This show is just amazing. We need more.

The war stories episode reminds me of the old days playing Golden Eye

If you remember the New Horizons probe getting our first close look at Pluto in 2015, it's a very cool story about rocket science. It launched in 2006 on a path that would take it 2.3 million km from Jupiter for a gravity boost and then within 12,500 km of Pluto. 12,500 km of where Pluto would be in 2015, you realize. This is why we say rocket science is hard. They had to calculate all that from the launch cause the probe doesn't carry a lot of fuel for course corrections. They left the thing in freefall for over 9 years and put it just close enough to Pluto to get some good pictures but not so close it got trapped in its gravity well. (Now it's out taking pictures of the Kuiper belt.) That's a bit like Wash dropping Serenity at that airlock from 6000 miles huh. Probably more impressive. But we do have to use actual rocket scientists to have anything to compare Wash's piloting skills to.

I assume the reason Mal had to take 'Saffrron' with him in the escape - besides the plan to shut her in the trash bin for the authorities - was because she didn't tell them who her fence was.

Bekka NoyB

Zoe's a tough chika! What a moment with River! That scene at end! LoL :D

Writers strike was 2007. During that time Joss Wheedon made a independent little film with Nathan Fillion and Neal Patrick Harris called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog. It is short and hilarious. Also, the Fox executive that green lit Firefly was replaced by an executive who didn't care about the project. It was run out of order and preempted three times by sports. It was also in the Friday Night death time slot where shows went to die. So, perfect storm.

Torsten Maekler

George, are you now proficient in war strategy, after studying 孫子? Wondering how extensive you do learn history in China? I guess it might be as selective as it is here in the West and if one wants to have a more complete picture one has to go digging... .

JayF

FYI, I did not get the email notification that these had been posted. Not sure if that's true for everyone or if Gmail is just being "special" this morning. Love your reactions. Keep up the great work! Also George, your opening joke reminded me of an old George Carlin joke. "You know why marijuana hasn't become legal? Nobody can remember where they left the petitions."

Onno Smits

I also did not get an email notification this time, strange. EDIT: It arrived 2 hours later.

Might I suggest when you do episode 14 you also do the behind the scenes of Firefly? So it would sorta be like a second episode. Even if you don't record your reaction you should still watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLy_g1-ED1E

Togre

I would also suggest the River Tam Files as a short but very interesting post-show, but pre-movie bit of viewing.

Torsten Maekler

Remember that this show was supposed to be longer. They stopped production mid-season one. So not everything will be resolved. The movie Serenity wraps up some stuff, but not everything. So prep for some loose ends...

William

Great reaction guys, really enjoyed. One of my favourite all time shows. No spoliers but the film is awesome

War Stories is a treasure chest of great one liners, badassness and some surprising twists.

People used to shorter series now, don't realize that a show like "Firefly" would normally have had 22-26 episodes per season and that often, as in the case with "Firefly", they weren't even done writing the season, much less an actual season finale, when it was canceled.

Davide Figus

During the 2007 writers' strike, Whedon came up with the idea to make the musical Dr. Horrible's sing along blog. The main reason why Firefly was canceled is that Fox decided to air the episodes not in chronological order. Train Job aired as the first episode instead of the pilot. The series that aired at Firefly's place was Dark Angel. Another tv show, underrated and canceled prematurely after two seasons.

Robert 'Jemimus' Kloosterhuis

Dr. Horrible's sing along blog is a cute short little musical that is well worth reacting to on its own :) Nathan Fillion (Captain Mal), Neil Patrick Harris, and the Queen of Geekdom herself; Felicia Day (who also starred in Buffy for 2 last seasons)

Florian Hoyer

they did NOT cancel it after season 1 ... they did cancel it after i dont remmeber episode 9 or somethign and no even aired the rest xD also as formerly known all episodes was in the wrong order anyway xD

Eleven

3 more episodes and then the movie Serenity!

what would you guys think about the TV series Heroes?

