We saw a few different versions to this movie and we went with the Reddit recommendation of the Unrated version; turns out it also meant that it had the credits playing after each segment of the movie.

We will be checking out the theatrical cut on our own just to see how it was edited together, plus we both really loved this movie so we're gonna actually just excited to watch it again 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️

Sin City - Patreon Version

It's really too late now, but this is one film where the theatrical version would have been better for a reaction. Personally I feel having just watched a little bit of the recut, extended, unrated version, I like the theactrical better.

e4tless

so listening to you would be better? so easy to sit back and criticize when people put their work out in public. 🤦‍♂️

djKENTO

yeah bummer this wasn’t the theatrical cut. This version sucks. I mean it’s the same content but the flow of the film is so fucked with all these credits.

Luna Seydoux

They need to stop doing special cuts since streamers don have them and I am not buying every movie they do.

Frank Miller did peak DareDevil comics back in the 80s. He also did The Dark Knight Returns which is an absolute must for any comic book collector (which has been done as a cartoon). The backstory is that Rodriguez was trying to get Miller to agree to the project for years. He finally convinced Miller to visit on the day that he was "test filming" the scene where Josh Hartnett kills the woman in the red dress. Miller was sitting there saying "no... you need them to do it more like this." So Rodriguez looked him in the eye and said "don't tell me, tell them !" Now Miller was directing. Miller is a car nut and this has all of his dream cars getting money shots. Tarantino directed the scene in the car with Jackie Boy for the Princely sum of $1 (Rodriguez whom is Tarantino's best mate scored one of his films for $1 previously). Speaking of their relationship (treat yourselves and look up their interviews on YouTube), Tarantino was on set during the Miho scenes. "Rob... are those MY katanas ?" Quentin asks. "Yeah... sorry ! I stole them out of your garage !" More GEMS from Rodriguez - Desperado / Once Up[on a Time in Mexico and Planet Terror. Both with ensemble casts and this sense of OTT fun that only exists in Troublemaker movies.

Frank Miller did the "300" comic as well, if you haven't watched it yet, you definitely should.

Been a while since I had seen this. And I had never watched the version with all the stories cut together. So while the official director is Rodriguez, Miller was on set every day and was involved in every decision and process. This movie, and it’s sequel, are basically comic books in movie form. The second movie is not well liked by the media. It’s basically more of the same, and does not move beyond the story telling processes of the first. 300 is also a Frank Miller comic, it’s a pretty fun movie. Another “comic book in movie form” would be the full cut of Watchmen, which there are three cuts of that. Theatrical, Extended and Ultimate. Telling you guys the difference between Extended and Ultimate would involve spoilers, so I would suggest watching the Ultimate cut.

E.P.B.F.

As already mentioned "300" was adapted from a Frank Miller original graphic novel and like Sin City it is visually pretty faithful to the source material. Also depending on how you feel about Zach Snyder it's also one of the better Frank Miller based movies. Other adaptations of Miller stories, albeit not original works are: Daredevil (2003), Elektra (2005) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014), which are awful, and The Spirit (2008) which features a similar visual style to Sin City, but is more comedic in tone, The Wolverine (2013), the animated movies Batman: Year One (2011) and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (2013). Those - accounting for subjective tastes - are all reasonably watchable if not good. The Nolan Batman trilogy is also partially based on Miller runs of the comic, and he also co-wrote the scripts for Robocop 2 and 3, which were okay and less so respectively.

EDIT: EPBF fixed his comment, so this is probably redundant ORIGINAL POST: To finish EPBF's oddly cut-off comment, the animated 'Batman: The Dark Knight Returns' parts 1 and 2 are based on Frank Miller's comics, and are a unique take on that oft-treaded character. I don't know if it'd be as spectacularly awesome as the other movies I'd recommend because I find the DC animated movies to be a bit oddly-paced, but you could add that to your list for a dash of variety. Also try Superman in the animated 'Injustice' (not a Miller story) for another interesting taste of reconstructionism, but I've heard this adaptation to movie wasn't done well. Also: I didn't yawn, George, because I thought Simone was yodeling. Although I *did* yawn slightly while typing this sentence, and I'm betting 2 internet bucks you yawned just now too muahaha!

It's too bad they talked you into watching this version; it's missing that interweaving story aspect that makes the film so great, and turns it into a miniseries. But I'm glad to hear you're going to watch the theatrical cut, you'll enjoy it.

Gryff

Maaaaan, special release version are always screwed up, just watch the theatrical release. Reactors want to see movies how 90% of the population probably saw every movie? Just watch the theatrical version.

Githerax

Also also, I finally noticed Simone turned her mic around, it's good! I missed noticing it on Rambo and Chernobyl probably because I'm slow but it's very noticeable here.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

It's too bad that Frank Miller didn't write the Chernobyl miniseries. "Comrade Gorbachev, the reactor core exploded!" Gorbachev: "Yeeesh."

Githerax

"When I saw all the lights on the board go on, I knew what I had to do. I had to die so others would live. Easy choice; the rads were so bad I was probably already dead anyway." *Pulls .45 and blasts the core*

David Noone

So glad you two watched this and enjoyed it so much!

One thing I would be interested in would be rereviews, or some type of quick call backs to your favorite movies. Something short like 5-10 minutes long of things you might have done/learned after the movie. Like if one of you reads the graphic novel, or if you read fun trivia/facts about the film from comments or your own research. Like maybe talking about stuff from first blood for example knowing that the big cliff fall Stallone did the 3rd part of the fall falling through the trees and how he broke a rib so when he shouts in pain that's because he was in pain. Toss in a few more things and have a small reaction video to that i would find enjoyable. I wouldn't want it to be forced either, or recommend it for every reaction. But it could be a fun low edit thing to do for patreon viewers. Like I said i know i would enjoy it, you could even call it CineBites.

