I am going to enjoy this one 🍕🍿

Ross E Bailey

You HAVE NO IDEA how long I’ve been waiting for this. All other plans are now on hold this morning…

Mike FromOz

That thumbnail reminds me of Jaime Lee Curtis on the train in "Trading Places" 🤣😁

REDR58

I, as well.

REDR58

Come on George, no Jaws for you next to Simone? I’m very disappointed. Har-umph!

Matt O'Keefe

Can't wait for Octopussy. Just to hear the jokes and hear Simone pronounce it.

Spacedone

Moonraker is perhaps my favourite Bond movie. It's not the best by any stretch of the imagination, it's quite campy and silly, but it has my favourite Bond baddie in Michael Lonsdale, the John Barry soundtrack is excellent and it's just fun.

djKENTO

So George, the skydiving and moving horizontal thing... it only LOOKS like they're moving drastically to the side because the camera is also falling relative to the subject. So from their perspective you only see the horizontal movement. But if you were further out you'd see a LOT of vertical drop with it.

Forkbeard83

"Thats a funny nose for a plane." George has never seen a picture of Concord?!? thought you were a polymath.

Happy Hanukkah

Surely you'll be following this up with The Story of O (1975)?

REDR58

Still have my original B&W Gameboy and all its games that I got new the year it was released. Still works.

Matt Blanchette

Toshiro Suga, who played Chang, was the kendo instructor of one of this film's producers, Michael Wilson. He was not an actor, and the screenwriter, Christopher Wood, thought he was "as threatening as the skin on a rice pudding" (I am not entirely sure if that avoids skirting racism, as a "witticism", but I am not the judge of that).

C Perry

Back when I first saw this in back in the late 70s I loved Dame Shirley Bassey theme song, I loved Jaws coming back, I loved John Barry's score, and hated everything else. But as I got older, I started loving this movie a little more each year. It's so cheesy, probably Roger Moore's cheesiest. Yeah, I love it. My 3 least favorite Bond films: Die Another Day The Man With The Golden Gun Diamonds Are Forever (Though I loved Jill St. John 😍 and Dame Shirley's song).

John Wayne

Moonraker? I hardly know her

Tej Shah

Top 3 Bonds: On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Skyfall, Casino Royale Bottom three: Spectre, The Man With the Golden Gun, Die Another Day (unless you're in some way intoxicated, then it's great)

Richard Pearce

I don't think I've ever felt older that George didn't recognise Concorde

Matt O'Keefe

My aunt, who is wealthy used to ride the Concorde especially when she went to France. She would tell us about the celebrities she would see. My mom liked to hear about them.

Data Cable

A billionaire owner of a rocket company that plans on breeding his own race of people. Gee, good thing those only exist in fiction.

Ca$hWednesday

Yes, Star Wars was a big reason this movie took place in space. They wanted to ride those coattails a bit. Unfortunately, it didn't make for a great movie. It's pretty common for the Bond films to not follow the novels they were named after entirely accurately, but this one was so far off from what Fleming wrote, it's crazy. Other than the title itself and some of the character names, it's an entirely different story. As a huge Bond fan, i can safely say my bottom 3 films not including the "unofficial" ones: Moonraker, Man With The Golden Gun, Die Another Day.

Happy Hanukkah

Yes I'm bein' followed by a moonraker... 🎵

Amos T Fairchild

The only Bond film I will reliably rewatch and enjoy and actually remember everything that happens is For Your Eyes Only, which I think is the next in the series. The rest kind of all blend together in level of enjoyment. It's nice to get... back down to earth, so to speak.

rictus grin

the second bond movie i saw in the cinema

Mastervodo

I love James Bone, but this movie is just silly. I so much prefer the Daniel Craig ones. And Dench is the Best M.

Happy Hanukkah

Dude, that was like 251 years ago, and George isn't even American! :-P

rictus grin

BTW a Moonraker is the name of the highest sail on a tall ship

Happy Hanukkah

I am hereby downgrading his status to know-it-almost-all.

Jedi Lounger

George, I genuinely love this movie but also acknowledge how crazy and silly it is. I love lots of bad movies. And that's ok.

Mycenaeus

Now you should watch "Silver Streak" (1976), too; you will know why when you see it.

rictus grin

yes star wars is the reason we got Moonraker

rictus grin

Simone the drax house was shot at the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte in Maincy, France

Walter H.

