About the immortality thing, george is correct, an immortal would forget things, A LOT, they would need brains like super computers to remember the days that passed, like us humans, we cant physically remember every seconds of the day because our brain have a limit of storage. It would be impossible for us to remember 86400 seconds of memory, and thats just for ONE day; for immortals, days would be like seconds for humans, they got too many of it to possibly remember

PG Modehouse

Reminder that there's a distinction between monsters and demons. monsters can't speak, they aren't evolved enough, to the level of demons. Monsters aren't organized at all. Demons form the most basic hierarchies (based on mana strength) in order to execute on an organized effort to hunt humans, rather than just park in its territory and eat any that come its way like a monster. EDIT: What makes you think Serie's "hoarding" the first class mages? Maybe they're out wandering the land killing demons and periodically receive summons to directly answer requests? Why else was Wirbel and crew sent back to his homeland in the north? The Continental Magic Association aren't just sitting around twiddling their thumbs, they're out being mages and fighting monsters and demons. It's Frieren who's more lackadaisical here, where demon and monster battles are secondary to her nostalgia trip. Serie is doing more to help humanity than Frieren. EDIT 2: Elves are considered part of humanity. Demons practice Demonic Magic. Human Mages and Elves Mages practice Humanity's magic, which is adapted from Demonic Magic. The exception within Humanity is that Human Priests practice the Goddess's Magic. Methode has the blessing of the Goddess, and carries a Tome so she can practice some basic Goddess's Magic to heal, but she's also a Mage. This is an unusual skillset, making her rather unique.

I like the theory about the Demon King not being the ultimate baddie. With how their potential is being hyped up in the show, could the real final boss be.... a human?

Hatty Time

Hmmm wonder if you guys will watch Invincible with the discussion regarding long life. The show touches upon the idea and isn't the primary focus but is always a relevant topic in the series.

My theory about why our favourite milfen mage is so spicy in season 2: Methodé... is a method mage. In Frieren the characters' names are often straightforward after all. Richter makes the ground shake (Richter scale). Laufen is a fast runner. Stark is strong. Himmel is heaven. Eisen is iron. And Methodé... is a method mage. She was all business during the first-class mage tests. But now we see another kinky side of her. And I'm all for it.

Thanks for the reaction; I love this show. The classic version of humanity for Elves is Elvenkind. I don't think Serie is like Milliarde at all. Serie is aloof, certainly, and her philosophy about how to contribute to knowledge and humanity is antithetical to Frieren's, but she still does things, and is an active force in the world (with, as far as we're shown, periods of downtime and inactivity, the same as can be said of Frieren. Remember she spent at least a few centuries years gathering herbs in a forest.) I'm not sure I'd call either of them bored or depressed, even when we saw them in their downtime stages. Milliarde, meanwhile, is presented as a cautionary tale to other Elves; don't get too caught up in lofty pursuits, don't take yourself too seriously, and don't neglect the world, or else you'll end up a depressed drunk.

AVATAR-X

Small correction: Hajime no Ippo is a Boxing anime, not wrestling. There aren't too many episodes of the anime, considering it is one of the longest running and best selling manga of all time. Serialized since 1989 with more than 1500 chapters and 100 million books sold.

Yup corrected thanks!

I knew your guys' reactions to this show would be great and have loved watching the discussions. I feel like George truely does not understand Serie (or the tsundere archetype) at all as a character and automatically assumes the worst... She does not "Horde first class mages around her", I mean she specifically sent them there on this mission cause she heard of the trouble when she already had them out in the plateau slaying demons anyway. She is actively doing what she can with some of the resources she has. As you eventually said after the last episode of this react "Yeah i guess there likely aren't enough first class mages to post in every village" exactly... That'd be like going "hey why isn't there a super hero in every village". Now something could be said about the testing methods the magic association uses where numerous promising mages are killed just trying to pass the 1st class exam. I do feel like you guys did start to come around on the premise of "oh the northern plateau is basically the lvl 90+ zone with pvp and rampaging enemies turned on so if you go past the walls good luck no respawns".

I don't like AI, but I do love seeing all the Frieren characters IRL. They're so cute. I've had this tab open forever, because you see the Hero of the South, and I didn't want to share any spoilers. There are none left. It's just a film set with Frieren running around for photo ops, with all the characters we know, to the tune of the theme song. It makes me want a live action that looks like this. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/OzSRYizRWxE

George: About people in Frieren living in dangerous places; it's not that I don't agree with your sentiments, but let's not also forget that millions of real people live in potentially dangerous areas. Earthquakes, forest fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. are a regular occurrence in many populated cites. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans, Louisiana killing more than 1000 people and doing over $100 billion in damages. The majority of the coastal city sits below sea level and is considered a major flood risk. Currently, around 350,000 people live in the city, with 1,000,000 in the metropolitan area. Roughly the same number of people live in Yakutsk, Russia - "the coldest city in the world". Winter temperatures regularly hit -40 deg C and have gone as low as -70 deg C. Why do people stay in potentially dangerous regions: history, sentimentality, economic hardships?

luckyopening

Fun little easter egg: One of the guys that are also indebted along side Frieren is the adventurer from s1, who recommended Frieren a good desert place for Ferns birthday, just after the show started, in the city of Warm.

Honestly, I like your discussion here a lot more compared to the more shounen-esque anime. So let me try and throw in some more anime with more mature themes/undertones in the hope that I might some discussions from you about them: First of all, seconding Monster and Steins;Gate from the Poster above me. But also adding Psycho Pass and Black Lagoon to that list. Those are a bit more action-y (especially the latter), but hit also a lot of mature themes.

As for why its only 10 episodes, multiple reasons. This is a show that takes a long time to produce because of the constant high quality. The first season was actually in production for nearly 4! years before it released. Season 2 was released not even 2 years after season 1. Quality takes its time. As an example, Attack on Titan which you recently started took nearly 12 years for the 4 seasons to finish. A waiting time of about 2 years for a 1 cour show ( 10-13 episodes) is pretty normal for the more expensive productions. There is also the point that the Frieren anime has adapted the story with a pretty consistent 2 manga chapters each episde. And after the 10 episodes of Season 2 a huge story arc will start that takes 25+ chapters, so at least a full 12 episodes or so. So they could have made this season 1-2 episodes longer to make it a normal "cour" length but decided to stop before that big story arc. Which will now be the focus of season 3 thats slated to release in October 2027.

Monster would be a great watch. I would love to see them watch OddTaxi as well.

LostLibrarian

OddTaxi is fantastic as well. I just love those others a bit more :D

Ah, yes. Immortality. For this little post I'll go with the literal immortality, not the relative one, where you could die of unnatural causes (explosions, drowning, bullets). As mentioned, it's either the 'forever young' type or the 'aging forever and become a walking skeleton'. So the second is not desireable at all. The first one however, that's a real nasty one. A few points to consider: 1. Could you live forever without close relationships? Or are you prepared to bury your partner, your children, your grandchildren etc? 2. Would you be able to hide your immortality from the rest of the world? Or would you embrace being looked at as a curiousity, even a god-like figure...or an abomination? Most likely a lab rat for people, who are very keen on learning the secret of eternal life and would do unimaginable things to get it. You can't die, so the possibilities of devilish torture methods are endless. 3. Does imortality come with a health insurance? Because it would really suck to be immortal, but your whole life revolves around a hospital bed. 4. You've lived to the point, where humanity evolved/mutated, while you stay like that forever. You'd become the equivalent of a Neanderthal in a Homo Sapiens world. 5. The final and most bleak point: when humanity eventually vanishes, you can't even unalive yourself.
