Hurray for Star Trek Day! So I can’t stress this enough. Simone needs to watch Hoppers (2026) from Pixar. As soon as possible. It’s now available to rent/buy at home.

Joel

Happy Star Trek Day!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Back to back eerie episodes with these two. The “go away” scene and Geordie’s holodeck investigation very much creeped out little kid Jakey to nightmares way back in the day haha. Also today’s top laugh from Mr George’s “a lotta women…” Hats off man 😂😂

David Szoke

Hard to believe but they are only just over half way through TNG.

David Szoke

Oh and I think I know the episode sims means. The episode itself is ok.

Data Cable

The ship in "Night Terrors" was intended to be named "Brattain," and that's how it was spelled in various markings and computer displays (most of which were barely if at all legible in SD,) as well as the original broadcast closed captions. However, it was misspelled "Brittain" only once, but in the most prominent location: on the ship's hull.

Alec Zrike

I love describing an episode you hate, not knowing you're about to watch that very episode...

Matt O'Keefe

They did a good job at making Marina Sirtis look haggard in the first episode.

Matt O'Keefe

Two spooky episodes today. The 2nd is more effective at spooking me in my opinion.

Russell Massey

The band REM were formed in 1980, and the medical community named the sleep component after them in homage.

Spacedone

Simone giving the camera the side eye as soon as the morgue scene started cracked me up.

John Rose

George....they never implied that she has power on par with Q....quit thinking that.

Gryff

That implication was clearly made in Q Who (S2E16) and has been discussed by multiple media outlets that dissect the show. Also this is how you use ellipsis...

Gryff

Concerning Wolf 359 (Locutus' slaughter house) Approx. 11,000 souls were lost to a *single* Borg cube.

Dream deprivation is a real thing - I have suffered from it myself. However, it did not make me psychotic as far as I recall. It went away eventually and I also started being able to lucid dream. However, I am no longer able to remember any dreams - even lucid ones - for which I am extremely thankful.

blerbaberpaterb

....the show 100% inferred that Q was hesitant if not a bit afraid of Guinan when they met at the ten forward... quit trying to dictate how they should or should not think....

There is a (mercifully) very rare condition known as "Fatal Familial Insomnia," where a person becomes neurologically incapable of sleeping. Not many medical diagnoses have the word "fatal" in them.

Paul McBryde

Star Trek Day is the one constant in my life, which always I'll always type out in full, instead of "STD is the one constant in my life".

Christian Rennie

The shuttle is too far away for transporters and tractor beam what do we do? If only there was a maneuver to activate a short distance warp to instantly get in range. Oh, wait there is and it is named "The Picard Maneuver". Remember that episode when Riker used the tractor beam to stop the Stargazer from firing on the Enterprise when it did the warp trick? Oh, wait they did it again to evade a torpedo blast when Geordi did it on the fly to fool some Ferrengi. "Computer activate Picard maneuver to close the distance. Data activate tractor beam." Hooray we saved him.

Man. Hands. Manos… Manos: The Hands of Fate? Manos…

GAB

The term and its abbreviation were first coined by Nathaniel Kleitman and Eugene Aserinsky in 1953. Michael Stipe was born in 1960. According to the biographer David Buckley, Stipe selected the band name at random from a dictionary.

Monica Alarcon

R.E.M. was not new at the time, in fact they released their 7th album 6 days before this episode aired... But seriously, R.E.M. sleep was described in 1953.

WayneC

Geordie and Data are the same rank, though Data is senior (promoted to the rank first). So Geordie should say "Sir" or "Commander Data" when speaking to Data. But often it seems like Geordie treats Data as a subordinate. Also, other than Picard and Riker, the crew should call Crusher "Sir"/"Ma'am" or "Commander Crusher", rather than doctor. She is the same rank as Riker, but junior to him.

TalynOne

Guinan said her people were scattered across the galaxy when the Borg invaded. Q can destroy all Borg with the snap of his fingers. They're not the same power level.

GAB

You have an awful lot more Trek to watch before you find out about Guinan's people and some of her prior dealings with Q - even then you might feel no more enlightened. in a Doctor Who TNG crossover comic, she and Picard have dealings with the eleventh Doctor. I think that one can be safely ignored as being canon.

Tales From The Underside .com

I spent 4 nights playing capture the flag in the woods during a "wilderness scout camp". Having barely slept, eating single serving instant coffee to stay awake, I was heavily hallucinating by the last night.