I have a small suggestion that I hope you’ll consider. Would it be possible to add either a James Bond tag or a dedicated category for the James Bond movies? Since they are currently listed only under their individual titles.

Jedi Lounger

Side note, for another movie with incredible skydiving stunts I would check out Drop Zone (1994) with Wesley Snipes. Also The Rocketeer (1991)

C Perry

Barry really was in his bag with Moonraker's score. "Flight Into Space" is a masterpiece.

Darren Harrison

Just think. When this movie came out, one of the criticisms was that it was unrealistic for a private individual to have a space program. Today we have at least two in Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. I hope you do "For Your Eyes Only," the next one in the series. It was made as a return to the more serious movies of the 1960s after the producers realized that Bond had gone a little too far out in "Moonraker." In fact, the first two-thirds of "Moonraker" are really quite good. It falls apart from the double-taking pigeon onwards. In this, it shares a lot with Pierce Brosnan's fourth 007 movie, "Die Another Day" which also has the same wonderful first two-thirds

elle

At 9yo, this was my first Bond movie, and I remember it fondly. It's kooky as hell... and left me *very* confused about what grown-up movies were supposed to be about. LOLOL. Yep... Moonraker, Foul Play and the Goodbye Girl (the latter two are great movies BTW and really worth a watch!) as a trio were a very late 70s kaleidoscopic introduction to the spectrum of film romance and what those mysterious mature adults 'really' got up to. Snortle.

Russell Massey

This is when Bond jumped the shark for me. I'll pick up again once Timothy Dalton take over.

Data Cable

On the off chance someone didn't mention this in Jaws' first appearance... Richard Keil was originally cast as The Incredible Hulk in the Bill Bixby series, though after some filming, the producers decided they wanted someone more muscular than just tall, so the role was re-cast with Lou Ferrigno. One shot of Keil as the Jolly Green Giant, from the back, remains in the pilot episode.

megamoo chilli

When I watched this as a child I I remember really liking it, thinking it was clever, I loved the gadgets and thought there was nothing off about it. Watching it now it is sooooo goofy. Every scene has some sort of logic breaking nonsense. The script is pretty tight. All excess plot is stripped away. It's cartoony action and yucks and innuendo. Definitely feels more Austin Powers than James Bond.

Data Cable

I think the "crazy parking garage" Simone is thinking of wasn't in a Bond film, but Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

rictus grin

this is possibly the silliest of the bond movies

Vellu

John Glen, editor of Moonraker and other Bond films, takes over the franchise for next five films and there is a noticeable tone down of the silliness. Especially in the Dalton films, which are my favorites. For Your Eyes Only is great too, thats the one I had on VHS as a kid.

Vellu

Also the opening in For Your Eyes Only might raise some questions, so just search for "eon-mcclory dispute" to clarify things.

Patrick

Looking forward to this. Jaws is easily my fave henchmen.

Jayson Phillips

this will always be my fav, I saw it in the movies as a kid in the 80's and instantly wanted a Moonraker toy.

Ari Ramirez

Top, no particular order: Skyfall Goldeneye From Russia With Love Bottom, likewise: Quantum of Solace Spectre Die Another Day

2026-06-25 16:33 In my theater, you could hear a pin drop during the "You obey ME!" exchange between Drax and Jaws. It's hard to impart nearly 50 years later exactly how popular Richard Kiel's portrayal of Jaws was. Moonraker was DEFINITELY put into production because of Star Wars' success...if you go back to the end of Spy Who Loved Me, the credits show that For Your Eyes Only was planned to be next. Star Wars came out and they said "Oh yeah, Moonrakers next!", even though the original novel is far afield from ended up on screen. Audiences definitely appreciated the Star Wars aspect...there was laughter throughout my theater when the two platoons fight in space! They'd already been through multiple Star Wars "tribute" films, they knew what they were getting! George mentioned that this Bond film seemed more immature, and I think the reason may be twofold. One, without the goofiness, the script is really about global genocide, with a hard scifi overlay. That may have been far too austere for the producers, and so I think they leaned into the humor as a way cushioning things for the audience. Second, in the wake of Star Wars, Moonraker was planned to be heavily merchandised. The Bond films had toys based on them before, most notably Goldfinger and Thunderball. But the Mego Toy corporation was planning a line similar to Kenner's Star Wars line, with 12" and 3 3/4" action figures and accessories. With this in mind, I think the filmmakers hedged their bets and made the film a little more kid friendly. I mean, it's one thing to blow up Alderaan...it's another to kill everyone on Earth!