Dor

Hey folks, where did you find this version? The only 'Recut, Extended, Unrated' versions I can find (Youtube, Amazon Prime) are only two hours and 8 minutes long and begin with The Big Fat Kill, whereas yours seems to have 13 additional minutes and begins with That Yellow Bastard.

E.P.B.F.

If you want another good Robert Rodriguez movie try From Dusk till Dawn. It even has Quentin Tarantino (as an actor).

Foodassassin4life

It’s the same version they’re watching with all the extra scenes but it’s in a different order and after every segment theirs rolls credits but the one on Amazon/YouTube it doesn’t have the credits till the end. I just watched it like that it was a bit annoying but I didn’t have any problems syncing it up tho so it was still enjoyable

Githerax

Sometimes I forget to recommend stuff because I assume you've seen it, but just for the record, I was rewatching your 'Martian' reaction and thought of: -'Arrival' And on the subject of Denis Villeneuve, also add: -'Sicario' (*not* the sequel, Denis didn't have anything to do with it and it stunk) -'Prisoners' -'Enemy' -'Blade Runner 2049' (after the original 'Blade Runner', ofc) -'Incendies' (in French, subtitles needed)

Haye Zeus

Yeah this is a weird version. Like everyone else I prefer the theatrical. The pacing is not good in this and the context of things makes less sense in some areas. But it’s still fun to watch you guys see this movie

David RedEagle

again another for 300, Quentin's Grindhouse is pretty epic. Its an oddball but if you like Sin City I bet you would like it. And A Dame to Kill for is still good, especially if you like some of the characters.

Simone, I live in LA, so I've had acquaintances, especially through friends who were part of an improv theater, who got national commercials, and I had - I think - the same thing you're having with Alexis Bledel. I'd finally see someone I knew in a commercial, and it looked so wrong, like really bad acting, like surprisingly bad, not like any other commercial actors I'd ever seen. I'd cringe. It just felt like a friend wandered onto a set and tried out acting. Then, however, I met someone - again, through friends' improv stuff - who'd been in a national commercial I'd seen dozens of times a few years prior, which I found out probably the 2nd or 3rd time we hung out, and I had always liked that commercial. It was funny. When I saw it again, I had that same, awkward, something is so off and wrong about this feeling, and I realized it was just like some kind of breaking of the 4th wall. Once I knew the person, seeing them act in a commercial just couldn't work for me. I'd never had a problem with her in those commercials until I hung out with her, had a dinner out with her, saw her do some improv, etc, and then saw it again (it was off the air, so I looked it up and found it on YouTube). I think you're having that same fish-out-of-water feeling, seeing her in a role that doesn't match who you know her to be.

Robert 'Jemimus' Kloosterhuis

As others have pointed out, Frank Miller co-directed the movie. Robert Rodrigez had to win him over and 'A Dame to Kill For' was the test story that convinced him to proceed with more. Frank Miller is in this movie. He plays the priest that Marv 'confesses' to in the booth.. and who is murdered.

Logan Kerlee

Holy shit, this version kicked so much ass! This was my first time watching this. SUPER enjoyed this movie. :)

Logan Kerlee

Oh, and I'm going to throw a complete off the wall/random recommendation out there! This movie's an old one, but it's a sci fi movie that I love. It isn't amazing visually by any stretch, but many who have watched it have enjoyed the movie. I'd like to recommend that you both consider watching Enemy Mine. The movie originally came out back in 1985 - and wasn't widely watched. That's why I don't expect this to be a movie but I'm throwing it out there anyway. :) Hope that you both consider watching it!

E.P.B.F.

I've first watched Enemy Mine a long time ago and had fond memories of it being a pretty good scifi Robinsonade. Then i rewatched it very recently and was rather disappointed. Some parts held up to recollection, in particular Quaid and Gosset,Jr's acting efforts, and of course Barry Longyear's original story, but the rest of it... in the words of Sin City "Yeesh!". It had not aged well, at all, especially the special effects. Even for 1985 they were just inexcusably bad for studio movie with a serious budget (and with cost overruns they spent as much as Lucas did on Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi). *sigh* I dunno. Maybe i'm judging it too harshly because i'm a good deal older now and my tastes and standards have shifted with age, or i had simply been viewing the movie through rosetinted goggles all along since Sci Fi was a pretty niche, under-served market dominated by B-movie schlock back then so as a SF nerd you had to take what you could get and make yourself like it , goddamnit.

Logan Kerlee

You're probably right. I haven't watched the movie in ages. I remember the movie being a bit cheesy way back when.. but I probably am looking at it through rose tinted glasses.

Ron Moses

Rodriguez has so many good films (and a few stinkers) and I'm sure everyone has named them already. But if you want something really gonzo and crazy, check out From Dusk Till Dawn. Go into it as blind as you possibly can. It was written by Tarantino (he also stars in it, and he's actually good) and directed by Rodriguez. Apart from QT it stars George Clooney in the role that pretty much made him a movie star, Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, the inimitable Michael Parks, and god's gift to modern cinema... Danny Trejo. Watch it. And again, avoid any foreknowledge if at all possible.

Ron Moses

I'll half agree with you on Grindhouse. Rodriguez's Planet Terror is excellent and goofy. Death Proof is pretty lame, and even Tarantino calls it his weakest picture.

Diiirk706

Yeh, this was kinda Fkn DUMB for a first watch for someone, very annoying to watch....Who TF ever listens to Fkn Reddit of all things....sigh
