The Expanse: Season 1 - Episode 9 & 10 - Patreon Version

Torsten Maekler

Was wondering why we got no Polls. Arcane... good choice :-)

Jeff I.

I'm really looking forward to Arcane in a couple of weeks. I'm generally not one for animated shows, but it hooked me after the first couple of episodes with the interesting characters and the amazing animation style. Hope you have a great vacation, Simone!

JayF

Super excited for The Wire here! I haven't watched Arcane yet as I didn't have Netflix when some other channels reacted to it. I'll give it a shot along with you.

Śéáń

I must get back to Arcane. Excited for The Wire also, gives me a reason to rewatch it after all this time. It's another that takes a few episodes to pick up, least if all to get used to the dialogue, but it's so expertly crafted. You'll see a lot of facial faces in there too. Can't wait.

redddfer44

THE WIRE. NOICE. I've been meaning to rewatch it but the damn PAL framerate prevents me from watching it simultaneously.

AC10

I've been wanting to watch Arcane with you two for a while now.... (even though it doesn't matter).

Holden: We just got hit with a mega-dose of hard radiation. Simone: How did he know? The yellow and black triangle symbol on the door and on the nearby walls is the universal "radiation hazard" symbol. The UI to open the door contained a yellow "caution tape" design along the outside borders, and another radiation symbol at the top of the screen. There are head-high lights at the entrance to the door. They are all yellow. When the "high energy event" happened the yellow caution tape turned to red, the head-high lights at the door turned from yellow to red, as did the radiation symbol at the top of that UI. There were four visual indicators that entering that room was a terrible idea. Everyone in the solar system *except* Holden and Miller would have avoided that room -- almost as if it were highly radioactive.

Trepanation21

In Ep 9 when Jim separates from Naomi to follow Miller, his motivation is 1) He wants to know what the fuck happened to the Canterbury overall, following the thread, and 2) Jim has a bit of a naive "knight" complex. Remember when his mother literally said that he wanted to be a knight when he grew up? Now, Jim doesn't fancy himself a hero *AT ALL*, but he *does* try to be a force for good, he believes in truths and accountability - he tries very hard to act with integrity, and his personal safety rarely affects those choices. The Cant incident is the start of this personal commitment for him. While the rest of the crew feels like they're in over their heads, Jim doesn't always realize (or care) that his toes can't touch the bottom. It helps to think of the Roci crew as like, a D&D crew. Jim isn't "the leader" (nor does he want to be - remember when he declined his promotion on The Cant?), but he does want to take charge if he feels he needs to when he feels accountability should be necessary. Each member of the team has the ability to make their own choices (hence their... chaotic bond...), they're not compelled or otherwise bound by rank or structure other than that which their personal moral code or views compel them to be as a baseline... But they *do* find ways to grow together (and for themselves) amid this chaos.

Joe

It is a shame it is going to be so long before you get back to this. Season 2 (&3) of The Expanse is so amazing, but you are going to probably need a refresher of all the small details from S1 if you take that much time away from the series.

Joe

Doing the right thing is what a hero would do. 90% of all movies and shows wouldn't happen if the main character wasn't a good guy, trying to do the right thing. Also, we learned when Avasarala visited Holden's mother. She said he grew up wanting to be a hero and imagining himself as a knight. That is why he joined the Earth Military, but then became disillusioned and left for deep space, trying to get away from everything, until he is "forced" back into action by the events at the beginning of the show (logging the distress beacon).

Gaius Frakking Baltar

"We just got hit with a mega-dose of hard radiation." "How bad?" "3.6 roentgen. It's the equivalent of a chest X-ray."

Luis Torrefranca

As drawn out as the conversation between Avasarala and Holden's mom seemed, it gave us a lot of information about everyone involved. Their mindset, outlook, tendencies, etc. It was much more than that one line from Avasarala afterwards.

Alan Pownall

Miller recognised the scientist from the recording Julie had hidden in her hamster. Going solely off what thee show has shown us so far; The reason for Holden consistently doing a difficult thing based upon a, sometimes scant, moral justification is because that was how he was raised. In the episode with his mum she basically says they involved him in all their moral crusading against the government and set him up to continue that until she pretty much blew his world up by telling him to leave the day before his 18th birthday. He has now found another cause he feels obligated to do something about and his character won't let him let things lie, infact the more difficult the choice the more right it will feel to him because doing the right thing is hard was drilled into him by his parents.