Top 3 Bonds for me. 1. Casino Royale because it's freaking awesome. 2. Goldeneye because it's freaking awesome. 3. Octopussy because it's the first one I watched as a kid and they showed it a lot on tv and it's nortalgic for me.

rictus grin

"all the innuendos" double entendres and innuendos didn't feel odd at the time as a kid as it was a major part of British light Entertainment in the 70's checkout some clips of the popular sitcom Are You Being Served to see what i mean

Monica Alarcon

Oh don't forget "Never Say Never Again" with Sean Connery Wich came around the same time as Octopussy...

OddThomas

Top 3 Bonds: Casino Royale, Skyfall, Licence to Kill. Bottom 3: Die Another Day, Diamonds are Forever, Octopussy

Brandon

Peak Roger Moore era silliness. I hope you finish up his movies soon and get to the Dalton era. He only did two films, but they feel like a direct response to what the Moore movies had become by the time they made Moonraker.

Mike Kay

Can't wait to watch this one with ya'll...it was a favorite of mine as a kid and part of what got me so fascinated with science-fiction!

Mike Kay

Octopussy really was terrible...lol

Justin Leone

I was starting to worry you'd given up on the Bond franchise. A lot of the Moore films really push the silliness angle too far (The Spy who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only are the two exceptions that strike a good balance) and it'd be a shame if you burned out before getting to Dalton's two superb entries.

Ross E Bailey

The editing of that sequence accompanied by Barry's music is pretty damn wonderful!

Ross E Bailey

Certain things are promised there that are a mystery to this day...

Justin Leone

George, how did you/your cousin manage to break a Game Boy? I got mine right when they were released, in '89. It was dropped countless times. Once it was even hurled across a room (not by me). And 37 years later, it still works. Never encountered a more indestructible electronic device.

Happy Hanukkah

I felt like the Dalton ones were an over-correction, and not Bond-y enough. But to each their own, and I might feel differently upon re-watching them.

Jayson Phillips

Before the Mandala effect the blond girl DID have braces.

OddThomas

Taking of centrifuge, I hope after The Right Stuff you also watch First Man, with Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong

Mike MacColin

I love the Bond movies, and I'm so happy that you finally got around to continue the series. After Moonraker, the next five movies become much more serious, and some of my very favourites are among them, including the upcoming "For Your Eyes Only". The opening scene alone is a landmark in Bond history - not for the stuntwork, but for what's happening in it.

Brandon

With regard to the next Bond, I have no idea who it will be. I know it won't be Idris Elba, though. He's come out and said he doesn't think he'd be right for the role. He went so far as to say that making a black Bond would get a negative response in various foreign markets, implying that he doesn't want to deal with that backlash. I'm sure the lowest dregs of Twitter and Reddit would never shut up about it either. He's also already in his 50's and they're looking for a guy who can theoretically play the role for 20+ years. Daniel Craig was in is late 30's when he was cast and in his mid 50's when he retired from the role.

Brandon

I admit it's been a long time since I've seen the Dalton flicks as well. Same with the Roger Moore era until S&G started reacting to them. Supposedly Dalton is the closest to how Ian Fleming imagined the character to look, though.

Darren Harrison

The plane with the weird-looking nose was the Concorde. The plane, flown by Air France and British Airways, was capable of flying more than twice the speed of sound (1,350 mph (2,160 km/h) or Mach 2.0. It achieved a top speed of 1,450 mph (Mach 2.23) for the fastest New York to London crossing on record (2 hours and 52 minutes). It's first commercial flights were on January 21, 1976 with two simultaneous takeoffs: a British Airways flight from London to Bahrain, and an Air France flight from Paris to Rio de Janeiro. The Concorde was retired in 2003, primarily due to massive operating costs, a sharp decline in post-9/11 air travel demand, and aging aircraft.

Jayson Phillips

Also if you rem Black widow this was the same type story base, the red room hidden in the sky, and she was watching Moonraker in her trailer.

