Amaze Amaze Amaze!

theycallmekev

Amaze Amaze Amaze! Such a fantastic film. Arguably the best film of 2026 so far.

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

Still my #1 movie of the year so far, I was really skeptical how the adaptation would go with all the science and keeping the movie engaging despite sooo much going on in the book. Thankfully I thought it was masterfully handled by Lord and Miller, and in no small part to IMO the best performance of Ryan Goslings career. Utterly fantastic movie, a modern classic

Śéáń

Amaze amaze amaze!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Great to see this come about especially being around for a long time to hear Mr George talk about it over the years. Loved this film and have read the book three times since it came out. Gosling and Ortiz are magic, Lord and Miller nailed it and Daniel Pemberton’s wonderful score I’ve listened to over a dozen times since seeing it on the big screen down here is Aussieland and think the dude’s a massive talent. Also highly recommended is the LEGO set that is a beast haha

Mastervodo

Double feature today!

Amar

I never thought I would find one of my favourite ever movies but I did. I love this film so much!!

Red Dwarf

Yay! Been waiting for this!

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

woop! Looking forward to this. I thought this movie was a pleasant surprise. Though I had read the book several years ago and enjoyed that.

Christian Da Silva

Now check out The Cable Guy with Jim Carrey and you'll understand why this movie was made.

Cinebinge

woops! accidentally set it for today instead of Sunday. oh well, guess it will be a slight early access as a bonus for those who go to the site directly 😅

And a Sunday Punishment :P

Jeff K.

“Welcome to really bad dad jokes.” Simone, I feel personally attacked.

Mastervodo

Please include George saying "Fist my Bump" in a future Songs of Cinebinge!

Josip Buretić

I heard so many good things about this movie, looking forward to watch it with you guys

Amos T Fairchild

Luckily I didn't get around to reading the book first. The movie was great and then the book added so much. I think I would have been disappointed with what they cut out if I read the book first.

Tinfoilnation

Ya'll fans of Useless Trivia? "Hail Mary, full of Grace" <--- yea, I've read the book and saw the movie twice - and it wasn't until my 2nd watching of the film that this clicked for me and my tiny human brain. Speaking of the book, poor Rocky had been stuck there trying to find a solution on his own for over 40 years - longer than Grace had been alive at that point. He's a mechanical engineer though not a biologist, so he couldn't figure it out. :( The voice of Rocky is set up in the very first flashback scene. The clip he watches on his phone of the results of the probe passing through the Petrova Line. The journalist interviewing the scientist is Rocky's voice. Also, it's Rocky's puppeteer. Since he was doing the dialogue during his performance of Rocky and Ryan was playing off that it Just Made Sense to have him do the dialogue too. There's *very* little use of CGI for Rocky - only a tiny handful of scenes required it so most of the time he was a practical effect, either animatronic or puppetry. And finally, not trivia but... "Is not enough" is the most romantic line ever said in a movie. Statement.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Lord and Miller did fantastic work - even borrowing some editing choices from “Harold and Maude” in a few scenes of exposition 🤭 Also gotta shoutout Greig Fraser - best in class Aussie cinematographer working today

Darren Harrison

I hope the science is better than the junk science of “The Martian” which saw a planet with hardly any atmosphere having a dust storm. Sure there are 100 mile winds on Mars but you would hardly ever feel it. It was equated to be about the force of someone blowing on you. Ridley Scott in his audio commentary discussed the inaccuracies and the author has even mentioned them

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

Fraser’s become like Roger Deakins for me, if his name is on a project my interest jumps 400%

Jeff Smith

I read it before the movie came out but I really think either way is perfect, backward compatible in my own opinion lol.

Jeff Smith

It was definitely done to dramatize the film, but mars does experience dust storms. And didn’t really take away from the film in my opinion at least, still one of my favorites. Project Hail Mary definitely has some inaccuracies as well. Better to just sit and enjoy it for what it is, a science fiction movie 😊. “While local dust storms and smaller "dust devils" occur very frequently, roughly once every three Martian years (about 5.5 Earth years), regional storms can merge and cover the entire globe, obscuring surface features from view for weeks or even months.”

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Indeed! The dude’s a master of his craft and can’t wait to see how his career progresses to greater heights

blerbaberpaterb

.....i wouldnt call that whole movie junk science.....the opening scene dramatized yes....but its kind of a requirement to set off the rest of the story...... no more strange than space traveling cells that eats the sun......

newhastings

Was so excited to hear your perspectives on the movie, glad it turned out to be such a good adaptation (wish they kept the Antartica nuke tho) Sandra Hüller (Stratt) is such an amazing actress, if you want to see more of her I highly recommend Anatomy of a Fall, she gives a stellar performance in a legal drama. She’s also going to be on screen with Tom Cruise in his upcoming film Digger from the director of the Revenant and Birdman.

Lloyd Franklin

I was a little disappointed with the film. Not because I didn't like it but because the trailers lead me to believe the film was about something different to what it's actually about.

Lloyd Franklin

You can get the T-Shirt on Amazon for $30.

Thomas Yanez

"I haven't been this happy on a Wednesday for a very long time." Well... that was just f'n adorable. Now I want an infographic of George's peak happiness events by day of the week.

David Rositas

Seen this movie 3 times already with my wife. Looking forward to sharing it with yall!

AzraRillian

Something I'd like to recommend as a bonus to the movie, and which I think either Simone or George would enjoy, is a series of videos that was recently released by the youtube channel "Four Keys Book Arts". The channel is all about bookbinding and restoring old books, and last month he released a bunch of videos where he got a request from Andy Weir to rebind his 3 books with custom leather binding. If you like arts and crafts and people nerding out about specific topics, it's a great watch.

Jeff K.

I feel like I should re-read the book. I listened to the audiobook on a three day, cross country drive, and I didn't love it nearly as much as I'd hoped. In particular, I didn't love the ending, but that was also the part I listened to for the final, like, seven hours of my drive so I was not in the most receptive mood. I also feel like having seen the movie now, I get why the ending happened the way it happened better, so I feel like I'd be a lot more receptive this time. (I really just wanted a little more closure with Earth, which they did fix a bit in the movie, but I'd have still loved getting some sort of scene in the book of his students finding out their teacher who disappeared did so because he was busy saving the universe.)

Florian

Sandra Hüller is a great actress, wanna throw a french movie with her in thr ring, Anatomie d’une chute

Twiska Brand

About the ending. It's the book, Grace is old because he's experienced 30 years in total. 4 years in a coma aboard the Hail Mary to get to Tau Ceti, 5 years awake to get from Tau Ceti to Erid aboard the Hail Mary and around 16 years on Erid waiting for the probs to reach Earth, and for light from Sol to reach Erid, showing that the Sun's luminosity has returned to normal and proving that Earth got the probs and have stopped the astrophage from breading out of control. In the movie's ending, we pick up at least 5 years later because that's how long the journey took the Hail Mary to reach Erid from Tau Cetti. There is no mention of light from Sol reaching Erid, so we only know Grace has experienced 5 years. The movie ending could take place at any point in those 16 years for light from Sol to reach Erid.

