The Expanse: Season 1 - Episode 1 & 2 - Patreon Version

Comments

Guylaen O'Connor

I loathe anyone who doesn't think the first season is the best. When Miller (spoiler), the show is still good, but it loses something of the soul that it had before.

Rav Low

I know I'm a little lat e to the party here, but a lot of the beef you guys have with the crew I think, really is that they're more like real people than likeable characters. Like yeah, people complain without any actual suggestions or solutions *all the time*. People in high stress/likely death situations are often extremely cruel and mean to each other. Y'know. People are assholes.

Rav Low

I'd also say that some actions should reveal some basic traits for you to know about those characters. Amos is a sociopath. Alex is a goofball. Holden is rash. Naomi is calm and clever. Miller is a cynic. Etc. But it's also a very different style than, say, firefly which gives us the anchor starting point of "Mal and Zoe were in this war and they lost." Firefly also had the benefit of basically a feature length TV movie to establish characters, and also frankly doesn't do anywhere near as much world building as The Expanse does (which is okay, it's not as important. Firefly is Low Concept and character focused imo).

Kyle Liquori

Just popped in before I start watching this with you two to say that Amos is one of the greatest tv characters of all time. I know you're only 2 seasons in but I always loved his level of self awareness and how he navigates life knowing who he is and what he's capable of. All imma say besides that is..... "You're not that guy doc"

Śéáń

Only watching the intro as I won't be able to actually watch the show until this evening, but one detail in this series is that physics is almost always fairly realistic. e.g. There's no magic gravity (edit: ok, maybe a little) on the ships, the gravity is due to the ships acceleration - the decks are perpendicular to the ship's direction, all layered like a skyscraper propelled horizontally, so as the ship moves forward, the people are pushed down towards the floors. During that latter half of the flight, the ships flip around so that the deceleration does the same job on the approach. The sci-fi magic is still applied in the fictional "Epstein Drive" that allows for a constant thrust in the ships while maintaining a desired velocity, but I love the creativity

Robert Cooper

Man, if I were you, I would have skipped the first season and a half. :p

Robert Cooper

To say there's no magic gravity... It's generated by the acceleration of the... magic engines. :P

Dor

I know some folks think S1 takes a few episodes to hook them, but this is... maybe the worst advice I've ever seen :P

JH

You guys finally did it!!!! Ohhh sheeit! Lmao I can wait till you guys really cut in to this series…

redddfer44

Cool nails, Simone! I don't have time to rewatch the first season, but I hope you guys enjoy it!

Shannanr

The Wire is one of the top shows ever, seems like they avoiding it

Luis Torrefranca

Fun fact, The Expanse was originally supposed to be a computer game.

Luis Torrefranca

Also, there are online resources to look up the Belter language words and phrases. To start with, “…lowda” refers to people. E.g., “Beltalowda”… people of the Belt. “Inyalowda”… people of the inner planets (Earth/Mars).

AdmiralZhou

Yesssssss! The Expanse is my favorite show

Luis Torrefranca

Also, when Belters are talking, take note of their use of hand gestures. It’s kinda part of Belter communication. Adds to their history.

Chris Lüders

Oh yes, I totally forgot about the talking and gesticulating of the belter. 😂 Have fun finding out all the things. 😎

Lemons

Oh hell yeah! My favorite show! You guys are in for a ride.

George Baxter

Does anyone know when Serenity is coming out?? I thought this was the old firefly timeslot

