A well made film, but nothing like what we are finding out about UFO/UAP's. These hostile alien movies are becoming dated. The aliens in this film aren't that hostile. Their aircraft don't match any of the actual military accounts or any of the cell phone video documented. As the first one here, I hereby encourage everyone to share their own real life UFO encounters. Begin..

Nice choice to get introduced to the art of Denis Villeneuve’s filmmaking. Since it is unknown to most people, I strongly recommend Villeneuve’s most harrowing movie to date: “Incendies”. I guarantee, this experience will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Mike Dispo

The message Louise relayed to General Shang were the dying words of his wife in Mandarin: "In war, there are no winners. Only widows."

Githerax

Simone, if aliens arrived like this and called out for you to be brought to them, what would you do? Bring chips for George, he'd already be trespassing in the ship. George, regarding 'pointing': Louise established they understood gestures when she reached out and they reciprocated. It showed they had a common sensibility about using their limbs communicatively. Want some more Denis Villeneuve? I've watched 'Blade Runner 2049', 'Dune', 'Sicario', 'Prisoners' and 'Enemy' and they're all great. Everything he's made is great. I want to gush about how brilliantly Villeneuve uses visuals to tell the story. When the entered the tunnel and the gravity orientation changed, it gave a visual parallel to how a person must feel trying to communicate with someone whose language is unknown; completely disoriented. And no exposition- nobody asked Renner's character 'what's going on here?' and Renner spout some sci-fi babble about 'gravitons' or whatever. He just let the characters, and us viewers, see. 'Dune' ought to be seen in theaters first because Villeneuve uses visuals very effectively (kind of how he played visual tricks in the ship's entrance "tunnel" in Arrival to convey disorientation to the viewer.) In Dune he uses scale and it's much more effective at 15 meters than 32 inches.

Great reaction as always :) It's funny how you two react differently. Simone pulling back in fear and almost hyperventilating, while George is leaning forward, his eyes lit up and he's completely fascinated. To me it's really amazing how you two - and especially Simone - can get involved in the movies and get emotional. For me it's always "just a movie" so I don't get scared, sad, emotional or anything... so I'm missing out on a lot sadly. (There are certain types of movies that I'm staying clear off though, as they are things I just don't wan't to see/witness) By the way... you are so wrong about liquorice.... it's goood :) Saying that, I'm pretty sure the aliens weren't actually saying "offer weapon" but was saying "offer liquorice". That's what most intergalactic travellers are here for. LOL Have you two watched Passenges (2016)? If not I would like to suggest it. I think especially Simone is gonna like it.

I cannot stress enough how well this adapted the Short story it was based on "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang. In fact the entire book of short stories it appears in contains some of the most intriguing and thought provoking writing I've ever read. Thanks so much for this one. I plan to watch the full watch-along version with friends.

JLee

'Incendies' is the only one I haven't seen yet. Still working up the courage.

brett hartung

Love the reaction. One of my favorite films another alien film is Contact form 1997 the Jodie Foster & Matthew McConaughey

Githerax

'Passengers' (2016) is lazy, lame, creepy, gaslighting incel shit. Don't put us all through that. Didn't you see how they reacted to 'Arrival'? That's what I want George and Simone to experience; the best of the best. Find good movies to recommend.

Ken Schneyer

Two things: first, I urge, urge, urge you to read Ted Chiang’s beautiful story “Story of Your Life”, on which this movie was based. It is, if anything, more beautiful and more devastating. Second, if you’re interested in seeing Amy Adams in a serious role, I recommend the film “Her”, in which her role is relatively small but still beautiful.

Githerax

Denis Villeneuve is such a master movie-maker. Watch 'Sicario' and I'll link a video that describes how he perfects the tension with the micro-surgical precision of his film editing.

Githerax

Also also, (sorry, love this movie, can't...stop...commenting) did you notice when Denis Villeneuve told us Louise could see through time? 23:56 in your Youtube cut; Jeremy Renner says 'non-zero sum game' in the army camp and suddenly she knows the term in another time-frame and tells it to her daughter. If the daughter was in the future, she would've known the term from having worked with Ian before and would've just answered her. If the daughter was in the past, how did the term reach her there? Either way, the term "time travelled" to whenever Louise was talking to her daughter. But was the daughter in the past, as we naturally assume from the framing of the movie so far? "Science question, ask your father" is the hint. There's only one available male character that's been established so far, and they've only just met. And he's a scientist. Goosebumps indeed, Simone.

Ken Schneyer

On the one hand, this story explores what it would be like to perceive time as a unified whole. (In Ted Chiang's short story "Story of Your Life", on which the film is based, it is eventually clear that Louise sees her entire life, including her own death, at every moment.) What would that do to your notion of free will? To your "serenity," as Simone puts it?

Ken Schneyer

On the other hand, it raises the bigger, more urgent question. All of us know, if we are honest, that love always, eventually ends in grief. We are mortal beings, and, as one poet said, "It is a fearful thing to love what death can touch." We know it, but we hide it from ourselves, because the reality of it is too terrible to bear. Louise cannot hide it from herself. She cannot begin her relationship with Ian without knowing how it is going to end, cannot decide to conceive her child without knowing how she will die -- and yet, and yet, she chooses love anyway. Her courage is breathtaking, but it is, in a sense, the courage that we all have, when we look ourselves truthfully in the mirror.

overdev

wait George havn't watched one of the older Star Trek shows?!