Alan Kobb

A lot of people oversimplify why Firefox was cancelled. It's a tale of two subsidiaries of Fox. Joss Whedon had done Buffy and Angel working with 20th Century Fox studios, a suibsidiary of 20th Century Fox. They loved him and gave him a development deal that called for him to make several shows and movies. His first TV idea was Firefly. He pitched it, and Fox Studios took it. 20th Century Fox also owned a TV network called the Fox Network. At the time, the management of these companies didn't exert much control over them. The network wanted to run Whedon's productions, but was not sold on Firefly, but since he hadn't made anything else yet, the studio insisted that the network run Firefly. Since the management at the network was not in love with the idea, they put it on a bad timeslot. It ran on Friday nights. Friday is sometimes known as the "Death slot" because most young people don't watch TV on Friday nights. In addition, Fox had a contract to air games of the World Series, and most of those games were on Fridays, so Firefly was pre-empted frequently. If they were serious about Firefly they would have delayed the premiere until after the World Series was concluded so it would air consistently, but they instead treated it as filler, which also explains the out-of-order airing. (So, the weird order was not a plan in itself, but a by-product of how the network was using the show.) In the end, most of the youth that would have loved it wasn't home to watch, and those who did often didn't know when it was on. As you can imagine, this is not a recipe for success. The network was able to cancel this show that they didn't want, but Joss Whedon also told Fox Studios that he never wanted to sell a property to Fox again. Of course that isn't what happened. Fox also made a deal with Eliza Dushku, and she turned to Whedon to make Dollhouse. Fox actually wanted that series specifically to keep the audience from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which was ending, but it received marginal ratings in it's 2nd season.

Michael Short

you guys need to watch the movie Dune :)

Bobby Powell

After the series ended there was a series of comics and graphic novels. One of these tells Book's backstory. Hint/Spoiler: You'll understand more if you wait until after the movie to look into it.

Endling_king

in reference to the writers strike you mentioned you should really check out the show "burn notice" its an amazing show that aired during the strike and it did great! had several seasons as well as a spinoff straight to dvd / tv movie. "the fall of Sam Axe"

Spooky Dooky

I freaking love you guys man.....

Valyrian

When I rewatch this series, after episode 11 I then watch 14, 13 and finish on 12. The cast found out the show had been cancelled whilst filming 12 and it does give off an end of series vibe.

Logan Kerlee

I'm all for that! I loved that show and would like a reason to rewatch it. Plus hearing other people's perspectives on the show would make me very happy.

Kron0n

The only reason I thought of to take her is she'd rat them out immediately. She knows the ship etc.

Kaizen

"Trash" is growing on me as a new favorite episode after "Our Mrs. Reynolds." Devil woman!

Eleven

oh god- the violin on that scene- i think i know which one on 12--?

Chris Lüders

Right, the reason for cancelling the series is pretty simple. They were incompetent back then and they're incompetent today ... in terms of series. In other business fields they are obviously successful ( -> sports), however I don't watch anything there and let's say there are different opinions about the quality (-> 'news') anyway. Still, it was a shame how miserably they treated their own series and the people who made it. There are similarities with 'Lucifer' which they also ditched 'due to low ratings' and similar BS. But after enormous fan protests it was picked by Netflix, advanced to the most successful netflix series (according Nielsen ratings - and I have no idea what they rate exactly) and got 3 more (although fewer episodes) seasons. In my opinion 'Lucifer' has the same high level as Firefly or Battlestar Galactica in terms of story & character development, screenplay, acting, dialogues, soundtrack etc, but of course tastes are different. 😉 However, FOX messed up here as well. 🙄

Fox cancelled a lot of great shows in he early 2000’s they shouldn’t have. A personal favorite being the sitcom “Titus”, which, oddly enough, you can now watch for free on YouTube thanks to the shows creator, comedian Christopher Titus. Thankfully they weren’t stupid enough to cancel “24”, an awesome drama series I highly recommend.

James Wilson

Gail Berman cancelled Firefly. If I had an enemies list, she would be on top. Maybe I should make one just for her.... Anyway, in addition to the reasons Alan Kobb stated regarding why Firefly did so poorly, the marketing team at Fox was also completely inept at marketing the show. They made it look like a ridiculous silly comedy. Remember the tag line you read before watching the first episode? "Meet the most spaced out crew in the galaxy." Your first thoughts were that it was a comedy, that they were bad at their jobs, stoners in space, etc. The rest of the marketing was similarly misleading. Anyway, I really enjoy your reactions, and you're both hilarious.

Richard Hodgetts

Nathan Fillion was renowned for playing jokes on set. The crew's speechless reaction when he's naked at the end of Trash was helped by the fact that they weren't prepared for him to be wearing a photograph of Joss Wheadon's grinning face, over his junk.

Alan Kobb

Thank you for complementing my post. Now if you had only gotten the points that I had made. You've put the cart before the horse. Gail Berman cancelled the show because of low ratings. The show didn't get low ratings because of lousy marketing. The show got low ratings because it was in a lousy time slot and was constantly cancelled due to baseball. It was set up for failure, and marketing cold not have changed that. You can hate Berman for setting Firefly up for failure, but the fact is, the decisions that doomed Firefly were made long before it aired. I also think Joss should have fought for a better slot. Before being head of the television division, Berman was an Executive Producer for Buffy and Angel and had worked closely with Whedon. I'm not sure why she let him get screwed this way or if she just convinced him that it was the right slot, but it was absolutely the wrong time for the show.
