There’s a few movies that are not just great films but also important in the sense that everyone should try to watch and this is definitely one of them along with Schindler’s List. A lot of it is tough to watch but when you watch the entire story arc it’s really powerful. My wife is jewish and we watched this in college and during the dinner scene with Murray she just broke down because this wasn’t just fiction, it’s what some people actually believe. I’m so glad you watched this and thank you for such an honest reaction. Ed Norton had a big hand in editing this film and originally had a darker ending with Derek shaving his head and regressing into his anger for what happened to Danny but glad they kept this ending, tragic as it still was. Another tough watch but also important is The Grey Zone which takes place in a concentration camp.

Couple more important films I think are Saving Private Ryan, Boys Don’t Cry, United 93, and The Inside.

I hate that I know this but no Mein Kampf is not 50 pages. It’s closer to 800-1000 depending on the translation. I know this because I went to a private Christian school and my racist 5th grade teacher assigned it to me before I really understood what a nazi was or who hitler was.

One time I attempted to read it, but it was so illogical and quite frankly nonsensical, I couldn't get past the first chapter. It literally hurt my brain to read it.

I like most of your reactions, but in this one you were a little too busy being all appalled by the nazi stuff non-stop, not focusing on the great dialogue and acting. I mean the guys dad was shot by black drug dealers when he was trying to put down a fire. Less than that would be enough to screw someone up. Plus it was said that the immigrant gangs would beat them up, so they started to look for strength in numbers. None of that justifies being a nazi scum, but the movie shows really well why someone very intelligent might start to believe into these things. We just have to be better than that.

My thoughts before clicking: Oh they aint gonna be ready for this shit. My thoughts after clicking: Oh they ain't ready for this shit.

I only saw this once and it was twenty years ago, my freshman year of college. It's one of those films, ridiculously good and impactful and definitely worth seeing, but so hard hitting that you don't want to repeat view it. Edward Norton is an amazing actor and so damn good in this one. I know he's Oscar nominated but I really hope he gets one someday.

This film is, of course, on a level all its own. However, as an exercise in ONLY watching an amazing performance S&G should check out "Primal Fear", to my knowledge Edward Norton's feature debut. This may be apocryphal, but the story goes his classmates were already in awe of him at Yale School of Drama and there was great anticipation of his first movie – and it didn't disappoint! S&G and especially George MUST RESIST looking up anything about this film... there are fun casting surprises for you (early film for a few of what may be your faves), but don't misunderstand, "Primal Fear" is very good Hollywood Thriller that happens to be Edward Norton's first major film performance. But it would be very easy to read a synopsis here or a review there and seeing a spoiler that CANNOT be undone. YaY!

Time for a "Serious Black Films" poll... kind of a balancing out of the despair. Not that you guys aren't very broad in your different choices and perspectives, but rewatching this reaction of this film that I saw when it came out puts me in a mind... 1. Fences – Based on the August Wilson play that won all kinds of awards, including best Play by August Wilson and best Actor for James Earl Jones in the lead. I saw that production so I haven't seen the movie, but with Denzel Washington portraying the same character, Troy Maxson, as James Earl Jones I'm pretty confident it will not disappoint. 2. Malcolm X – the Spike Lee Directed and co-written film based on the Alex Haley book starring, not surprisingly, Denzel Washington again (he's not only "The Equalizer" although he brings surprising depth and gravitas to even that kind of film). He was nominated for an Academy Award... I'm sure the actual winner was deserving too but... 3.Do the Right Thing – Another Spike Lee masterpiece which, like you kept saying about this film, "It could have been made today with all the same language." Indeed, if memory serves, Ted Koppel did an entire episode of NightLine after the Academy Awards on ABC asking why the actual Best Picture, "Do the Right Thing", didn't even get nominated, nor did the Director, Spike Lee, nor did the screenwriter Spike Lee. Spike Lee appeared on that show and was very gentle and sincere praising the actual Best Picture winner, "Driving Miss Daisy", but wondered about "A society that is ready to deal with Race Relations 40 years ago, but not ready to deal with Race Relations today." (close to a perfect quote from my memory) 4. I Am Not Your Negro – (do you guys do documentaries?) Anyway an amazing look at James Baldwin and how far ahead of his time he was... he was "pretty much out" for his time and it discusses his relative struggle with being Black and Gay before most would have. I think it might include clips from, but I also recommend searching YouTube for the Cambridge Union Society Debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley on the motion, "The American dream is at the expense of the American Negro." Another clip on YouTube (and maybe part of the film) is where Jame Baldwin and Comedian turned Civil Rights Activist, Dick Gregory are answering questions. A lovely nugget is how James Baldwin handles a more "woke" (not a term back then, but yes, "woke") person in the crowd admonished him for using the word "Negro" instead of "Black Man". He agrees that the more modern phrase might be preferable, but his personal experience that he shares as he agrees is priceless. 5. More subtle than the above, but monumental for its time, the original "In the Heat of the Night". In 1967 it won a lot of Academy Awards, but not one for Sidney Poitier, go figure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Michael Wilbon trailblazer African American sports writer spent a nice long time explaining how his father would ALWAYS take him to see any Sidney Poitier film, how his whole community would always see any Sidney Poitier film... that it meant that much to see someone that looked like him (them) in a leading role. That's 5, I'm sure I'm missing a lot of others, but I welcome other suggestions and to give G&S a heads up for other films as powerful as this. YaY! (oops first posted to "YT Version")

Don’t get me wrong this is a banger of a movie but im ready for Jojo Rabbit to win now :D

Cinebinge

haha honestly we just entered both winning titles into a digital coin flip and did 2 out of 3. but as soon as we find extra time to do an additional film, it will be jojo rabbit, and it will return to the next poll for sure.

King_Panarisi

Yeah thats the most honest way to do it i get it but Jojo was so close for 2 times now, Hope you guys get to see it soon its one of my favourite recent movies.

Lucifer Moon

My brother was one of the top skin-heads in my area and this movie is insanely accurate. Luckily he left that life but only after being held at gun-point for hours by the neo-nazi above him on the totem.

Lucifer Moon

Unfortunately, Skin-Heads and Neo-Nazis actually tend to love this film.

TuvixLogic

Excellent reaction, I got to watch some cartoons now.

EMB

It is truly wild how both Nolan outside the market talking to the gang of Nazis, and him at the dinner table used arguments that I've heard practically verbatim time and time again up to this day.

JoeySnowyNoey

As a Hispanic man Neo-Nazis scare the ever-living shit out of me. I always wanted to see this movie, but I was scared too. Glad I got you guys to watch it with for the first time.

ChickensAreRacist

This is now my favorite reactions you both gave. It assured me a respect I felt I already had for you guys. It’s such a hard nosed portrait of the ubiquitous ugliness we see online and that’s been going on for centuries. And your visceral reactions seemed perfect. Thank you for doing this.