Amos T Fairchild

Cool. We can only experience it one way or the other, so it's good to get the other POV.

OfficiallyGames

I would say it's a shame you read it ahead of watching the movie - knowing the movie was coming out so certain moments won't surpise you - However, Books and Movies are totally completely different experiences even 1:1 adaptations, definietly feels like "reading" it for the first time when watching the movie.

Opti_Frog

So... The moral of the story is that it's good to drug people and make them do shit they don't want to do and then let them die in space? 🤪 I love The Martian. Easily in my top 5 sci-fi films ever. Love. Love. Love. But PHM is a frustrating watch for me. It's an okay movie, but not even close to The Martian.

Amelie W

To the inevitable question if you'd picture yourself going on the Hail Mary, I like to say that to love makes us brave, and to be loved makes us strong. It could be easy to say Grace bails from the mission cause there's no one he cares about and then he changes post-Rocky. Yao even tells us "you just need someone to be brave for." But I think Grace's real problem is just his idea of himself as someone who can't handle doing anything important without fucking up. It could be a different movie about him trying to revolutionize molecular biology, making enemies, turning to teach elementary science and that, and then being forced to learn confidence when there's no one else to turn to. But anyway, yeah, I would. I'm in love with humankind, so I can be brave. Plus knowing you'll spend the rest of your life stuck with exactly two other people seems kind of nice. Funny story, aside from Wicked part 1 and 2, the last movie I saw in a theater before this was Barbie. (Ryan Gosling is on a tear am I right.) But it was only just now watching your reaction that I realized at the end, Grace teaches the rock babies about relativity.

Robert Cooper

"once we enter CGI realm" Actually, he's a puppet. There is shockingly little CGI in this.

Ari Ramirez

Common misconception, no he's not, at least not entirely. He's replaced or receives some form of cleanup in almost every shot. There's plenty of CGI.

Shadows of Archonia

I was in a restaurant with my wife and kids after we saw this movie, trying to explain to them, "So in the book, he figures out he's in space by observing the behavior of the gravity and doing a bunch of math." Movie version: There's a window.

Shadows of Archonia

As another book-first reader, I am glad I did it in that order. Movies and books are very different, but in this case the movie is so faithful to the book that it's really just an abridged version of the same story, with the book being the actual "full" story. As such, seeing the movie first would have felt to me like spoiling huge parts of the book rather than the other way around. Very glad to have the movie too, though. They did an incredible job with it.

m

Upfront commentary: if you got the patience, I'd honestly read or listen to the book first. Close the tab and do it first, I am no "original material first"-snob, in fact, I think the pendulum usually swings the other way - but the movie goes second in my book and I don't think it's an unpopular opinion either. Anyway: PHM is a great read, just a really good science-anchored mystery with plenty of plausibility within its constraints. My favorite sci-fi is still the Ender series (Ender's Game alone is such a strong entry into any franchise) and anything Neal Stephenson, plus the Bobiverse series that tends to either really engross people or irk them for the humor... if your personal bar is "great sci-fi premises and incessant Simpsons references," it might very well be one of the best things ever. The latter also shares its audiobook narrator with PHM's in Ray Porter, who really deserves his acclaim as far as I am concerned - although I tend to embrace most voice actors in audiobooks; it's kind of easy to adapt in that medium. Either way, PHM is now basically what Harry Potter used to be for language learning. In writing and audio, it's comprehensible input I enjoy without being awfully easy. I liked the movie, but I am only starting to really warm up upon rewatches. It was a bit frenetic at first, and I would have opted for so many different choices and honestly just turned it into a miniseries, but I also don't have anything to show for my big mouth, so yeah, happy with what we got. I am missing lots of scientific banter, certain scenes, and while understanding marketing I definitely feel like we gave away the huge spoiler to too many folks. Eh, it is what it is. It also did some good doctoring at times, the linguistic aspect was easily the weakest part of the novel in more than half a dozen of different ways... that was weak and tidily tucking away the "meh" research and just not showing us too much of the process to begin with I think worked well here. Nice movie.

Polecat21

my views of book or movie first has switched from when I was younger. (the following are meant to be "in general" comments). Back then it was - the book is always better so the movie would be a little disappointing. I think adaptations have gotten a lot better and now I see it as - read the book first and it will make the movie more enjoyable because you'll know more of the backstory that the movie just does not have time to get into.

RogueRN

It’s a great movie…but, I have to kinda disagree w/ G&S on something. Stratt (as a character, nothing at all against the actress) was a bit too personable compared to the book. One of the things I really liked about her in the book is that you see almost no ‘humanity’ from her until she explains to Grace why she’s sending him on PHM. She’s cold, un-feeling for the rest of the book - but in those few moments before she drugs Grace you find out why: she has to be. Also, I prefer the book ending where we don’t have any info from Earth, just the fact that the sun’s luminosity has returned to normal. But, all that said, the movie was very, very good :)

badonkagonk

"you're getting married you fucker" was a diabolical way to end the episode

Jeff K.

And she was fairly recently nominated for an Oscar for the film Zone of Interest, for another potential watch

Lou Gallucci

Don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but they filmed the Antarctica scenes with the nukes, but they cut it out because the movie was already 2:40. Lord & Miller said in an interview that it was the one scene they cut that they wish they could have kept in.

djKENTO

so I'm guessing the reaction to UP wasn't supposed to be on the site and that's why it stopped working 30 minutes in?

ShōNuff3K

Before YouTube release, use in title: Canadians that read the book react to...

Mike W

looks like i'm a bit of an outlier but i sort of wish i hadn't read the book first. Really like the movie due to the visuals and the music but knowing the story robbed it of any real tension. I've seen a couple of other reactions and when they don't know what's coming it hits much harder.

luckyopening

Sandra Hüller also appears in "Anatomy of a fall" and got an Oscar nomination for it. You should totally watch it! She also appears in "The zone of Interest", which is really good as well.

Thomas Yanez

My top five favorite aliens : - The Thing - The Xenomorph - Yautja - Darmok - Mathilda May's character in "Lifeforce"

Thomas Yanez

I agree, for the most part. I do like humanizing her a little, but I don't like losing the feeling of how brutally efficient she was being and how wide-ranging her power was. Her discussion with Grace at one point where she points out to him, in a relatively casual way, that she expects some rather harsh personal repercussions for the things she had to do to get the mission done, really nailed down (for me) just how hard her job was.

Cinebinge

it was accidentally released a few days early and decided to just keep it up as an unintended early access for those who visits the site directly. though it seems like you found an export error in the sync with version. will be replacing it with a new export soon.

Śéáń

One thing regarding Stratt at the end and what might have happened in the 20ish years between seeing her, she has a neck tattoo, which hints that maybe her fate was similar to how she predicted in the book

djKENTO

While I've got your attention, you've REALLY loved screen writer Drew Goddard's work, from Cloverfield to Cabin in the Woods, to The Martian, to this and season 1 of Daredevil... He's been given the Matrix franchise by the Wachowskis with their blessing because he has a really new fresh idea for the 5th film which he is writing and directing. Would REALLY love to see you guys wrap up the Matrix series, especially The Animatrix. I think that 4th film is going to be re-examined as a pretty great subversive piece of art about corporate pressure to keep IPs going against their creator's wishes. Kinda like how the South Park movie is about the reaction to the South Park movie... He also wrote and directed a VERY good little crime thriller called "Bad Times at the El Royale" with Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm, Cynthia Erivo, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson and Nick Offerman. It makes for a STRONG reaction. Also Simone might like to know that Drew Goddard also wrote like 25 episodes of Buffy, a bunch of it's spin-offAngel and continued a Buffy comic in the 2010s.

