After you finish Frieren I would like to suggest an anime called The Apothecary Diaries. This is also a chill anime similar to Frieren. The anime is not a historical fiction but it is inspired by Imperial China. I personally rate Frieren as my favorite but I consider The Apothecary Diaries as a close second. The Apothecary Diaries also has my favorite anime character.

Hatty Time

I 2nd this. I want to hear George comment on the historical information and explain things to Simone.

After watching Frieren like... 7-8 times by now, alone and through reactors, I can confidently say: The show is.. like a circle or something. The first episodes hit so much harder when you're through season 1 already, seeing Himmel and Heiter and Eisen, but now also knowing them. I totally recommend it, just on your own time!

About the magic system. The way I understand it is that even for Frieren and Fern, some spells are just used, not understood. A perfect example of this is the flying spell. It is originally Demon magic, and the theory behind it is not understood. Zoltrax, on the other hand, while being from the same origin, is understood on a theoretical level, possibly because a grimoire was found. Which is why the version of it used now has been tailor-made to kill demons, and how such efficient defensive magic was created to block it. Also, it was stated that magic in this world is fundamentally based on visualization and belief. So seeing a magic effect and understanding the mental landscape of the caster is a good place to start in order to begin to copy a spell.

A 600 gram steak is considered.... small-ish? My response to that is "holy moly"! As a 110 kg, 191 cm dude, I gladly admit that I usually feel very stuffed after just a 200-300 gram steak. Not complaining though, my steak life is cheaper and easier to sustain :)

Michal

Next Friday cannot come fast enough...

Jose Robles

Very interesting theory about 4 eyes, I mean Land, as you know by now he has always been a copy so what is the copy of a copy on the dungeon

CuyValDar

Another thing about this ubel fight is she specifically got close so her clone couldn't use sorganeil. You saw in her fight against wirbel that she does use ranged magic (albeit a limited range).

Jayson Phillips

Back when Everquest 1st came out you had to make your own maps on paper, or later print out maps, I had soo many binders full of maps lol

Cartoons ReAct

Sooo...nobody else saw the cone of shame? just love pets on it

s0rd3z

I still have the original world map that came with EQ back in 98/99. It's framed by n a box somewhere. They don't make like that anymore though there are some attempts to do so.

Jayson Phillips

I still have mine folded in a box somewhere, but man, those were the good ol days!

this is hideko

About ubel caring for four eyes, in the previous episodes she explained that her power is to take the magic of who ever she emphasize with, she said that she's interested in four eyes copy ability, so she stick with him to analize him emotionally, my theory is that she just using him to get his power, in the labyrinth she said she knew it was a copy of him and tested if he would save her, giving her another notch to empathize with him and steal his copy ability

Alina

I’m wishing for this as well, The Apothecary Diaries is wonderful!

Reed James

Great anime about life in the palace in a quasi Imperial China.

AlixFrost

This, and Dungeon Meshi. They both seem like the kind of anime that's really made for both George and Simone

MR

6 ounces is 170 grams. George probably misspoke because no way you could eat several 600g steaks in a single setting (like Frieren). 72 ounces or 2 kg of steak is a typical challenge for professional eaters.

DanielK

I love Fern getting jealous of Frieren when method hugs her

Honey Hermsen

Please consider watching Azumanga Daioh for something fun, sweet, weird and kinda wholesome. For something with a little romance, I highly recommend The fragrant flower blooms with dignity and My Dress-Up Darling

I feel like Mommy Methode is indeed Sein's perfect woman. If you know a little bit of Japanese, she uses a lot of proper, older-lady-like expressions. Especially the "ara ara" is the tell-tale sign of a woman that is meant to be seen as older and with a fair bit of life experience. Of course this trope has in recent years been broken more than it has been upheld, but still, I think Sein would be into her regardless of her actual age, because I think he's more into the IDEA of an older lady that exists purely in his mind, rather than an actual older lady ;) EDIT: Now that I think about it, Sein was orphaned at a young age. His parents died before he had the chance to form extra-familial relationships, and then he was raised in a pious, virtuous environment under his priestly brother, so there's a good chance he only has an idea of love towards a woman that doesn't distinguish between motherly figure and an object of attraction. Oh my Goddess, it makes so much more sense now! I don't even know how I didn't realise that sooner! Probably because I didn't think about it too much. And also, Mommy Methode is Sein's perfect match, 100%

Milosz Skowronski

Well, I'm sure that is indeed her objective right now, but you know how the Stockholm syndrome goes ;)

Milosz Skowronski

Also why shy used her air-slices on the ground and wall to kick up dust while approaching her.

Milosz Skowronski

Yeah but you probably have sides with it, no? Some potatoes, veggies, salad, maybe a drink? If it was just the steak, you'd probably demolish at least three.

