Lettss goooo!

Michael L.

Hopefully some Samurai Champloo's in the future now

Ihor Krasman

There is japanese in dub section

Krash Koi

I'd like to suggest "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" Comparable to Bebop in terms of writing, animation, and dub quality.

CaracolaMayoi

The roadmap: COWBOW BEBOP-SAMURAI CHAMPLOO-SPACE DANDY

Zen Reacts

ngl though not really into JJK so im gonna miss friday reactions

Kickinthescience

Those animators know what they’re doing with Faye. Certain shots and details new anime today can’t stylize even with better technology

A. French

Hi guys, the dubbed version is the subbed one in the link. Just so you know. Have a great day!

SbE

I hope the next show is either Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex or Death Note. If not, add them to the list (although I'm sure they both already are on it)

Cinebinge

woops, should be good now. may need to refresh page.

Matthew Richson

I need to go through the original movie and SAC since the new manga accurate anime is right around the corner. Only thing is the SAC movie is not easy to find…

Icarius

Almost caught up! I hope you watched through the credits and gave it pause. As a whole: The episodes are called "Sessions", the series plays like an album, each one like a song, a tribute to a different genre. You kept looking for continuity, but that's not quite what it was going for. You see now it was always heading for Spike on those stairs. The series rewards rewatching and you'll see it was foreshadowed many times - go back to Mushroom Samba, Spike is also stuck halfway on the steps, the frog warns him it's the stairway to heaven and he ignores it, marching towards it anyway. Being caught between the past and future, halfway between 2 things, is a reoccurring motif, and many guest characters share it - especially Wen, from Sympathy for the Devil. He also wears a suit, relies on someone older to get around, works the gig economy, is cocky and gets by on talent - and it's the only other episode that ends with Spike saying "Bang". Gren was also between male and female, a 2-part ep halfway through the series, the only other that doesn't end with "The Real Folk Blues" as the camera pans up to the song, after Laughing Bull comments about a fallen warrior. Look at the last shot of part 1, Spike lying on the ground, a shadow cuts him in half. Animals are another reoccurring motif, Jet telling the story about the cats, the cat with different colored eyes from Pierrot Le Fou, and VT's cat Zeros, and then dogs and horses. This series has so many layers, and every time you rewatch it, you will peel back more.

Pastel

Please, you guys gotta watch Samurai Champloo

gfixler

Yay, Keebee Beebeeps!

Marie Montgomery

old, definitely old. I've only seen the old one

Brandon

I said it last week as well, but I'm glad that they gave the show a definitive ending and didn't sequelize and prequelize the hell out of it. I remember being skeptical about the movie, until I found out that it was just an extended episode of the series that takes place before the ending. It turned out to be brilliant. It's an animated film, but the shot composition is very much like a live action movie and it's beautiful. The logical thing to do would have been to make a movie that "fleshes out" Spike's time in the Red Dragons with Vicious and their love triangle with Julia. Another logical thing to do would have been to make the movie about Spike and Jet going after a big bounty, meeting for the first time and teaming up. I'm so grateful that they didn't do either of those things. They kept Bebop pure. Even though they made a movie, they made it in the spirit of the show and didn't cram in a bunch of "lore" and "mythos" to water down what Bebop is. They left us wanting more. I don't blame George and Simone for wanting more, for wanting to know more about Vicious and The Red Dragons etc. But for once, they actually didn't give us more. Speaking only for myself, 99% of the time I regret getting what I want when it comes to movies and TV series. Perfect example: Look at what happened to Stranger Things. I bet if The Godfather were released today, some studio exec would be like "Hey let's make spinoff movies about the Tattaglia family and Don Barzini so we can see what they were doing at the same time as the Corleones!" and they would probably get made.

Icarius

Definitely the original

Zen Reacts

I dont know what to do now is the perfect description of this finale

Data Cable

Now just picture the final scene of Serenity, but with Jet & Faye in place of Mal & River

Daniel Jones

YOU’RE GONNA CARRY THAT WEIGHT.

REDR58

I love the opening credits song and sequence for the movie. It is so delightfully ordinary and almost mundane with the little slices of life. The line in the song, "Earthgirls are easy" is a reference to the 1988 musical comedy film "Earth Girls are Easy" starring Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, and Michael McKean.

