Magnificent 80s nostalgia

Onikaze

hah! now to see if they go down the long path of the lore that ends in that horrible alone in the dark-like Jaguar CD game based on the cartoon :P

Jeff K

FINALLY, George and Simone can start overusing "there can be only one" like the rest of us.

A Red Mage Named Blue

Now comes the inevitable: If you liked the soundtrack to this, you may just like Flash Gordon

Obligatory “HEEEEEEERE WE AAAAAAAAARE…”

… and we transition from parking garage to a Ren Faire.

So I don’t know if people have already told you this (if so I apologize) but a lot of your questions are answered or addressed/retconned in the Highlander TV show. In the show, there are a group of people called the watchers who are regular humans that don’t take sides in the fight but keep track of winners and losers. They also sometimes clean up after the battles to avoid publicity. There are immortal women and men and if a regular human kills an immortal, their power/essence/memories are lost to the ether. There were books and a comic and at one point the game studio I worked for had rights to do a video game but I’m not sure how deeply any of these go into the lord beyond what the show did. One thing that is (and still is for me anyway) vague is What exactly the prize is and how it works. The sequel films just made things worse in that regard.

michael clarke

the second one, along with the sequel to the exorcist, is known as some of the worst sequels of all time.

The two greatest sins in entertainment history: Cancelling Firefly and making Highlander 2

Clancy Brown is an American treasure

You mentioned Battle Royale...have you guys seen it? if not, it's great!

Jeb Manning

So now you definitely have to do Flash Gordon. It's another fun 80's movie where Queen does the entire soundtrack.

Bob Bittner

Because I love Queen, I’ve tried many times to watch this movie. But I always check out before the 30-minute mark. Your reaction clarifies what I’ve long thought: This is just a flat-out bad movie! :)

Logan Kerlee

xD Blocking the cleavage out! hahaha, that was great!

chad holbrook

There are no other Highlander movies. Google is wrong.

Lyonheart86(BryonH)

I was always more of a fan of the Adrian Paul Spinoff on USA Network to be honest.. Christopher Lambert did make cameo appearances on the show.

Adam Wetstein

“There can only be one”. Who is it Simone or George ?

Jeff K

Absolutely. And if people haven't read about his family's history, it's really fascinating. His parents and also his grandfather, who was a major US politician from Ohio from the '20s to the '60s. From what I've read about him, he was pretty instrumental in pushing through civil rights legislation and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. (And when I say "from what I've read" I mean when the new season of Dexter aired last year and he was on it, I went down a wormhole reading about him on Wikipedia and that led me to his grandfather's page.)

Happy Hanukkah

Trivia prompted by your exchange at 28:00: Christopher Lambert was 28 years old in this movie. By the way, Alan Ruck (who played Cameron in Ferris Bueller, which came out the same year as Highlander) is older than him.

UnSafeStu

There can be only one... Highlander movie. Do not watch any other Highlander movie, under and circumstances.

David

To answer some questions: Only Connor is a "Highlander" - that word just describes people who come from the highlands of Scottland. Immortals who have received the Quickening do gain a natural enhanced physical strength, endurance, etc. They can call upon even more power through concentrating and connecting to other living beings but that ability was only shown once during training and takes time so not something you can do mid-sword fight. I think it was only done in the tv series like, once as a callback. In the TV series we saw mortals kill immortals and what happens is the Quickening is delivered to the closest living immortal. (An immortal used a gang to try to get risk-free power) Also as a general rule, ignore the additional movies: they are just studio money-grabs and don't make a lick of sense. The TV series was pretty good and expanded the lore, but it is a tv series so it has its cheese moments. It retcons this movie as not the end but just a fight between two of the most powerful immortals. Personally I treat the series like a fanfic take on the premise.

Steppin_Razor_Wx

You should definitely watch Highland 2; it's so bad it's good. The tv series was legitimately good, though.

Jesus F Christ

For another great late-70s/early-80s movie with a Queen Soundtrack you should watch Flash Gordon (1980). You gotta go into it knowing that you shouldn't take it too seriously. None of the performers are taking the source material seriously. It's meant to a cheesy sci-fi movie based on a 1930s newspaper comic strip. It's a really fun movie.

Donald Selvester

Highlander: "It won the Academy Award… Best Movie Ever Made."

Wrencher86

Talledaga Nights. You should watch Talledaga Nights now.

Tom Smith

Yeah and it expanded on the lore a lot too, immortals using human death squads to take down other immortals and then cutting their heads off when they are resurrecting and things. :)

Tom Smith

In the TV series there are female immortals, and I believe there were immortals who were imprisoned and trapped for hundreds or thousands of years. Don't watch the other Highlander movies outside of the TV spinoffs 2 and 3 are abominal.

JBK405

Generally speaking the sequel movies are almost universally regarded as poor quality follow-ups. They all contradict one another and there is no way to reconcile even two of them together in a way that makes continuity sense. When it comes to the story of Connor MacLeod, this original film is pretty much it when it comes to something that is fun and makes any amount of sense. The first sequel (Highlander II) is considered one of the worst movies of all time. It may be fun to watch and riff with friends if you enjoy that kind of thing, but as a serious production it's a mess. I haven't seen the TV series so I can't speak to its quality firsthand, but I've heard described as pretty good in its own right. It's a spin-off, though Connor does appear as a minor character. The anime film is also pretty good, but it's a completely different story.