Stephanie

I totally agree with you. I wish at least Simone wouldn't have read the book so she could have been surprised by some things and really felt the emotions and the tension.

OddThomas

Sandra Huller is one of my favourite actors. Nobody does deadpan better than her. You should watch 'Toni Erdmann'

Christian Da Silva

Hi George well I guess you guys could do a surprise bonus for sunday watching The Cable Guy... That would be amazing... :)

AVATAR-X

Because George and Simone were talking about The Beatles, I thought I'd recommend... Yesterday (2019) - Not a biopic, more of a rom-com inspired by the music of The Beatles.

Steve Arnold

Simone melting away during the karaoke scene… 🥹 😢😭 George talking all over it… 😤😡🤬

Ari Ramirez

One thing the trivia missed (and me) is that Stratt has a crossed "V" tattoo on her neck at the end of the movie, which is supposedly a french prison tattoo that signifies she got life without parole.

Swede for the table

i was so hyped to see this for the first time with you guys... guess i should not have. Massive immersion breaking with comparing the book all the time, talking about behind the scenes of the movie and general talking through cool moments :'S "i remember you texting me when you had read the chapter where rocky..... " 😑 .... Okay, so thats whats about to happen. great.

funky weapon

I have issues with the book but man, I cannot wait for Jazz Hands.

Philipp Roensch

I have not yet read the book, but could tell this story is even grander. Movies always can take narrative shortcuts, imply so much with just costumes and composition, they mostly use it here to compact explanations. We got so many glorious visuals and the core chemistry is there. Sandra Hüller very good as serious driving force on the mission, Ryan is amazing as both the normal guy and smart enough to do this, Rocky has my heart. The set is amazingly detailed and real, the soundtrack by one of favorites - Daniel Pemberton, all in all movie of the year.

Inkpendude

Since both of you read the book, and I haven't, I feel like I would enjoy the reaction more if I read the book first

Philipp Roensch

Favorite Aliens: "Prawns" from District 9, Rocky from this, Xenomorph, Cephlapods from Arival, The Doctor - Who.

Skyruff Creative

A "like" button is not sufficient. I need an "Amaze!" button. Three of them.

Jose Robles

a bit dissapointed that you knew already about Rocky, but was a good commentary to compere with the book, I will try to get it :)

REDR58

Often the best CGI is the CGI that nobody notices but that is all over the place.

James MacDonald

I decided to do the watch along, but you kept hinting at spoilers. I have no idea why you kept doing that. "We still have to get to [x] part". "I guess Rocky won't have a voice". You even mentioned Rocky before he was introduced. I was so confused. I thought I'd missed some exposition.

REDR58

Things like that in the movie don’t bother me in the slightest as long as the rules of that universe are self consistent. Just pretend it’s a fictional version of Mars. I mean, the whole thing is nonsense anyway. Humans are not going to be setting up shop on Mars for that long anytime soon. If nothing else aside from the radiation and the otherwise hostile environment, the gravity problem will be difficult to solve.

blerbaberpaterb

.....yeah its almost like they have to talk over music for copyright.....theyre both doing different part of the job....but sure.....hate on the one thats trying to keep the channel from being copyright claimed.....

blerbaberpaterb

....why would you watch a reaction video to a movie youve never seen knowing the two of them have read the books before hand.... like theyve talked about that for literal months and states it again at the start of the full length video AND its in the title of the YT edit.... there couldnt be more signs pointing to the fact that they will be talking about the plot before it happens.....

blerbaberpaterb

....to be fair, even if they hadnt read the book, the trailer to the movie straight up shows Rocky.... so they would've known about an alien regardless..... like all those who didnt read the book but saw the trailer....

Anamondaris

Hail Mary full of Grace indeed😂

James MacDonald

Because the movie isn't the book. It's a first time movie reaction. I would expect them to compare after the movie, not talk about spoilers during the movie. Since my POV baffles you for some reason, imagine you've read LoTR and are watching the movies for the first time with a non book reader. Would you make comments about what might be coming up in the movie? "Oh, that's interesting. We haven't met Boromir yet, though." I get you being defensive. I like George and Simone, too. But let's not pretend my expectation of a spoiler-free reaction is outrageous. Also, I went straight to watch with no copy needed. I didn't see the YouTube title, and skipped the intro just to get into the movie.

RumHamEnjoyer

Abbey Road is my all time favorite Album! Also, hearing what George said does make sense and yet it's still wild to me how someone can feel so apathetic toward the music of the Beatles. I'm sure it's true most people first heard and were exposed to their music when they were young, but the brilliance of the Beatles are timeless and can be truly appreciated still to this day regardless of when you first hear it. Apologies for the tangent, I know this is a movie/tv channel but that just got me fired up lol. Great reaction as always. I'd love to hear more of Simone's musical takes or what her favorite musical artists are!

James Wilson

Bad idea to skip the intro knowing they've read the book, because they specifically say they assume anyone watching this has seen the movie and so they're going to talk about the story.

James MacDonald

To be honest, I wasn't even aware it was a book until they mentioned it. So I guess that's on me. I just thought, "New movie everyone loves. Skip the intro and let's get into it." Just bad luck, I guess, as I don't usually skip the intros.

gfixler

Milana Vayntrub—Olesya Ilyukhina—can finally update her acting reel from 14 years ago, which is all her playing dead bodies in TV shows (all her early work was comedy). She has a new one to add! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSIV_g9lUUE Before she was Lily on the AT&T commercials, she was one half of Live Prude Girls, with Stevie Nelson. They had a series that was sort of an inverse of Between Two Ferns, where they sit too close on either side, and act weird around some pretty big name guests, like Bob Odenkirk, and Matt Damon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1kmOtdHcZ0

funky weapon

that was a damn good movie. I think I prefer the movie to the book. Grace in the novel just kind of blabs on and on with the occasional terrible dad joke and the movie is so much more efficient in getting to the real story. granted I'm one of those weirdo knuckledraggers who rates PHM as a decent to good book, but otherwise nothing special. In that light I think the movie takes everything that made the book a good read and cuts the stuff that takes up space without any real narrative benefit. ultimately this was probably the best movie I've seen this year.

Mike Kay

FIST MY BUMP!!!

JBK405

I saw the movie before reading the book, but I was able to follow the story just fine even with the areas they jumped over. I think it's intelligible enough on its own (Even if the book does "fill in" the stuff they cut out). Like everybody else, the one thing I do wish they'd kept in was the Antarctica process. According to The Internet, Ken Leung, who plays Commander Yáo, speaks Cantonese, but not Mandarin. So maybe that's why they chose to dub him over for the brief areas the character spoke Mandarin (Or maybe they DIDN'T dub him over and that's why it doesn't sound great).

