Mike FromOz

Woohoo! Daylight savings is over in Canada, which means here in Australia I can go back to getting the movies at 8pm instead of 9pm! And what a great movie to watch with you both to celebrate that! Looking forward to seeing this 😁

2026-09-13 17:00 I love this film and I refuse to apologise for it. This film and The Prince & Me, the original. The sequels never happened.

Simone is a "Bones" watcher? Schweet! That's my comfort, always on repeat show.

2026-09-13 17:00 It's a real shame that Michael Caine can't walk anymore.

jmundt33a

Where did this come from?

jmundt33a

That is the appropriate attitude.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Haha been 12am drops for this Aussie ahead of the daylight savings changes coming up. Regardless still fun watching :)

jmundt33a

Heavy bag? Million dollar baby reference?

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

Same and definitely forgot that it ended and thought they posted it early 😂 can’t wait until next moth when ours changes and it becomes 10pm again

Andrew

Simone did a pageant?!? And we're just learning this now?!?

Cc Decc

I'm betting George has been begging to watch it forever, and Simone, kind soul that she is, finally agreed,

OddThomas

The Heat is a good Sandra Bullock movie

jmundt33a

What are you talking about Lloyd?

Godrick

Somehow just feels... wrong. Like Sasquatch doing a photoshoot

OddThomas

I think we can all agree Jaws 4 is the best Michael Caine movie mkay

Christina Doxstader

Michael Caine plays the head of the FBI, yeah, yeah, something like that lol

DonDuracell

Simone was in a beauty pageant?! We need to know a lot more!

Pam Nail

Sandra Bullock has worked less frequently since she won her Oscar in 2010 -- at least partially by choice, I think. But her best known, relatively recent movies are The Heat, Gravity, Ocean's 8, Bird Box, and The Lost City. She's also doing a sequel to Practical Magic, which comes out this year.

Peta D

Sandra Bullock purposefully stepped away from acting due to her partner being diagnosed with ALS and she became his full time carer. He has since passed away and she is starting to act again (she has filmed Practical Magic 2 with Nicole Kidman).

djKENTO

I saw these on a plane to Japan with my dad 20 years ago. We enjoyed them then... we were also drinking the whole time... can we follow this up with The Heat? I remember laughing REAL HARD at that stoned cold sober.

Matthew S

Got to do the heat next. Love that movie

rictus grin

if you haven't seen it you should add Drop Dead Gorgeous to a poll, an amazing black comedy about a beauty pageant

Sumner Hayes

Have to agree with Simone, George nailed that countdown. 10/10, no notes.

Stephanie Bedworth

Simone would love it. George probably would, too, but I think she in particular would.

Divinerights

A truly hilarious film. I can not sing its praises enough

乔治在镜头前放屁。据说!

William Shatner isn’t a great actor? Excuse me? He’s not a subtle method actor, his style is clearly theatrical and kinda larger than life. That does limit his versatility and the kinds of roles he can play, and he very often leans heavily on his charisma and presence. But you don’t build a career in TV, film, and theater that lasts over 70 years if you’re just an "okay" actor. Shatner simply stayed true to the television acting style of the 1960s. While this may appear outdated in productions from the probably 80s, definitely 90s, and later, it should not be mistaken for a lack of skill or talent. Go watch Boston Legal and then judge again. He didn’t win two Emmys for nothing. Just saying! Edit: This concludes my mini-rant. Or, to put it another way... A meticulously elaborated polemic lamenting the profound neglect and willful obtuseness toward the thespian virtuosity incarnated in a visage whose renown commands the loftiest echelons of the dramatic and cinematic arts. ;)

Jonathan Eaton

I loved the reference to Midnight Cowboy (1969) "I'm gliding here!"

djKENTO

this movie has a WILD musical choice... the dance number being Dancing Queen... but it's the A*Teens version which was an all Abba cover band from the early 2000s. Think about that... a band that's literally just a reboot of another band THAT IS STILL ALIVE AND RELEVANT. And they went TRIPLE PLATINUM... a COVER BAND. I don't think that's ever happened before or since...

Kevin Cormier

Should have been a double feature, to be honest. The best non-Christopher Guest mockumentary, hands down.