REDR58

Watch the series again!

Jeremy Espinoza

Awesome!! I still remember staying up really late to watch these on Toonami. Such a memorable ending. Glad that you all enjoyed the series. Definitely watched Hard-Boiled with Simone on the other channel!

erosennin

Love how George makes sure we know that HE knows that the movie takes place before these episodes and then completely ignores it in all his theories about how the movie is gonna wrap up these stories^^

Lycowolf

If your looking for another one and done series, 'Odd Taxi' is a great single season neo noir anime.

Gilthwixt

Both would be good. 90s for the OG art style, new one for being closer to the Manga

DM DC

You guys should totally watch Samurai Champloo, and Trigun. If you haven't already seen them. Also, if you want something totally goofy and fun, I recommend Rune Soldier.

Gilthwixt

Loved watching this series with you guys. Some trivia I didn't see mentioned: - The opening street sequence for the movie was rotoscoped, and the english voice actors for Spike, Jet & Faye provided the footage for some of the people featured. See if you can guess who's who. - If you pay attention to the parade before Spike and Vincent's fight, you can spot Cowboy Andy in his Samurai outfit atop his horse - This last one is a bit of a fan theory but 99% likely imo. Spike's cybernetic eye doesn't see any prominent use outside of dialogue referencing the different color/seeing the past & present, but I think it has a hidden feature: infrared vision. Close ups of his handgun show a laser sight built into the grip, which is a real but niche device, and yet we never see him using it. An IR laser would make sense as it's not visible to the naked eye and only shows up on infrared cameras/night vision goggles, which would explain why he has insane accuracy while shooting one handed and why nobody ever sees the laser.

findle

All of the music in all of BeBop show and movie was composed by Yoko Kanno, one of the great composers ever. She also did the music for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and SAC: Second Gig. She is known for the seamless mix of pop, jazz, blues, and rock. She formed the band "The Seatbelts" when making the group to record the music for BeBop.

findle

With the same composer for all of the music, Yoko Kanno.

djKENTO

Vincent is Cosmo from Fairly Odd Parents hahaha

L77045

Was going to comment earlier in the review when you asked "why stop after 26 episodes", but knew you'd probably realize when it ended. So nice to have a complete story that leaves you wanting more but still wraps everything up well. Probably won't be one you'd watch soon because a lot less popular, but Wolf's Rain is one of the few that gives me some of this same vibe and that I like even more.

Monica Alarcon

So the guy who voiced the bad guy is also Cosmo from the Fairly Odd parents... He's got range...

Raven Blackrose

To answer a question, yeah, it's an an original soundtrack. Did you see the whole show and assume it was all licensed music????? A lot of the music was pretty darn specific to the situation. Sorry, yes, Yoko Kanno and Seatbelts did pretty much all the music for the movie and the show. couple soundtrack albums, all bangers.

Jobbe Smit

Now it's eventually time for the other scifi procedural in the same universe, Space Dandy.

Jobbe Smit

This, you gotta do Space Dandy eventually, it's so much more than it appears at first glance.

Patrick Waldeck

This is the reason Ed and Ein had to depart...they don't belong in this kind of story. There's no innocence or joy to be found.

DoktorEvil

I always felt that Faye's reluctance to tell Spike about Julia in ep 25 was a sign of her unspoken care for Spike. Could be familial feelings, or romantic, depending on what you think. She kinda knows what this is all going to lead to. But now that she knows what happened in her past, the Bebop is her home now, and potentially losing anyone just HURTS. Director Shinichro Watanabe has said that Spike definitely cares about her, too, but he's just the kind to never show feelings openly. Fun fact- Spike's actor, Steve Blum, has the waveform for Spike's final line ("...Bang.") tattooed on his arm. Orignally, Watanabe said that Spike was dead, but in recent years, he's hedged on that a bit, in interviews. Simone said it best, it's tragic, but it's so earned, and so beautiful. Thanks for watching this. You're Gonna Carry That Weight.

REDR58

A deep dive into the world of Bebop soundtracks and music is a journey into itself.

