I knew Simone was gonna be in a toga in the thumbnail.

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

If only John Belushi/Bluto were really a senator, might’ve saved America from Reganomics by blowing the budget on White House ragers

newhastings

A new first: simone DIDNT recognize someone who was in buffy

Jeff K.

Highly recommend the book A Futile and Stupid Gesture, which is about Doug Kenney (who co-wrote both this and Caddyshack) and the founding of National Lampoon (of which he was a co-founder), and talks at length about the making of this movie and Caddyshack, and obviously deals with Kenney's suicide. They also adapted the book into a movie on Netflix starring Will Forte as Kenney. Very good book that gives a lot of insight into what was going on behind the scenes with this movie and Lampoon in general. (Doug Kenney is one of the Delta House brothers in this. He plays the character Stork.)

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Really a trendsetter for a lot of Hollywood comedies to follow! The cache of talent behind and in front of the camera in this movie that would go on to greater heights is stellar! (Amadeus, Blues Brothers, Footloose etc)… Fun fact that Mark Metcalf playing Neidermeyer ended up repeating the character in some “Twisted” music videos before playing The Master in early Buffy

Mastervodo

Pretty sure I saw Kash and Pete in there. The liquor cabinet.

Jeff K.

I had to think way too hard to remember who from this movie was in Buffy before recalling that Neidermeyer was The Master.

Jeff K.

Not to get political but I used to think, "Yeah, that's obviously absurd, no one would ever elect anyone like that to political office" and now... Anyway, I for one welcome our new Senator Blutarski overlords!

Jeff K.

I was guessing it'd be Simone in the famous Belushi pose in the "COLLEGE" crewneck chugging whiskey from the bottle.

SuPaTiLt

Hey, George, did you never watch Futurama? The third or fourth episode is straight up a parody of this movie.

Cartoons ReAct

When they were young Donald Sutherland and Bruce McGill were very similar which is why Simone got confused

Elvenwitch

High schools and colleges in America tend to have ROTC which is kinda like Jr military training. If you do it enough and join the military you start with bonus stripes.

JayF

I see the ROTC issue has been answered but yeah, very common in the US. As for pure comedies it's been a few years but we do have fairly recent ones with Dodgeball, Ted, and Tropic Thunder.

TheCookiesofDiscontent

I'm ashamed to admit just how much this movie influenced my behaviour in college.

Mike W

I think that was a very fair assesment of this movie. "Funny stuff happens then some other stuff happens" 😄

thomas king

The Band Otis Day and the Knights toured Colleges and Bars for years. We had them play one of the Bars at University of Maryland who naturally did a Toga Night theme. The military group was Faber's ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps). It is a college-based program that trains students to become commissioned officers in the U.S. military while earning a degree. ROTC provides significant tuition assistance—often covering 100% of tuition and fees or room and board. This is one of the best comedies of its time. It was made nearly 50 yrs ago and is suppose to take place 64 yrs ago. So as usual some of the humor doesn't align with or goes over the head of your generation.

Roddy Hutchinson

When they are dressed up in uniform that is ROTC , Reserve Officer Training Corps. you train to be a officer in the military while having a normal college experience. They pay for your schooling. in exchange for service after college.

Richard B

Peter Riegert (Boon) plays the crooked assemblyman on the Sopranos.

REDR58

Simone noticed him when he popped up in the new Sopranos episode reactions posted this week.

REDR58

Bruce McGill should be familiar to anyone who watched the “MacGyver” (1985-1992) TV series with Richard Dean Anderson. McGill appeared 18 times in the series as Mac’s friend Jack Dalton, seen here in a fan-made trailer: https://youtu.be/I6BpM8-CjZM?si=k9cNunggIYk5zh9L

Cartoons ReAct

he has, but not as much as The Simpsons...and almost sure he assumed toga parties were a thing not exclusively from Animal House

beefjerkywizard

Keep the Bruce McGill train moving and react to Time Cop!