Alexander Whitehill

As I understand it, Rocky is mostly a puppet. Yes, I know there is some CGI but I gather it is mostly to add... detail?... to rocky in close ups. The fact that the lead puppeteer has been deemed eligible as an oscar says a lot. I think you guys would enjoy Joe Scott's video from a month or so ago about the science behind Rocky. Andy Weir became a fan of Joe's channel several years ago after Joe did a video about the Martian. Joe interviews him in the video about Rocky. #releasetheshitcut I think you would probably both enjoy a lot of Joe Scott's videos.

blerbaberpaterb

.....your comparison makes no sense.....in order for that scenario to remotely be comparable to this video..... i would have to tell my viewing companion before hand that that "i will be talking about the story in the books through out" and him agreeing to stay afterwards, then complain about it.....also, thats a situation between 2 people, i only have to concern about 1 person..... theyre putting out videos for thousands to watch.....expecting the watchers to have either seen the movie or read the book or both.....as they stated at the start of the video, that you skipped.....so yeah, the faults on you......

Major Peril

I liked her in Werewolves Within (2021), a somewhat different role for her. Definitely an underrated actress.

James MacDonald

The whole point of first time reactions, as I see it, is that it's like watching a movie with friends. Now you can say it's just bad luck I didn't watch the intro. I fully accept that. But please stop pretending that it's unreasonable for me to expect a spoiler-free first time reaction. If you really think only people who have seen the movie or read the book will watch this, you are 100 percent wrong. And please park the attitude. You're being obnoxious for absolutely no reason.

blerbaberpaterb

.....yeah.. it IS unreasonable to expect a spoiler free first time watch AFTER they tell you it will be full of spoilers before hand, they straight up tell you that IN THE VIDEO, its like the first 5 sentences.....at that point, its on you for skipping it.....you cant blame an article for spoiling a movie if the title of the article is "this article contains spoilers" and you chose to ignore it.....

James MacDonald

Not everyone watches intros. What are you struggling with here? I politely expressed disappointment that the reaction contained spoilers. I didn't ignore anything. If I'm watching a full reaction, I just scroll down on the notification and click the "no copy needed" link. I have no idea why you're being so obnoxious and aggressive. Have you considered calming down? You seem determined to turn this into a fight.

James MacDonald

I made the same point. Beware of some lunatic in the comments who thinks you're crazy for expecting the reaction to be spoiler-free.

blerbaberpaterb

......have you considered taking responsibility and not blaming others for your own screw up.....?......like those people who tries to sue cause they ignore the "dont microwave metal" sign then wonder why their microwave exploded......

blerbaberpaterb

.....they literally tell you at the start of the video that they will be talking about the books......

Matt Blanchette

Does Simone ever comment in that account? :-P lol

Kelly Pickard

Cc Decc

Hmm...slight logical problem -- you are sending off an experimental last best hope of mankind mission that's desperately time sensitive, and you decide...to send 3 total astronauts with no mission capability redundancy?

John Smith

Okay... so, I do like this book (and sort of like the movie), but I have a MAJOR problem with it. If they have enough astrophage to fuel the main plot of the story, then why wouldn't they use it to blast the atmosphere off of Venus?!! They know astrophage needs Venus' atmosphere to reproduce, so why the super risky interstellar mission to find out what to do about it? Just deny the astrophage the CO2 on Venus.

Ben Stevens

never thought i'd shed a tear for someone else's pet rock, but here we are. good reaction guys. thanks for this one.

Landon DuVall

As a scientist, I had one technical gripe in the movie... He didn't balance the centrifuge!!! Cmon man! That's basic stuff!! Haha but in all seriousness I loved it and loved the reaction!

Flerb

I watched this for the first time with y'all. If you didn't discuss the "Strat" character I wouldn't have even known her name, and didn't realize who she was other than someone in charge. Must be a massive amount of context to her character in the book that is missing or extremely subtle in the movie.

Michael Kemmet

First off, that would just be impossible. Venus's atmosphere is so dense and hot that basically anything we could currently build that could get deep enough in the atmosphere to do anything would die a quick death. The longest a probe has lasted on the surface of Venus is just over two hours. Plus the amount of energy needed is way beyond what is possible. Remember that astrophage don't create energy, they just store it fantastically well. The power for the trip actually came from covering something like 40% of the Sahara and harvesting all that solar energy for well over a year. The astrophage were just able to store that collected energy at almost E=mc^2 levels of energy density. But none of that would matter. Because even if you managed to magically destroy Venus's atmosphere, all that would happen is the astrophage would use Earth as its breeding ground instead. We've got CO2 in our air as well. Not nearly as much as Venus, but it might still be enough to keep them going. All they do in their life-cycle is choose the closest/easiest source of CO2 available to them. And if Earth doesn't have enough, there's always Mars. It's thin, but it's 95% CO2. Also remember that they can travel 8 light years without dying, so switching from Venus to Earth or Mars would be nothing to them.

Having not read the book, I was a little put off by some of the comedy in this film because I wasn’t really expecting it and for some reason the Rocky design and it’s spider like hand puppet-ish form just didn’t fully land with me. A beautifully made film, no question about it, and Ryan is fantastic, as always, but I’m warming up to it as I watch reactions. I want to go and read the book now but I’ve lost that first read experience of visualizing what Rocky might look like because I’ve seen the film, so I’m not sure I’ll dive into the book either. Sadly I don’t think I’ll be rewatching this movie multiple times like I do so many other sci-fi films that I love, and that makes me sad and I realize it’s all on me. I loved watching it with you guys though, so that’s good enough for me for now.

I just got my Fist My Bump and I Wear this Shirt Periodically in the mail the other day. I wonder how George's fiancé feels following far behind Ryan Gosling in his list of things he is looking forward too...

Michael Kemmet

I'm going to be a contrarian and say that I really, really dislike the movie and wish I hadn't read the book first. I'm also going to say I'm extremely happy many, many other people are loving it and getting such great feelings from it. I'm just not one of them. I hate what the movie did to both Grace and Stratt. For Grace, I was hoping for another Mark Watney: competent, intelligent, with a sense of humor. I wasn't looking for a bumbling idiot most of the time. I thought the humor of The Martian was perfect for this type of story: subdued humor that brings smiles and chuckles, but rarely belly laughs. This movie seemed to go for nothing but belly laughs. It was like watching a Keystone Cops or Three Stooges film for long stretches. And I didn't want Stratt to be humanized. That's one of the things that made her character so interesting to me. She was the contrast to all the other characters that had strong emotions. By humanizing her, they weakened that contrast, in my opinion. All that being said, I know that I'm way more sensitive to these sorts of character changes than almost anyone else. It's one of those things that are like nails on a chalkboard to me. I even have a hard time with Fellowship of the Ring because of the changes made to Sam, Merry & Pippin as well as Aragorn. I also dislike the changes made to the Hail Mary(the ship), but that's a separate issue, and one that probably wouldn't have bothered me as much if not for the character issues. Again, I'm thrilled so many people are loving the movie, but I just had to say this stuff one time to get it off my chest. :)

mogelijk

Yes, at the end of the shot of Stratt, you get a look at her neck and there is a tattoo of a "V" with a line through it. Per both Weir and the Directors, the tattoo is a French prison tattoo; the "V" indicates a life sentence, the line through it means no parole. The thought is that she was let out of prison once the Beetles returned, though that may also be why she was on the ship -- it was a way of having her "incarcerated" while she led the project to save the sun.