Polecat21

Love the Bones reference. Being a Buffy/Bones fan, Simone will love this clip from The Crazy Ones (but she's probably already familiar with it). The setup is that Sarah Michelle Gellar's character spent a weekend with a co-worker watching a Bones marathon: https://youtu.be/_UlJPq5bTls?si=NkhHbW6fYKY_Tbrj or search you tube "The Crazy Ones - David Boreanaz"

Polecat21

Agree with "The Heat" recommendation. Two Weeks Notice is a fun Rom-Com with Hugh Grant. 2 of the best actors in the genre. Also for a xmas movie - While You Were Sleeping......

heidismiles

Another reason the pizza looks terrible, is because they have to make it have as little mess as possible. So it probably doesn't have any sauce or anything, and the cheese isn't melty, etc.

Cc Decc

Oh god...I mean I love Sandy B. as a concept and have long since done so many relationship movie nights that I have seen almost everything she's done. While You Were Sleeping might be my favorite romcom. But I found Two Weeks Notice...dire :p

Cc Decc

Some Sandy B's the channel has not yet watched. I'll skip While You Were Sleeping because I am 1,000,001% sure that Simone knows that one well, but more general things: Time to Kill (1996) -- its not Sandy's movie, but she is part of an amazing ensemble cast. Bird Box (2018) -- different horror concept. Successful enough to have inspired sequels. The Lake House (2007) -- George would have to set aside his George brain, but once you accept the premise it does make for an interesting romance/mystery The Blind Side (2009) -- pushed for Oscars yet has become controversial as the object of the story has gotten older and unhappy about it The Vanishing (1993) -- maybe the last thing she did before becoming famous. Small role but...I will say no more. Love Potion #9 (1992) -- quirky cult fantasy/comedy from back before she got famous. I think maybe it became famous because she did. but it is light/goofy fun. Also, I don't think its good, but The Net (1995) is an interesting early experiment for her. Might have been her first big movie after breaking big with Speed/Demolition Man. Was interesting as maybe a first of its kind movie of people being afraid of the impacts of that brand new life changing technology...the internet. Interesting to see the paranoia people had, and compare it to now with AI.

Happy Hanukkah

I can't be bothered to dig up the YouTube videos where Shatner and Christopher Plummer talk about their time ('50s) performing Shakespeare at the Stratford Festival. Shatner played, among others, Mark Antony in Julius Cesar ("Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears") and the title role in Henry V ("We few, we happy few, we band of brothers"). And who can forget: "Watching roaches! Climb! The Walls!" :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDMz5RL-wvM

Happy Hanukkah

Gliding? I request Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995).

Happy Hanukkah

You seem to have forgotten Fire on the Amazon! :-P

Stephanie Bedworth

I think my favorite part of this reaction was Simone’s look of expectant glee when Cheryl was getting ready to describe her perfect date.

Cc Decc

@ Happy Hanukkah ACK!! (I did actually try to watch that once. It was...embarrassing)

Happy Hanukkah

"I don't know what congeniality means." I am congenial, and so are my warts! 'Shatner?!" "Oh, yeah, I forgot!" Shatner will Not! Be! Forgotten! :-)

Snuggelbum

can somebody explain to me why they are reacting to a movie with 41% on Rotten tomatoes? or stuff like sonic the hedgehog move, and other stuff that is very very mid. i don't get it. am i a snob?

blerbaberpaterb

yes. yes you are a snob. for one thing, you assume rating on rotten tomatoes is the decider of good taste. no one decided they are, and even if they are, people can just have fun with things without caring about ratings. not every meal needs to be the healthiest or made by the best chef, sometimes you just want what makes you happy and this movie clearly makes Simone happy to share with her friend. secondly, art doenst need justification. people can just like what they like and dislike what they dislike. but they dont owe you or anyone a "why". because trying to explain why can imply theres a right and wrong in subjective experiences like movies.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Love the subversive casting of this movie. Feminist Icon Candace Bergen as the head of the pageant is perfect.

parker469a

Air America, 9th Gate, and many 90's movies have bad rating but Air America is still a lot fun so I would like them to watch them because they will enjoy them.

parker469a

Sandra Bullock has a very strange filmography. She doesn't have any movies for several years at a time but then has three movie all release in one year. Currently she hasn't had a movie come out for six years but she has four movies that are in development some of which have no name yet. Bullet Train (which you watched three years ago) and The Lost City were the last two movies she had come out back in 2022.