Monica Alarcon

Recommend after watching this movie: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Killer Klowns from Outer Space...

heidismiles

i was an R.A. in my dorm, and one time we had to break up a MASSIVE toga party. Kegs everywhere, people sliding down bannisters, total chaos! I didn't think that stuff happened in real life 😂

REDR58

Speaking of, the poster artist (for both versions) is Rick Meyerowitz: On his work for the original poster: * * * * * I began work in March 1978. I worked from the photos and from my own experience at Boston University. I had briefly pledged a fraternity that bore a remarkable physical resemblance to the one in the film. The art was due on Wednesday March 29. On March 27 in the afternoon, my wife went into labor. I phoned Matty Simmons the publisher of the Lampoon. I told him that I wouldn’t be able to deliver the art on time because we were delivering a baby. Knowing he wasn’t going to get it on Wednesday, Matty was magnanimous. “That’s great Rick. Take ‘til Thursday,” he told me. My daughter Molly was born Tuesday morning. Somehow in the next few days I managed to get the painting done; I delivered it on Friday, March 31. Belushi was in the office with Matty when I arrived with the art. They both loved it. Others came in just to see it and they loved it too. I thought it would be like a walk off homer – I could go home to the cheers of this crowd – but then John pulled me aside to tell me he wanted his face to be drawn a little more angular so he didn’t look like “such a pig.” I answered, “John, I paint what I see.” “C’mon, look at my profile.” he said, turning his head sideways and raising his chin, “it’s more John Barrymore than some asshole in a cartoon!” I preferred the latter characterization, but I made the change. How could I not? * * * * * And the re-release version: * * * * * Animal House was a huge success; it stayed in theaters for months. It was released overseas and was a hit there too. I have posters from Japan, Italy, and Germany, (where for some reason, the title was translated as “I Think I Got Kicked in the Head by a Horse.”) By the summer of 1979, the movie was no longer in general release. Plans were made to re-release it in autumn for the back-to-school season, and I was asked to do another poster. The headline was “Guess Who’s Back?” I decided to draw a back view of all the Deltas with the rest of the cast, horrified, facing them and out at us. When it was finished, I thought it was a better piece of art than the first poster. In the autumn it was printed and distributed with the movie, but almost never displayed. Theater owners clamored for the first poster; they felt it was the one that moviegoers would want to see. As a result, this pretty damn good piece of art never became as well known as its predecessor. * * * * * https://www.rickmeyerowitz.com/national-lampoon/animal-house/

ChiefKC

Unfortunately with today's society, you can't make these type of movies any longer. No more Animal House, Blazing Saddles, or Caddyshack and so on.

REDR58

I wonder what they would think of "Revenge of the Nerds"?

Happy Hanukkah

And then choose Babylon 5 as the next long TV series! :-)

ChiefKC

My wife went to University of Oregon, which is where the movie was filmed, and said the house was torn down in 1986.

Happy Hanukkah

Not quite a "cultural feedback loop," but that's a good starting point.

TheCookiesofDiscontent

Re the post movie discussion of "Pure Comedies," I think Judd Apatow has killed the pure comedy for comedy's sake. In every one of his movies the main charachter has flaws that make them hysterical but the 2nd half of the movie the character goes on some redemption quest that takes away from the comedy. I won't bring up specific examples b/c i don't know how many of his movies you've watched but keep that in mind next time you watch one of his movies

Jonathan Eaton

For more Ivan Reitman, I suggest Stripes (1981)

Happy Hanukkah

15:40 "because" ... ... ... OMG. H!F!S! I had truly never realized this until you pointed it out. ... Call me Simone. :-)

Andrew

I use to love MacGyver when I was a kid. Remember the ants episode?

Andrew

Never knew what ROTC stood for until today but yeah, it was very common.

OddThomas

Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)

JBK405

The age reveal "13" was actually intended as a 'censor decoy' that wasn't supposed to wind up in the movie: They expected executives to protest and then they could "give in" and change it to 16/17 (I forget what they age was supposed to be). But then nobody actually objected, so it just stayed in there as-is. "Neidermeyer" has entered the pop-culture lexicon as its own term for an arrogant, tin-pot dictator who abuses his authority but doesn't command any respect. There are even references in other movies that take place in or around the Vietnam War where background or side characters can be overheard talking about being the ones to kill him.

REDR58

That’s my favorite term for those clowns!

Stan the Man

Shamalama ding dong is a legit awesome song and I want it played at my funeral

Alexander C Chalk

The spiritual successor to this is "Van Wilder". Starting Ryan Reynolds. It's pretty funny and raunchy. Another older pure comedy that I think you guys would enjoy is "The Burbs" staring Tom Hanks.

Peter K

If you want to see Donald Sutherland in his funniest role, you need to check out Kelly's Heroes. It is a Clint Eastwood World War II/Comedy movie. There are a few war movie comedies, and this is one of the best, it is a pretty big lift to make war funny, but they pull it off. Another to consider is Stalag 17, which inspired a show called Hogan's Heroes. M*A*S*H is worth a look too, not the TV series, there was a movie first, and it is hilarious.

