Yay! So excited for this one. Hope you loved it.

Win

Ive been looking forward to this one. Was a staple in my family growing up, I recall Queen did some music for this one. Edit: Oh I totally forgot Queens music is right throughout this movie.

JayF

One of the only good things about his early life? He had no beef with Angus.

MikeBdrx

Never watched Highlander before because everyone I know that has seen it said it sucked. But if you two can sit through it so can I. Hopefully Highlander is better than I’ve been told.

JayF

About the accents, keep in mind that in Connery's case his character has been alive for several thousand years prior to meeting Connor. Granted it's a very strong Scottish accent he has but if he had spent a significant amount of time in Scotland he'd have developed an accent from there. So that helps explain it a bit anyway.

Astraeos

Such a great 80's movie. So cheesy, but really entertaining. And what a soundtrack!

Jeff K

Still, it’s a little hilarious that they cast a Frenchman to play a Scot and a Scot to play a Spaniard. (Sorry, Egyptian. Even more realistic.)

Tinfoilnation

Useless Trivia: The opening narration by Connery has a slight echo to it. The reason: He *literally* phoned it in while sitting on the toilet in his bathroom - but the director actually preferred that version. Also, if you ever re-watch Ready Player One see if you can then spot all the references to this film.

Logan Kerlee

Yeah!! This is a happy morning for me! :D I'm STOKED to watch this with you two. Hell yeah. I'll be starting up here in a few minutes.

Monica Alarcon

Wow now I'm looking forward to Highlander 2: The Quickening!!! (Said no one ever...)

JediLounger

This movie is bonkers and really fun. The rest of the franchise is..ah. Let’s say interesting. I’ve seen all the movies, a large majority of the main TV show with Adrian Paul, and a fair amount of the animated show. Personally I like the franchise as a whole, but it is out there man. Absolutely unhinged crazy lol. And a lot of times it does not make any sense. The second movie in particular is wonky. It has a rare trait of being un-spoilable. I could spoil the entire thing, right here, and you would say “I don’t believe you”, and you would have to go find out for yourself. The franchise is more suited for Cinecringe but you guys would probably have lots of goofy fun watching it.

Tenn Seven

OMG. I had forgotten that the guy who played Angus in this was also one of the main characters in Braveheart.

Daniel Popp

Absolutely love this fun and cheesy 80’s action flick. I do think it’s overdue for a remake that could add more lore, like go into greater depths about why no fighting on holy ground, if it means all kinds of holy ground, what happens when a mortal kills an immortal, etc. Unfortunately, I think they missed an opportunity to do a good remake with Gerard Butler for the lead during his prime, but I’m sure it won’t be long before another good Scottish actor comes along.

Bruce Bromley

Loved all of Connery's 80's films. This one, Outland and Time Bandits especially. All worthy of a watch, if not for the channel than on your own time.

richard wilkinson

Great 80's popcorn flick!! Lost money in its initial theater, release, but is a cult classic now. All the sequels are not worth viewing.

Tenn Seven

Do yourselves a favor and don't watch any of the other movies; they are really terrible. The show was pretty good though.

Logan Kerlee

I super enjoyed this reaction! This is near the top of my list when it comes to movies from my childhood. The Terminator and Terminator II: Judgement Day will always be on top but this is right up there near it. xD I remember watching this with my dad as a boy and being in awe of it all! The action, the violence, the romance! All of it was top tier for me. The other movies aren't really worth watching if you're taking all of the lore into account. They plain aren't as great in general. They get SUPER cheesy! (I'm talking 90's cheesy here - special powers with SPECIAL EFFECTS and all that nonsense) So if you both enjoyed watching this - stop here. If you'd like to see something cheesetastic go ahead and dive in - but don't say you weren't warned! xD I'll post my thoughts that I had while watching in a comment below this. Again, really happy that you both enjoyed this movie so much. :) It brings me a lot of joy when others enjoy this film! Please don't die George! xD