Stephanie Bedworth

For myself, ratings usually have very little bearing on whether I'm gonna enjoy a movie or not, especially critics' ratings. Paul Thomas Anderson's movies usually have very high critics' ratings and the majority of them that I've watched have done absolutely nothing for me. The only one I actually enjoyed watching was Boogie Nights. It doesn't mean I think they're bad movies, they're just not for me. We all watch movies for different reasons, have different things we connect with in them, and different things that speak to us in them. There's nothing wrong with that. While Miss Congeniality does have a fairly low critics' rating on RT, it has a nearly 70% user rating on there, so obviously it's appealed to a lot of people who've watched it.

dys

I definitely remember the popular reception to this at the time being pretty positive. People liked this movie. Rotten Tomatoes barely existed at this point so it's not like people were going there to check if it was good.

Jay Johnson

au contraire. Daylight savings is not over in Canada, but the opposite: it has just begun.

Jay Johnson

if the "perfect date" response amuses you, I suggest looking up Miss South Carolina's "maps" response.

REDR58

The Lost City is supposed to be a lot of fun.

KnittingHaven

I mean, I think the sequel to this one is better than Speed 2, but that's not saying much...

FranciscoGios

So Simone is a second princess and a vampire hunter? Got it 👍

REDR58

I think Shatner is a more than competent and highly entertaining actor.

REDR58

She also adopted 2 children in her 40s.

REDR58

I hope you appreciate all of us who LOST an hour to this time-change nonsense!

REDR58

It doesn't seem that Simone or George is familiar with Candice Bergen, nor her famous role of "Murphy Brown." I tried to find a brief retrospective of that show, but this is the best I could do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX8tRcNQCfE& Needless to say, it was a very popular sitcom in the US that started in 1988 and lasted for 10 seasons, with a brief revival in 2018.

REDR58

This movie was produced by Sandra Bullock. I don't think you guys recognized him, but Benjamin Bratt (FBI Agent Eric Matthews) was in "Demolition Man" along with Sandra Bullock. Ernie Hudson (FBI Assistant Director Harry McDonald) was in "Ghostbusters" as Winston, the 4th member of the Ghostbusters hired later. He was also in The Crow. Shatner and Candice Bergen starred in the TV series “Boston Legal” together, along with main star James Spader. George, “Lamaze” is a technique used in giving birth, you know, “Lamaze classes” and all that: https://lamaze.org I am thoroughly enjoyed the way Sandra Bullock was making herself look really sloppy and messy. She was VERY funny in this movie. I’ve been to San Antonio before and on the Riverwalk there! Did anyone else notice the crossed-out Maple Leaf sign in the back of the TV control room during the pageant? According to the IMDb trivia: "In the control booth at the Miss United States Pageant, a visible sign in the background has a Canadian Maple Leaf in the middle of a red circle with a red slash through it. It's supposed to be an inside joke about how many movies are made in Canada, mostly due to the exchange rate causing lower production costs. This was a first-time watch for me and I thought it was quite good, better than I was expecting.

gfixler

I love whenever CB shows me another thing that's faded out of the collective consciousness, without me having realized it, like Lamaze, which they didn't seem to know about. That was such a staple of sitcoms and standup routines back in the 80s and 90s. I don't know what all was involved in Lamaze, except the idea of "natural childbirth", but there were Lamaze classes for expectant parents, where the woman would sit on the floor, with the man behind her, and she would practice breathing techniques that sounded ridiculous, like "HEE-HEE-HA" or "HEE-HOO! HEE-HOO". The idea was that the mother would remember to do these practiced methods during birth, to ease the pain or whatever. I was 11 when my half-brother was born, and I remember my dad and stepmom going to Lamaze classes. It's enough of a trope to be on Tropedia: https://tropedia.fandom.com/wiki/Lamaze_Class They show that it was in Family Ties, Growing Pains, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Friends (I remember Ross having to go to Lamaze class), Roseanne, Murphy Brown, Reno 911, Malcolm in the Middle, and many more. Murphy Brown is another thing that's faded from the zeitgeist. 10 seasons, 247 episodes, prime time TV, and after about Gen-X, it's completely forgotten. Murphy was played by Candice Bergen, who is also in Miss Congeniality. She was Miss Morningside, Shatner's counterpart. I found it funny that her assistant annoyed her, because there was a series-long running gag on Murphy Brown (who played an investigative journalist and news anchor for a fake CBS newsmagazine, FYI), where personnel kept sending her a new assistant/secretary literally every episode, and she was always like "who are you?" in the middle of running around, trying to get all the other wacky members of the team in order. All of the assistants were quirky or completely nuts in some way, so she always ended up getting rid of them. One of only two who lasted more than one episode was played by Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman). It took me back hearing her yell "Frank!" (the assistant's name), because one of the main characters on Murphy was Frank, and she was always yelling his name. One of the craziest things Murphy Brown did, that I always wanted a series to do, was to get back together way later, as sometimes happens in British TV (like with Doctor Who). Murphy ran from 1988 to 1998, and they got back together for an 11th season of 13 episodes, 20 years later, in 2018. The three biggest co-stars reprized their roles alongside Murphy. I haven't seen it yet; it had mixed reviews. Oh, and speaking of female cops, the 11th season also brought in Tyne Daly, who played one of the two titular female partner cops in the also popular dramatic series, Cagney & Lacey, from 1982 to 1988 (she played Lacey). Oh, and the half brother I mentioned in the first paragraph, who attended Lamaze class in the womb, grew up to be a cop! It's all connected!!!