Swede for the table

I understood that, but you dont have to say things before they happen still. Also you can still just take the movie in, instead of talking about random stuff while theres intense scenes! Simone is experiencing the movie while george is speculating about stuff. Its a movie reaction… not dvd commentary.

Tales of the Fantastic Podcast

Hail Mary full of Grace. A kind religious reference. I'm sure someone else has mentioned this! Loved the reaction - was really looking forward to it. I don't know how you both didn't go and see this masterpiece in IMAX!

Green Nolan

Of course. Two guys from different planets meet for the first time and feel the need to whip out their clocks and show them off to each other.

MarkyMark

george usually makes it obvious when hes doing it for copyright and this wasnt for that

I liked this movie but did not love it. As someone who has not read the book I am evaluating it purely as a movie. I thought it went too heavy into the comedy and too light on the science. I can't help but compare it to The Martian, where they completely nailed the balance of science and comedy. The comedic elements in this movie took me out of the story at times and I feel like they really glossed over the science significantly and took the "trust me bro" perspective with the audience without really explaining what was going on in the detail that they did in The Martian. Don't get me wrong, this is a well made movie, Gosling is terrific, the creature design and execution on Rocky was perfect, the score and music was great. I get why people love it and it's been so successful but for me, I might watch it again at some point but it won't be a regular rewatch like The Martian.

Robert Cooper

Obviously the running around bits are CGI and stuff like the eating but,but there's plenty of BTS footage. The VFX cleanup for a lot of it was just removing the hydraulic and electrical lines that ran to Rocky. The puppet looks pretty much screen accurate.

It is possible intelligent alien life may have bilateral symmetry along with a lot of other features life has on earth. You can ask AI. Basically, physics and evolution are probably the same throughout the universe. Alien intelligent life could be totally different, but there are plausible reasons to think it could converge on similar themes it did here on earth.

Daniel

First time seeing the movie for me. What really stood out was Yao's line "You have to find someone to be brave for." Can't remember that from the book. And it was fitting Grace's choice in the end.

MST

Guys, am I the only one getting a freeze at 27:58? I am playing "Up" on my Android using a couple of different browsers, same freeze, same time. I think the video is corrupted and has a glitch at that timestamp. It's an easy workaround, just fast forwarding about 10 seconds worked for me and the rest of the movie is fine. Anyway if it's not only me, maybe a reupload of a tested copy would be a good idea.

Alex Hyrule

Unrelated to this post but it caught my attention: new $650 Minas Tirith Lego set coming June 4th. Patreon lego build video perchance per maybe? :p

This movie was incredible. I hadn't read the book and wasn't quite sure what to expect. The scene where Rocky and Grace finally go their separate ways has a song sung in Te Reo Maori and here is the translation if anyone is interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QYPnxwvibw

While the show may have gone off the rails, it's worth pointing out that multiple sources have also stated that Henry Cavill was actually fired from "The Witcher" for being unpleasant to the showrunners and writers of the show (potentially including sexual harassment). My understanding is that the argument that the showrunners did not care about the source material is considered by those who believe this to be the PR spin from his camp, and for what it's worth, Cavill has put his foot in his mouth and done some things completely unrelated to "The Witcher" in ways that do align with the claim that he's kind of a chauvinist dick. (I have no interest in arguing about this with anyone in the replies; all I care about is that the other side of the show's collapse is represented here.) That said, I will also admit that I personally do not think original creators need to be involved nor that adaptations have to be faithful to the source material in any other way than the filmmakers wish to be. When one set of artists is drawing from another set of artists, who knows what parts or elements will be important to them. I know this is a high hurdle for many people to clear, but I think an example will help: think of instances where the source material is larger and richer, or of course when you aren't familiar with the source material. For the former point, I would mention Godzilla. Godzilla, of course, has a 50-year-history, but Godzilla (2014) is an interpretation of Godzilla, and Shin Godzilla (2016) is an interpretation of Godzilla, and Godzilla Minus One (2023) is an interpretation of Godzilla, and even if you don't like one of these or like one better than another, nobody tends to get as picky as they do when one single book turns into one single movie. Alternatively, the Bourne movies are hugely popular on reaction channels, and those are based on books, and I haven't ever encountered anyone who has a serious complaint about how faithful or unfaithful they are to the source material because the movies work in and of themselves (even though I'm sure they're out here, and I might hear from some of them in the replies to this). Or there's the MCU, which certainly attracts a much higher amount of people nitpicking about the source material, but Marvel Comics is kind of both things: massive, massive amounts of history to choose from and an audience that is largely unfamiliar with the source material from a firsthand perspective. There is a place for extremely faithful adaptations, and there is a place for extremely abstract adaptations, as long as what the filmmakers are following is a pure artistic impulse or inspiration. Of course, a vision or take being worthy of being followed doesn't mean the end results will please everyone or anyone; my position is that in principle, artists should be free to take big swings whether they pay off or not. I agree that this movie is very good, but I also think that adaptation is not a one-size-fits-all or even one-size-fits-many scenario, and adherence to the source material doesn't rate very highly for me. (If I had written something, I would be excited to see how much *different* an adaptation would be. I've already written the thing the way I wanted it to be, and nobody could ever take that away from me, so someone else taking it on can have at it!) Also, I wonder if you guys even picked up on the fact that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are the directors of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The LEGO Movie, and the Jump Street films, as well as key producers on the Spider-Verse movies. Big leap for them to go to something more sincere.

Tyler Foster

Yes please to Logan Lucky, Moonstruck, Legend [Director's Cut], Flash Gordon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, City Slickers, and "Barry." Also, if you haven't seen the schedule that went up today, you got your wish on The Menu.

Muppetlord

Had no idea George is getting married! Congrats! And thank you both for the reaction. I read the book just after it released and it's probably my favorite book ever. I don't read a lot though... Still super excited for his next book. Fingers crossed it's not another Artemis. He really has got the "lone person in space" vibe down. I wouldn't mind another. Also, his short story "The Egg" is beautiful. Kurzgesagt has an 8 min video of it on Youtube. Would recommend to anyone.

Christopher Johnson

Yep I had to stop watching. Didn't read the source material or see the movie and couldn't stand this reaction. Just not for me. They spoiled every moment and already anticipated every plot point (obviously I knew that going in but it just ruined it I guess. I'll watch the movie alone and maybe come back to it. Maybe even read the book since it's so highly rated). Also, this movie has NOTHING on Arrival.

Swede for the table

You did the right thing! I should have stopped as well in heinseight 🙃 the movie is too good to get it spoiled while watching

Paul Patine

Now that’s a rewatchable movie.

Joshua Bloom

So, so glad they did this movie! Changed my whole perspective on extraterrestrial life! I've already acquired the book and I'm a couple chapters in!