REDR58

More about Spike's primary handgun, the IMI (Israel Military Industries) Jericho 941 R: "Spike Spiegel's signature pistol is a customized IMI Jericho 941 R chambered in 9x19mm. He has installed custom grips and a frame mounted laser sight on the right side, although we never see him use it. The original Jericho 941 came with two barrels for use with either 9mm or .41AE ammunition. A blued steel rod was intended for the 9mm round with a lighter spring, and a stainless steel rod with heavier springs for the larger load of the .41AE round. Spike's Jericho is chambered in 9mm but features a silver recoil spring. We can assume this was either due to artistic license, or part of the modifications Spike made to the gun. Worth noting that many actual owners of a Jericho 941 chambered in 9mm change the stock rod/recoil spring with an aftermarket chrome kit based on the .41 AE version, to reduce recoil and increase rate of fire." https://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Cowboy_Bebop Edit: the laser sight that Gilthwixt mentions is visible here, roughly centered in the space above the handgrip and trigger and below the slide. It is the irregularly shaped structure with the 2 round attachment points and the laser emanates from the narrower part on the right, with its beam below and parallel to the barrel of the gun: https://www.imfdb.org/wiki/File:Spikeartbookgun.png

Just finished the movie reaction. In Japan it was called 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' instead of just 'The Movie'. I didn't think Bob Dylan or the record company owns the rights to the title itself, but I guess they do. Honestly, Vincent rivals Vicious from the series as a villain in the movie. The way he talks about having died on Titan mirrors the way Spike talks about having died already, when Julia failed to meet him at the cemetery. As he dies, he talks about his time with Electra similarly to how Spike talks about his time with Julia. Vincent being in the war on Titan also came up in the two-parter Jupiter Jazz. Vicious and Gren were comrades together in that same war. They don't say, but I think they were on the opposite side Vincent fought on. Faye definitely reminded Vincent of Electra, so Simone's right about that. I'm not sure if they caught it, but Rashid, the guy Spike encounters in the Moroccan district alleys is Dr. Mendelo himself. He's in hiding after leaving Cherious Medical over guilt for creating the nanomachines. He seems to have avoided capture. Even though Spike gets grabbed by Cherious goons immediately after their final conversation. He refers to himself in the third person. Daran Noris (Vincent) is a very prominent actor, mostly as a VA, but also live action. I know him as the lawyer Cliff from Veronica Mars. He also did the voice of Cowboy Andy in episode 22 (Cowboy Funk), which is where they would have heard him last. He was also married for 20+ years to Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, known for voicing Motoko in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. She also voiced Julia in the English dub. Jennifer Hale (Electra) is also a very prominent voice actor. I know her best as Naomi in the Metal Gear Solid series and as the female Commander Shepherd in the Mass Effect trilogy. Glad to hear that George has also played those games. She did not play Kathy in Friends, though. That was Paget Brewster, who I've always had a crush on. 😉

Brandon

IMO Faye was definitely not in love with Spike. The Bebop were her found family and she was desperately trying to keep it together. So you're right about the familial feelings. She saw the writing on the wall with Spike chasing after Julia and his rivalry with Vicious. If her and Jet really do stick together as a bounty hunting duo (which I have doubts about), it would never be the same.

DoktorEvil

Yeah, it's an eye of the beholder thing, which I tend to like in storytelling. The ambiguity drives some people nuts, but for my part it's why this is a show I can keep coming back to.

Ca$hWednesday

George: Yes to the John Woo movies plz and thank you.

Charles

Before I forget while watching, Electra is Femshep from Mass Effect. Unless you guys firgure that out before I am done watching Edit: and you figured it out at the end lol

REDR58

In Part I of The Real Folk Blues, as Jet and Spike are on the bridge of the Bebop orbiting the planet, its surface is CG. Once again, we have a mix of drawn and CG animation.

Jose Robles

a little trivia that I do not know if someone already told you about. All Cowboy Bebop characters design (except for Ed, I think) are based on another classic franchise characters, I think they were honoring this long running and classic franchise. Lupin The Third, I hope you react in the future to the movie by Studoi Gibli, The Castle of Cagliostro.