Mike FromOz

Jay, you're absolutely correct, my mistake. Australia is moving past Summer towards Winter, and the other way around for you folks. REDR58 your sacrifice is well regarded, just so I could have the movies 1 hr earlier here in Western Australia, where we voted out daylight saving as being completely worthless in a place which gets as huge volumes of sunlight as we do.

gfixler

It was actually a very well-known idea in the 80s that we would all want to go watch the movies that the critics (like Siskel & Ebert) DIDN'T like, and avoid the ones they did, because often they were a bit snobby about what was good, and you'd end up watching some ultra-slow art piece that was just super boring and pretentious, while not going to see some awesome thrill-ride, like True Lies, or Return of the Jedi.

gfixler

I learned the word "congenial" from the song "Camelot", from the film of the same name (1967), starring, and sung by, Richard Harris, and Vanessa Redgrave. My mom had the audio cassette tape when I was a little boy, and I loved all the songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0Bp5odIZjQ In short there's simply not A more congenial spot For happily ever-afterring Than here in Camelot

punterjoe

Great watchalong. I think you guys would really enjoy Drop Dead Gorgeous. It seems like your sense of humor. It's darker and more jaded than Miss Congeniality, but I think you would appreciate it.

Juley

It’s a must see!

REDR58

Part of the reason that Murphy Brown has sort of disappeared from popular culture, and the Zeitgeist as you say, is that it is not on streaming in any legal way. Apparently the music rights are quite complicated and only a few seasons were released to DVD and no streaming service seems to have it. This series is being shown in reruns on “Rewind TV” which you have to use over the air antenna to watch: https://rewindtv.com/?keyword=Murphy%20brown I remember watching a YouTube video about it a year or so ago the discussed the music rights problem, but I cannot find that YouTube video now. Although I did find a retrospective that discusses the series. https://youtu.be/FX8tRcNQCfE?si=M48mcgWZOQG0mlrF I never watched the show myself as I simply wasn’t interested in that sort of thing at my age at the time, but I am very aware of the series and what it was about.

jmundt33a

You meant four years.

jmundt33a

Also Premonition and Ocean’s 8. Would have preferred Ocean’s 9 with Emily Blunt joining the crew and Meryl as the adversary to a cashgrab Prada sequel. Loved Lake House. A Time To Kill might be the most important Grisham adaptation. And it’s a rare Schumacher gem. Love Potion #9 is a personal guilty pleasure.

Jose Robles

He also was Bail Organa in Andor

REDR58

I’ve put that recasting out of my head. 😄 (No slight to Bratt, I just didn’t like it)

funky weapon

guilty pleasure movie for me ever since my first girlfriend and I watched it in the summer of 2001. that "you think I'm gorgeous" has been with me ever since. also regarding Shatner: I think he's one of those actors that has a ton of charisma and that's enough to carry him, like Arnold Schwarzenegger. you don't watch him for the performance, you watch him because he's Shatner. the guy has a wonderful sense of comedic timing and has pretty much killed every role he's ever been given. if anything, it's weird to see him portray a serious man like Captain Kirk now that he's been in so many comedic roles. Oh and his music is an acquired taste, but I really liked the record "Has Been." he's also releasing a heavy metal album soon.