Logan Kerlee

The music in this movie is second to none. I fucking love it. It's on top of all the Marvel movies, this that and the other. It's music is timeless and awesome. I mean, this movie's 37, nearly 40 years old and ya'll were vibing to it. xD Yeah, escalated mighty fast! Their reaction is what I'd expect at least. You don't get resurrections that often. :P $500 a month! xD LMAO, Sean Connery's accent aside it's an awesome flim. Good job George, you figured it out. :P A lot of effort was put into this movie. Rachel was likely in her mid 40s, yeah. The song was written for this movie. lmao!! xD "His weapon of choice is a gun!" hahahaha, you're a riot George! xD Yup, that's all the random dude was. Glad ya'll like Clanct's voice! He's SO villianous! xD I remember watching this as a youngster and his voice SCARED ME!! The character is awesome! lmao, poor forever alone George. lol, no. A mortal that kills an IMMORTAL would not gain their immortality. In today's modern age that isn't likely anyway - who else carries a sword around and can actually use it?

Logan Kerlee

While that's 100% true, I wanted them both to watch this movie here because it's fucking awesome! :P Yeah, it's for sure cheesy but it isn't NEARLY as bad as the sequels. :) Glad that you're a fan though!

Logan Kerlee

I've seen a number of comments about modern people killing an immortal. That just isn't going to happen! lol, who do you know that carries a sword around with them? Chances are you may know a person or two that carry a gun.. but you saw how effective they were against an immortal.

Logan Kerlee

hahahaha, I misread your comment for a moment. I thought it read "All the sequels are worth viewing." I knew that wasn't right - so I re read it! xD

Logan Kerlee

The soundtrack makes me smile every time I hear any of the songs featured in this. :)

Odd Thomas

I drove home like Dominic Toretto to watch this! Never been so excited for a reaction. Highlander 2 is indeed awful, but not without entertainment value

Jeff K

You must have one hell of a commute to require you to race a submarine, drive off of an airplane, and crash your car out of a skyscraper onto a highway overrun by tanks.

akaTheBARON

🖤So my whole plan for the next two hours is to blow off work stuff completely, fire up my copy of Highlander and watch along with the dynamic duo that is Simone and George. All the while I'll be thinking of that part from "Finding Forrester" where Sean Connery says "You're the man now dawg" in his glorious Scottish accent every time he shows up in this movie. Seriously... Sean Connery saying "You're the man now dawg" is worthy of being a text alert lollll

Odd Thomas

The first 2 sequels are watchable, but not great, certainly not as engaging as the first movie, which is really self-contained, hence none of the sequels make sense. 2 is such a clusterfu** of a production that it's worth seeing just to witness how spectacularly a franchise can be destroyed by producers only interested in cashing in. Mulcahy pretty much had PTSD from making that movie. It does actually have some cool scenes but it's just all over the place. 3 is more in line with 1, but is basically a lesser retread.

Thijs

I was really surprised when this showed up in the poll. I loved this franchise while growing up, but was hesitant to suggest to watch it. All the better that I get to enjoy this movie with you two once again after I do not know how many years. Hope you had fun watching it! Got my DVD (jealous that you actually got a blu ray copy) 1..2..3..play :D After watching the movie and your reaction to it I was also curious about some things (and possibly could have forgotten over time). According to the information I have found, if someone is decapitated without an immortal present, the power just dissipates. Non-lethal injuries heal very quickly and vanish without a trace, the one exception being injuries to the neck. Since immortals do absorb the power and knowledge of the immortals they kill, it should be that they become physically stronger. Another theory I found however was that immortals can have unique traits/abilities and that it is more of a build up resistance over the years to pain that makes them tougher to deal with. I do think that this movie suggests that they do become physically more powerful with each immortal absorbed. In other parts of the lore I found it can happen that someone old or young becomes immortal when they suffer an unnatural death and then have to get creative to fight other immortals since they do not have the strength to fight an immortal that is in his prime. Last thing that I thought was interesting (there is too much to post here obviously): When a good immortal beheads many evil ones, it occasionally happens that the evil Quickening completely overwhelms the personality of the good immortal, making him/her evil. This is a 'Dark Quickening'. The contrary can also happen, but there is only one known occurrence of a 'Light Quickening'.