Jeff K.

And the actor who plays Otter plays Van’s dad in Van Wilder, which is obviously perfect casting. (Also for George and Simone, if you ever watch Van Wilder, it’s interesting knowing going in that the character was inspired by Bert Kreischer.)

Simone's Coconut Squire

There are plenty of straight comedies. Think The Hangover, Bridesmaids, Game Night, Tag… they just don’t get the attention these days because everything has to be a multibillion dollar blockbuster to get any traction in theaters.

Jeff K.

Oh by the way: Faber is based on Dartmouth. Which means every member of Delta is supposed to be an Ivy League student (essentially, since obviously Faber isn’t a real Ivy, or real in general).

GAB

Sadly, Donald Sutherland passed in 2024.

Maniacalmouse

The main thing I remember about this is, “It’s a zit! Get it?” lol. If you want a great Donald Sutherland comedy movie, I highly recommend MASH. A great movie with a great cast.

Foamy

Just letting Simone know that the Niedermeyer actor played The Master in Buffy and Angel.

GAB

There were comedy movies with a serious message that preceded this one, such as M*A*S*H, an anti-war movie, starring Donald Sutherland directed by Robert Altman. Other examples are Dr. Stranglelove (dir. Stanley Kubrick) and Catch-22 (dir. Mike Nichols). I can't think of a single John Landis comedy that has a message.

Jonathan Eaton

I couldn't help but think of Twisted Sister's music video for 'We're Not Gonna Take It' where they have Niedermeyer yelling at his kid "What is that? A Twisted Sister pin on your uniform!?"

Thomas Yanez

In case y'all didn't catch it, Pinto was played by Tom Hulce, who also played the eponymous lead of "Amadeus".

soapfiction

Agreed. This needs to be seen soon. And make sure you watch the extended cut.

Kinokind

And that's why this movie exists. John Landis was a junior production assistant on Kelly's Heroes, which is how he knew Donald Sutherland.

soapfiction

You're talking about Twisted Sister, and the song is "We're not gonna take it". Neidermeyer was basically Dee Snider's whole inspiration for the song. In fact, if you listen to the song, as it fades out towards the end, he repeats a number of lines from the drill team scene.

soapfiction

John Landis had a great career going in the early 80's thanks to movies like this one, the Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London (1981), and Trading Places (1983). It's just a shame that it was all derailed thanks to the on-set didaster in the Twilight Zone Movie (1982). Though he made other good movies afterwards (like Coming to America), his career never fully recovered.

Kinokind

Kudos to George for knowing Bruce Mcgill! You've already seen him as the sheriff in "My Cousin Vinnie," and he has a role in "Legally Blonde 2" (in case Simone has seen it). This film was written by several writers from National Lampoon magazine, which was an outgrowth of the Harvard Lampoon, both of which were satire. Aside from Landis, the other two writers were the two guys who wouldn't let the kid in front of them at the parade. The brilliant Doug Kenney (RIP) was Stork, who led the marching band astray. Both Harvard alums. The screenplay was based on their reminiscences from college. They had real stories that were not included because they were even more disgusting! During their stay in the real college town (at the University of Oregon), the cast bonded, and even went to a frat party together . . .which then degenerated into a fight between the real frat boys and the movie cast. Ah, youth! I once saw this in a full theater on a college campus. It was like seeing The Rocky Horror with a fully costumed audience. No one was aghast at the parts that would now be considered problematic, because they understood that they contained truths about real student behavior, and that it IS only a comedy movie. BTW, Sarah Holcomb, who played the underage girl, Clorette, is also the Irish waitress in "Caddy Shack." Oh, fun fact: In the scene where Pinto is talking to Clorette in the supermarket checkout, production screwed up. Clorette is at a period appropriate 1960's cash register, but in the reverse shots of Pinto, we can see behind him a 1970's electronic cash register. Oops.

Matt88g

john belushi was 28 when filming animal house, not 40, he was only 33 when he died

Matt O'Keefe

No message needed or wanted.

Matt O'Keefe

Will they know who Burnt Chrysler is?

Matt O'Keefe

I assume Simone would not recognize her as the girl who played the "Irish" girlfriend in Caddyshack.

REDR58

Kelly’s Heroes is one of my favorites.

REDR58

Yes to “The ‘Burbs”!

DJS302

Hello, random question, has Simone or George ever said they would watch any other animated films like An American Tail, The Brave Little Toaster, or The Great Mouse Detective ?