Daniel Popp

For a lot of your questions to be answered, you’ll need to watch until the end of episode 5 of season 2. That will cover the translation of the first book to tv series. Whether or not you make reaction videos of watching those episodes is up to you. Won’t blame you if you don’t make anymore reaction vids to this series after the unacceptable toxicity from other fans of The Expanse. Never experienced that kind of behavior from fellow fans in the past and I’m sorry you two experienced it. I do appreciate you both at least giving the first season a try. That’s more than I’ve gotten from friends and family.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

That's exactly right about Holden, which is why there are references to Don Quixote throughout the series. The name of episode 1, 'Dulcinea', refers to the name of Don Quixote's idealized version of female perfection. When Avasarala visited Holden's mother in 'Windmills', she noticed the antique copy of the Cervantes novel in the home. Holden's mother said Holden loved the book as a child and that he "fancied himself as a knight". The title of that episode itself is a reference to the 'tilting at windmills' phrase which arose from Don Quixote (someone taking on a fight they cannot win). Holden chose the name Rocinante for the ship because it's the name of Don Quixote's horse, and when Naomi asked him what the word means he said "It means we need to go find some windmills". The man is naively idealistic, often to his own detriment - just like Don Quixote.

Tenn Seven

Except that the room was a radiation shelter, which is why it had the radiation symbols on it, which is why everyone else on the station thought it was fine that they were being directed to them.

Florian Hoyer

The Problem with ur "One Season and then something else" is that this is NOT THE SEASON FINAL :/ the final is Season 2 episode 5. with season 2 episode 6 the new book starts so we can say NOTHING Here to answer ur question as most of them get answered in the next 5 episodes until the real "final" hope u ever watch season 2 but if u do u will basicly need to rewatch season 1 or will be lost as the first 5 episodes are just more season 1 stuff ... i rather had made the break after episode 5 in season 2 as thats the end of the book ;&

Luis Torrefranca

Re: Naomi. She's brilliant. During the interrogations on the Donnager, they questioned why she was working an ice freighter when she was far more capable.

Monica Alarcon

Thank you for doing The Expanse... even if you don't do the rest of the seasons I got into the novel series because of you... That said I'm skipping the next two series but enjoy!

Who Are These People

Simone: "What do you guys think?" Me: "Well, how about What We Do in the..." Simone "Doesn't matter!" Me: "...Wire. What We do in the Wire, is what I was going to say."

Terrence Williams

Season 1 ends in Season 2 episode 5. Weird right?

Sisyphus

Please give "The Wire" a shot. I've never seen Arcane, but I'll take a look.

Pajander

Sure, but that's how everyone had to watch it when it first aired, with a year or more in between. It's fine. I just hope they get to the end of season 3. That's a fine place to stop, if they want to.

Drew Acheson

Please read the books. They are SO good!

Śéáń

Miller's actions during the scene with the doctor was lifted from the original TTRPG game they based all of this one. It annoyed the party at the time too.

Ronon

I will start off by saying, I loved this show. I also get the confusion and frustration and appreciated your honest reactions. So that out of the way, a lot of the character motivations are not explained right away, nor very quickly. you get little glimpses, usually through dialogue not involving the main character, like Holden's personality through Avasarala and Elise (Holden's mother) . I know quite a few people who had issue with this approach of character building, as it is unusual in television, or at least to my experience of Sci-fi story telling. Firefly is a good example of how traditional Sci-fi characters are usually built, they give you most of the facts up front, so you know what possible choices those characters will make when given a decisions, then you learn a bit more about them as you go, this kind of flipped the character building story around, and really unless you have a lot of patience and watch multiple times usually you will always miss something. So your frustration is justifiable, I was like you at the start, except I really enjoy Detective Noir type shows, and for me this first season I ended up not focusing on all the characters so much as Miller and his detective work. But regardless, I apologize for this word soup, I don't usually post, but wanted to share an opinion/Thoughts. I hope you continue the series, but if not, I really enjoyed the reaction. Another series if you haven't seen that has a really good first season is Altered Carbon, Kind of the same idea more Sci-fi Detective noir, but you won't miss much on the second season of Altered Carbon.