Tom Hess

FYI on the uncovered version, you guys are approximately 1 second behind the video on all 3 episodes. Examples: 19:21 late reactions to the pile of steaks. 54:28 & 59:14 late reactions to the mimic gags. 1:05:36 late reactions to the Frieren clone. 1:29:18 late reactions to the "you smell nice" gag. 1:34:35 late reactions to Edel getting speared. Anyway, thanks for the good content as usual. I'm off to cook a pile of steaks.

Milosz Skowronski

Good call. Though there's still a lot of anime I'd like them to watch, and Apothecary Diaries wouldn't be my first pick, to be honest. They're not an anime-only channel so their anime slots are very limited, so I think something like Violet Evergarden would be a better fit - it's short and sweet and one of the best anime ever made. And it's somewhat similar to Frieren thematically. Plus Evan Call also made the music for it, so it's just a natural progression, lol. Another pick from me would be Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, or Vinland Saga. The writing, characters and themes in both of those are absolutely superb, they're both very cinematic and would fit the flavor of the channel perfectly in my opinion.

Milosz Skowronski

I secretly like to imagine it's the same as someone using generative AI. When generative AIs ingest their own generative content they degrade and devolve to the point of being unusable. I think it's a similar thing - the monster just looks at what it created and goes "nope, that one's useless" :D

Milosz Skowronski

It sounds fun now, because you were young and full of wonder. If you were to do it now you'd probably not bother lol.

dimas aviles

Theres a dnd type anime called Delicious In Dungeon you guys might enjoy.

Milosz Skowronski

True, though there's also an Evan Call scored anime they might also enjoy, called Violet Evergarden. Both are great though, and I'd watch regardless.

Subject entry 4

For George crazy to hot maybe we should get chainsaw man as another choice for series ti watch

Private_pAuLa

To continue with the German name translation: Lawine means avalanche (ice magic) Kanne is a watering can (water magic) Sense means scythe Lecker (the cook in the fancy restaurant) means tasty Wirbel (the guy who borrowed Stark) means whirl Scharf (the mage who entered the dungeon with Wirbel and Ehre) means sharp, as in sharp knife Laufen (the speed demon who is with Denken) means running Methode (the blond lady with Denken) is obviously method, just pronounced slightly different Spiegel (the boss of the dungeon) means mirror Ewig (the sage talked about when explaining Spiegel) means eternal Edel (the hypnosis mage) means nobel or precious Blei (the bald mage) means lead, as in the heavy metal Dünste (the third mage in that group with the amazing mustache) means vapours, haze, or mist, depending on context

s0rd3z

On the contrary, I have played project Gorgon and a bit of stress testing Monsters & Memories. Both are attempts at an old school EverQuest type of MMO and I have thoroughly enjoyed them. It's more a lack of like minded friends and time honestly. And while yes I was young, I was in my 20's and working full time. So it is not really childhood nostalgia for me.

Panda

For the discussions around Ubel. I feel like some related information is from the few episodes prior when frieren used a spell to bind birds on the monster that confused her other teammates, because it was a monster not a bird. It worked because it was older magic that had just had a simpler definition of birds which the mosnter fit into. We also have Richters talk about magic and how visualisation is so important and a mage who controls water cant use your body if they cant visualise the water inside you. I say this related to Ubel because it does already establish that there is some level of instinctual magic that remains even inside the current academic style and is likely more prevalent in older magic like frierens spell where they were less likely to have such advanced academia teaching style or the language had not yet developed to make new words for more specific purposes. this is why old folk magic is so powerful, it was made in more in the intuitive ways of old and in ignorance to the modern concepts that stop it which means it bypasses many of them. An old spell from when birds meant things with wings wouldnt care about the modern definion not including monsters. What we end up with is Ubel who is effectively able to ignore the current teachings because she is running on this (in my theory) much older and more instinctual style of learning magic where all she really requires is her visualisation and her perhaps self imposed requirement of empathising with the caster beforehand.

heronDev3D

Poor little kitty behind Simone struggling with not being able to lick itself clean because of the cone collar 🥲

Bert

Yeah, I was like wtf? 5x600g = 3kg of steak in one sitting? That is not normal dude.

Philipp Roensch

What do you mean episode 22 was relaxed, to me it was high steaks! *badum tis* And another a-MAZE-ing episode right after. Sorry, I will not stop. Love the classic labyrinth lore, with Golems that pass through, mirror rooms and puzzles. Didn't know mimics had a gag reflex. What brings me to, could the Frieren clone not be stopped by a mimic?

gfixler

When George was saying the monster would have to have the power of Frieren to create her duplicate, I had the slightly poetic thought that the mirror-maker doesn't have the power to create all that will be seen in the mirror. You just have to create something that can reflect reality, and let reality create the duplicate, somehow. Then, right at the start of the the next episode, he said they call the monster "Spiegel". That's the German word for "mirror". Okay, now to watch the rest of the last episode this week!

nordquist7516

Hereby nominate Ubel to be referred to just as often as Murder Hottie.