André Carvalho

Cowboy Bebop feels like a show about people who found each other too late. Everyone on the Bebop is running from something. Spike, Jet, Faye, Ed, even Ein in his own little way. For a while, that ship becomes a strange kind of home. They eat together, argue, chase bounties, waste time, survive. It never looks perfect, but it feels real. That’s why the last stretch hurts so much. Ed and Ein leaving makes the Bebop feel empty before the story is even over. Julia’s death closes the last door for Spike. And the story of the tiger-striped cat suddenly becomes clear: Spike had been living like someone who could die and come back forever, until he finally found the one loss he couldn’t return from. The ending doesn’t feel like a twist or a spectacle. It feels like the quiet end of a chapter in life. Someone leaves. Someone dies. A room gets silent. A song keeps playing. And years later, somehow, you still feel it. Cowboy Bebop is one of those rare works that makes life feel a little bigger after you’ve seen it. You’re gonna carry that weight.

Zedarion

har to find legally but not the "other" way <.< >.>

Greg Johanson

I think Faye loves spike the same way invisgal loves Robert in dispatch

dys

Even though it's a different continuity so not really required, I would suggest doing the original Ghost in the Shell movie before Stand Alone Complex. Also I do think the dub is decent but not as good as Cowboy Bebop's. It has a good cast but there's a lot of long technical terms thrown around that are hard to translate into English in a way that doesn't make a lot of the dialogue sound awkward.

dys

I agree with a lot of folks suggesting Ghost in the Shell for a thematically similar series with music from the same composer (Yoko Kanno), but I would also suggest Wolf's Rain, another series from the same studio as Cowboy Bebop with a lot of the same people working on it including the composer. For that one I think the dub is actually superior to the original Japanese.

Eversharpe

Simone does her drive off bit looking cooler than Wesley Snipes as Blade in Siberia. At the drive-thru a very confused attendant is left holding Simone's order.

CRossLP

Classic George "WE KNOW the movie takes place during the season as is part of that story not after"... Only to almost immediately forget and be making guesses that then involve the movie being after the series and being shocked at the end "what is the movie about then?" only to re-remember at the end. Loved rewatching the series with you guys. Besides other classic anime that others are recommending for the channel. I'd love for ya'll to react to The Apothecary Diaries. I think it is perfect for this channel, the storyline weaving is second to none that I think Simone would love and George could definitely flex some knowledge too. I think the discussions would be incredible.

Ari Ramirez

In life, we all wish the good times would never end, but they do, eventually. You drift apart from the people who were there. You carry that weight. See you, space cowboy.

Holdenk

Yea, Spike does die at the end. The old native man said he saw Spikes star fall in a dream. Glad y'all liked this. A few suggestions: Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell, Trigun. Till next time!

Nikodevious

"You're gonna carry that weight", and many of us have been, since April 24, 1999. Now, you will too. Much love.

Jon Rob

Love a good melancholy plot line. I bet you would like some of the ones from the Ghost in the Shell TV series too.

John Smith

"I think he's probably dead and there's no more crime now." - Simone No, that would be Code Geass. (Minor spoilers okay here, because I don't think they'll ever watch Code Geass and even if they do they'll forget this comment long before it becomes relevant.)

JH

Ironically… the same voice actress that played Julia plays Major Motoko Kusanagi—-Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who, even more ironically, is married to the American Voice actor Steve Blum, the Eng Dub voice for Spike in Bebop lol

JH

George if you want more tragedy… Try Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans!

James Rob Ross

Been carrying that weight since I was 14. Ghost in the Shell and 86 are my next two in my top anime list.

HanSwolo

It's interesting you guys had the discussion about whether or not this movie was made primarily for new audiences or existing fans of the show. It works for both and is written in a similar way to how the movie Serenity (sequel to Firefly) was. For that, it was definitely (and confirmed by Joss Whedon himself) made to be palatable for the uninitiated viewer while honoring long-time fans. That said, there are a lot of show fans that thought Serenity felt like it "reset" some characters just so they can rehash significant conflicts and character beats for new viewers, which added a slight friction to the viewing experience for a bit. Still, I think that Serenity is a better film and is ultimately more valuable to its franchise than Cowboy Bebop: The Movie was to its series, largely because it advances longstanding plot threads and character arcs. CB: The Movie felt to me like it was just a long episode that could be slotted into any point of the show pre-episode 23. We don't really learn much new about any of the Bebop crew. It's fun enough and nice to see the higher budget, but ultimately it's not particularly important in the grand scheme. It's strange, whenever I return to either of these franchises, I always watch them back-to-back. It's no secret that there's a conceptual throughline between the two. A ragtag bunch of misfit toys finding home on a beat-up space clunker, all of them just trying to survive the best they can. They all bond and come together as a makeshift family for a time, as brief as it is. In the end, some leave, some stay, but all are permanently changed in ways big and small. That's life. Glad you watched it all. Plz watch Neon Genesis: Evangelion. George would like it, I think. Sorry but I gave JJK a try and fell off.

