Jim Frykman

This is the kind of movie I would only tolerate with folks like you :D

Jay Davis

NEVER seen a Superman movie?!?! I quit! This is intolerable! Miss Teschmacher!!!

Young Blood Priest

Originally super strength, speed and the ability to jump high. As the years went on different writers gave him more abilities to the point that it got ridiculous and they had to dial it back. I like this movie for what it is. But you’ll hear people say this isn’t the real Superman and I get where they’re coming from. For contrast, checkout the 1978 Superman film staring Christopher Reeve which is a closer representation of the character from the comics.

Adam Barry

The x-ray vision and heat vision, plus basically being invulnerable were all there from the first few comics as well.

Teyon Alexander

It felt very much like they put the super before the man in this movie. I hated it. "fight somewhere else" that's my biggest problem with this film. In any other iteration, Superman always tries to take the fight to a place where it will do the least amount of harm to others. It wasn't even a consideration in this film. There wasn't a single moment where he was like, let's take this to the desert or to the artic. It was just not Superman.

Marko T.

This is not bad but Superman (1978) is a lot better.

Marko T.

I really wanted Man of Steel 2 after this. They should have made that and not Batman v. Superman.

JediLounger

George: “It doesn’t make any sense.” Welcome to the DCEU Cinebinge. It’s quite erratic and interesting. At times it’s quite good. Other times…well, let’s see how many of the movies you guys watch. George, I am watching Zod show up, and you asked about Supergirl. She is already on Earth in this version of Superman. When Jor-El was giving Clark the tour of the scout ship, there were several cryogenic chambers. One with a body in it, the other one was open. We are going to see her for the first time in The Flash movie this summer.

Teyon Alexander

Or if they were gonna do Batman V Superman, then make Man of Steel 2 after that so the whole "he's our saviour" idea is shown not told. He went from being public enemy number one in Batman V Superman to "He's the best of us" in Justice League with zero reasoning. All that positivity happened off screen I guess.

Theoshin

There is a lot of odd decisions in the movie to me maybe the writer or director really wanted there stamp on superman. If i remember right Jor-el told them the planet was doomed, but no one would believe him, and he only had time to make the ship for his child before the plant was destroyed. That made more sense to me overall I t is kinda mention it in a round about way, But The Idea is superman gets his powers from they younger/yellow son. On his planet the sun was older and red. I Was always furious that Lois just walked up to Martha Kent and found out who he was in what a matter of days maybe a month?, but no other person could? The part with the Dad dies makes sense for the point, but does not follow logic overall to me I also am one of the ones that although it was kinda cool to see, but had an issues to how much destruction the last fight had. "MY Superman" would have taken that fight out of the city to lower the death rate. Also I feel that they didn't write a Clark Kent, we only see superman in the film Overall i can enjoy this movie for what it is and just ignore the flaws

Odd Thomas

The last great Superman film. After this they went dark and that is fundamentally not the character. Like Captain America, he's the good guy who brings hope and dignity.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

You know what, I've said before that I'm not the biggest Zack Snyder fan, but I like this one. I kind of base it off my love of the 1978 Richard Donner directed Christopher Reeve Superman, that's my sentimental favorite. This movie I'm sure is gonna get a load of hate but it does do at least one thing better than the first imo, I love the way Krypton was depicted, we got a much deeper look into the culture, I liked it, visually gives that old school science fiction pulp comic feel, and so much world building in just a few scenes, that they just could not have accomplished in '78 effects wise. I mean I loved Terrence Stamp as Zod in his disco fever outfit, and had a crush on the goth chick he hung out with (she was in Conan the Destroyer too), but Michael Shannon's Zod, in terms of writing, was more interesting to me. That said I wouldn't mind more DC movies, nor would I mind a watch of the the OG Superman for the sake of comparison.

Adam Barry

I really want to see your reaction to the 1978 Superman movie with Christopher Reeve now. He definitely embodied the dual roles of Clark Kent/Superman better than any other actor has.

JayF

Whelp, you have at last reacted to a movie with Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent) in it. Please consider watching a movie he was the lead in such as - Dances With Wolves Field of Dreams No Way Out The Untouchables A Perfect World

MikeBdrx

DC's animated movies are way better.

Dave van der Kuyp

I generally like this movie (one of the few good ones in this universe before Gunn got involved), but that pop Kent tornado scene was dumb when I first saw it in the theater and it's still dumb as hell now.

Joits

Right? There was clearly time because it's friggin superman and he could have easily saved him... but sometimes Snyder likes to go for dramatic spectacle over common sense.

Odd Thomas

The first two Christopher Reeve movies are great, but I also love Supergirl (1984). It's quite underrated and a lot of fun.

JayF

Also, yes this movie changed how Jonathan died. I won't reveal how but you will see it if you ever react to the 1978 movie (which is better IMO). The way he died in that movie makes sense.

sarCC

I really hope you do the 1978 Superman movie. It's so fun and charming, pretty much the opposite of this movie.

JayF

To answer Simone's question, Batman and Superman have always been at odds on their approach on how to be a hero. As to how the government feels about Superman, I highly suggest/recommend/beg a reaction to the animated Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (2016). It's 2 1/2 hours long and is rated a 8.6 on IMDB. Trust me on this one.

Thomas Yanez

A lot of the DC movies needed to do some fan-based sanity checks with plot elements before spending all the money. They could have avoided the ridiculous way the father died and the business how Superman would never have allowed a fight that destructive to happen in the city. There is the argument that the city fight had to happen in relation to future developments, but they could have found another way to get there.

redddfer44

The Robin Hood movie is also pretty fun, although more for Alan Rickman than Kevin Costner.

