You should have watched the OG first two Christopher Reeves/Gene Hackman Superman movies first. Hopefully, you’ll get to them at some point.

Jason Pratt

While I appreciate the beefcake that is Henry Cavill, Clark really needs to be portrayed as bumbling. I can’t recommend the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies enough. Being 40years old, there’s undeniable cheese, but nail the essence of the characters.

UnSafeStu

I think in the original story Jonathan Kent dies of a heart attack. Clark feels so guilty that with all his power he couldn't save him. This is what spurs him to move to Motropolis and become Superman, saving as many people as he can. I'm not well versed in DC this is just what I remember from my youth.

Teyon Alexander

yup. So much for saving as many people as he can in this one. I guess the lesson he learned from Pa's death is: maybe let 'em die.

Teyon Alexander

I want a story of all the kids and people Clark has ever used his x-ray vision on suddenly discovering they have cancer and it's his fault. Like, he's just shooting xrays at people all willy nilly in this movie. In the DC universe, Superman, a vigilante that could destroy the planet, is viewed as a hero and allowed to do what he wants for the most part. Batman, a vigilante that often targets corrupt cops as well as criminals, is hunted by the police because he can't be bought. If you haven't watched Invincible, you really should. It's an interesting twist on the Superman concept.

Jeff K

"It's ultimate alienation." I mean, yeah, pretty much, and it was one of the big points from the creators. Both of their families were Jewish immigrants, so the story of Kal-El coming to the US, assuming another identity to try to fit in, etc, was all very much intentional. And the fact that the first Superman comic was published in 1938, well... draw your own conclusions about a refugee trying to conceal who he really is and fit in, given he was created by two Jewish men. (I'm a Marvel guy and never really read a ton of DC, so someone can correct me, but I'm fairly sure based on what I've read that was very much part of his creation.)

jmundt33a

I HATE that joke, but that’s.just me. Also, Jonathan Kent’s early death (particularly by heart attack) is not universal. It’s best known because it was used in the 1978 film. And the lesson learned was that he couldn’t save everyone in spite of his gifts. He left, set up The Fortress of Solitude, and spent years completing his training as a Kryptonian.

Jacob Lantom

It is called the phantom zone and it's another dimension. In the comics jor-el (Russell crow), superman's father invented it

Jacob Lantom

Superman's powers. Heat vision, strength, invulnerable, speed, x-ray vision, and freezing breath. Two weaknesses are kryptonite and magic

Sarin 031

I agree with watching the original Christopher Reeve film. Its the best Superman film by far imho.

Theoshin

Hey your are missing some classics from the comics like Super-Kiss, Super-Hypnosis, Super-Ventriloquism, Super-Mathematics, Super-Weaving

Shane Kolaga

For me the Snyderverse is fun, it had some bad writing moments (don't kill me snyder fans, but not to spoil anything, but BVS...) but are fun! I really do like Cavil as Supes and hate what they did to him (and don't get me STARTED on what they did to Ray Fisher...). If you really want answers to your questions as well BvS and ZS Justice League (yes the 4 hour one lol, but it's broken up into parts!) will answer most of them and like I said the Snyderverse is a fun watch!

Dave Gaskin

+1 for a reaction to the first two Christopher Reeve movies. With no prior experience of movie Superman, starting with the 1978 movie would have been great. I enjoyed parts of Man of Steel but as an 80s kid, Reeve will never be bettered. And Gene Hackman is brilliant as Luthor. Plus the fashion & John Williams’ score!

Damian

I think Brandon Routh was excellent also (or he was excellent at playing Christopher Reeve playing Superman). Also, I’m also the only one who enjoyed Superman returns so I’m not sure what that says about my taste.

Damian

Yeah, try and watch the other DC movies in this series. I think everyone likes to hate on them, but there are some good ones. I enjoyed BvS and wonderwoman - WW84, erm, had an amazing trailer. Did the Snyder cut of justice league have distinct parts? So, should be easy to watch in two (or more) sittings.

Marko T.

I hope you react to other DC movies too. I remember George saying that he hasn't seen Batman (1989) and Batman Returns.

Lewis Heather

Would be fascinating to see your reaction to BvS and Justice League, both highly controversial and divisive films when they were released. I think they get hated on a lot just for hating sake tbh ! (btw I'm pretty sure the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League was chopped into parts anyway, can't remember how many exactly but could help with watching!)