Alexander C Chalk

It's one of my father's favorite movies. Jaws and the Burbs.

Eddy V Ruiz II

My big pet peeve is that all the characters have to evolve and become better people at the end. The Deltas learned nothing and it is glorious. Try and think of a recent comedy where the characters are just as bad at the end as they are at the beginning. Also the numbers at the ends of their names meant they were given a second chance and graduated. John Landis (my favorite director) teamed up with the writers of Airplane for a movie before both called Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), which was the funniest movie I had ever seen when I was 13. It definitely doesnt age well and a lot of the jokes are dated and will go over your heads.

VariantsWatchMovies

For more Karen Allen I recommend Starman. For more Donald Sutherland I recommend Ordinary People.

Eddy V Ruiz II

In the on set disaster scene from Twilight zone it takes place in Nam and one of the soldiers says "I told you guys we shouldn't have shot Lieutenant Neidermeyer!". nice little inside joke

China Andronicus

It also features young Bud Cort, who we sadly just lost earlier this year and who went on to star in Harold and Maude, another film I always highly recommend.

s0rd3z

Fun fact the Grandmas Boy movie poster is a tribute to the poster for this movie. And both produced basically the same reaction. Also Simone thinking Belushi pissin was a sizzling BBQ grill was so very funny to me for some reason.

REDR58

“Despite millions of dollars of research, death continues to be our nation’s number one killer.”

Darth Fatass

National Lampoon's movies are such a guilty pleasure. One of my favorites is National Lampoons Loaded Weapon starring a young Samuel Jackson and few Star trek references.

Kevin Cormier

It's too bad you watched Mallrats first because there was an homage in it that wouldn't have made sense to you at the time.

Anodyne

Loaded Weapon is one I'm waiting for. I alway laugh a lot - it's in Hot Shots II territory. :-)

Sckmnky

May I ask your process of choosing movies to put in the poll? I really wish you'd watch newer movies and shows. I'm struggling to find anything I want to watch with you guys lately .

REDR58

You ought to give some of this older stuff a try. There have been plenty of movies I’ve watched for the first time here along with their reactions that I have never seen or otherwise would have never chosen to watch and I’ve enjoyed many of them.

MacGuffinStuff

And here begins, SIx Degrees of Kevin Bacon, his first movie. I'm not gonna do it, I won't, but just have to note that, the Dean (Outlaw Josey Wales, that right there is already Clint Eastwood and all that downline; also, irrelevant, but he was in Killer Klowns lol that's a fun movie but a dead end, wait, except for, Debbie was in Weird Science and that's a John Hughes movie...). Not to mention Bruce (Not Donald Sutherland) McGill was a character actor in SO many movies, from Wildcats with Woody and Wesley and Goldie, to Collateral with Tom Cruise. NOOOO!!! Okay NO, I'll be up all night. Stopping. Someone should start this shit on YT though, that would be wild.

Dee Aitch

Half surprised that Simone didn't reference the "Peyton Place" music being in Buffy. It is now canon that she struggles getting her own bra off though.

Alex Ch

I would say that we still get them, with the most recent covered on this channel maybe being Game Night, but the last real “era” of comedy was probably the run of Apatow movies (Anchorman, 40 year old virgin.)

FranciscoGios

My High-school had a program called R.O.T.C in which i did join because I thought that being in the Military was my calling. If you join this program in high-school and join the Military after wards it can only help you get paid more and get promoted from a Private to a higher rank as a Sargent faster. If you join R.O.TC in College though is different, because the program is as the title implies Officer Training Corps so it can help you get promoted from a Lieutenant officer to a Captain fast and get better paid from others who don't have expertise in Military principles. And Keifer Sutherland twitted in June 2024 that his father passed so Donald Sutherland is not with us anymore.

REDR58

George, you mentioned not recognizing the name Elmer Bernstein, the composer for this movie. He wrote music for many movies, including several directed by Landis. Of the movies you're watched here, Bernstein wrote music for “Airplane,” “The Blues Brothers,” “An American Werewolf in London,” “Trading Places,” and “Ghostbusters.” He wrote the score for “Gangs of New York” but the work was replaced by a score from Howard Shore. This movie was co-written by Harold Ramis, Egon from “Ghostbusters” and the director of “Groundhog Day." Some of you may recognize that Kent Dorfman is played by the late Stephen Furst, “Vir Cotto” from “Babylon 5.” Notice that Sutherland’s Dave Jennings has a door for a table in his place when the kids go to smoke with him. The business with the dumpster and the wrong answers, they were looking for the spent spool/stencil from a mimeograph machine/spirit duplicator (I’m not sure precisely which one is in the movie, but they are similar copying devices) that was thrown away after being used to produce copies of the (in this case, wrong) answers. Kind of like a spent typewriter ribbon where you can see what was typed, but in the case of a mimeograph machine/spirit duplicator, it’s a larger sheet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdOjjZK0INM Flounder’s brother Fred’s car (with suicide doors) is a 1964 Lincoln Continental which makes it anachronistic as the movie is set in 1962. 1 or 2 other cars are also a little too new.