Robert Cooper

The thing about the first episode here that stands out is how all the small parts are played by people who had pretty big careers to be doing one line parts.

REDR58

Also, the ship itself is the same model that was used as the Miranda-class USS Reliant from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan movie.

REDR58

It seems there is an unusual number of guest crew members that have speaking lines here and I *really* like that.

REDR58

Night Terrors John Vickery who plays Andrus Hagan the Betazoid and sole survivor from The Brattain never speaks on screen. I can’t think of another TNG episode where a guest actor has lines but never speaks them on screen, certainly not where the guest star has this much screen time. From Memory Alpha: * * * * * The scenes with Troi "flying" were shot through a whole day of second-unit production, a rarity for TNG. (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 217) Marina Sirtis commented that her requests for more action scenes had backfired; she had to grapple with an intense fear of heights in order to film them. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 158) Sirtis recalled, "The terror on my face was actually real. I was absolutely terrified." (Selected Crew Analysis: Year Four – Crew Profile: Counselor Troi, TNG Season 4 DVD special features) * * * * * You guys may have enjoyed it, but it was not exactly a cast and crew favorite. Also from Memory Alpha: * * * * * As mentioned in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 158, this episode is considered to be one of the weakest of the fourth season and many members of the production staff were unhappy with it. The scenes with Troi "flying" were said to be a "terrible" mistake by Jeri Taylor and Robert Legato described them as "horrible". Jonathan Frakes remarked, "That was a yawner, wasn't it? That was a shitty piece of special effects work when Troi was flying with those cloud[s] around her. That was below our standard." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 217) Marina Sirtis opined, "I liked the storyline of that episode because it was about the dreamworld, and I'm of Greek descent so I totally believe dreams mean something. And not the Freudian thing, all this hocus pocus. So that was another one that I could relate to really strongly. But I did hate the flying." (Selected Crew Analysis: Year Four – Crew Profile: Counselor Troi, TNG Season 4 DVD special features) Rick Berman commented, "The sleep disorder was that our people were not getting enough REM sleep [and] they were all going mad which, in fact, is what would happen. It was all medically accurate, but it was kind of hard to follow and got convoluted. I don't think there was anything very terrifying in it." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 217) Michael Piller concluded, "[I]t was the first show right after Christmas hiatus and I don't think everybody was quite back on their feet yet. As a result, the energy level was way down and the timing was off and the nature of the problem made everybody start reading slowly… The bottom line was that it was no longer a script because they were dream deprived. They were all talking slowly and after a while that gets pretty boring, and the middle of that show sagged and was slow, boring and disappointing." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 217) Director Les Landau blocked this episode out and prefers not to discuss it, for reasons he won't elaborate. It had something to do with Troi floating in space. (The Official Star Trek: The Next Generation Magazine issue 21, p. 45) * * * * * Anyway, I think there is some really nice acting here but the wirework for Troi looks very silly and obvious.

Identity Crisis Potato bread is the tool of the devil. Cheesecake makes me gag. Ah the big sister/little brother relationship with Susanna and Geordi that was never mentioned before and never will be again! Riker asks if Data can “modify an emergency beacon to operate on UV?” UV flashlights are not exactly exotic tools. They don’t keep this sort of gear in stock? You can buy them in hardware stores or Walmart for less than $10! HVAC technicians use them to check for leaks in air-conditioning systems, among many other common uses. Normally this episode is a SKIP for me. I generally dislike episodes where people somehow change (always rapidly) into a different sort of life form. Somehow undergoing such a fundamental change into a different *species* that doesn’t involve magic or intervention from Q would result in death for the individual. This sort of thing is a little too implausible for me and a bit melodramatic in its execution.

Holy Squire

Cold turkey withdrawing from benzos I was awake five nights before I found a doctor who would treat me. I still have terrible anxiety about insomnia.

Thall

My god George, what a line, LOL

Guts

Patrick Stewart simply acting tired is just amazing. I love Worf and Data but Patrick Stewart carries scenes so hard beyond what any other Star Trek character can do. He is the reason TNG is the best.

Cally

Worf is a man by adoption.

Vinnero

Guinan is an El-Aurian, the have a long life span (gaining wisdom and knowledge) and very strong intuition. Though Q is sort of afraid of her, it never dose explain why other then they just have a defiance against them.