Dor

Couple of things I'll throw out there (no spoilers, promise) re: the first couple of episodes: 1) You are not the only ones to not love the initial group dynamic. It's a key reason folks sometimes bounce off the show before episode 4, which is where most people say it really starts to jive for them. 2) You're not wrong, Miller (the detective) is definitely kind of a dick. 3) re: the adversarial dynamic, there ARE reasons everyone is behaving the way they are, it's just not always something that you catch on first watch. • No one really wanted to be on this rescue mission in the first place - it cost them all time and money, put them at risk, and now it got a bunch of their friends (and maybe them) killed. • Jim Holden (discount Jon Snow) was supposed to be in charge, but lost a lot of credibility after the Canterbury exploded because he emotionally insisted on chasing the ship that did it (almost certainly a death sentence) instead of trying to preserve the lives of the remaining five. • Naomi, the engineer with the mohawk, expressed annoyance that Holden kept getting promoted over her before all this happened. Then she found out he got them into this by logging the distress call. Then he tried to chase the bad guys until she physically stopped him. After all that you notice she's over Holden's shit, taking charge, and just trying to make sure they can survive. • Amos (the guy with the gun) pretty clearly respects Naomi and will do whatever she says. He clearly doesn't give a shit about Holden or the former hierarchy, he just wants to live and Holden keeps getting in the way of that (trying to chase the bad guys, sending a message that will antagonize Mars, etc). He doesn't seem opposed to killing somebody if Naomi thinks it is the right thing to do (so far she doesn't). • Alex (the pilot who almost runs out of air) is a pretty easygoing guy and doesn't seem to have an issue with anyone so far. • Shed (the doctor who almost died) seems to be kind of neurotic and prone to freaking out. He definitely didn't want to be there. So yeah. Right now the dynamic is basically 'Holden is trying to be in charge but be keeps doing risky things no one else agrees with so Naomi/Amos are over his shit.' I'll finish by noting that, while the show is generally a very faithful adaptation of the novels, this intra-crew bickering is a place where it isn't - they added it in to try and generate more conflict in the opening episodes and basically no one is a fan. Hang in there, by episode 4 they are back on track.

E.P.B.F.

I would advise you to go beyond the first season in your reactions since one season of the show does not correspond to one of the books. The story of the first book for example carries over into the first half of second season ending with S02 E5 "Home". Also the show only starts to hit its stride by mid-season 2. The second half of the season 2 and season 3 are really the sweet spot of the entire series imo, and i'm not saying that just because that's when my second most favourite character Camina Drummer starts to come into her own (number one and three being Amos Burke and Klaes Ashford respectively).

redddfer44

This is the series timeslot, I think? But they're doing it this week.

SOG78

Nice. Been hearing good things about this, but never seen it!

Luis Torrefranca

I still love the dramatic music around what amounts to turning around, albeit hard.

Trepanation21

Really nice show! So nice in fact, that I'll be watching it entirely through *yet again* now that I know these goobers are doing a watch! Additionally, the novels are fantastic, written by two authors under one name (Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham as "James S.A. Corey"), and Ty Franck writes for the show, is one half of the show's official podcast, and is assistant to George R.R. Martin. HNNNNG.

Luis Torrefranca

Re: “big hole in the side”. Simone made me wonder if my audio went out of sync for a second.

Śéáń

It stemmed from a ttrpg that the writers were playing that they then turned into a book. A couple of scenes in the first season are taken directly from their sessions in the game (two abrupt scenes in the show stand out to me as decisions made by the players at the time that they kept in)

Luis Torrefranca

Ah, good. Gonna be following the adventures of the Canterbury and its crew… oh.

E.P.B.F.

Dulcinea is a reference to Dulcinea del Toboso, the name of the lady the eponymous protagonist in 16th ct. spanish author Miguel de Cervantes' famous novel 'Don Quixote de La Mancha' professes to serve (and whom he in his madness mistakes a neighboring farm girl, Aldonza Lorenzo, for). There are a _lot_ of references to Don Quixote being made throughout the show because as we later find out it was the favorite book of male lead James Holden when he was growing up in Montana, and he strongly identified with its hero clinging to knightly virtues in the face of decidedly unchivalrous reality.

Luis Torrefranca

Need to subject George to 40 Days/40 Nights. The actor playing Julie Mao kinda bears some resemblance to Shannyn Sossamon.

Florian Hoyer

i know u like to make breaks after seasons but PLEASE DONT do it here at the "normal" point. Book 1 of expanse is season 1 and season 2 the first half. so if u end after season 1 u basicly end 2/3 into the book without the final of the book xD after that every book ends like mid season 3 mid season 4 mid season 5 xD so no good idea to ever end at a season end xD

Thomas Yanez

In a couple of seasons, they should come back and watch this reaction again. So much complaining about what's being done and shown on purpose.