oldcdog

Oh, George, George, George…that’s the problem my friend…they did try and bring back the Highlander. Quick tip: Never, ever watch any of the other movies (#3 being the possible exception). On the other hand the first tv series starring Adrian Paul as Duncan McLeod, despite some problems, was pretty good. In the tv series, they just retconned the original movie…Connor McLeod fought and killed the Kurgan but they weren’t the last two…no attempt at an explanation was given. In fact, when you see Connor in the first episode of the series, you might assume that the series takes place before the film. It’s in season 2 that you find out that Connor did kill Kurgan. They attempted to explain (badly) the origin of immortals in Highlander 2, but it was so ridiculous, the explanation was removed in the director’s cut. In the tv series, there is no origin. The people who become immortals are all found as children. None of them know who their birth parents are. You age normally until your first death, assuming you weren’t decapitated. Somehow, a more experienced immortal finds you, explains the situation, and gives you basic training to survive. Eventually, you’ll part ways, but there’s no rule that the teacher can’t kill the student or vice versa. And the first immortal who finds you isn’t obligated to teach you. They can just take your head and your Quickening. Sorry for the book, but in spite of my loathing for all of the movies besides the original, I really did enjoy the series and the lore even if it wasn’t always consistent.

Randy Hammill

Highlander II was so bad/hated that they recut it for release on video. They completely altered the story of the movie. If you can find both versions it’s kind of a master lesson on movie editing. In the original release the immortals were revealed to be aliens from another planet, in the recut there is absolutely nothing about aliens. All assembled from the same footage, as far as I know nothing new was filmed. Highlander III completely ignores the existence of Highlander II. The TV series also alters things dramatically, and while it has its moments, I was never a huge fan (although many are). What it really comes down to, is that the lore was never that deep in the first movie and there wasn’t really an intention for sequels. This was early in the fantasy/sci-if movie period and they didn’t seem to understand that if it was a hit, the types of folks that love these movies expect that lore to be explained and expanded upon in a way that makes sense.

Mithroch

He fought a guy in the parking garage... and then the parking garage F-ING EXPLODED! I'm not sure... but that might have... just maybe gotten the attention of the police. No... you didn't see Conner kill anybody. Well... except for the opening scene of the movie... Oh dammit... you remembered before the end of your reaction. Well... consider yourself mocked for those several minutes.

Gishgali

The producers offered Sean Connery the role of Connor but he wanted to play the Spaniard. The producers realized how ridiculous this was but when Sean Connery wants to be in your movie, you make it work.

JoeNotCharles

I always thought it was ridiculous (heavy Scottish accent: "My name is Ramirez! I'm Egyptian!") But when I saw George's comments about his katana this time I can kind of make sense of it: just like Connor's lost his accent in the present, "Ramirez" (not his real name, just his most recent alias) has lived so long and in so many places that he PICKED UP a Scottish accent at some point by living there so long. His whole character is a mishmash of different cultures because he's been everywhere. It just probably would have come through better if he'd had a Spanish name, Japanese sword, and some other unrelated accent, instead of a distractingly Sean Connery one.

JoeNotCharles

Everyone's always confused what to call these guys: a lot of people say "Highlanders" even though that's really just Connor; most people who get into the lore say "Immortals" but that's a bit generic, especially if you're comparing to other types of immortal so you have to say "Highlander Immortals" which gets confusing again. I've never heard "Quickeners" as a name for the whole group, but it makes so much sense!

Oscar Diggs

Went to see this the day it opened. When the wrestling started we were like "um, what?" but it quickly redeemed itself.

Finnulf

Don't bother with anything else in the extended lore - the movies especially diminish everything great about the first movie. The franchise, much like the immortals themselves, there can be only one!

Andrew

This was Clancy Brown's first big part in a movie and he basically did it for free. People still mention it to him when they meet him today and he loves talking to fans about it. He is a super nice guy.

redddfer44

When I was young, I liked the second one better. I had to refresh my memory. I can see why young me liked it, but man... not gonna lie, I'd love to see you two witness how utterly horrendous it is.

Justin Wolford

How did this not end up on cinecringe?

Andrew Charles

On the subject of unusual casting, your Cinecringe alter-egos may enjoy (I'm being ironic) "The Conqueror" (1956) starring the immortal western legend John Wayne as Genghis Khan. Possibily one of the worst movies ever, and certainly the worst I've ever seen myself.

Andrew Charles

There's a pretty good TV show about a woman with the quickening. Highlander - The Raven. It was a spin-off the Highlander TV series.

Skarr

If you're willing to do a Cine-Cringe... check out "Ahhhh! Zombies" the only movie about a zombie outbreak from the point of view of the Zombies. only needs to be watched once, but it's a great B movie.

underAtack

Ditto! My first memory of the Highlander movies was II (the non-Renegade version), and kid me thought it was awesome! It's the reason I dove into the other movies and the series (which I never finished, but it's on the list). Plus, as bad as it was, we all have to admit that Michael Ironside makes anything he's in better!

jmundt33a

If The Raven had actually been about Amanda, it would have been excellent. I loved Highlander: The Series and was excited for her spin-off, but they couldn’t commit to an anti-heroine or something like Leverage with Immortals. And the guy they had playing Nick Wolfe was just a big block of Shatnerian wood.

jmundt33a

And while Highlander 3 is a spotty backdoor TV pilot, it is still the best of the live action sequels. Highlander 2: The Quickening is a Cinecringe candidate in either cut. The director was so disgusted with the theatrical release, he walked out of the premiere. His “vision” wasn’t any better.

Quezax

If you like the concept of immortality, you should watch Man from Earth. A Great Indie Film.

Todd Robertson

The rest of the Highlander series is set in the same universe but pretends that the first movie doesn't exist...just like we all do with Highlander 2. Don't. Just Don't. It's Star Wars Holiday Special level bad.

jmundt33a

He loves roasting Davis and Panser. I believe he most often calls them “buzzards.”