Jomero

Sleeping in zero-G does sounds pretty great, other than the constant feeling like you're falling. Because you literally are in constant free-fall. I would assume you get used to it though. But who knows? Maybe those future sequin pillows are even more amazing.

s0rd3z

I always enjoy the little side eye glance at the camera in those situations.

Chrissonator

Dr. Crusher is quite correct, in neuroscience, REM sleep is a critical stage of the sleep cycle where the brain is highly active, and dreaming occurs. Prolonged deprivation of REM sleep can lead to irritability, impaired memory, hallucinations, and even psychosis in extreme cases. While humans can survive without REM sleep for short periods, extended deprivation approaching weeks, can cause severe cognitive and emotional disturbances.

Mister Forbez

Ron Swanson. Such a great character and personal favorite of mine that I use his image for all of my thumbnail photos (also I'm not attractive). Sounds like George has watched Parks and Rec already, so there's little chance of a Cinebinge reaction, but Simone swears up and down that she has watched TNG (multiple times!) and they are watching it, so maybe there's a little bit of hope they will consider P&R at some point (assuming they ever start watching sitcoms).

Ben Schwartz

When did Simone start faking her laughs? It's bizarre.

Thomas Yanez

Y'all must have forgot about the post-Borgification episode where Picard went home, had a mud fight with his brother and then had some wine. Boom, all issues settled, tip top 100% ready to go back to work. Duh.

Thomas Yanez

Regarding Guinan... not sure where I got this idea (book? did she mention it?) but I was always under the impression that she had her own kind of Prime Directive and, for the most part, avoided actively interfering with the goings on, except for spreading around a bit of wisdom now and then.

Marcus Hicks

I will be deeply disappointed if Simone and George don't make a YouTube short of the "I need to come too" scene from Ep.17 😆.

Old School Drew

Sliced apple and brie cheese are wonderful together especially when you melt the brie on it

Chrissonator

That was indeed LeVar in the alien makeup.

Chrissonator

Star Trek Day is September 8th though...

Marcus Hicks

Riker: "Nothing. It just fizzled out". To paraphrase George, "that's something several women have said to me" 🤪

John

Yes, Simone, this is THAT one.

John

I saw Simone's face in the morgue scene, and I knew... she remembers.

Ian Tellam

Lol, yeah. I think George might be putting a bit to much weight in Guinan's 'fight posture' in that scene where she meets Q.

Ian Tellam

LeVar Burton had very limited vision through the visor but he could see well enough to act normally - although he's said it was pretty annoying. I haven't actually seen all the TNG movies, and it's been a long time, but he gets to act without the visor in at least one of them I think.

Alex Macdougall

This is one of those episodes that reminds me things that you see when you are young can leave a big impression. I watched TNG when i was about 8-10 for the first time. All on VHS recorded by my uncle and I'm pretty damn sure TNG is where I gained my love of cosmic horror.

John Miller

You're not winning this George. Peanut butter and cheese is strange.

Lex Kuzma

Regarding sleep deprivation, people have voluntarily stayed awake for up to 11 days and later fully recovered from the effects. Fatal Insomnia is a prion disease that causes people to be unable to sleep, with one documented case lasting 6 months before the person died. So, I'm not sure we know how long it really takes for sleep deprivation alone to kill someone, but it's likely much longer than 10 days. https://neuroscientificallychallenged.com/posts/know-your-brain-fatal-insomnia

Darth Fatass

Where are you..as soon as she said it. I knew it was this episode. 👌

Bruce Woodcock

George, you need to give up this notion that Guinan has Q-level powers. She has some unknown abilities, but it's pretty clear that either she's NOT Q-level, or she just doesn't care about what happens, which doesn't really make sense given her story. Her species was nearly wiped out by the Borg; if she had Q powers you'd think she'd have stopped it. The ONLY reason to think she has some mojo is that when Q first appeared and raised his hand while offering to remove her off the ship, she raised her hands as well in some sort of apparent defense. At MOST it means she has some ability to resist Q; that doesn't mean she can do Q stuff herself. But for all we know it could have just been a species reflex that wouldn't have done squat. You will find out more about Guinan in time, but stop thinking that she's some all-powerful being they keep not using. (Having such a deus ex machina on the crew would make for boring storytelling, to boot.)