OddThomas

Richard Kiel looks like someone supersized Michael Shannon

Data Cable

Though it might seem familiar, as it was another adaptation of the novel Thunderball, resulting from Legal Shenanigans over authorship and film rights

Thall

Well uh... I guess the start with the circus was correct?

Robert Finlay

Definitely the worst Bond. The screenwriter also did the "Confessions of..." films and this is basically Bond as Timmy Lea, always getting into crazy situations, leading to sex with a multitude of glamorous dolly birds.

Raven Blackrose

I wouldn't say targeted at someone younger, I would say it's very 70's British farcical. Of the times. Thought the movie was fantastic regardless. At a certain point you have to accept a movie based on it's own goals rather than expectation. But the circus bit was stupid.

Philipp Roensch

The MMO to learning English pipline is real, I've spent so many hours in Rappelz and learned most of my casual English there. That and Weezer lyrics. Back to Bond! And with such a hilarious one. "Were all the Bond [movies] end - this one begins" the answer is the orbit I guess. Star Wars released just 2 years before and you probably know were this places among Star Trek hype. It was the time of Sci-Fi, just as set dressing and show value, even if it blows the budget and makes no sense. The inciting shuttle-napping is already silly, who transports a shuttle with fuel and such that it could launch mid air and burn the carrier?^^ I normally don't question Bond for the rule of cool, but the tonal shifts and comedy potential of Moore always puzzles me. I would not want to talk about least favorites, not to dash some expectations for you. But Quantum of Solace is among them, you've seen that one. I'm voting for Patrick Gibson for next Bond, not soo likely, but he is great in 007 First Light.

djKENTO

Simone confusing Mission Impossible for Bond once again.

JoeE

This one’s pretty silly, but sadly missing a southern sheriff

OddThomas

In the 70s people went to a Bond movie to have fun, see Bond snag the girl, blow up a giant base, it was all tongue in cheek. The move towards more reality based/"That would never happen in the real world" attitude came with more grounded action heroes like Bourne and the Craig era Bond. Saying that, the late 80s Timothy Dalton era was (at the time) a fairly radical move towards a more real, violent Bond after the goofiness of Moore, and it was great. Sadly Dalton didn't want to do any more and then came Brosnan, who was a move back to a more fun Bond after the 'too violent' media reaction that perhaps tainted Dalton. I think George will enjoy the Dalton movies a lot.

Philipp Roensch

So the Roger Moore Bonds will only get sillier from here. The riffs on other movies, tropes and cartoon action scenes were seen as the show values of a Bond film. I like gadges having surprising uses, but everything for a gag or reference really feels like we are in the parody.

TexasNight

It's funny that Simone guessed that the girl had braces (before the revel)... there is a legit conspiracy that a lot of ppl believe that when the movie was originally released that the girl *DID* have braces, but that they were digitally removed for some reason.. It is often cited as an example of the "Mandela affect" or possible proof of parallel universes. - lol I am not kidding!

Cally

War movies for me would include Casablanca or The Great Escape.

bullettbot

thumbnail is 9/10 would of been a 10 with George with Jaws teeth

Old School Drew

My top 3 bond films are dr. No, Goldfinger and Casino Royale (Craig). Bottom 3 are Moonraker, the man with the golden gun and die another day. The movie was pushed into production after the success of Star wars, for your eyes only was originally after the spy who loved me

Dan Holmes

My parents used this film to instigate "The Talk" 😅

Dan Holmes

Idris Elba and Henry Cavill are the only Bond successors I can think of that would be up to the task as of now. But I expect they'll probably cast Tom Holland or Zendaya instead 🥲

REDR58

To quote McBain, “that’s the joke!”

REDR58

That would indeed be something.

REDR58

And therefore the best.

Kris King

Hugo Drax and Elon Musk have the same number of letters in both names. Fortunately that's the only coincidence.

Neil

The over-the-top gadgets and cheesiness are what set Bond apart from other spy franchises, but there are really two different styles of Bond films. The Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig eras are mostly action with a bit of cheese, whereas the Sean Connery and Roger Moore eras are mostly cheese with a bit of action. Everyone has their preference, but for me, this film is ok but peak Bond cheese. Personally I am really looking forward to when you get around to the Timothy Dalton films.

