Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Patreon Version

George was really judgmental towards Luna. BOOOOO! When this was written, tumbler and that archetype didn't exist. She's just meant to be a bit strange.

BangDroid

I had a teacher EXACTLY like Mrs. Umbridge, she even looked like her. So the first time watching this movie was a little triggering, just a little lol

I don't know if someone mentioned it. But, in the books, Umbridge was the one who sent the dementors on Harry at the beginning because she knew Fudge had been wanting to silence/discredit Harry about him saying Voldy had returned.

I keep hearing you commenting on how each movie gets darker and darker. When JK Rowling set out to write the Harry Potter series she wanted to make each book "age" appropriate. So The Philosopher's Stone is intentionally written at a typical 11 year old's reading level and emotional development. By the time we get to The Deathly Hallows the writing has evolved to a typical 17 year old's reading level and emotional development.

Been waiting for this one. So happy to watch this with you. Awesome reaction. My attempt to answer the thousands of questions you guys had for this one, or clear up points of confusion for you, especially those that are not explained in the movie but may or may not be in the books. Dementors are primarily guards for Azkaban Prison, but they are occasionally used elsewhere. What the movie does not explain is that Umbridge was the one who sent the Dementors after Harry. Mrs. Figg (the old woman who came to Harry after the Dementor attack) is a woman who Harry would be dropped off with when the Dursleys went away so that she could take care of him. He's known her all his life, but thought she was an ordinary Muggle. Thus, learning that she knew Dumbledore would have been a huge shock. She is a member of the Order Of The Phoenix who has been set to watch over Harry in secret his whole life. The name Nymphadora is of Greek origin, and it means something like "adorable girl." It's an expression of love from her parents. Tonks hates the name, probably because it sounds the way you guys thought. She prefers to be called Tonks, which is a nickname. Kreature (the house elf at Serius's parents' house) wears a rag for the same reason all house elves do, and the same reason Dobby gave in the second film. House elves can only have proper clothing if their master gives them clothes, which, if they do, would set the elf free. They therefore make clothes out of rags. The ears Fred and George were using to listen into the order's meeting were something they made. They are called Extendable Ears, and yes, they serve the same purpose as cups used to eevesdrop. At the table, Tonks was making different types of noses. Tonks has the ability to change her appearance. I forget what they call it in this universe (Metamorph?) so she was changing her nose into funny shapes for the amusement of the kids. It's done much more effectively in the book. The phone used to get into the Ministry of Magic is controlled and goes down into the Ministry by putting your money in and then pressing a certain series of numbers on the phone, like a code. They show Arthur Weasley putting the money in, but they don't show him putting in the code in the movie, which makes it look too easy to use and like a Muggle could get in. "Truth will out." it means sort of like, the truth will come out or be exposed. I think it might be a more British expression, though. That's an older way of saying it. Fudge's reaction of fear and denying that Voldemort is back can be compared to a government official being told that Hitler is back and trying to recreate world war 2. Not a great comparison perhaps, but I'm trying to illustrate why so many people find it so hard to believe. "So someone on the Ministry is working for Voldamort." A lot of people on the Ministry work for Volddemort. Lucious is getting away with being a Death Eater without anyone doing anything because of how much influence and power he has in the Ministry, because of money, and because there are so many other people he's connected to within the magical government who are also Death Eaters. When Hermione introduced Luna Lovegood in the carriage, you asked what that was about, and "why is everyone being so... (weird with her?)." The "that" I'm guessing you're referring to is the way Hermione said it. She said, "Everyone this is Looney Lo... This is Luna Lovegood." Luna is very unusual girl. It's portrayed better in the books, but she's so odd that a lot people think she's batty, so they call her Looney Lovegood, instead of Luna Lovegood. To be clear, I don't think Hermione was being deliberately cruel or making fun of her. I think the idea is that she's so used to people saying it that it slipped out. As for Harry not going to anyone about Umbridge torturing him. It's the feeling that happens when your abusers are too powerful. Remember, she works for the same government as Lucius Malfoy. Who keeps being able to cover up what he is. And yes, there is infiltration at the school, and someone is keeping the students weak for the reason George said. Umbridge is the infiltrator. If Harry told anyone, it probably feels like they'd be too afraid to act. I think he isn't telling Hermione and Ron because he doesn't want them to get involved or become targets. It's sometimes hard to understand why children don't report abuse, but it's for the same reason a lot of women don't report being assaulted or raped. Fear of not being believed or nothing being done, of the person getting away with it or others being targeted. Oh, and he isn't telling Dumbledore because he doesn't feel like he can go to him with him avoiding Harry all year. Mention of Hagrid being gone from the school was brought up at the start of the school year, at the dinner before Umbridge gave her little speech. One other thing. About Luna being written as the "Not like other girls" character. No she isn't. And by that I mean, Luna absolutely is not supposed to be, and isn't, that character. In your wildest dreams, you can not imagine how not "that" she is. My impression of that sort of character is that it's typically the heroine of a story, as in the main MC, or the love interest of the MC. Luna is neither. The type of character is what happens when an author goes out of her or his way to make a person different or interesting in a lazy way, given quirks for the soul purpose of being different. That's not what Luna is. I think I see why you say that, George. The way she is portrayed in the movie is very different than the books. She's a lot weirder in the books, and it sort of has to do with her dad. He is the editor of the quibbler, the book she was reading upside down. He believes in a lot of strange things, often that no one else can see or believes in (like Nargles), to the point where people think he is kind of nuts. Luna is just like him. The Quibbler is sort of like our National Inquirer, which makes him sort like one of those out there conspiracy theorists, The idea behind him is that sometimes his wild beliefs turn out to be true. There are people out there like him in real life. So he's sort of like the crazy neighbor who thinks people are after him, only they actually are. Luna is an extension of him, but without the paranoia. The reason I think it comes off as contrived in the film is because they took a character that is meant to seem a little off, and Hollywoodized her. In the books, Luna... Well, she's not exactly ugly, but she's not particularly attractive. Usually, the kind of character you're referring to is. Or she's a tomboy an or a warrior, as a way to say how she is not like other sweet gentle girls. They toned down her wackiness and made her prettier because if she was portrayed that way on screen, she would come off as unlikable or too hard to relate to. In the books, Luna actually sort of reminds me of sweeter version of Moaning Murtle, only without the being interested in Harry or making passes at boys. Harry is not interested in Luna, and she is not interested in him. Like, at all. They're just friends who became sort of close because they both suffered loss. By making her more attractive and toning down her wackiness, in the movie, they made her quirkiness come across as just sort of being there. In the book, it feels more natural and well-rounded. Oh, also, no, Hermione and Ron are not a couple. There is something "there", yes. You can tell something is happening between them, feelings are happening, but they haven't made it a "thing." There is a reason explained in the book as to why Voldemort chose to come back when he did, in book 4, but I forget what it is. I think it's a lot of factors. When I tried to look it up, I couldn't get a good answer. When I find it, I will comment on it in the reaction you post at the time. Again, great reaction. Looking forward to the next film.