Luis Torrefranca

Amos “should I pop him?” Burton is an interesting one.

Florian Hoyer

the show is hyper realistic. its a small ship and they opened the door xD there was no oxygen sucked out they los tall pressure ... yes its true that air isnt sucked out trough a small hole instantly but if u open a big door ... the air is out in a few seconds also you will know the characters soon i mean there are basicly what 5-6 to know only

Florian Hoyer

I think you have a few missunderstandings, there is no war between mars and earth its dangerous that there could break out a war but there is no war. also she said that "we know the distress call was real" ... but we dont, we know it was fake and it was planted in the little box on the scopuli as a trap ... the recording was maybe real but the planting there was for sure a trap

AC10

Let me try to give some of you a little perspective as to how hard it is for these ships to "just turn around" at the speeds they are traveling in this show... Forgive me if my math is not 100% correct. These ships accelerate at a continuous speed until they reach the halfway point of the trip... and turn around and decelerate at a continuous speed for the 2nd half of the trip. That is how they create gravity. The floor is sideways to the direction of travel. Acceleration/Deceleration pushes them "down" to the floor. The mag boots are used anytime they are not accelerating/decelerating. Imagine you get in your car to drive to work 30 min away and you turn out your driveway and start accelerating and never stop accelerating until you are half way to work. How fast would you be going? For simple math lets say your car accelerates at 100 km/h every 6 seconds (your car is not that fast driving to work normally). In 6 seconds you are going 100 km/h, 1 minute 1,000 km/h, 15 minutes (half way there) 15,000 km/h. OH CRAP you forgot your phone. Now to just turn around and go back home you need to spend another 15 min decelerating at the same speed just to reach 0 km/h.... and you are twice as far away from home (all the way to work) as you were when you decided to turn around and go back. You would need to turn around and decelerate/accelerate at 300 km/h (3 times as fast) just to get back home in the same 15 min it took to get half way to work in the 1st place. (I think my math is right). Space is hard. I like that this show tries to base what you are seeing deep within our reality. The technology is just a few decades or a century or two ahead.

Torsten Maekler

When Simone described she needs the mag boots and gloves as well to climb metal buildings, I was thinking of... oh wait, that would be a spoiler :-)

Pajander

Saying that this or that character is alive during whatever season, or that they become a "favourite character" is a spoiler. Just let them watch the show.

Pajander

Nope, season 3 ends where book 3 ends and after that it's one book per season.

JaneyN Guam

Maybe I'm just not that deep, but for the life of me, I just could not get into this series. Believe me, I tried... like four times. I just couldn't. Now, on the other hand... where is the Serenity movie reaction?

Pajander

There's no reason for them to be instant buddies. They're just randomly picked co-workers from a crappy job and their workplace just got literally nuked. Also I guess nobody told them they're main characters on a TV show.

Blacky

Did I miss the Serenity coverage??

Pajander

The nice thing about that is that travel time doesn't increase linearly with distance since with more distance you have more time to accelerate to ridiculous speeds by the midway point. Sadly, even if we had the Epstein drives from the show, burning for that long and that hard would absolutely melt the engine and the whole ship. I'm guessing the Epstein drive uses magnetic fields to direct the exhaust, but some of the energy produced by the fusion reaction will always come out as neutrons and photons and those can't be redirected with magnets, so they will just heat up the engine and the ship and it's very hard to get rid of excess heat in a vacuum. The ships would at least need to have huge ass radiators sticking out all over the place. Still, it's the best depiction of sci-fi space travel I've seen anywhere on TV or in movies, way better than anything else.

Robert 'Jemimus' Kloosterhuis

You will eventually end up closer to this crew than the Firefly one. And I am speaking as a Browncoat. Just give it time.

Pajander

The water he's pouring flows like that due to the Coriolis effect. Ceres station has pseudogravity (centrifugal "force") from the spinning asteroid. The station is built inside the asteroid and "upside down", so that everyone's feet are pointing towards the surface. Or at least that's how I understood it.

Monica Alarcon

You guys need to watch Breaking Bad... put it up in a poll it will surely get the most votes....

Shea Eiland

Recommend watching with subtitles just so you can understand the belter creole better.