REDR58

I had a little Corgi Moonraker diecast shuttle. I believe it is the only Bond toy I’ve ever owned.

Maiki

Well, rumour has it that there could be a Jason Bourne reboot....with Zendaya replacing Matt Damon.

REDR58

Terribly good!

REDR58

Barry’s score is quite good here, but if you listen to it and then watch “Dances with Wolves” (music also by Barry), DWW has a very similar-sound. Likewise for “The Black Hole” (1979) also by Barry.

Jayson Phillips

I bought the Model the next day the one where you needed glue and it was in a ton of pieces, only toy I ever saw of moonraker. the lasers did it for me.

Thomas Yanez

George, in answer to a question - I saw this movie in the theater with my dad, and while we loved it - both diehard Bond fans - neither of us were fans of the gradually increasingly silly humor of the Roger Moore era, or the obvious money grab after Star Wars. If you watched at the end of "The Spy Who Loved Me", they said that the next movie would be "For Your Eyes Only". They detoured to this to get on the space movie bandwagon, and THEn made "For Your Eyes Only".

Mike Medaugh

Drax's room in the Amazon toward the end of the movie always reminded me of the ship from The Black Hole. It probably doesn't hold up today, but 8 year old me loved that movie.

Seth's Coffee Cup Ambush

I usually prefer my Bonds to have a more of a serious edge with my favorites being Dalton, early Craig and early Connery. But I really don’t mind the silliness a lot of the time. I think my biggest problem with Moonraker is that it is constantly undercutting its better moments with excessive silliness or really broad jokes. If I remember right, the series does course correct a bit after this but for me it really reengages with the Dalton and early Brosnan films.

Adam Morgan

Coincidentally, this is one of my least favourite Bond movies. It is by far the silliest of the series. I could probably cope with the space battles and lasers; it's the double-taking pigeon and similar scenes that put it at the bottom. My other two least favourite as just because they are boring: From Russia with Love and Quantum of Solace. Conversely, I'm not sure what my top three would be. I like a lot of them and the selection often depends on my mood. Goldeneye is probably the most consistently in that group though.

REDR58

“The Black Hole” (which I enjoy) is worth watching just for the visual design and the special effects. It is a very atmospheric movie. And the music is great.

Darren Harrison

Correction: “Never Say Never Again” was based in the five scripts developed in the 1950s for a potential movie. When the movie fell through Fleming used the scripts to develop the novel “Thunderball”. For example, Fatima Blush (played by Barbara Carrera in NSNA) was a character in one of the 1950s drafts.

Darren Harrison

True. But the investigation into the accident did reveal it was not a fault with the Concorde. The accident was caused by debris from another plane left on the runway.

Perry Campbell

Cmon George take easy. I sure people make fun of all those goofy Kung Fu movies people flying around on trees etc… Jaws was my favorite villain. This has to be in my top 3 favorite bonds films ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Jacob King

High watermark for the franchise. Every subsequent entry is actively trying not be Moonraker (Dalton and Craig) or just falling short (Brosnan). Either way you need to think about Moonraker when making any Bond movie.

Ari Ramirez

Also, I (and I assume most people who like it) love this movie BECAUSE it's silly and campy, not in spite of it! It's a "so bad it's good" type deal. But yeah, it's far from good and far from the best Bonds out there

Chris Kimmel

It was used in Man in the iron mask movie and other movies. The Mansion is actually in France

I Want A Hypothalamus For Christmas

One of my pet peeves is when actors are pretending to be in zero gee and they move around in slow motion. You don't move around in slow motion, you just float.

zanzibarwhite -

Most suggestive name for any Bond girl. yes even more than Octpussy

Jimazoid

You can love this movie and love the humor and stupidness of most of the stuff in this movie.

REDR58

I love the Roger Moore Bond movies because of their silliness. I enjoy this movie and don’t take it seriously.