Joe

I'm also passing on watching the next two series, but I do love "The Wire", I just don't think it'll be worth watching a reaction video to. As great as that show is, it is slower the The Expanse, and the big joy of it is watching it grow and unfold over multiple seasons, just like The Expanse. So, if they are only going to do 1 season of The Wire, then go off and watch other series, and maybe come back and do season 2 a year or so later, then I'm not too interested in watching. Maybe a few years from now if they have done all the seasons by then, I'll go back a watch the full thing, but no interest in only watching the reaction to only a small part of the story. It would be like only watching the first 8 minutes of a movie reaction video. The enjoyment, for me, is seeing the reactions to the full thing

T

"We're going to do one season of a show, and then we'll do another show" Wait, so you're telling me I just spent a bunch of money to watch reactions to this show, and just spend many hours going through the first season with you, and now you're just going to abandon it for some other random shit that you have already seen?? Jesus christ, thanks for wasting my fucking my time and money....that's some real bullshit...now I'm actually angry....That's one way to get people to unsubscribe immediately...Don't start something unless you're prepared to deliver and finish it. That's like one of the main unwritten rules of reaction videos and Patreon. Another unwritten rule is; don't react to something you've already seen. I don't normally swear in comments, but damn, this is very disappointing...

Blacky

The Wire is very, very probably the greatest TV show there is. And indeed it is a slower show in some ways (albeit enjoyable far faster than The Expanse imo). But it is a monument of actual writing, of character development, of making a city and a culture a character of its own. That being said, the seasons (especially the first) are somewhat contained. They build upon each other, but they stand without the next ones. Each season has a very clear arc. Some thread and left untouched and unresolved, but that goes with one major theme of the show, its realism/verisimilitude. One doesn't get to know everything in real life. I believe watching just the first season would be worthwhile. If anything, it will allow anyone who didn't know the show but fall in love with it to continue on their own. One thing though: do watch with subtitles. Don't even try it without. If they are looking for shorter recommendations, Sherlock (the British show with Cumberbatch and Freeman) is only 10 or 12 episodes overall, and quite good.

Phalanx

It's a bit disappointing, sure, but you don't have to overreact or fly off the handle about it. Also, your money wasn't wasted, it's a monthly contribution, you paid for your time, you got the content delivered in that time, you can move on if the new stuff isn't of interest. You're not owed anything, you weren't promised the full series. It's nice when they watch the whole thing, sure, but if they weren't enjoying then it's well within their rights to move on and try something new. I'm happier with that than watching their reactions to something they're not invested in or find tedious to watch.

Generators

lmao what an entitled little child. you can access tv reactions for 5 bucks. FIVE dollars for 10 hours of reactions. sounds like a pretty good deal to me but naaah the world owes you something you didnt even know existed a few days ago. tantrum some more kid.

EMB

I've enjoyed their reaction to this, but I understand seeing through their perspective how confusing and frustrating the first season can be. They seemed kinda on board with these last two episodes, and that will grow, as they said, they plan on giving it a fair shake and continuing, and I can't wait. You also have to realize that they have many patrons, and many viewers, who won't be engaged with this content, so it's not fair to those viewers for them to watch only The Expanse for, what, over half a year at this rate? I'm looking forward to them revisiting it, and I'm happy they stuck through the season at least, sometimes people don't even do that if they aren't feeling a show, because they are providing entertainment, and if they can't, then they might feel they're doing a bad job, and they don't want to do that to the people who pay to watch them. Try giving their other posts a go, and if it doesn't do it for you, if you're only interested in watching them watch The Expanse, then unsubscribe and maybe come back when they get back to it.

Generators

yeah they got nearly 3000 patrons, and each of these videos its the same few dozen people commenting, and it gets what, 200 views average on the YT link? which means like 2800 people not caring about this show. so switching to something else totally make sense, i wouldnt want to wait for them to do 5 seasons of a show i have no interest neither. not to mention, when this show first came out, viewers had to wait over a year before S2, so theyre basically just doing what we all did when it was at first a new show. quit being such a baby.

Jack Burton

I'm so tired of other Expanse fans making posts like this. I'm an Expanse fan and they said they will be watching season 2 Posts like this make us all look bad. I think the comments on these vids, even though G&S seem to be missing some details here and there and it is aggravating a bit, lessens my enjoyment of their reaction. It's not that they are missing details... it's people freaking out over them not instantly falling in love with the show. Give them time. The show will speak for itself. Like it did for us.