Z. Mulls

Came to say pretty much this. I'm so glad they were taken by her performance. TONI ERDMANN might not be a good choice for the channel -- it's a slow-burn, two-hour-forty-minute German film with subtitles -- but everyone should find the time to watch it. Hüller is so incredible, her performance just gets better and better until those last two unforgettable scenes. I showed it to a special friend, and told her that we would watch a half-hour of it and could turn it off if she wasn't into it, as the film requires some patience. She was totally locked in, loved the film.

John Suire

Not sure it’s been mentioned, but Grace is probably still his younger age at the end because of time dilation. He’s been travelling close to the speed of light to get to Tau Ceti, and presumably on his way to Epsilon Eridani, so only a few years would seem to have passed for him, whereas everyone on Earth would have experienced time moving faster relative to him.

Mike FromOz

I hadn't seen this yet, so this was great to watch with you both! My top five aliens: 5 - Klaatu from "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951); 4 - "Mars Attacks" martians (1996); 3 - Predator from "Predator" (1987); 2 - The Alien from "Under the Skin" (2013); 1 - Roger from "American Dad" (2005 to present).

Alina

Agreed, they really should!

Alexander Brown

That's the case in the book as well. But in the book, the epilogue takes place quite a while after Grace has been on Erid, I think a few decades, and he walks with a cane because of the more extreme gravity. They're wondering why they didn't do the same time skip here that they did in the book.

Angela D. Mitchell

My top 5 aliens: Arrival, Contact, Galaxy Quest, Close Encounters, Alien/s, ET (okay, 6). Meanwhile: Amaze, amaze, amaze! Loved watching this again with people who loved the story as much as I. We need more stories about space and wonder and science, darn it -- thank you both. I love Rocky's ship design -- I play the cello, and to me it looks like a cathedral turned on its side -- one made of strings you would want to play with a bow. It looks like something that hums. Great book-to-movie adaptations are such a gift. In LOTR, we got Theodred's funeral, the lighting of the beacons, Arwen's race to the Ford. Here, we got Strat's song, Carl's friendship, Rocky and Grace in the "holodeck," Rocky & Grace on Edris, and the final smile from Strat years later on Earth. In addition to Gosling and Sandra Huller (Strat) being perfect, I also loved Lionel Boyce as Carl (y'all should react to The Bear!), Ken Leung as Yao, Milana Vayntrub as Olesya (she's so funny!). And I love Strat even more in the film -- Sandra Huller is amazing. The karaoke scene is a wonderful addition -- everything she can't express and refuses to say is there. I love that we can see even more in the film that she adores Grace, which is why the scene where she tells Grace "I'm not trying to convince you. I'm trying to tell you why I am doing what comes next" is so moving. Their relationship is so important in the film because we can sense that Strat she actually has deep feelings. While I am thrilled she and Grace were never a romantic item (thank you, Andy Weir), there is still a deep platonic friendship there. Same with Rocky and Grace. I'm so thrilled that the core relationship in this film (and book) is not remotely romantic but is still intensely beautiful -- a friendship that causes a timid man to risk his life at last. Speaking of which, I agree so much with you guys on how amazing it is that Grace is not a brave volunteer. It's such a refreshing change from the usual trope. His journey is so rich for that reason. Because it's Rocky and Rocky's own courage that inspires him to be brave. The noises Rocky makes are perfect -- the musical sounds using his body like a stone cello (even his arms "sawing across" his body), the chittering purring sounds (I flat-out sobbed when he was crying out and couldn't wake up Grace during the emergency). And I love the way the score by Daniel Pemberton incorporates Rocky's "stringed instrument" sounds and chords subtly into the themes. I laughed that there were no "meburgers" in the movie. But I get it. But the final shot of his little class so happy and leaping to answer his question was just wonderful. It was just so filled with joy. I cried (again). Thanks for the reaction. Sniffle.

Angela D. Mitchell

But Ryland Grace isn't Mark Watney. He's not remotely that competent in the book or film, he's kind of a mess, and I love that he's such a different character. But I get that you just didn't enjoy it -- I'm bummed on your behalf, since I loved the book and loved the movie even more.

Jay Johnson

watching this reminded me of other Gosling movies I've enjoyed: Lars and the Real Girl, and La La Land.

John Smith

It would not be impossible - you don't have to build anything that goes into Venus' atmosphere, just repeatedly detonate astrophage bombs right next to it. Or constantly heat it up using rocket exhaust (like in the movie, but intentionally). Remember, in the short time that they had to build the ship, they managed to create more than 2 million kilograms of astrophage as fuel for the ship. That's 2 trillion times the amount that blew up the research building those two scientists were in. Given enough time, there's no reason why they couldn't destroy Venus' atmosphere; heck, with energy like that, they should be able to de-orbit the entire planet given a couple decades. As for the astrophage switching to Earth or Mars - the total mass of CO2 on Venus is about 4.5 * 10^20 kg. Mars has about 2.5 * 10^16 kg and Earth has about 3 * 10^15 kg - that's less than 0.01% of the total amount on Venus. Even if we did nothing about Mars or Earth, simply getting rid of the CO2 on Venus would create a huge bottleneck for the astrophage's reproduction process. Alternatively, why not experiment a bit with the astrophage to find out which particular frequency(ies) of CO2 it's attracted to, then build a large orbiting shield to block those particular frequencies? There's lots of things they could've tried closer to home that had much better odds of succeeding.

Max Krause

Yeah imagine watching Fellowship in 2001 with friends who have read LotR and they tell you that Boromir's going to die next. With brand new movies they should expect that not everyone knows what's going to happen, even if they know. Saying "We'll be talking about the book" in the beginning means: "Don't watch our video unless you've read the book"?

blerbaberpaterb

.....yeah again.... thats a 1 to 1 scenario.... and in that scenario you made up, that friend did warn you before starting the movie that he would be doing that.....unlike this video....where S&G literally says, at the very start of the video that they will be doing that..... and they arent watching it with just you alone.....its a video they put out that you chose to watch after hearing them warn you......

It would certainly include: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDcDCZGcZj8 Duh. Very much a me issue: I have great trouble deciding whether Stratt (movie version exclusively) is an utterly humorless character used occasionally for comedic effect, or whether she has a bone dry sense of humor and enjoys effing with people.

FranciscoGios

Hello guys just here to say there is a book character in Star Wars called Geode his also a rock and funny that his also a pilot but he is more a navigator than a pilot but watching your Rocky reminds me of him.

sarCC

You have Ready Or Not 2 and Obsession to look forward to!

Happy Hanukkah

And let's not forget Gorignak from Galaxy Quest.

Matthew Maxon

never seen it. heard the name only. will watch it this weekend, your reactions to mine.

Scott CineRam

Wow, only took two months to get to "on demand" not three! I'm only just now getting to your reaction to Star Trek TNG episode 4:06, and there you are talking about the audiobook. Wild.

REDR58

Unless I missed something in my single watch of this movie for the first time with this reaction, is there anything at all that remotely hints that Stratt was deserving of a prison sentence for what we see *in the movie*? I can get behind that being an Easter Egg for readers of the book (of whom I am not), but there seems to be no suggestion at all in the movie that she is doing anything illegal or criminal.