REDR58

I like all Bond movies to one degree or another but the only one I truly "hate" is "No Time to Die." Wretched film. Anyway. The real Space Shuttle (Orbiter) was transported at various times on the back of a modified Boeing 747 called the "Shuttle Carrier Aircraft": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuttle_Carrier_Aircraft However, it is not all possible for the Orbiter to launch from the back of the SCA as seen in the beginning of the movie. The Orbiter carries no fuel internally for its 3 main rocket engines. The fuel for those engines is located entirely within the large external fuel tank that is eventually jettisoned after launch. The most that would happen if the Orbiter somehow detached in midair would be for it to glide to a landing, just as it does when returning from space. The space shuttles in the movie went into space (fictionally) just about a year and a half before the first real launch of the Shuttle Columbia and orbits around the Earth in April 1981. George, you were hoping she would go into the lake and give him a sword...You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!

REDR58

So, for those that don't know, "The Story of O" (1975) stars Corinne Cléry, who plays the dogg-ed Corinne Dufour in "Moonraker." "The Story of O" was based on the 1954 erotic novel "Histoire d'O" by Anne Cécile Desclos who wrote the book under the name "Pauline Réage." The movie "The Story of O" was somewhat controversial, as it involves sadomasochism and it is currently rated "NC-17" in the US.

Jeromy M

Just commenting to show my appreciation that you've got back on the Bond bandwagon. I'm eagerly awaiting the rest.

Nathan Jasper

Top 3: Goldfinger, GoldenEye, Skyfall Bottom 3: On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Licence to Kill, Moonraker Now, that being said, I don't hate any of them. They're all enjoyable. But someone's gotta be last in a ranking.

aronaaax

accounting for a perfect "breeding" system, they would need only around 100 individuals, the more the better ofc :D

Amos T Fairchild

Ugh. I forgot has nuts this one was. It just makes the next one look better and better all the time. lol.

Superpotroast

What? George doesn't like campy Bond?

Maxi

I identify with Simone's excitement of getting a SNES at a garage sale. My first console as a kid was a SNES bought for ridiculously cheap, like 6 bucks {with some games too!}, at a Thrift Shop run by old ladies who had no idea how to price something like a video game console lol I eventually sold it on to some younger former step siblings. Still have my PS1 tho, gotten in a similar way.

Maxi

I can understand the feeling of a rug pull with the opening. I think they were trying to transition slightly from the amazingly intense stunt work to the slower Title Song by attempting to use comedy to suspend disbelief just enough to imply that Jaws survived by landing on a safety net used by Circus Trapeze Artists.

REDR58

Oh, and I can’t remember if Simone and George eventually noticed, but at no point in the movie does Goodhead wear what she does in the poster.

Maxi

About the G Trainer and being in an enclosed pod Simone. In that scenario it isn't the wind affecting his face it's the G's and cyntripical force pulling his face, or from another perspective, trying to throw his face away from himself.

Els

Many people would place Moonraker near the bottom of the Bond movies. High production values combined with an inane story. And then others place it near the top, for exactly the same reasons.

Els

There is a recurring pattern of following up a big-budget silly Bond movie with a more down-to-earth, serious story. You've seen this already with You Only Live Twice followed by On Her Majesty's Secret Service. So it will be interesting to see how the producers chose to follow up Moonraker.

2026-10-19 05:00 It is interesting how the two different kinds of Campiness from retro James Bond and Star Trek don't resonate the same with George. It bothers me in no way whatsoever, just interesting for someone who has a hard time seeing the difference as he does. Especially not bothered enough to send death threats, fuck those people.
2026-06-26 16:59

Maxi

The only thing I will say on Sex in Space is that tension suspension would be very handy when momentum is a concern.

Maxi

Less subtle? Do we not remember the full on side quest with the County Sheriff? Hahaha

Maxi

Pushy Galore was in Goldfinger btw lol

Cc Decc

Yeah, Henry Cavill would have made the perfect Bond, and it annoys me he was never given the shot. But the new Bond masters at Amazon have apparently decided to go with a kiddy Bond, so it will probably be some 20-something with "one hair on ball" who's idea of suave is "wanna drink some brewskis dude?"

richard royston

Moonraker is my second favorite after A view to a kill but yeah I know this movie is totally mental

Joe Lazarus

Oh Please...Henry Cavill has the personality and charisma of a dull 1950s robot 🤣 He was wrong for Superman and most definitely wrong for a sophisticated, charming, witty, smooth, charismatic role like James Bond.