sb

"Zero.. point zero".

Henkan

Agree, older movies are better than the newest of the new, lately. That being said, I feel there's a lot of North American-specific movies with cult status that just aren't seen as neither good nor classic in the rest of the world. Animal House, Blues Brothers, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Vacation, the Breakfast Club, Field of Dreams, and many more. I just nope out whenever these types of movies pop up - don't get me wrong, I don't dislike people who are fond of them, I'm just pointing out the cultural differences.

John Richards

The movie was largely based on a series of comedic articles in "The National Lampoon' magazine by Doug Kenny - many of the characters from the movie debuted there. For example, while the movie never explains this, "Pinto" got his nickname because he had a large birthmark that extended over part of his penis.

blerbaberpaterb

...... im so happy this post has 69 likes.... please no one ruin it... its too fitting....

blerbaberpaterb

....theyve said before they just take everything recommended to them and put it into a back log..... and then they choose base on what movie gets recommended the most by different people.... so if you want something, suggest it.....

Dwight Scarn

Simone is going to flip out. Doug Neidermeyer the annoying soldier played THE MASTER in BUffy the vampire slayer tv show

Jeff K.

Hahaha oh that's a good one. "Young" Samuel L. Jackson. Oh, you kidder. We all know that he's never been young.

Jeff K.

When it comes to characters never evolving or getting better, the best current example is Always Sunny (obviously, the characters do evolve in certain ways, but they sure as shit don't ever become "better", they remain horrible people throughout, and it's glorious).

Kevin Cormier

Doug Kenney, also appearing in this movie as Stork.

Whodafreak

@George, I know that you mention understanding Futurama episodes better while watching Star Trek episodes. This movie should help you understand more of the jokes in Futurama S2E2, Mars University.

John Zelinka

I thought she was supposed to be Scottish....no?

John Zelinka

Great teamwork!! (Set-up.....knock it out of the park)

rictus grin

he also is in one of simones favourites Buffy as The Master

Darren Harrison

George and Simone - Many universities have ROTC programs. My best friend, when she was an officer in the Air Force, served as the commanding officer of a ROTC program at a university in Arizona as one of her tours of duty.

gfixler

I was surprised they didn't seem to notice him. They're both so good at recognizing people, instantly, and he has such a specific face and smile.

C Perry

Elmer Bernstein also did the score for The Ten Commandments. I always loved that the guy who did Ghostbusters and Trading Places did the score for my favorite biblical movie.

Matt Blanchette

John Vernon, Dean Wormer, was from Regina! :-D

JS in Vegas

Ya I couldn’t believe she didn’t recognize him!!

JCR

Stork was played by the writer of this movie and Caddyshack, Doug Kenny, who was also the co-founder of National Lampoon magazine. It might be worth it to watch the Netflix bio-pic, A Futile and Stupid Gesture, which tells Kenny’s story and provides all the context you need to know about Kenny, this movie and everything else which bears the National Lampoon name, as well as a huge history lesson about Canadian/American sketch comedy from the 70’s-present.

Angela D. Mitchell

Landis deserved for his career not to recover after Twilight Zone and the deaths of Vic Morrow and the two children -- there is footage of him stating he's aware that they "may lose the chopper" and he's okay with it. He's guilty of manslaughter as far as I'm concerned if not worse. He did keep making movies but he didn't deserve to. No movie is worth the loss of a person's life.

Angela D. Mitchell

Peter Riegert is also the sweet-natured oilman in the sleeper classic "Local Hero," and the Pickle Man in "Crossing Delancey." Such a great actor.

Peter K

How bout the movie Reitman did at the same time as Stripes? Most of the Stripes cast spent nights after shooting putting together an animated tribute to a popular adult magazine...Heavy Metal. Cult classic, raunchy, like the magazine, but with a great soundtrack... and very cool hand drawn animation.