REDR58

There is entirely too little Milana Vayntrub in this movie.

REDR58

At this point with filmmaking, it seems almost lazy to not get properly-spoken foreign languages in movies like this, particularly when it is not difficult to do in the slightest, ESPECIALLY when it involves a major world language. It's only a few lines, so to do it right. There's no more excuse for not doing it correctly these days in major movies. If the character in question is supposed to speak those lines in his or her native language, filmmakers need to hire an actor who can speak the language, or at the very least get properly-spoken dubbing work.

REDR58

The overriding issue is that the concept of lifeforms, here "astrophages," that can somehow noticeably dim a star, absorb vast amounts of energy and survive in the process is itself is so implausible that it may as well be magic.

REDR58

That's the issue with details in books that aren't in movies that are based on the book. If it isn't in the movie, it may as well not have happened.

REDR58

I largely enjoyed the movie, but it makes me think of when people say Marvel movies are "too quippy." Grace in this movie was nothing but quippy, so much so that it started to become distracting.

REDR58

First time watch for me and I have not read the book. Grace takes a ride on an F/A-18F Super Hornet, the same fighter jets seen in "Top Gun: Maverick," and the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the aircraft carrier he travels to, though it seems the overhead view of the carrier is modified stock footage and no filming was done abroad the ship. I mostly liked the movie but aside from the hand-waved implausibility of astrophages somehow doing what they do (and surviving massive energy transfer) so much that they can dim a star enough to negatively affect life on various planets, the idea that a spacefaring race like Rocky's civilization can somehow build spacecraft that travel at near relativistic speeds without understanding radiation and especially time dilation is utterly absurd. Henri Becquerel discovered radiation in 1896 using material from the Earth itself and Einstein published his first papers on relativity barely 2 years after humans had achieved powered flight and *only* 56 years before the first human rode a rocket to Earth orbit. And we didn't even need to leave the planet to measure the effects of special and general relativity. We can do that by comparing a clock on a satellite orbiting the earth and one on the ground. Those massive issues aside, the movie was pretty good. I still enjoyed "The Martian" more, however.

mhan00

I loved this movie so much, and I am so happy it did the book justice. So many of the choices they made were just so smart for the adaptation to the movie screen too, imo. The only nit pick I had was the removal of the coma gene. Without that, there would have been no reason for them not to have had way more than just two people training for each role, with at least a few backups off site from the others at all times, and thus no reason it would have had to be Grace to go on the trip unwillingly. And in the book Stratt even says straight up, iirc, that a big reason she kept Grace around was because of the gene he had that made him one of the few that could survive the coma technology. The movie made their budding friendship/possible relationship more of a thing to explain why he was around, I think. I am also happy that they cut out the part with Grace yelling that he was going to sabotage the mission if forced; that probably would have been a step too far for movie audiences in terms of his likability. Wonderful movie, and I am so happy that people have been flocking to the theaters to watch it.

D.A.V.E.

Probably too late to comment but I think the final scene is shot where I used to go to the beach as a kid and later. It's called Durdle Door in Dorset England. I've swan under that arch 😊 lovely place.

ravendog101

great movie. hopefully George can become more familiar with them

John Smith

"...but I’m afraid he wouldn’t get it and would just make fun of it." Err, you do realize that "A Hard Day's Night" is a comedy, right? It's supposed to be funny.

ktown64

Of course.

John Smith

They did have a back up crew, but there's a limit to how much stuff they could send on the mission itself. Sending three more people, means sending twice the mass in food, oxygen/water recycling equipment, beds, medicine, etc... That means twice the part of the fuel needed to accelerate those things, and additional fuel to accelerate the extra fuel, etc... Presumably, three people was the most they could get away with, given the time restrictions they had.

charles markovetz

Is it just me or does Ryan Gosling look and act like Sam Rockwell at the end of moon. Just something I noticed.

charles markovetz

Also this is not a replacement for watching the movie on your own then watching there review reaction to it. It is almost like you wanted to be spoiled.

Lacerta

Thank you for waiting until it was available for streaming to watch this, as I feel there are less reactors who have read the source material beforehand. It was great to see your reactions to it and to hear your thoughts about the adaptation - I agree, it was done so well and while there are scenes I wished they could fit in, the tone and emotional beats fit perfectly! Stellar performances from Gosling, Hüller, and Ortiz as lead puppeteer and voice, and the score and cinematography just exceptional.

Funkachute

George doesn’t know The Beatles? Time to react to A Hard Day’s Night then!

Tyler Foster

I would think this was obvious, but it's because they talk about what happened to "The Witcher" in the full-length video here with regard to how adaptations are done, and I felt it was important that both sides in the show's collapse were represented. As previously mentioned, I am not especially interested in which story anyone believes, the point is that there were two rumors coming out of "The Witcher" camp as to why Cavill parted ways with the show. First, and well before he actually left, there was the rumor that he was being a jerk to the showrunner and writers. Later, the other explanation leaked out about Cavill being mad that the writers were taking too many liberties with the source material. Frankly, this strikes me as a weak argument even if it is true, because people doing adaptations should have creative freedom to do whatever they want, not to mention The Witcher has multiple "sources" one could be drawing on in adapting it to TV. To alter the source material may be unpopular among the fans, but it has no moral or ethical value -- it's just a creative choice. Neither of these stories was explicitly offered up in interviews by either the showrunner/writing staff or Cavill, so both interpretations are hearsay -- I don't think Cavill ever explained it at all, and the showrunners later said he was just more interested in pursuing other roles. For me, it seemed important to bring up the rumors about his behavior just because, again, they align with rumors that were following him around years before he joined "The Witcher," and this story that the source material wasn't being respected may not even be true.

Tyler Foster

I mean, again, since Cavill has not actually said that he quit because the showrunners weren't following the lore, that is also a "statement" offered only by "sources." Even if you don't think the rumor that he sucks holds water, the rumor that he quit over source accuracy issues is out there under exactly the same circumstances. What I said is also not misinformation. I stated that there were two stories offered by unidentified sources in the production. That is a fact, and the point of saying that I don't care what anyone else believes. I was presenting the other explanation that is out there for what happened. You may not like the fact that you can tell what I think, but it's the same for you.

Tyler Foster

I will also add that the literal legal standard they are trying to adhere to (fair use) states that their video must be transformative...the primary form of which that reactors rely on is commentary. It literally should be akin to DVD commentary, even if they don't always know anything to spoil in advance.