James Keller

Yes, this movie was made to cash in on Star Wars. In fact, when you look at the titles of the previous Bond film, it says James Bond will Return in 'For Your Eyes Only', not 'Moonraker'. But then Star Wars came out and the Mr. Broccoli declared that James Bond needed to go to space. This movie was written and produced on the fly to cash in on a trend and it does kind of show. The screenplay has a very first draft feel about it. But I don't care. This film is a delight to me. It's so cheesy, so ridiculous that I can of just love it. It goes through the motions, checks off all the bond cliches without bothering to explain the why of anything. Why does Bond immediately suspect Drax? Why does Drax immediately jump to wanting to Kill bond right away? Why does Bond hand the gun back to Drax after killing an assassin right in front of him? And why doesn't Drax just use that gun to kill Bond right then? And why EVERYTHING involving the assassination attempt in Venice? I don't know the answers to these questions and I don't care. The film just embraces its goofiness and I applaud it for it.

If I hadn't seen this as a kid I'd be much less forgiving of the silliness of this but with proper expectations you just have fun with it.

I've wanted you two to do a reaction to the 60s Batman movie for awhile. You would have fun with the ridiculousness of it.

This was fun nostalgia for me but I get George's preference for a more serious Bond. Bond and Batman are similar in that they have very different tones in different eras. Many people are influenced by the era they experienced first. I prefer a serious Batman. I was lucky that my first Batman was Frank Miller's Dark Knight. Arguably I was less lucky that Moonraker, on TV with my Dad, was my first Bond. So I prefer something sillier. A serious Bond is too much of a psycho for my tastes.

Elon Musk has a lot more money than Hugo Drax. Drax was only a billionaire; Musk is a trillionaire.

They couldn't even mention Blofeld's name. Kevin McClory held the copyright because he contributed the SPECTRE name to the six drafts written by Fleming, McClory, and Jack Whittingham in the 1950s, towards a film that was eventually abandoned. Fleming, unwisely, didn't ask permission and stole the Blofeld idea for his novel "Thunderball" rather than coming up with a new criminal organization.

Watch Man From UNCLE, as this channel should. Then get back to me. He WAS Bond. Just in a non-Bond movie.

+1 for Rocketeer

Moore's Bond was my introduction to the series as a kid, so he is who I first associate the character with and my favorite depiction. While this movie is rather silly, Moore does turn up the menace from time to time.

Notice that *all* of the women are youthful and attractive while more than a few of the men are ordinary-looking and several look to be in their 50s or 60s. Drax doesn't seem to have an obvious partner. Interesting...

The late French actor Michael Lonsdale who plays Drax also appears in the excellent "The Day of the Jackal" (1973) opposite Edward Fox, "The Name of the Rose" (1986) and in "The Remains of the Day" (1993), all of which you should watch. He is also in 1981's "Chariots of Fire."

42:20 George is right. My grandmother had deformed feet from excessive X-ray exposure from working at Macys. She was the one who demonstrated how the machine worked, and she used it multiple times a day to show customers it was safe!

You know...the thing about Bond is...Daniel Craig is not Bond. Or rather, he represented a sea change. So if you watched him first, all of the Bonds before him feel more or less off. Craig's Bond was I think a reaction to Jason Bourne and the disaster that the final Pierce Brosnan Bond was. They kind of realized that Bond as he had been portrayed for 40 years was out of date, and they had to adapt or fade away. So they turned Craig's Bond into a modern action superhero with about as much humor as a parking meter. But traditionally, Bond was almost...like Playboy? Early 60s male fantasy? Maybe with a dash of female Harlequin romance dangerous handsome guy too? I lack standing to press those comparisons too far, but fact is he was always, if not a comedy character, at least a tongue in cheek wink wink character. He never made much sense. A world famous "spy"? Every room he walks into has a beautiful woman in a slinky dress, he dazzles her with one or two bad puns, and moves right to undressing her? Really? I mean...it would be cool if that is the way it worked, but not in my experience. His spy skills vary widely. he's given goofy gadgets just to have gadgets. Over the top megalomaniacal villains who almost all could kill him, but famously choose not to....this wasn't a serious action franchise even at the beginning. Lots of playfulness. And that was kind of what saved it. By the time something like Moonraker came around some of the classic Bond stuff would already have been "cringe"...unless you play it big and broad and wink wink. And so they did. And by keeping Bond consistent as a character, however dated, and his world consistent they made him one of the most long running iconic characters in moviedom. The goofy isn't a mistake or an accident, its a defining feature of pre-Craig Bonds. You're supposed to laugh at the ridiculous of it all. And so i suppose there is a little Austin Powers there -- Myers was parodying a series that was already self aware of its silliness.