Angela D. Mitchell

I always think this is fun, but I was surprised at how easy you guys went on Benjamin Bratt's character, who I think is kind of an ass from beginning to end. Gracie deserves better! A far as The Breakfast Club scene you reference -- while I do hate Claire's makeover of Allison as if she needs making over -- because she's adorable and perfect as she is -- I like the scene a lot more if you just look at the meaning behind it. For me, that scene isn't about Claire trying to make Allison "better" -- it's Claire trying to bond with Allison and make her feel good about herself. If you look beyond the "makeover" aspect, it is Claire trying to show Allison that she's already beautiful. As they say in the scene, Allison asks why Claire is being so nice to her, and Claire says, "Because you're letting me." It's about bonding, not improvement. And Allison did seem to need that. When Allison comes out at the reveal, Brian looks at her with wonder and smiles, and Allison (his new best friend), smiles at him and says "Thank you" silently. His admiration is a gift she needs. And when Andrew sees Allison, I love that he doesn't say she looks "better" or "pretty," he just says "You can see your face" with a look of admiration. Which is lovely. So the Breakfast Club scene really isn't awful at heart, although it's clunky and comes across really badly, especially now.

Marcus Hicks

The least believable part of this film is the idea that Sandra Bullock could ever be remotely "unattractive".

The "nightmare to maintain" club (with all the paint) reminds me of the DNA Lounge, in San Fra cisco. It's a club, founded 40 years ago by Jamie Zawinski, who was a developer on Netscape Navigator. He took the money he made there to open the club. I used to follow him and are the lounge online, 20+ years ago (never been to the club), and they would occasionally host GWAR, who would just destroy the place with all the goo they spew on the crowd. He posted a photo once on the blog of the day after, showing a cleaner, pushing a broom through a lake of GWAR spooge. I think he said they had to shut down the club for a day or two, any time GWAR performed there, just to restore the place. https://www.dnalounge.com/

I actually dated Miss New Jersey[/brag]. Her mom was a teacher at my grade school all throughout my childhood, and then I met her when I switched schools my senior year of high school. We became friends, and I hung out with her and her friends all year, and then we started dating briefly after senior prom. She actually went to prom with my buddy from grade school, but they did not get along at all. We broke up when I went away to college. We didn't want a long distance thing. She did ballet her whole life, and the pageant thing later. I went to see the Miss New Jersey pageant that she won, in Ocean City, New Jersey. There was a dance number with all the girls, many of whom weren't dancers, and she was amazingly better than all of them. I don't know anything about dance, and I'm very objective—if she wasn't good, I wouldn't say this—but she was remarkably better. I was so impressed. Then got to go see her in the Miss America pageant, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Very convenient for me that that's where it's held, only like an hour drive from where we both grew up. She was out in the first round, unfortunately. Note: she was not Sandra Bullock.

Michael Kemmet

Since no one has seemed to address it, here is what Miss Congeniality means and what it REALLY means: The official definition is the pageant participant that best upholds the spirit of the pageant as voted by the other participants. Basically the friendliest girl in the pageant. But that's not really how it's viewed. The REAL definition by the general public is an award given to someone that isn't going to win anything otherwise. The perception is that the pageant participants aren't going to vote for someone who's going to win any of the regular awards. So Miss Congeniality isn't the prettiest or the sexiest or the most talented or the most elegant or the smartest etc. She's the participant that isn't a threat to win in any other way. It's almost an insult to win the award. Now is the public perception the same as how pageant participants ACTUALLY feel about the vote? I have no idea. But it's that perception that the movie makers used in the naming of this film. A similar award in spirit is Mr. Irrelevant in the annual NFL draft(American pro football). It's a nickname given to the very last selection in the draft. They're usually around the 250th to 260th player selected, and they almost never end up having a meaningful career. Only about 1/3 have ever played an NFL game, and about half of those never played a full season's worth. Only about 1 in 10 have what would be considered a decent career, and 1 in 20 have a truly successful career.

China Andronicus

No one but a contestant can be everywhere because only a contestant goes onstage.

11:43 Considering how good looking she is, Simone being in a pageant is not surprising.

Andrew

I have a decent amount of law enforcement experience. She was 100% in the wrong at the beginning of the movie. Yes, morally, she wanted to help the mob boss, which is noble. But in law enforcement, you can't have everyone making decisions based on their own subjective morality. It was extremely dangerous for her to approach armed men because she thought he was choking, in defiance of orders. However, the movie really screws that up by trying to play it both ways (have him actually choking + have them catch the guy any way). It would have been stronger if there was some combination of him faking it + actually killing an agent because of her + getting away. Then I think it would have been more obvious why her boss was so angry at her for people who don't understand law who are judging based on emotion.

Jay Johnson

today is April 25th.... the perfect date