Monica Alarcon

I don't know why phones and tablets in sci fi shows are transparent... sure they look cool but it's not practical... they would be harder to read and everybody can see what you're seeing... who wants that?

JayF

This is my second attempt to get into this series. You two are having some of the same issues that led to me giving up on it after episode 2 on my last attempt. It's like Firefly without any likable characters, humor, or explanation as to how we got here. But it's free because I have Amazon Prime for other stuff so I'll watch with you until hopefully it takes a turn.

Joits

Watching two episodes isn't enough. If you get through the first season at least, and you still don't have any likeable characters... then this show is not for you.

Camron J

Omg had no idea you guys were gonna watch this, probably one of my favorite tv shows of all time

POSTALMNDCLARITY

This show is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! You have to push through the first few episodes but PLEASE TRUST ME that it takes off and never looks back! This show literally has multiple seasons at 100% on RT! Please just keep on it and I PROMISE you will love it! The character growth is insane!

Miah

You've convinced me to give it another shot. I watched the first two episodes a year or so ago and it didn't grab me so I never continued. I've noticed a ton of reactors watch this show and I always hear great reviews so I guess it's just one that takes a few episodes to hook you.

Ghostwriter

One neat thing about the extensive world-building in The Expanse is how much the world-building shapes the character development and character motivations. As Simone so aptly put it, "We're all just products of our environment, right?"

lastsplash

I can tell you're both kinda disappointed but it gets so much better! Promise!

Adverb

I think it tough moving from Firefly to the Expanse. I honestly can't think of a series that starts better than Firefly. The show knows who its characters are and its tone from the first episode. Everyone is very distinct and likable and every episode is great. Meanwhile, the Expanse starts a little shaky. The characters seem a little thin, and not very likable at first, but it becomes very good through season 1 and great from season 2 on.

Pajander

Just based on these first two episodes: I'm sure Simone knows how annoying it can be to have a lawful stupid paladin in your party!

Kaizen

I think Season 1 is a fun ride, glad they are on to The Expanse!

Torsten Maekler

The transparent pads in the Expanse do create very solid displays - either holographic or directly over the pad. So there is little issue with readability (so the cgi department did its job well). What I find more interesting in those pads is that they can display beyond the physical limits of the pad itself. Very interesting idea and would be a great addition to our pads of today...

Luis Torrefranca

Not to mention they're hours away from suffocation with seemingly no one who can help. They either don't know what to do and are terrified and/or disagree with what needs to be done to survive. And if the lack of air doesn't kill them, there are pirates possibly around as well as the looming threat of war and, oh look... the MCRN (Martian Congressional Republic Navy) flagship. Oh yay.

Kron0n

There's a lot of information to take in the first few episodes. Characters get developed over time.

Sean Murphy

Maybe it's lifestyle or location but I've known a lot of people in my city who act like this crew. Always with some snip or rude comment, passive aggressive personalities are a common thing here. Given their situations they live with in the show I just assumed they did a great job of placing the characters in the lore.

Tomas

Stick through it, and it'll only get better. First season was the hardest to get into imo, just cause there are som many characters and stuff that happens that made it kind of overwhelming, but as it progresses and you get to know the characters better, it gets pretty awesome.

Cory Stanish

I bounced off this show a couple of times when people kept recommending it. Then someone told me to make sure I watched up until at least episode 3. And they were right, I hit episode 3 on my third attempt to watch the show and then I just didn't stop. Couldn't stop. Having gone back and watched it all again, I can't even specifically say what it is about episode 3 specifically.

Lemons

I personally love the first season, but I know a lot of people who don't. It can be tough to get through, but I promise it picks up in the second half of the season and then it just gets a lot better and better in the following seasons. The first season is mostly world building and introducing the factions, but it's something you'll appreciate once you get past it.

Johann Du Toit

Yeah, what a tough audience! :-) George and Simone complaining that Firefly is more realistic! Agree on the air thing - they removed a whole wall on the small shuttle! And the engine sound during the flip doesn't bother me - I always just image it's what it sounds like while on the ship, where the vibrations carry and there is air inside.

Lloyd S.