JayF

Having watched this movie now, I hope you both take the time to listen to "Who Wants to Live Forever?" in its entirety. It's a really great song. Also, even as an older guy, that part of the movie always makes me tear up a bit.

Travis

I’m sorry this movie is horrendous. Couldn’t make it passed an hour. No redeeming qualities unless you liked awful movies as a kid and are feeling nostalgic

Brendan Rafferty

The other highlander movies are garbage... seriously avoid. BUT... The series was really good and expanded on the mythgology of the immortals... and, obviously, in a show about an immortal... there are tons of stories to tell. First season starts weak... trying to be a cheap imitation of the film. But the show really picks up and comes into its own and the writers do a good job of expanding the world. Highlander the show was to the film what the show Stargate SG-1 was to the original Stargate film in taking the original concept of the film and coming into its own and expanding the mythology and coming up with clever ideas. Highlander sequels: Bad Highlander show: good

David Eldridge

The best source of lore for this universe is the Highlander TV series (1992). You can basically skip every movie. They aren't good at all.

wroot

The soundtrack in this is golden. And the opening theme is engraved in my memory after watching TV series in my teens :)

JayF

Yeah the sequels are actually Cinecringe level stuff. The show was okay but definitely not reaction worthy IMO.

Opti_Frog

Highlander is weird. Part fantasy, part mystery, part music video, some very European sensibilities and dollops of cheese. A French-American actor who could hardly speak english playing a Scotsman and a Scotsman playing an Egyptian. A pretty loose lore that leaves most things unexplained, half the movie is flashbacks, motivations are bizarre and all over the place, very strange sound effects, everything explodes for no reason and there is a glam rock score. This movie should not work. But the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It works amazingly, and the biggest mistake was trying to do it again, because there can be only one. I was such a fan of this ridonkulous movie in the late 80s. I was looking forward to Highlander 2 so much and it turned out to be one of the worst sequels ever made to any film ever, so i never bothered with any other sequels or tv shows. Highlander did not do well at the box office in the states but it was a moderate hit in Europe and on home video, so a very, very troubled, misguided and rubbish follow up was green-lit. I don't think any film has disappointed me more than Highlander 2. But i have watched Highlander way too many times. Oh, and a remake is in the works, but has not been green-lit.

The next two both retcon the end by adding a special exception that restarts the game long enough for Connor to have to win the prize again. After that comes the first show starring a new main character so from that point forward they retcon the whole thing to simply say, no, Connor never actually won, there are still plenty of immortals. The cartoon even decides to take place in a sci-fi future with yet another main character.

Thomas Wendel

Thank you for watching this one. I was in high school when this came out and meshed well with my D&D obsession. This movie was beyond cool back then. It was not until later in life I realized how cheesy it was. But still so much fun. Like most 80's movies, they weren't thinking that deep about logic or story. As for the other movies, Highlander 2 is considered one of the worst movies ever made. Even #3 and the rest do not recognize #2's existence. Please do not watch it. But maybe the others. Thanks again.

JarHead0351

Thye TV series "Highlander" was a good show

Com1xguy

Hooray!!! They have finally watched Highlander!

Lou Gallucci

talk about your unintentional comedy. When the single hubcap rolls across the screen after the first fight i lost it.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

For all the goofy choices made in this film, casting Clancy Brown as the Kurgan was not one of them. To me he will always be one of the coolest villains ever, in this, and one of the worst ever, in Shawshank. But this role was made for him, or vice versa, he's like a mix: the psychopathy of the Toe Cutter and the physical presence of Jason, touch of Frank from Blue Velvet with some over the top cartoonish Jack Nicholson Joker. I don't care, I love this movie. Yeah it's probably 80% nostalgia from my youth, but great story (despite the dialogue, God damn it's bad in some spots), cool characters and premise, and yes, fuckin Queen were the kings of cheesy awesome sci-fi Eighties cult classic soundtracks*, and yes I stand by Flash Gordon 🤘so bad but so so good (on edibles). *(No disrespect to John Carpenter)