All Dressed chips isn't just a Canadian thing specifically. Humpty Dumpty All Dressed are always in my cupboard (though I am a stones throw from the border). Edit: I think humpty dumpty may of been rebranded to old dutch in Canada after it was acquired they are the same thing and it's the HD recipe/flavors. Little fun history for ya if you like that kind of stuff. Originally the company was founded in my home state first making ketchup chips and sour cream chips. All Dressed came later. Company was acquired by a bigger firm in the 80's then later in early 2000's I think it was acquired by a Canadian firm and is now headquartered in I think Manitoba. They have only ever been sold in New England, Quebec and Atlantic Canada regions mostly. Oh and this episodes are okay. Night Terrors was better than I remember. The Where are you line gives me a chuckle though.

s0rd3z

I am from potato country, raised on potato bread and have cheesecake for my birthday every year 😂 On TNG we agree though, Night Terrors was better than I remember but as much as I do like Geordi and grew up with Levar teaching me to read I don't dig that episode all that much.

s0rd3z

So waking up with a hangover and sparkly glitter all over your face has a whole different meaning in the future it appears 😂

My longest lack of sleep was in college, during some deadlines. I was up all night for 2 nights. I think it was something like 60 hours. At one point, I was sitting alone in the student lounge, middle of the third night, and looked at my watch, trying to think of what to do overnight, because I wasn't tired at all. I was wondering how long I was going to be able to keep this up. I looked at my watch again, seconds later, and almost exactly an hour had passed. I thought I'd read it wrong the first time, and I was really confused for a moment, but then realized my neck was a little sore, and my mouth tasted weird, like I'd probably been unconscious, sitting up, probably head tilted back and snoring. So that was the end of that.

Maniacalmouse

You would be surprised what Peanut Butter goes with. In school, one of the best lunches was chili with a PB (no J) sandwich. We would dip the sandwich in the chili and it was great. On a “weird combos I have discovered” note, I was eating BBQ Fritos one day and took a drink of cream soda. It tasted just like frosted Alpha-Bits (similar to Cheerios) cereal.

michael denny

Aprox 11000 star fleet casualties at wolf 359 39 to 40 ships were lost.

George channeling Larry's "I get yelled at when I just lie there" energy from Weekend at Bernie's!

Angzarr

Tart apples and extra sharp cheddar.

Angzarr

And now, the haunting Torgo theme!

John Smith

Wow. I remember hearing about REM sleep back when I was a child, so I'd always assumed it had been known about since forever ago. It seems like it would be an incredibly easy thing to notice.

John Smith

Lt. Com. Remmick did note a casual familiarity among the senior officers when he inspected the Enterprise back in season one (1x19 - Coming of Age). Even he dismissed it as not being a problem. I don't know what you mean by "Geordie treats Data as a subordinate"; but if you're thinking of them in an Engineering context, then Geordie would "situationally" out rank Data by virtue of being "Chief Engineer". I think "Doctor" would be a more appropriate way of addressing Crusher most of the time. Rank isn't always the most relevant aspect of a relationship, even a professional one. Also, as a side note, I'm pretty sure Dr. Crusher is senior to Riker. He was only a Lt. Com. on the Hood (his previous assignment to the Enterprise). I suppose it's possible that Dr. Crusher was also a Lt. Com. before being posted to the Enterprise, but this isn't addressed anywhere in TNG that I recall. Of course, Riker "outranks" Dr. Crusher with regard to the day-to-day operations of the ship (due to his posting as First Officer); but Dr. Crusher "outranks both him and Picard with regard to almost any medical issue on board. Basically what I trying to say with all this is that "rank" is a more nuanced concept than just how many pips an officer gets to wear on their collar or when they got there most recent promotion.

John Smith

With regard to how many people "Locutus" helped kill - it (was?) will be established as about 11,000. Also, at Wolf 359, the Borg destroyed 39 ships - the reason why it wasn't 39,000 people is that most ships aren't as big as the Enterprise. The Enterprise is one of only a handful of Galaxy Class ships in the fleet, the class was only a few years old when the Enterprise was commissioned and sent out to explore.

John Smith

There are eight episodes left in season four, and I think all but one or two of them are quite good.

WayneC

You're right, Crusher may out-rank Riker, but she was shown as Lt Commander in episode 1, but full commander in episode 2. Maybe a mistake in episode 1.

Chris Graham

The Night Terrors episode does give pretty spooky vibes but in the last few years it reminds me of a creepy pasta called the Russian Sleep Experiment, pretty creepy in itself, great couple of episodes!

Man is a gender identity. If Worf identifies as a man, then calling him a man is accurate.
