The Wire: Season 1 - Episode 3 & 4 - Patreon Version

Moon Logic

You're laughing about the idea of Daniels having an Only Fans, but wait 'til you see him without a shirt.

Michael Nobles

Why can’t I hear the audio or see as you guys react to the episodes ? It’s like that with a ton of you’re videos on here

Cinebinge

Hi Michael, as per the tier description and FAQ video on the front page, all patrons has to have their own copy of the movie or tv show to synchronize with our reaction video as legally we are not allowed to just show the whole show or movie as that would be a deliberate act of illegal distribution and piracy. Which is why George does a countdown to press play in every video, so that you the patron can press play on your own copy of the movie or show at the same time as us.

Cristian Garcia

McNulty already said in an earlier episode where he doesn't want to go and the FBI guy said Daniels lives above his police salary but also said they never investigated if he had another income or anything

Byron Abrahams

The "Fuck" scene, as we call it... just proves the Wire isn't just TV. It's art. The way I describe it to friends I want to convince to watch it, is it's like watching a brilliantly written novel.

Danny Bryant

K, I know I am a bit late to this party but, I really like where Simone's head is at regarding the Tambourine at the concert ;)

Timothy Hedrick

@1:00:00 regarding a spin-off starring Bubs: There is actually a short series called "The Corner" by the same people that made "The Wire" (made before TW), that focuses less on dealers and more on users, including Bubs' downfall into becoming an addict. Never had the following "The Wire" did but it is quite good - although sadder. I don't think you can stream it from anywhere (may be wrong) but you can still find the DVDs online.

Josh

Bubbles is not a character in the Corner, but its a really good series. Many of the same actors, no repeat characters.

Martin Nicholls

I've been looking for an excuse to get into The Wire - it's a similar production team and a bunch of the same actors as Bosch, and I love Bosch to bits (they can make them for the next 40 years and I'll die happy - or rather the spinoff which is essentially the same show anyway): you guys doing a reaction to it might just be the one..

JediLounger

Glad you guys are enjoying the show. It’s a doozy. So when you finish season 1, I would advise you keep going once you finish the season of whatever is next. Don’t wait too long. In regards to the FCC and the intro, HBO is not beholden to them as they are not broadcast, they are a cable channel. No cable channel is beholden to the FCC. Most of them behave and generally follow the FCC rules, but they can color outside of the lines if they want.

redddfer44

Man, I try not to hype anything, especially in the way of "can't wait to see your reaction to this specific episode or scene". It was way harder than usual this time with the chess scene and the investigation scene! Dunno if the crew ever got in trouble with the cops, but the actor of Bubs said he was hanging out somewhere in between scenes and some addict came over and dropped him a dose, saying he looked like he needed it more. He considered that his street oscar. (Source: the book "The Wire: Truth Be Told.")

The Wire was shot on location in Baltimore. There are a lot of stories like Andre Royo (Bubbles) being approached with free testers. Shooting on the street apparently was wild, but it really pushed the actors. Also, a lot of the extras were hired right there on the spot. I don't think there were too much issues with the police, even though the mayor wasn't pleased with the way the show turned out after initially giving his OK. More importantly, the biggest problem the show had to face was its lack of popularity, which meant that season 1 is somewhat self-contained. Still, I would also agree that you shouldn't take too long between the seasons due to the complexity of the show.

TGrimace

You two would love the 1997 show Oz. It takes place entirely in a prison. It's got a similar feeling to The Wire. Dark, disturbing, dealing with issues that are unpleasant. But absolutely amazing.

TGrimace

Plus it's one of the earliest roles of J K Simmons. He is amazing in the show. Not likeable but amazing

Lindsay G

For Halloween you should definitely do Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Quite possibly the most brilliant piece of television ever made. "And I do not say that lightly"

joe shmoe

i just subscribed for this show! one thing that i learned while reading some wikipedia articles to refresh my memory is that the show only uses diegetic music. i never noticed it when i watched before, but i think it adds to the atmosphere and was a really good choice

Young Blood Priest

Another great Halloween suggestion is HBO’s Love Craft Country. Great combination of great acting and butt clinching horror. It also stars Michael K. Williams (Omar) from the Wire.

