The Wire: Season 1 - Episode 9 & 10 - Patreon Version

Q

The end of Ep 10 could have easily been a season finale for most other shows. Just goes to show how they don't hold anything back on the Wire. It's so jam packed with substance and momentum, they didn't need to hold onto that.

Michael Handy

Baltimore......Ravens.....was a really astute guess.

For fans of Homicide: Life on the Street (and people who despise domineering yuppie upper management types) the ending would have hit a bit differently, as the end of Capt. Barnfather.

Pierce

George: "im just talking out loud" yea.. dont do that lol

Pierce

god george is brain dead sometimes lol

George, Shardene isn't working for "drinks" or tricks. She gets a paycheck like all the other girls, plus tips while she strips. It's a legitimate business. She just asks for $20 per drink as tips/bonuses from men willing to do so. The moments with Wallace and Shardene are so good and so moving -- as is Omar's goodbye to McNulty and Bubbles' struggles and the final moments with Kima in danger -- because it really brings it all back down to human beings being fragile human beings.

Tuesdays have become the TV highlight of my week because of this watchalong.

With all of the incredible dialog written into this show, my favorite bit of acting is still Bubbles sitting alone on a park bench. Clean for the first time in years, seeing the details of the world around him, and being a bit overwhelmed by them.

Jeff K

Basically, you can sum it up with: “Andre Royo is incredible every time he’s on screen.”

So how long do they usually wait to start another season of a TV show? Gonna be a reallll massive bummer having to wait months(?) potentially for them to continue this show after Season 1 ends. The only multiple season show that they've done from what I can tell is The Expanse, and it's been 3 months since they last watched that show. Should we expect the same timing here? Or did they just not enjoy The Expanse?

Black Heart Games

I knew the ending of Episode 10 would hit Simone hard. It hit me hard the first time I watched it too. I hope you guys will do a triple episode for the final three next week!

George Smith

The following episodes are where this show comes into it's own really!

When you finish this, you guys should do “Treme”, it’s from the same creators but it’s about the music scene in New Orleans. 😊 Also, the bearded guy that talks to Bubs is a famous musician, Steve Earle, who has had drug problems in real life, so he’s speaking from experience.

My interpretation of Bubbles's motivation was that, in part at least, he wants the independence. He doesn't want to burden the family, and he also needs the experience of making it out on his own. Relying on the goodwill of another is both unreliable ("what if she gets bored of my ass and throws me out on the street?") and bad for your self-image: if someone takes care of you, it implies that you can't take care of yourself. And if you can't take care of yourself, you're gonna blame yourself; and then you're gonna numb that pain by doing drugs.

Jeff K

Agreed. Especially since the finales in this show are typically an epilogue, more than a traditional finale. As good as the finales are, they might seem a little anticlimactic on their own.

I lot of people were mentioning Deadwood last week. Just to let you know, BA Reactions finished The Wire and just started Deadwood if you want to check that out! He just watched the pilot and likes it so far. I always do the same for Cinebinge, who are prob my favorite reactors thus far :) I point to other reactors in other places, so I'm not trying to promote one over the other. I'm just someone who likes reaction videos like the rest of ye.

If I may give some insight about homeless people issue : being on the street is not just about not having a place to sleep, but it's also a whole social experience. Sometimes getting your own place can be an unbearable situation and you end up missing your whole social world. It's just... Too lonely or you can feel trapped... Homelessness is a very complicated and multifaceted issue that a simple place to stay can not always solve. My girlfriend works with very poor and socially excluded people and this can happen regularly.

John Richards

As a former denizen of Baltimore, there is some clarification of a Baltimore specific term I'd like to provide: Shardeen works for "drinks and tips", but a drink is not a drink. Strip clubs in the city were not allowed to have "lap dance" areas, or to offer lap dances. To get around this restriction, clubs encourage patrons to buy dancers "drinks" - a $20 or $25 glass of club soda or ice tea. While consuming the drink, the dancer would provide a standing lap dance to the customer. If anyone wants to know how I acquired this bit of knowledge, I have to plead my 5th amendment rights

"I wish I had a case to solve" You're solving all the riddles George keeps throwing up, lol

Haye Zeus

Suuure George, acting like you never been to strip club. Right. ;P

PIG

They seem to really like this show so I’m holding out on hope that they just continue onto Season 2 for The Wire. I think enough of their fans like the show too. But if they decide not to then I can’t hold it against them….

Jeff K

It's definitely not. I get it looks a little similar, but it's not him.

Jeff K

I wanted to like Treme so much but I just lost interest by like midway through the second season. It has a phenomenal theme song, though, and obviously it's got a lot of Wire actors in it (Lester and Bunk, in particular) in big roles. It's a good show, no doubt. I appreciate that David Simon brought in Anthony Bourdain to write the restaurant portion.

PIG

I’ve heard this more and more. I think people who don’t live in poverty find this hard to comprehend. The Wire explores this in Season 4 but I’ll keep spoiler free and leave it at that.

Young Blood Priest

Thanks for clarifying cause I was scratching my head too. Were I live women can do lap dances but can’t get nude. They have to wear G strings and have bandaids on their nipples. Which also makes me scratch my head.

You guys need, need, need to watch The Sopranos.