Carlos

Also Cowboy Andy

Raven Blackrose

This really was the greatest anime ever. Watched along for the first time with y'all. Good god, the music, the animation, the tragedy, the everything... Oh, how did Vincent survi- NANOMACHINES, SON

Lionbarber

I maintain that this movie has some of the most realistic animated fight scenes you'll see anywhere. Not bonkers over-the-top shonen style battles, but real ducking, weaving, blocking, etc.

Dorran

The really fascinating thing about this whole show is that our protagonists spend... the vast majority of it avoiding their own stories. They are, to a very large degree, well-traveled side-characters in other people's stories. And... yes. They have good reason to avoid resolving their own stories. Their stories are tragedies, ultimately. Still... I love that the creators didn't shy away from the tragedy of everything; they let their stories find their natural end. This show is a beautiful, bittersweet tragedy, and that is something that... we don't get a lot of. It is a universe where governments and corporations are corrupt, even out in the solar system, humans are still humans, no matter where they are, and, a lot of the time, the biggest struggle is just to get on with life. And... yeah. As a result, it is one of those shows that sticks with you. For myself... over two decades on. So... yeah. Just like the rest of us, you're going to carry that weight now, too.

Thall

That guy that got shot by Vincent in the train looked like Shou Tucker. Soooo... good thing he got hit.

Gooseman

Black lagoon :)

Shibby

Thank you for introducing me to this show it's now one of my favourites. It's a shame it had to end so soon but it was perfect.

oscar latorre

its a nice show but i think it falls a little short compared to bebop.

oscar latorre

yeah... 2000s anime was something else...

oscar latorre

Im 43 now and i watched this series premiere and blew my mind. I have all the music CDs and a collector edition with the DVDs. Las year I saw yoko kanno and the seatbelts at Barcelona Manga Convention. My Top 1 anime series of all time. A couple of suggestions: - jin Roh. wolf brigade (movie) - Psycho pass (firstr season) - Code Geass. The original one. This one is a woderful material for reactions - My dress up darling. A warm palate cleanser. - Gurren Laggann. Another one that hits hard. - Your lie in april. My second favourite anime of all times. One season. Life changing experience. I think any of those are wonderful material for rection. Keep the good work.

Aaron Stinson

“I love the kind of woman who can kick my ass.” Great line. There’s a parody of this scene that you two should watch titled, “I love the kind of woman who will actually just kill me”

Allan

I know it's probably too late for this to get seen now, but this is a compilation of all the next episode previews from the series. Pretty much all reactors skip these to avoid spoilers, but I think they're worth watching since it's basically a whole bunch of original audio material featuring the voice actors in character. They can be funny little skits, a character reciting a poem - they're actually really varied and creative. Some of them like the one at the end of Toys in the Attic feel like part of the episode. It's practically the punchline to the joke of the whole episode, so it's a bit of a shame so many people just never hear it. And I really like the wistful feeling of the one going into the last two parter. Oh and the one leading into Ed's last episode with the actress humming Ed's theme tune. Anyway, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykSVbBsBmzM

The Patreon urge to spoil shows lol

Jen

Watch Paranoia Agent. It's extremely weird and messed up and brilliant.

REDR58

I concur. It looks magnificent.

zanzibarwhite -

definitely my favorite anime, but also top 5 if not number 1 animated movie period.

John Smith

Okay, yes; but really, has anyone been recommending Code Geass? It's one of those anime that belongs in the past, like Elfen Lied or Lucky Star.

SANAMDEEP

i hope they watch code geass, i finished the show literally today and its def one of the best animes i've ever seen