Also the movies never give a full clear satisfying answer as to why Harry has to return to the Dursely's over summer break or why Dumbledore left him on their front doorstep as an orphaned infant in the first place but somewhere in one of the books Dumbledore explains precisely why Number 4, Privet Drive, Little Winging, Surrey is THE place where Harry Potter is most protected.

So, someone left a reply with some corrections to the things I said in my last comment. The comment is gone now, and I don't want to edit and correct in case Patreon eats my comment, but the person is correct: Tonks is not a nickname, it's her surname. I messed that up. So sorry.

Nate Terry

you blew my mind with the infinite phoenix meat.....!!! lol

remember the scene of sirius family tree, bellatrix lestrange is Sirius cousin, so she killed her own cousin ... rly evil b**ch the whole scene with the tree is worth rewatching you see that dracos mother is also sirus cousin as she is a born black too who married malfoy and Nymphadoras (tonks) mother is also bellas cousin which means that draco malfoy and Nymphadora tonks are both bellatrixs nephew and niece ... the amount of people of the black family, i would love a movie just about the family xD

one of the reasons umbridge feels like such a good vilain for me better then voldemort is like she is "real". there are nearly no evil people for the sake of being evil that doesnt exist and for sure not in power positions. also not for wanting "power" like voldemord since its to easy to get it without being that kind of redicilous evil. but the kind of evil she is are either the ones who think of themself as good, or think of themself as nessaccary and not evil ... for me she fits perfectly in the same category where i put nazis

Xeph

Technically Voldemort himself is based heavily on nazis, he hates muggles because of his father situation which is gone through in the books. The rest of the death eaters also have similar motives as nazis, at least the ones who aren't following strictly out of fear.