Torsten Maekler

From what we can gather from the episodes, he simply wasn't able to speak and understand English at the time when Trek was good (I must admit though that I thought you would speak English for a longer time. Sounds pretty flawless to me). But watching Trek on this channel... nah, I don't know. As a Trekkie myself I would enjoy, but it would be way too much material. It would block anything else for years... . Or someone compiles a list of top notch episodes for George to watch ("In the Pale Moonlight" or "Inter Arma Enim Silent legis" (both DS9) would be on that list for me anytime) and we can vote on that list... . Anyone?

RocktSurgeon

For what it’s worth I’m pretty firmly on the “I’d like it to be true be highly skeptical” side of any visits so far. The distances are so vast and difficulty/time/resources invested so great that I just don’t see it being a quiet hidden thing for them to arrive. And there are plenty of plausible explanations for all the reports I’ve seen so far. That said, to make it across such a huge distance they would have to be so wildly advanced beyond us and come from such a completely different social history and environment that I also don’t think we could even begin to guess at their motivations of how they would think, so who knows? I -do- think it would be very surprising for there not to be other intelligent life out there, probably many examples much older than we are as a species, but I don’t expect us to meet them in my life time. I’d be very interested to be wrong though!

RocktSurgeon

It’s such a brilliantly subtle way to do it. I honestly think the whole setup with the initial “flashback” is a great way to make you feel a bit of her confusion as the effects of her ability to perceive outside of time ripple out.

RocktSurgeon

I think in a way Contact has a lot in common with Arrival. And with some of the themes of Interstellar as well.

Stretch

George would definately be one of those guys on the roof in Independance day! haha

Martin Nicholls

I keep telling people this movie is smarter than it even knows. George grinning like a kid at christmas through most of it and Simone angry crying was pretty much what I expected - it works on a whole bunch of different levels and different people get different things out of it, but almost everybody gets something. What's more is when you watch it again you often get different things from it depending on mood, sometimes it feeds my nerd science brain and sometimes it feeds my emotional brain. They did a lot of research for this, spent a lot of time with linguists at (mostly Canadian) universities, some of those scientists have spoken at length about that. I love the idea of perceiving the future like one perceives the past (which is the implication) - though I think you'd only let what you see happen if you liked what you saw, but it'd fundamentally change the way humans behave both individually and collectively. In the real world this isn't possible precisely because the future isn't set, but it's fun for an exploration of these things. One day The Expanse is going to win a TV poll and I just know you guys are going to like it, this is a good reminder of that..

Saifu

Glad you guys finally watched another of Denis amazing work, now can we please get that Blade Runner 2049 reaction😂😅

Torsten Maekler

@Martin Nicholls # If they put "The Expanse" back into the next poll, I think we'll get that series. And it will be as much fun for them watching it as it was watching Arrival and Firefly. George will go nuts over the scientific accuracy of the Expanse and Simone will fall in love with the story writing, the characters and the interactions. So, Simone, if you read this and are really serious about writing stories, you should study Expanse (and Battlestar Galactica). How to write and how to carve out superinteresting characters and story arcs is simply phenomenal in this one (and BSG).

Tyler Foster

Now that this has gone up, if the chorus of people who no doubt told you to get to Blade Runner 2049 after Blade Runner wasn't enough, maybe knowing that it is also by Denis Villeneuve will be the clincher.

Dave Gaskin

As a huge BR fan, I was SO nervous when they first announced the sequel. But after seeing Arrival, and they revealed Denis as director, I literally couldn't think of a better choice. I really hope it pops up on here.

Philipp Roensch

The best movie about communication, featuring aliens and time fuckery :D If you want to meet more maybe friendly aliens, you should give District 9 a watch.

Benjerro

'Sicario' is IMO one of his best. I love that movie, definitely worth the watch.

Odd Thomas

Amazing film. I also recommend you guys check out the Jodie Foster film Contact!

Jack Burton

I second Contact. Great reaction film to share with the patreons and toobers.

micah

all of denis' films are outstanding...blade runner 2049 & sicario gotta be on the list

Nick Parker

I am going to second District 9 and Contact. Both are so good.

Torsten Maekler

Some amazing sci-fi suggestions here. One of the next polls should be sci-fi... and don't forget to put Dune 2021 into it...

Robert Cooper

Ok, just to point out that every Denis Villeneuve movie needs to be on the list, "Sicario" is fucking amazing.

Robert Cooper

It is fascinating to me that George does math differently between Chinese and English. I did my first year of college in Italy, and I joke that math and CS courses were the same.

Githerax

They should do a poll of Villeneuve movies, then do all of them.

Githerax

I think Chinese men do math in base 11 instead of decimal, because you know why. Amirite. George, confirm.

pichi4ever

Please... if you want to see Amy Adams, in an other serious roll....you HAVE to watch "Nocturnal Animals" Amazing movie, and performance by Amy an Jake Gigenhall,

Alex Ch

For “non-floofy” Amy Adams, I think The Fighter would be a very good next step.