Jeff Norwood-Brown

I think a Moonraker is the tallest mast on a sailing ship. Also known as a skyscraper. If I remember my QI correctly. By this film in the franchise, I think “the new Bond” movie was a public event in the UK. I remember my Uncle roaring with laughter at every joke. Looking back, it is all just really silly, but they were just going for bigger sets, bigger themes, bigger laughs. And you’d be surprised how much g-force a human can put up with. Crazy movie but I still have a bit of affection for it. You’ll have to wait for a change of Bond before they get a bit more thriller again. Even as a kid I never understood why Jaws’ teeth could bite through steel cables just because they were metal. Wouldn’t his jaw bone snap? Probably not worth pulling on this and many other threads in this instalment.

nigel Macbug

always feel this was written by focus groups and committee but every bond always had excellent physical stunts, some stunts world first

I was just about to comment about the Concorde but Richard beat me to it. George, I recommend you dig into it, it was pretty cool.

It was definitely intended as a response to Star Wars. Originally, For Your Eyes Only (the next Bond movie) was supposed to be this movie. But, there was so much Space Movie hype in the zeitgeist at the time, they wanted to cash in. This was the the 2nd Bond movie I saw in a theater so, I didn't have a lot to go on at the time. But as I saw more of the series and how they differed tonally from Moonraker, I just enjoyed it more as a Bond action/comedy romp. And, in that regard, I think it succeeds. I do recall watching this quite a bit back in the day on VHS (taped off of HBO). It's just a fun movie! In terms of (adjusted) Box Office, Thunderball, Goldfinger, and Live and Let Die, You Only Live Twice did better to that point in the franchise. Overall, however, it's #9 of 24 for the entire franchise. I remember reading about Moonraker in Starlog magazine. Here's the cover and table of contents: https://starlog.fandom.com/wiki/Starlog_Issue_22. Unfortunately, the pdf was taken down from Internet Archive. So, this is all that's left.

My grandmother loved this movie and use to watch it all the time on HBO.

Happy Hanukkah

... which they should also watch. :-)

Thanki you for mostly answering my questions. I find that war movies really break down how the people REALLY are deep down. It reveals the character of the people.

Marcus Hicks

Without spoiling anything, the next Bond film definitely is a lot more serious in tone compared to this one.....which was meant to come out *after* FYEO, but it got moved up in the release schedule to capitalise on Star Wars hype.

Matt Blanchette

...he didn't steal Blofeld; he CREATED SPECTRE. There's a whole book about it, "The Battle for Bond", that you can read! He DID steal "Thunderball", but Blofeld and SPECTRE were his babies.

Get into the spinal-stretcher! It'll be fun, they say!

if they think this movie is goofy they should react to the batman movie feom 1966 <3 I soo want to see their reactions to that meme of a film

I remember the day it shut down. I felt sad. I thought "Welp, there goes that dream." Then I remembered I never dreamed about flying on the Concord, but still, it felt like a possibility had shut down.

Darren Harrison

In response to George's question. Roger Moore considered "The Spy Who Loved Me" his best entry, and I tend to agree. He was ill for most of the shooting of "A View to a Kill," and many fans consider it his weakest. Nostalgia value is high for me with that 1985 film. That was the first Bond movie where I actively followed the production - which in the 1980s pre-internet days (the internet was only allowed in universities and the military until the early 1990s) meant cutting out articles from newspapers and subscribing to magazines such as "Starlog" and "Starburst"

Matthew Maxon

i saw this in a drive in movie if memory serves me right. i was a young child. 9-10ish..i dont remember

George! I love the bond franchise, but... I hate Roger Moore, and all his Bond films. The goofyness is a real turn-off for me. Austin Powers took a LOT of inspiration from these specific films, making something absurd, even more absurd.

Jon Johns

George!! Down here in the states, different generations have nicknames / insults for girls with ponytails, "Pippy Longstockings" "Wendy" etc. were there any Chinese fictional characters with pigtails?
