stronger than Qual given the way Demon society seems to work. Also, the reason why they can't keep constantly warm despite having a fire spell, it is a matter of fuel. The fire spell is a momentary flame. Setting fire to a twig isn't going to help keep you warm for very long. And they can't just constantly have a huge flame going using their mana because there is an issue of controlling the fire and not setting something on fire that gets out of control, not to mention the mana costs of keeping a flame spell constantly going. Finding enough fuel to set a fire to stay warm would be possible, but then they'd have to keep finding fuel to keep the fire going, which would be an issue while dealing with the elements and of course would hinder the ability to travel. It would be extremely difficult, maybe impossible for them to keep a mobile fire going since they don't exactly have a mobile oven on wheels they are carrying with them. And without a shelter to insulate them from the constant barrage of a winter storm and to keep the heat contained, the benefits of a fire would also not be huge.

Milosz Skowronski

It's all good when you're up against other mages in a similar situation, but there was one piece of advice I read somewhere, and I forget where I read it, but it's really important: One of the first things you should do as an aspiring mage is work on your stamina. Because once you run out of spells to cast you're just going to be a target that the rest of the party has to protect, so you better learn to pull up your robe, and RUN!

"Why does your mage have 2 levels into fighter?" "Running out of mana doesn't mean running out of options" My GOAT Denken

Reed James

True. Denken is goated.

Honey Hermsen

George, sice you were asking: no, you're not pronouncing Serie's name correctly. In fact you are pronouncing almost all names incorrectly. In Stark's case apparently on purpose.

gfixler

George: "And Serie has just been sitting on that throne for thousands of years?" me: shaking my head at the thought of that, not having gotten up from my computer for most of the day.

Philipp Roensch

Well, the tournament arc was a bit more exposition heavy, and a bit threading in place, but cool. There are unique designs and motivations to go with each character, that makes it worth it. Can't wait to go back on the path again though. I don't think Serie is just sitting on those spells, she contributed and setup this tournament for one, organizing and controlling who should have access to the spells. Now that could still be hoarding, but also curating just how powered the general populace is. Equal opertunity access to all spells would be nice of course, but could also hurt every less powered individual. Afaik, Serie is a necessary barrier of entry. Also here name means: serial or sequence, which kind of fits the order she represents.

Private_pAuLa

See, I never thought of that. Thank you!
