So I DID come back here after rewatching your "Alien" reaction earlier! it's amazing how strong the temptation is to answer some of your questions, even though I know they've all be covered in comments in the THREE YEARS since this came out. I still have the urge to say "It's because of this..." I view these first two films as a standalone duology, and dismiss pretty much all of the following movies. Apart from just personal taste, I think that it's because this has a set ending instead of the open-ended ending of the first film. Ripley had very little control in the shuttle that ended "Alien". Her own log states that she's just going to float toward inhabited territory and hope to get picked up. She has no distress call and she isn't aiming for a specific pickup point. So when she ISN'T picked up and floats for decades, it's tragic but not a contradiction. Here, though, the ending is specific and finite. There's no damage to the Sulaco that impacts its navigation or controls. Ripley doesn't say "I think I have us pointed towards earth, but I'm not sure" or "there are parts of the ship I can't search, so I can only pray that an alien isn't still aboard". She says they're going home and that's IT. So with that clear ending, the story is done. And for "Alien 3" to just say NEVERMIND has always rubbed me the wrong way.

Deadly Ramon

Especially since the Dark Horse comics published in the late 1980s provided a much better sequel, where Hicks and Newt play major roles, than the Alien3 revision. Despite that, I've come to appreciate the characters and acting abilities in this film, but wish that they didn't just cavalierly kill off Newt and Hicks.