Travis Bounds

My friends. they watch shows based on poll reactions. if its that important then sub and vote in the polls.

TheCrazyPriest

I'm so so sorry they've wasted your precious time and money. You truly must be shaken to your core. I mean could you imagine someone not being as into a show you like? Oh the humanity!

Shibby

Thank you for giving it a shot, I enjoyed watching along with you guys. I found it hard to get into the first time I watched it, and it ended up being one of my favourite shows. Don't worry about the negative people, and if you don't end up coming back to the show then no worries, life's too short to watch things you aren't interested in :)

Lemons

Thanks for giving the series a try. Sorry you guys didn't enjoy it as much.

Lemons

Oh also other sci-fi shows that might be more palatable and easier to get into are 12 Monkeys and Fringe, if you're looking for more sci-fi stuff.

Andrew

You guys should try the boys. Humor, action......and deranged.

Chase Schleich

They did season 2. Hopefully they'll do season 3 after they're done with these other TV shows they're watching.

Cory Garron

ABSOLUTELY cannot wait for them to watch The Wire!

Atnor Morda

Enjoyed the reaction. I've now only seen the 1st season of The Expanse, watching along here, but it's probably the third time I've started it. Previously I could never quite get into it...but I think Im now interested enough to watch the next season. Then again, it took me several tries to get past the first couple of episodes of Succession, and that's one of my favorite shows ever now :) Also, very glad to see you're going to watch The Wire, another top-notch show. Interestingly, the actor playing "the Butcher" in The Expanse is also in The Wire, at least for a good chunk of a season, but I dont know if it's Season 1. Speaking of... I also like the actor playing the OPA leader that you guys called "the Professor". I didnt catch what show you recognized him from... I only know him from playing a MUCH different character for a few seasons of Mad Men (another excellent, one-of-the-best-ever shows on TV), where he's a bookish, proper English gentleman in the mid 1960s :)

Martin Nicholls

Succession is amazing, I remember watching the first episode live by accident (I have a feeling it was on after Ballers or something) and being hooked right from the start - if people haven't seen it, just watch it, don't do any research :p Oh, by the way if you like The Wire have you tried Bosch? Same production team almost and even some of the same actors..

George P Burdell

I would love to see a "Youtube version" of these patreon exclusive reactions. I prefer the shortened reactions with the footage already included. Just keep them unlisted. These full length reactions assume people have access to the original content and if even we do; too lazy to sync it up or not practical on a mobile device.

T. Arnold Ferguson

Yeah, The Expanse started a bit slow for me, but when you've seen a couple of seasons, you'll be kicking yourself for not having binged it from the beginning...and you'll realize that the first season wasn't really that slow at all. 🚀😀

Dan Guisinger

I do hope you guys come back to Season 2. As others have said, the end of Season 1 is about 2/3rds of the way through the first book. So it doesn't really feel like a season finale for a reason. One of the things about this show is everything has a purpose, every small piece of seemingly insignificant dialog, everything on display panels or sitting in the background.... They have set up things in the first season that were key to all 6 seasons. The way I would say it is, the end of Season 1/Beginning of Season 2 they put their foot on the accelerator and they don't take their foot off for a couple of seasons. Its a real ride from here on out. And the characters get more fleshed out over time, actually, there are hints at things as I said that become more important later on. Right now you know the crew about as well as they know each other.

Ian Fowler

Watched your first four episode reactions and bummed you guys aren’t enjoying it and find it confusing without likeable characters. I adore the show and your reactions are fab too usually. It's certainly a slow burn and doesn’t explain much or hand hold. But from about midway through season 1 to the end of season 3 the tension just keeps ratcheting up and there's some jaw dropping and beautiful moments. I found Holden quite annoying and bland at first, but loved Naomi and Miller. Amos really comes into his own once you have enough information to understand how he ticks too, but that takes a while. He's an absolute fan favourite. Hope you come back to the show at some point and enjoy it.