Adam Barry

Every question about lore you raised during this is answered by the TV show. Basically some people are born with the potential to become immortals. But they only become immortal and stop ageing if they die a violent death, otherwise they will grow old and die as normal people. Other immortals can sense these potential immortals, and while 'good' immortals will find and protect these people, 'evil' immortals will hunt them and kill them to take their quickening before they have knowledge of what they are. This is what the kurgan was trying to do to Connor in the battle of 1536. When an immortal takes the quickening of another, they gain their power, skills, etc... If normal humans decapitate an immortal, the quickening just dissipates and is wasted. And yes, there are female immortals, child immortals, all trying to survive through history. And the holy ground rule applies to all types of holy ground from every religion. In regards to this being the end of immortals with the prize, I think in the TV show there's a passing mention that Connor won a kind of 'local' prize, but the whole game is ongoing. And if anyone is interested, a few years ago I edited all the flashbacks from the TV show into chronological order. --- https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLow2wPdkLB_LAAHh_nS0v7PVLP_xwJfWx

Nikodevious

I remember that dark-line from the TV series, when it was asked "Children can be immortals? I've never seen one. " "You wouldn't have. They don't last very long."

gobmob2000

Yes Queen wrote these songs specifically for this film, if you want to watch another cult classic with a Queen score watch Flash Gordon 1980.

BHillzebub

If you want more Cristopher Lambert I recommend Mortal Kombat (1995) Much like Highlander it's kinda bad but really good if that makes sense.

Thomas Yanez

Please, just stop here - keep application of The Prize to your imagination. The rest of the movies just shit all over it (and canon). Much in the same way you can say that anything can be a dildo if you're brave enough (and have enough lube), any sequel can be made if you are willing to retcon hard enough.

Thomas Yanez

As much as I love the movie, I'd actually like somebody to take a serious shot at just rebooting the entire franchise from scratch. But, only if they keep the Queen music.

Matthew Langley

To delve into the lore you should definitely watch the TV show, it's the best content TBH (though this original movie is classic).

Scott Elsasser

As far as sequels go, well.... There should have been only one. Oh and if you're in the mood for some older (but excellent) Sean Connery. Have a look at the film version of Umberto Eco's "Name of the Rose"

Martin

I tried, I really did. Lasted about half an hour. This movie didn’t age well at all.

evilmunky

from the comments its seams like i'm the only one that likes the second movie. yeah the story changed almost 95% but its still a fun silly sci-fi fantasy.

jmundt33a

And this is by far the best film in the series. I loved the TV series, though.

Odd Thomas

The other classic Russell Mulcahy film is The Shadow. It was a comic book movie long before it was cool (1994)

jmundt33a

Remakes can work, but not as often as we’d like to think. Bionic Woman, Charlie’s Angels, CHIPs, 21 Jump Street, etc. of the fizzy females of the last decade, only Five-Oh had staying power and while MacGyver and Magnum found footing of a sort, they were more reshaped to fit the generic tv action formula of the time. I have no idea what a reformatted Highlander would look like. The series was an accident to begin with. It started out as a recast Connor with his continuing adventures and then got reshaped with Paul’s input. It found its legs and form in seasons 2 and 3.

Steve H

I remember one cop from "Hear no evil, see no evil"

djKENTO

Christopher Lambert who plays McLeod is blind as a bat so he basically couldn’t see anything during the sword fights which is one of the reasons they’re so terrible in this movie.

Grandalf

Two observations after rewatching this masterpiece of 80's schlock: 1. It needs to be categorized as a comedy. Watching it in that light, it's much better ;) 2. Clancy Brown is the only one who understood the assignment. I really think he read the script, said "Holy shit, this is fucking ridiculous." and acted accordingly.

pinkdino99

There are best worst movies which are really bad films that somehow become good because they are so bad, and there are films like this (and Commando is a great example) which are the worst best movies. It is not a good movie. But it is a great movie despite not being any good. Does that make sense ?