Tyler Foster

No, I'm saying there are two rumors. One of these rumors is presented in the above video as fact -- George accepts the equally unverified rumor that Cavill quit as the reason the show changed actors. I said that it was not fact and presented the second rumor. These are both incredibly widespread rumors. You keep ignoring the more benign one, but again, proof that it is widespread is *in this video* when George brings it up like it's the confirmed truth. The part of it that I am calling a fact is that *the two rumors exist.* There are two different stories about why he quit or was fired, neither of which came directly from the actual parties but from sources inside the production. I don't know which outlet or publication first published these rumors, but if you look up stories about Cavill leaving "The Witcher," I am certain the reporting will mention one or both of the rumors, that he was either fired or that he quit. Frankly, you don't even need to consider this for very long to understand why this happened: the other fact here is that neither side offered a definite explanation as to why he departed. He offered a generic baton-passing statement on Instagram announcing Hemsworth was taking over, and the showrunners suggested that it seemed like he wanted to do other things. It doesn't take a genius to believe that the internal conflict on a show as popular as "The Witcher" had various people who worked on the show gossiping to the press anonymously. When I say "a source inside the production," I mean that is literally the extent to which both explanations have been reported, which is an incredibly common way of reporting stuff people could get in trouble for revealing all the way back through journalism history. They just watched All the President's Men, which was about this very thing. Anyway, this is the extent to which I want to argue about this. Whether you believe it or not, it is fact that there are two distinct rumors about why Cavill left the show, both of which carry equal levels of reliability as they are both anonymously reported given the sensitive nature of the story. I obviously have a *personal* opinion based on the fact (yes, fact, you can search this story too) that Cavill has come under fire before for sticking his foot in his mouth about subjects like the "MeToo" movement in an interview (criticisms that I think were justified; his comments were stupid). Still, in this case, I am not advocating that what I believe is fact. The only thing that I'm saying is fact here is that there are two rumors about why he quit. I won't be responding further and I stand by everything I said.

Amelie W

How many times have Simone and George brought up the book in other videos before this? I think at least five, but I don't watch everything they do. Two long term fans of a book, whose literal job you're paying them for is to talk over movies, I think you might expect them to compare the movie adaptation to it. Me, I'm just happy they had such positive reactions that gave me impetus to read the book.

Swede for the table

The problem wasnt the comparison, it was that they did ahead of the events. But also, george talking trivial things during powerful parts of the movie. I pay cuz i want to see them REACT to whats happening. Not spoil things or talk about something completely different and not pay attention to the movie.

Amelie W

I'm picturing Grace thinking of that for the first time when he's like 80. "Hail Mary, full of grace. Yeah I should have seen that coming."

Amelie W

Well, that is usually the deal. They do seem to go out of their way to make sure their reactions are virginal. But that is not the case with this particular movie, as they made very clear from the start. Can you say what it is you expected to happen? What it is you want to happen here?

dys

They did ask a while ago when only George had read the book whether George should see the movie and whether Simone should read the book before they both saw the movie. My take was I would like for Simone to stay blind, but it was fine if George saw the movie before they did the reaction since he'd already read the book so at least Simone would still be blind to it. Obviously Simone did end up reading it, and I can't really blame her because it's a really fun book, but personally my interest in the reaction video plummets to near zero when both of them know what is going to happen in the story. Is this the first movie they've done where both of them know the full story of the thing they're reacting to?

Sophie's Walking Stick

Aren't you supposed to see it for the first time on your own so you are supporting the actual creators of the actual movie??? This is a reaction, it's for after you've seen it yourself and you want to re-experience it. It's not supposed to be a substitute for actually supporting the artists.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

For anyone who read the book first, that scene with Stratt singing was one of the best scenes in the whole movie. Added another layer to her already outstanding character. I usually hate characters like hers but given the story and how she's written she was my favorite in the book and movie.

David Martin

The Beatles almost never lets anyone use their songs. The series "Mad Men" used a song, for which they supposedly paid $1 million US. The miniseries "The Vietnam War" used a lot of them, which were used without a fee.

Donna Castellano

Wholly agree. I was struggling to put my finger on why I wasn't a big a fan of this as opposed to The Martian and you hit it on the head.

Darren Harrison

Why would you assume everyone had read the book or seen the movie? I had to stop watching the reaction because you kept spoiling it. I would recommend posting a spoiler warning.

Sam

100% agree on the comedy to science part.

Joey Cruz

Maybe don’t read the book prior to the movie, so we can truly receive your genuine reaction. With Project Hail Mary, you guys were waiting to see the known story unfold on the screen rather than being pleasantry surprised. It may have been too late for George, but Simone could’ve waited to read the book. (If query chosen, please read on Star Trek day, if possible)

Liuzetz

I enjoyed this one so so much. It was surprising how funny it was and I personally love that aspect as the premise is really sad and bleak, so it balances well. Rocky is perfect and Gosling surprised me a lot in this. As someone who have not read the book, I appreciate your comments with the comparison between the way they approach some portions of the story.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Huh, highly underwhelmed with this one after all the hype. I never read the book so shut down the reaction and just watched the movie alone. The way George and Simone were talking about it, I was expecting some ground-breaking, mind-blowing things. What I got was fairly standard SciFi. Cute but tonally a little all over the place, and really nothing particularly innovative. I have to assume there was something wild in the books that didn’t translate to the move?

Simone's Coconut Squire

The spoiler-heavy commentary bothered me to so watched it sans reaction and was underwhelmed. Cute, but not mind-blowing.

Simone's Coconut Squire

I’ll take Obsession over this as the movie of the year. I found it cute but otherwise was kinda disappointed after all the hype from George and Simone.

Well seeing as astrophage is basically Star Trek space-magic, their doesn't really need to be an explanation, it's just a plot device. But for the sake of argument, Venus isn't the only body with CO2 in the solar system, and they could have just migrated to another source. It would have slowed them down, given nowhere has as much, but it wouldn't have been a long term answer.

Ian Tellam

Not really. The book is just a fun, easy read in the vein of The Martian and the movie is a pretty close adaptation.

John Smith

The "long term answer" is that astrophage (if it were real) would be the best thing to ever happen to humanity. It's an almost perfect fuel source that would cause technology to jump forward by centuries. We'd go from being a lowly 0.7 (approx.) level civilization all the way to building Dyson Spheres using the stuff. And if we wanted the Earth to receive a bit more sunlight, we could use the stuff to lift millions of mirrors into Lagrange style orbits, to reflect some of the massive amounts of sunlight that constantly goes to waste. Also, Venus has (by far) the largest total amount of CO2, in the inner solar system at least. It has roughly ten thousand times the amount that Earth and Mars have, combined. The astrophage would have to find their way all the way to Saturn for another significant source (Saturn's atmosphere has roughly the same concentration of CO2 as Earth, but a much larger atmosphere over all), assuming they can even find it. (They navigate by looking for a particular frequency CO2 gives off; but if the CO2 is cold enough, it might not radiate at that frequency at all.)

Gosling carried this movie. I hope you two can continue with his movies, he does so well what each one needs. Lars and the Real Girl is my vote for the next one of his.

Ben from Tenn

Fun watch, but ultimately not my jam. I tried 🤷🏼‍♂️ Enjoyed your enjoyment of it :)

dairyslime

absolutely not. the whole point is that Grace was put in that situation against his will, thats the setup, and the story is about him choosing to take responsibility and risk his life to save humanity. The moral is literally about finding someone worth fighting for and being selfless, not “drug people, force them to do shit, and let them die in space”

Opti_Frog

I would argue it's not a setup, but a reveal. Haven't read the book so i don't know if it was a flashback in writing. Anyway, you think that Stratt did the right thing sending Grace to die in space against his will?
