lmao, I hate that I'm watching this now - weeks after ya'll put it up. xD But yeah, loved that Ukatoa reference! xD It's awesome that you're a Critter Simone. :)

Season 1 was a bit of a slog, but wow this all paid off great in season 3. Nice arc.

"We apologize for this interruption and will return now to our regularly scheduled programming with The Wire Season 2"

Next week: truth time! Will Simone & George get hooked when I did, or do they stay cold? I started reading the first book, btw. I like it a lot more than the first season of the show. The characters have more nuance and inner life than they did in the show, and the writers have a wonderful eye for little details that bring the setting to life.

Crater full of proto-beer. Yep, that's it, you got it :) On horse trading, gift horses etc, Errinwright does sort of explain it, during negotiations in certain cultures horses are given as gifts (particularly ancient middle eastern cultures - but the Romans and others engaged in this) during trades to sweeten the deal, that's a gift horse. A lot of people think it's supposed to be a bad thing (because costs of stabling horses etc - plus the whole Trojan thing) - horses are/were valued highly in those cultures, it is supposed to be a good thing - anyway in diplomacy you had horses being traded backwards and forwards (presumably over decades and centuries) because you'd end up with lots of different deals happening, that's horse trading.

Right?! Holden is almost a completely different character in the first book, and in the book you get why they look to him to be the captain. I think the show is really good, but I wish they had the cast work a bit closer to the book characterizations.

On a related note (and unrelated to the show), I love the phrase "beware of Greeks bearing gifts".

If aliens can create craters full of beer, then I welcome our new alien overlords with open arms 🍺🍺🍺

The next few episodes are when the show grabbed me, up until this point I thought it was ok but I got some real hype feelings in the the last episodes of this season.

I must admin that I am having some difficulty understanding your, what I am going to take for the moment as, ambivalence George. Is it that the story and character's are not compelling? Is it the extended mystery regarding the proto-molecule that only seems to grow? You seem deep in thought often throughout each episode, but do not seem to be expressing yourself, so it is a bit unclear. You'd certainly not be the first viewer that bounced off this series. While it is inarguably one of the most on point sci-fi show that deals with life in space,it is also a very busy show, with a complicated political backdrop, many characters and a mystery that seems to only grow deeper with every episode. So I get it. It is not helped by the writers insisting on creating interpersonal drama where little or none existed in the books which sometimes make the characters almost either unlikable or inconsistent at times. What I will say is this, you've passed, or about to pass, what I consider a bit of a turning point both in the series adaptation of the books story and characterization. Things and events begin to gel much better going forward I feel. Though, if you are looking for a tidy wrap up of the core mystery I must warn you, don't expect much in the short term. In either case, this is not an indictment at all! I love so many of your other reactions. Yours and Simone's interplay is great. I consider my subscription money well spent! Simone I appreciate your dogged efforts to get behind the show and work through this rather complex and rocky season and a half. It is fun listening to you work new information through as you try to understand what exactly is going on. As a book reader, I have an advantage, so it is interesting to see yours and Georges take on characters and events without this inside track. I really hope that you guys do continue the series after Season 2, even if you feel a break is in order as I love this series and believe that it only gets better from here! Lastly, Bobby IS a complete bad ass. Again some choices made for the series regarding her character in season 2 were jarring for me as a reader of the books. However, once I had a chance to digest where they were going with it, I understood most of the liberties made early on. And of course, thanks guys!

Looking forward to The Wire coming back! On the 8th episode of The Expanse and its definitely a slog, not sure its worth continuing.

BenJuan26

I love that the "ocean" that Bobbie finds is almost surely Lake Ontario, since this was filmed in Toronto. That's such a great scene though. Frankie did a great job expressing sad wonder at seeing what Mars could become.

Evil Pear

I felt like the end of season 1 the show started to become interesting, and then it became a bit of a slog again at the beginning of season 2 until things got properly setup. Then I was hooked. I'm also so looking forward to them continuing the Wire!! I wonder if they'll struggle with the change in focus but I feel like they'll learn to love it pretty quickly.

How do things work for suggesting a series? is it much different to recommending movies? I just had a thought for a series you may like, it's pretty different to the shows you've reacted to so far, but I randomly watched some clips of it recently and I was reminded what a great show it is. The show is "Freaks & Geeks" a comedy-drama from 1999, I think a show like that would be a nice change of pace! It was sadly cancelled before it's time, but that means you don't have too many episodes to go through, and no need for breaks between seasons. Also if I'm suggesting comedies, "Derry Girls" would be another great show, I'd be curious to see your reaction to that!

Richard Hodgetts

The "gift horse in the mouth" thing is referring to the practice of looking at a horse's teeth to determine its age and fitness. It means "if you get given something for free, don't be too fussy about it being the best".

Abush

I think he started out not trying to bash the show but i think lately he is genuinely deep in thought. It's a show that throws a lot at you and without the aid of having watched it already or read the books, it can be easy to miss important details that are constantly revealed in conversations. Plus unlike most other reactions or even the movie reactions here, they dont get the benefit of editing and rewatching it then. Like you said, i genuinely hope they continue the series even if they need a little break or even just watch it on their own if they feel the need to have other shows on here for the fans.

Grand Moff Slackin'

The part where you waited for me and then stared at the camera was terrifying and fantastic. More of that but also never again.

Daniel Popp

So episode ten has a perfect example of needing to listen to Amos when he speaks to learn his story. The example he gave of young pregnant girls being peddled to Johns who get off on it was used for a specific reason. In the book they were way more obvious with it by having Holden overhearing Amos confide in Naomi about his past and where he came from. The show is a lot more subtle and I love their approach to it.

Miricat

The clear screens are undoubtedly used to give better camera angles when showing the actors watching something - you can see their reaction and the screen at the same time. As to the crew of the Somnambulist being OK without their ship, no way would the thugs have left them alive after they got them out of Ganymede space. Holden really didn't have a choice if they wanted them to live.

SimianSupreme

The actress they cast for Bobbie is great! And she really grows into the character as the story progresses. Her early introduction in the series threw me at first, but once I understood where the writers were going with it, I was onboard.

Nikodevious

To be candid, I'd forgotten how patient and subtle this series is. I'm especially appreciating season 1 & 2 more on a second trip through.

samuel Jakob

Not really anything about the show but bc u asked about the horse saying, back in the day or even still checking a horses mouth, teeth etc. was a away to check if they are healthy and well if someone gifts you a horse there is no reason to check for illness.