I'm excited for this series for you guys, this put me over the edge and had me sub.

Alan Kobb

Dulcinea (Dull-sin-A-ya) is from Don Quijote. Don Quijote is an ordinary man who imagines that he is the bravest knight, and he invents her in his imagination as the perfect woman for himself. She is the most beautiful princess. Your Dulcinea would be the most perfect person for you to love. I've never watched this before. My first reaction, like yours is difficulty telling the characters apart. I think it's because I don't feel any attachment toward them. They seem a bit dry and even though their situation seems interesting, they don't particularly interest me. Because of it's popularity, I'll stick with you for another episode or two, but I'm not holding out much hope for this keeping my interest past that. At some point I may just lose interest.

Amber A

This show can take a while to get off its feet, the first season's a bit of a slower burn while it sets the stage for everything that is to come. It's still a very great season, eventually, but it takes a while for things to really kick into gear. I think I had two or three false starts before I finally got through the first 3 episodes in my third or fourth attempt. From there on out, I was hooked. Also, yeah, this isn't a fast-tracked found family situation like with Firefly. They hint at pretty high turnover in the first episode, so people generally don't stick around long enough to form bonds. It's the reason why Holden was promoted, because he stuck around. Then they get into a high risk rescue situation, led by Holden, who handpicks each of them, so you can imagine they're not happy about the situation (late to ceres, losing money, stuck in a tiny rust bucket). And as things go to shit, Holden projects his guilt and grief and anger, and that only flares frictions, which Naomi picks up on since she's aware of what he did. All in all, the situation on the Knight is stressful and the opposite of fun, with a bunch of people who probably don't know each other well at all, aside from Naomi/Amos.

Abush

Love that you've started this. Became a patron for this show. It's my favorite sci fi show of all time. The book series is top 5 book series off any kind for me. The show takes its time world buildind to ensure you get that "baked in and lived in " feeling. Also, One of the show runners is an Astrophycist so the show makes a point to get the science right. Like there's no artificial gravity in the show, hence why they use mag boots. There's two ways to generate gravity in space. One is using acceleration of the ships, aka thrust gravity. When you accelerate in one direction, you feel a force pushing you in the opposite direction. The other is Spin gravity, which is how you have gravity on asteroid Stations like Ceres station. When you spin the outside of something, you have the centripetal/centrifugal force pushing you towards the center, which is why for example Miller was pouring the alcohol and it came out weird. As a long time engineer, i can attest whacking on stuff to fix stuff is very legitimate way of making things work and cooperate.

EmwunGarand

just pledged for this. You won't regret picking up this show. Stick with it, it only gets better.... much, much better

Ro Med

Just because you asked, cause is not really important so far, Dulcinea is the woman that Don Quijote was in love with, from the Spanish book The ingenious gentleman Don Quijote de la Mancha, it's pronounced Dull-see-neh-ah, with the enphasis on the Neh :)

Viilutaja

The Expanse maybe easily one of the best sci-fi shows ever made. Different than FireFly which I loved and saw back in 2005. But the Expanse set pieces, details to the world, the story and character arcs are so good! It feels like Game of Thrones, but in the space! :)

Scott Fellows

That Belter ate a mushroom. Vat grown foods and mushroom/soybean based foods make up thr bulk of the Belter diet. Him eating that mushroom is like you plucking an apple off of a tree.

Jasper Collins

If you're interested the weird drink that Miller poured was moving strange because of the Coriolis force because Ceries the Asteroid they live in is actually spinning to create gravity. This show has a lot of stuff for Physics Nerds

Logan Kerlee

I'm just now jumping into this show with you guys. I'm digging it! lmao, how'd you mess that name up? xD Kahlan never sounded like that to me. :P Love that you've read a bit of the series though. It's great stuff! :D

Logan Kerlee

Jumping into this late - but I'm digging it! Haven't watched all of the series before so I'm stoked to be watching it with you both. :) Hoping that other episodes don't have the timer issue that this one had.

Ridor

This is a slow burn show for the first four episodes. Setting the stage so to speak. But once it gets rolling, damn is it amazing. It also makes space legitimately scary. So much can go wrong.
