Way more speculative science (with a horror twist) but still very science grounded is “Sunshine” by Danny Boyle from 2007.

Steve H

Well, there isn't enough air on Mars to create such a wind storm as what is in the movie.

ChickensAreRacist

Simone! Totally understand why you thought that chick (Kate Mara) was also from Newsroom. Cuz she plays a sorta similar role… in House of Cards. She was the journalist that got pushed into the (ain’t gonna spoil it).

Rupert Purcat

Did you get to read the book? It was awesome. Thankyou and Cheers

Steve H

Yes, in this movie, there is more air on Mars; sry.

Miles E Coburn

Late to the party on this one. Yeah, the storm was pretty much overblown as to its effects. The one thing that drops me out of the movie is the whole Disco music trope. I don't mind Disco. Hell, I lived through it when it first entered the mainstream. I just have a problem that Lewis was the only member who brought music files. Didn't Mark have any of his own? He also got into Johansson's personal computer; she didn't have any? Where did the "Happy Days" video files come from? Wouldn't there be music files along with the videos in some Entertainment folder in the computer? It's doubtful weight or storage space would be a problem. I mean, I've got over a thousand different songs in mp3 format that take up about 87 GB. And that includes copies of the same songs in Playlists. I get they needed something to inject humor into the story. But it just seems improbable the ONLY music available was Disco.

Data does have weight; a stored tweet will weigh a hard drive down by about as much as a large virus. But yeah it's not going to matter much even for space flight. I choose to believe everyone else's choice of entertainment was EVEN WORSE than Lewis's music. (Mark is quite a snob.) (But then, it's fun to watch him gradually turn the beat around despite himself.)

absolutely ♥ this movie!

So, I'm watching this reaction a second time, and I just discovered something I thought you two would find interesting, especially in light of your current Star Trek journey. I just bought the Audible version of the book, and the narrator for The Martian is Will Wheaton! :D George, if you don't remember who that is, he played Gordi in Stand By Me. Simone, you likely know him as Wesley from Star Trek: TNG. If you guys haven't read the book, whether with the Audible version or through kindle, you should check it out. Wheaton does a great job with the reading, and I'm only a chapter in, but the story is super interesting so far.

I just finished watching it with you guys. I am glad you liked it. Next time you watch it, I would watch the extended cut, it adds a few more things from the book that add a bit more about trying to exist somewhere inhospitable to life. Speaking of the book, it is even better than the movie, the internal monologue Watney has with himself is more complex and personality driven than the movie can portray. I have read it several times, I recommend it and the other Andy Weir novels. All of his books have been optioned, so we will get more from him eventually.

One of my favorites also :) I can't think of anything similar. Unless this is not space related, but something about being stranded on an island. Like Cast Away ;)

Luis Torrefranca

Such a good movie! Time to travel from Earth to Mars... months from launch. Time to get an unscheduled emergency launch ready... months to years, depending.

Luis Torrefranca

Note about Matt Damon. Never let him near an airlock. Ever.

Luis Torrefranca

"I need to get on a plane." You're going to fly to where Mark is?!?!

Luis Torrefranca

Signal delay time will vary based on where Earth and Mars are in their orbits around the Sun.

Luis Torrefranca

If it's not on a list, or if you haven't covered it yet, add the series "The Expanse" to react to.

Luis Torrefranca

I think one of the things to just go along with regarding the science in it is the idea of a storm and wind force on Mars that strong. Dust storms happen on Mars, but not like that. We're just asked to go along with it to get that initial problem to kick things off. Many scientists and engineers were consulted regarding the writing of this story. I love the small details that have significant effects, like forgetting to account for the exhaled oxygen when calculating the hydrazine burn rate to keep it stable or whether or not to use one of the two airlocks at the HAB consistently to preserve the integrity of the second one, but wears out the first one faster, or alternate using them so they wear in evenly... the prior leading to the HAB breach because of overworked materials.

Texas Anla'Shok

It's on the DVD special features, but if you can find it there's an extra you should check out called "Ares III Revisited" which is presented as a news program exploring the infighting that was occurring behind the scenes at NASA during the Ares III mission. It fills in some of the gaps at the end, like why Martinez is going into space again despite participating in the "mutiny". The part where Watney is swearing over the chat reminded me of a scene in "From the Earth to the Moon". Some kids have come over to the astronaut training center on a field trip to see the Apollo 12 crew getting ready for their mission, until Pete Conrad, apparently having a bad day, starts swearing so the teacher quietly shuffles her class out.

And now I have to install Kerbal Space Program again...

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Not to besmirch The 5th Element, but this movie will definitely age better, until I guess future, actual Martians are like getting stoned and watching it like it's the Reefer Madness of space travel. Also, yeah, you can't live off of potatoes alone for very long, some guy tried, died. But this is such a great movie, space is terrifying, it's literally exactly where humans are not supposed to be. The balls.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I think people at one time were skeptical about how they seem to "swim" in zero gravity but I'm pretty sure they were using air flow as doors were opened and pressure stabilized.

Mike Henderson

Most realistic Space movie ever is Spaceballs. You need to watch this movie. It will change your life.

TGrimace

For me, it's a lot easier to line up the movie with the video where there's the space between your cameras. Just easier to match the timing of the videos.

Odd Thomas

If you liked Interstellar, The Martian and Arrival you'll love Contact, Sunshine and First Man too!

EMB

Being from Michigan and having visited Canada, I know what a Loonie and Toonie are (I don't know if you spell it that way, I've only heard it spoken). I just find it funny that you have pet names for your coins (ignore our penny, it shouldn't exist anymore anyway) xD

EMB

I love this movie. It makes sense to me that someone leaving video logs, and with lots of work to do that they could maintain some semblance of sanity in such extreme isolation. It helps that he managed to make contact after a few months, and had the kind of personality where he could talk to himself and sort of exist in vlog state. Also as a scientist and astronaut, he had more knowledge to deal with his conditions than the average person. Matt Damon carried this movie so hard. Not that the rest of the cast was lacking, but this really put him in the spotlight like few movies ever could. Loved the reaction

Michael Short

Simone, you must make George watch Star Trek, lol if you haven't already :P

Michael Short

if I recall from reading the book, they brought samples of bacteria etc from earth and he added that to the soil Also. in an interview with a NASA scientist, they said most of it was scientifically correct, except the storms, as george said at the start, Mars' atmosphere is too thin for such a strong storm.

Victor Galea

I hope that, by now, you have both read the book. So many of your very good questions are answered there. Also, there are several more crises that were left out of the movie and some of those shown were actually worse than shown. A couple of good lines were added, especially ,"I'm gonna have to science the shit out of this."