Purple Dragon Knight

Hello there, Simone and George. I have become a huge fan of yours. Thank you both for your time and efforts creating all these reactions. I can't tell you how much I have been enjoying them. I signed up because I saw The Expanse was available to patrons. I am a huge fan of The Expanse. I am sorry you don't seem to care for it. Totally understandable. I gave up after 3 episodes and did not return for years. Not until after reading the first book. I believe George is correct. With no inner monologue, the viewer misses out on the character's motivations and it's hard to understand them. I did not know it at the time, but the show is fairly true to the book. But the book was not meant to be a TV show. It was also before streaming. We had to wait a week or months between episodes. I believe that is why, for example, Naomi comes off so angry all the time. The show needed to remind viewers where they were. Watching back to back does make her very annoying. However, taking all the seasons as a whole, this is an amazing story with very rich character development. Right now, they are not a team. They aren't even heroes yet. They are horrible together. Not much fun to watch. I think, in my opinion, you are doing the same thing I did. You start to make fun of it just to make it entertaining. And that is entertaining to watch too! I think you two are doing an amazing job with a show that is hard to take in. I hope you do give season 2 a shot. Others have pointed out that the actual season finale is season 2 episode 5. Maybe just watch up to then? After that episode, the viewer and the characters don't need to play catch up and the show really takes off. Plus, it's a great "short season", Expanse fans would be happy and then you both can move on to other reactions. Anyway, thank you for reading my two cents/plea. I truly am a fan of yours and I am looking forward to many more reactions. Thank you for your time and thank you for letting me come along for the ride. Cheers!

Peter Dillard

I also joined to see your reactions to 'The Expanse', one of my favorite series. I hope you continue to the other seasons. FYI - With regard to why Holden does what he does think back to what his mother said about him. Future seasons go into more of the back stories for the other characters as well as introducing some new ones.

Jared Kyllo

Same same. Also joined to watch expanse reactions. Gotta commit to more seasons for the excellent payoff that is the Expanse. By far the best sci fi series to make it to tv, not to mention the excellent books

Richard Hodgetts

I think part of the problem here is that they, and George in particular, are assuming that they're smarter than the show. They believe that anything they don't get is due to it being bad writing. I think, maybe, they've lost sight of the fact that some shows feed out information slowly, laying breadcrumbs that lead to things down the line. Throughout the season there's been a lot of smirking and sneering and smug laughter. I get that people don't all like the same things, but I find it hard to take people who are dismissive of things they clearly don't understand (especially when they could have understood more if they weren't telling stories about unrelated shit over the top of critical dialogue. As with others, I signed up here to see their reactions to The Expanse, having enjoyed their YouTube channel reactions, and come to like them as people. I have to admit, they've gone down in my estimation over the course of watching this season of reactions. I'm glad they seemed to become a bit more involved towards the end. There were definitely points where I was forcing myself to continue watching, as George was really irritating me, with his "can barely be bothered" attitude.

Paul Norris

Hi, I'm glad you're watching The Expanse. Here's a thought on Holden's motivation in S1, guilt. He feels guilty because if he hadn't logged the distress call the Can't wouldn't have been destroyed and now he's trying to atone for that action. Amazon did a recap of seasons 1, 2 and 3 fronted by Kevin Smith, of Clerks and Dogma fame, and he described Holden as inconveniently moral or something along those lines. Personally I liked that you only discover things as the protagonists do, but I appreciate that not everyone will like that. I really hope you stick with it.

samuel Jakob

I have never seen the show before and I do agree that george has some odd takes, for example as I said its also my first time, yet I never felt lost following whats going on and so far I am certainly intressted, also even tho im sure in the books its better highligthed the first time we saw Miller watch Julies voice com to her dad, I felt like he understood her, felt for her, and as he uncovered more than feeling just got deeper( I might be off here(dont tell me) but at least I took something away from it. Some other things I felt they/george just didnt get but I dont wanna make it to long and im sure other people commented on it before anyway. I hope he gets a bit more open minded for the next season. I am still really liking the reaction.

Ridor

Miller has seen the Dresden before. He had the recording off the data smuggler from Phoebe which showed Dresden giving a brief. Remember him digging in the guys calf in the morgue and not wanting the mortician there because he 'talked to much'? Which led him to the workshop where he discovered the data chip in the hamster? While it's rough to follow things in the first four episodes because most of it is 'what the hell is going on', by episode 8 it's really apparent all the bread crumbs the show has laid out for the audience in past episodes. It's a very slow burn as we look at how both Miller and Holden only had one piece of the puzzle. And in the finale it all starts to really come together.