Jeff K

Same. Literally just subscribed because of this show. Cannot wait to see their reaction to how the various characters grow, change, and... well, die... over the five seasons.

Jeff K

Cool. Lester. Smooth. That's it. That's the comment.

Armchair Rizzard

Fun fact: them beating Boadie was not because as George said it "they want to make a circus out of it." It was because they were cops, and they are known to sometimes savagely abuse their power.

Haye Zeus

This is a great aspect of the show. That even though Kima is a very likable and charming character. She’s still complicit in the whole police “us vs them” mentality. So she is gonna beat up on a blac…drug dealer if they attack another cop. It’s a code for them, atleast that’s how it’s portrayed.

Blacky

It's not just for giggles, it was motivated: for a very long time there was a strict policy of "you don't hit a cop", as a way to force some version of respect (read: fear) but also as a self-preservation for cops. Which obviously was abused even further, with cops beating people for "making them run after them" and the like. Basically it's the soft version of "cop killers get gunned down and won't even see a courtroom". Kima is a cop first, and a street one, one that goes on raid and stuff. I had the same "wtf?:" reaction the first time I saw it for a minute or two, until I realized it's perfectly in accordance with her character. In their mind it's dangerous (potentially really life & death) to let this slide, especially in such a public setting. It's sending a message. Like Avon want Omar's corpse strung up publicly to send a message. Same thing. And you see the character being beaten up not that upset about it, he knew what was coming, it's a price he accepted to pay. Obviously it's wasn't morally acceptable then, it's even less so now. But it was realistic, and still is in some ways.

Travis

Glad you guys are enjoying it so far. Fun to watch with people who appreciate why it’s so great.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Oh yeah, this is the one with the "fuck" scene, that was literally the assignment given to the actors, make a scene using nothing but the word "fuck", now go!

Pam Nail

That investigation scene was inspired by (I think) David Simon's comment that with the way Baltimore police cursed you could believably do a whole scene where the dialogue was nothing but variations on "f***" and "motherf***er."

PIG

Yeah I remember the actor, Deirdre Lovejoy, saying that the director was just pushing them: "More grunts!! I want more grunts!!!!" lol I can't imagine the set.

Starromania72

This is my 1st time watching The Wire but I'm familiar with David Simon's work via Homicide: Life on the Street (based off one of his own books and also filmed/set in Baltimore). This has a lot of Homicide's DNA to me - the humour, the deep discussions (chess, McNuggets, creative paths to early retirement), the police politics, the detectives on the verge of falling apart... In the 2nd ep, we had the homicides white board logging the detectives' cases and one of the old timers' mentioning "red to black" (red=open case, black=closed), a constant focal point in HLOTS. Judge Phelan and McNulty's ex were both detectives in Homicide and I wouldn't be surprised if more fmr cast members turn up. What's obviously different is the freer rein given by HBO to TW's creators than HLOTS had on NBC and the expansion beyond the police's side of the story. I'm also guessing there are no crossovers with Law & Order on the cards.

Kenneth thomas

New Patron here after I saw you were doing The Wire! Have enjoyed your youtube content for a long time though. Psyched for this!

Tom McDonald

First watched the Wire a decade ago, then ended up in Law School in Baltimore a few years afterwards. Recognize some of the courtrooms since I interned for a Judge. The entire show feels too real - friend of mine worked at the club where they filmed Orlandos, and I've gone out at one of the bars where McNulty always went. Didn't figure it out until years later.

Pajander

Stringer Bell? I hardly know her!

Onno Smits

I think you missed it but McNulty was already asked where he did and didn't want to go. He said he really didn't want to go work out on the Police Boats as he gets seasick.

John Richards

There is actually one cross over from HLOTS and L&O... not just an actor, but a character. In the last season, Richard Belzer does a brief cameo as Detective John Munch at a cop bar. That gave him the record for playing one character across the greatest number of TV series

Justin Hearst

So the different tops are kind of like a brand name for the dealers. Basically, the red tops are for one group and the blue tops are for the drugs from another group. Also for George the W sign he made is a common westside gesture to say "you're from the westside" or you "represent the westside"

Chris

And it essentially showed up shows like CSI to be the absolute nonsense that they are

Gareth Davies

csi baltimore, one of my favourite scenes in series one...that and mcnulty trying to figure out the corner