David Gallagher

Top Superman's Villians other than general zod: 1) Lex Luthor, A super smart human that does not like aliens, 2) Brainiac, an alien cyborg/ai type. 3) Darksied, the ruler of an alien world thats kinda facisty

Nate Gavin

Why is NO ONE commenting on the awesome thumbnail! lol

Hamesque

This had by far the most nonsensical intro by Simone so far. What the hell is a cinebinge!?!

Daniel Bjork

I need to know if Simone ever got George’s simpsons joke

Sebastian ronin83mg

If you wanted Superman to be an asshole or just evil give „Brightburn“ a shot 😎

Jeff K

"Tights versus tights. They're rasslin' now!" I enjoy the fact that, with that line, this dropped on the same day as WrestleMania. Also: the stuff with the glasses is dumb, but there is some psychological stuff to it. Like, there are been studies done (because of course there have). From my own anecdotal experience: I was a big fan of Smallville back in the day. Like right after the show ended, I was on Martha's Vineyard with some friends and waiting for the ferry back to the mainland, and in line at a coffee shop to grab some breakfast. I had no idea until after I walked out of the building that, when my friends told me, that I was directly behind Tom Welling in line. He had a baseball cap on, and that's all it took for me to not notice him, somehow.

Logan Kerlee

That's incredible, but yeah - goes to show that just a pair of glasses can create a great disguise.

Logan Kerlee

I'd recommend it for the score alone! Christopher Reeve as Superman though is just pure class. He's amazing and plays the role flawlessly.

Who Are These People

Long comment for both George and Simone: George: The history of Superman for George: Superman was created in 1938 for 'Action Comics'. He was 'faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound'. As superheros began to proliferate, and Superman himself as the most popular character carried multiple comics per month, writers were strained to keep him interesting. The 50's saw a boom in 'Super' powers, including vision enhancements like x-ray, heat, microscopic, telescopic, full electromagnetic spectrum, breath powers like freezing and wind, shapeshifting, hypnotism, faster-than-light speed, ventriloquism(?), shooting tiny versions of himself out of his hands(???) - anything you could think of. In 1985, writer John Byrne was tasked with stabilizing the DC characters. He published a miniseries that unified the DC universe and reset Superman to "reasonable" power levels; flight, x-ray, heat vision, super-strength, but able to bruise, bleed, be knocked unconscious, even killed. However, not even a decade passed and subsequent writers drove the power creep again. I haven't read comics in 25 years, but I imagine it's likely now for Superman to push a planet, puncture a star, exhale a gust to blow a supernova away to save a world, or play squeeze-ball with a black hole. One fan wiki I checked to write this comment has this note: "Superman vibrates his body and travels under light speed, so his punch can hit with the force of a white dwarf star." So yeah. Simone: Per your question at 27:57 in the Youtube cut, about how Superman and Batman goes in the DC Universe: In 1986, Frank Miller (300 and Sin City) did a great comic about that very dichotomy which Nolan ignored when he borrowed his 'Dark Knight' movie titles and Zack Snyder botched like an absolutely clueless moron in his 'Batman v Superman' movie. If you liked 'Sin City' and 'Watchmen' then read it for yourself, it's a thought-provoking comic: 'Batman: The Dark Knight Returns'. However, I think that in current comic canon, Batman is a member of the Justice League (the Avengers of DC) and sanctioned by the authorities to do whatever he wants.

Logan Kerlee

I would LOVE for an entire month (will never happen) to be dedicated to DC films/series. That would make me incredibly happy. It would get reactions to everything all at once, getting it out of the way for the folks that hate it and for the people like myself that love it - we'll be happy throughout.

Nathan Swapp

You should do at least BvS ultimate cut and the Snyder cut Justice League but I think the DCEU is worth a channel watch. A lot more channels are reacting to it because Marvel has hit a bit of a rough patch and more folks are wanting to see something different that the DCEU offered, without being a direct comparison to marvel anymore. Watch the DCEU and let it stand on its own terms.

Blacky

As someone who didn't read nor care about the comics, Batman v Superman wasn't as bad as some said. At least it's in uncut/extended edition, which does add back in a few critical scenes for the plot. I can imagine the theatrical release to be a mess, sure. But the extended is fine. Not great, has a few issues, but tackle some interesting points, and is overall fine. Which, for a reaction, is probably even better than a perfect movie, I would guess? In the DCEU, I would advise to watch: Man of Steel Batman v Superman Wonder Woman Justice League Snyder's cut maybe Aquaman to give more shirtless to Simone and the audience possibly Birds of Prey, maybe, possibly The Suicide Squad (the 2nd one, with the The) ignore the rest

Blacky

If you're looking for more super hero thingies outside of Marvel, I would also suggest two things: - first, Legion. It's a short TV show, 3 seasons (2017-2019) for a grand total of 27 episodes. Technically a shoot off the X-Men, but no relation to any movie or show, it's its own thing. Its set design and cinematography are grandiose. Grand Budapest level for big swath of it. Good acting, good music. And the story & plot are very interesting, but very spoilery, so I won't say anything. But let's just say it's *ripe* for discussion and personal interpretation. And Aubrey Plaza is *incredibly* good in it, award winning worthy good. Obviously, *after* The Wire. Obviously. - second is Unbreakable, a 2000 movie by M. Night Shyamalan with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. It's a very different mood and take, quite subdued. It has an optional two sequels (although, not really, but somewhat... it's complicated) called Split with an over the top and quite good James McAvoy and a more restrained still very good young Anya Taylor-Joy, and the last one called Glass.

Who Are These People

Also, the Reeves Superman was a much better movie; better acting, better writing, much better Lois Lane (no shade on Amy Adams, she can't help it that Zack treats his female characters like objects). Superman II deals with the "why don't people see he's Superman?" question in a more interesting way too, but the plot is a mess due to a (badly misguided) change in directorial vision halfway through. Thirty years of fan pressure resulted in the recent release of a 'Superman II: Donner Cut', which is a more coherent version. If you do a Reeves double-feature(!), I recommend you find the Donner Cut.

VisualHigh

Simone: "Superman can't fight against humans" Lex Luther has entered the chat.

Aarush Azizi

Superman is basically a human plant. He goes through a sort of photosynthesis since his power comes from the sun's light so I ithink the idea is that he produces oxygen without having to breathe.

EyedOmally

Okay yes, we need Batman v Superman and Zack Snyders Justice League.

Alexrandom

So happy you watched this ! It has some writing issues but mostly pretty nice action. I really love BvS (director's cut) It irons out all the issues of the theatrical cut. It's still not a perfect film but it has really nice moments. I also really like justice League (Snyder cut obviously). Just a great movie all around. Hope you have time to watch both movies (the music is pretty incredible. Tom holkenborg is a great composer :))

Robert Elliott

You could watch the Josh W. Justice League as a cineacringe? The Zacks as a comparison.

Rob Church

I saw this in theaters and I was dying. It's like Snyder was challenged to make the worst Superman film of all time while still convincing fans it was good.

Pearl Jam

I was gonna ask if you saw Superman Returns, but I’m not sure that one tried to convince fans it was good.

Opti_Frog

I'm like the only one in the world who thinks Superman Returns is a four star movie, and heaps better than what came after.

Kor Viray

Oh please watch the ultimate cut of Batman v Superman then check out the Snyder Cut of Justice League

Justin S Tuisamoa

Surprised at some of the comments. I absolutely loved Man of Steel

Alexander Islinger

Please check out Brightburn. Gives you the answear to one of your questions early on in the movie. wink wink

Diiirk706

Dogggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg. Shit.

Moisty Justice

superman's most dangerous villain is a human. Lex Luthor

Fat Man

I realize I'm a little late to the party with this one, but... There are two major issues with the DC Comics "Shared Universe." The two major issues are Zack Snyder and Frank Miller. Frank Miller was a comics writer who hated comics, superheroes, women, minorities, and himself. Zack Snyder loves Miller's work so he tries to capture the essence of hating all things hopeful. It is a terrible foundation for a shared continuity of superhero films. Everyone is sad, depressed, and all-around just bad. These movies (Man of Steel and onward) are not a fair representation of the DC Comics Universe. Please keep that in mind if you plan to watch any more of these movies... I am a huge DC Comics fan, and I have hated almost every single one of these live-action films because of Snyder and Miller's stink...

Aaron Gunstone

I completely agree that most DC Comics films have been terrible and not a fair representation. *Especially* Man of Steel (but also Superman Returns). How do you waste Henry Cavill so badly? And I'm bitter about everything Justice League adjacent (minus Wonder Woman) too. But I disagree on Frank Millar. Man has been responsible for some absolutely seminal superhero comics. Almost everything we associate with modern Daredevil, for instance. His work on Daredevil and Elektra doesn't make me think he hates any of the things you said.

Maurice Jamian Cupido

Thumbnail gave me all the needed motivation to watch the movie.😂😂😂

fallingupdownthere

The DCEU is garbage. They really need to start over and make sure Zack Snyder isn’t within 100 miles of production.

John_rd

You have to watch the original superman movie with Christopher Reeve and the late great Gene Hackman. Brandon the Godfather is in it too