Blkm44

Great reaction! Really suprised both of you had not seen any of the Snyder DC films. I personally enjoy the Snyderverse, while it is far from perfect. The extended cut of BvS and the Snyder Cut of Justice League contextualize a lot of things the theatrical cuts dont.

Martin Nicholls

The way his father dies is entirely reasonable. He goes off to get the dog because he thinks he can handle it - but for a random misplaced flying vehicle he could have done. He has utter conviction that it's more important for him to die than Clark to be revealed, and Clark trusts him absolutely. The right or wrong of it is utterly irrelevant, that's what they believe, so he dies. You might not and I might not, but they do, that's what they believe. Completely unreasonable, but also absolutely perfectly reasonable. On the destruction of the city and Batman paying to rebuild etc, the next movie is Batman v Superman and the issue *might* come up. The thing that makes me sad about Man of Steel is that it had so much promise, and to an extent the follow-ups sort of threw it away - though the Snyder cuts of Dawn of Justice AND Justice League kinda improve them (don't even bother with the original cuts if you watch these movies, they're not worth your time - and I'm somebody who doesn't generally like directors' cuts, editors exist to untangle the mess that directors make, like T2 is absolutely ruined by James Cameron's cut of it: exceptions exist, and those two movies are definitely that). Even the Snyder cuts of those movies are deeply flawed but they're also perfectly watchable/enjoyable and certainly much better than the theatrical cuts.

Eric S

Agreed. The tone of Superman 78 is closer to the comic. Superman is supposed to be hopeful. not angsty. I get this interpretation, its realistic. But comic books don't have to go there. And they don't always land if you change them up that way. But yeah, either here or on your own, check out the old flicks. :)

Monica Alarcon

I vote yes on continuing the Snyder verse... And after you watch them you decide if it's for cinebinge or cinecringe

Brendan Rafferty

George... in answer to your question about Superman jumping / flying. In the original early comics, he could not fly... he simply jumped everywhere. When they started making the early Superman cartoons, they realized him jumping looked ridiculous... he looked like a flea... plus since it was easier to animate him flying, they changed his power from jumping to flying and the comic books followed along and it has been flying ever since.

Brendan Rafferty

The next film ...Batman v Superman The theatrical cut is garbage and makes little sense. The longer R rated director's cut is the one to watch... it is still not a great movie, but decent, and makes more sense, much better than the theatrical cut

Chase Schleich

His dad usually dies of a heart attack on the farm right by Clark. There was nothing Clark could have done to save him. It's used to show Clark that sometimes death is unavoidable and he can't save everyone. Instead of the heart attack, this movie used the tornado, but it doesn't work as well because there's things that could have been done differently in order to save him.

Chase Schleich

The cape is always perfect because it's 100% CGI. He very rarely wore the cape with the suit. They added in after so it could literally be perfect.

FranciscoGios

When I first saw who was Superman it was with Christopher Reeve, Lewis Lane wasn’t portrayed as a good partner though in that movie. Lex Luther is not Superman’s nemesis Lex just wants Superman’s power. General Zod, Brainiac and Doomsday are candidates for Superman’s nemesis, Doomsday successfully did killed Superman. Hint: most Superman’s villains come from above out of this world.

W T

If you want to become a fan of DC stuff... watch The Suicide Squad (that'd be the newest, James Gunniest one) and follow it up with a very quick season of Peacemaker expanding on the movie. So much to love about either, JG is like the Edgar Wright of super hero flicks at this point. I bet a bunch of people got seriously into some characters just because of that, not that I think there is nothing to love about some of the earlier DC attempts. They just never quite got the attention Marvel brought to the table, and that's barely a secret.

Michael Green

Good spectacle, especially watching in a theatre back in the day, but kind of a middling script that dips into terrible a few times. "The fact that you possess a sense of morality, and we do not" is genuinely one of the worst bits of villain dialogue ever written, at least in a major studio picture.

Logan Kerlee

I'd steer clear of the second original Superman film. It really falls short of the original film. The first film though is spectacular and very worth seeing!

Amos T Fairchild

The 1978 version of the childhood backstory was better. You'll have to do that and Superman II some time.

Logan Kerlee

hahahaha, great reference! xD For this reference alone, I hope that they watch the original Superman film sometime soon. :D

Logan Kerlee

There's absolutely no question that Reeve is the ultimate Clark/Superman. That's an obvious truth. My second favorite would have to be Tom Welling from Smallville. I grew up watching that show and I very much enjoy it still.

Logan Kerlee

While I enjoy them I also understand that the common audience isn't accepting of that media. I think it's foolish and shortsighted but that's the way it goes. For that reason, I understand them choosing to not do a reaction for an animated film/series of Superman or other heroes. One day maybe, but we've just got to be patient.

W T

We call our sun a "yellow dwarf star," so the only disbelief you'd have to suspend is about similar nomenclature evolving (or being abstracted for the audience's sake) on Krypton. Which, all things considered, is really easy to do... at least once you get rid of all the sapir-whorf nonsense people love clinging to in those discussions. Along the same lines, Krypton-speak "yellow" might very well just be a catch-all term for certain signatures or hues, much like 青 is a phenomenally ambiguous morpheme ranging from blue-green to even black (as I'm quite sure you've mentioned before yourself). Another way to say white, much like we denote white despite talking about the Sun as a yellow dwarf. That and Rayleigh scattering does change how we perceive it, so there very well might be some way to workshop that idea - despite the distance and sci-fi tropes and whatnot getting in the way.

Logan Kerlee

I'm down for you both to continue the Snyderverse but I'd be most happy if you both reacted to the original Superman. Obviously not right away - but down the road, please consider it. It'll have my vote on any poll I see it on.

Chase Schleich

The good thing about the SnyderCut of Justice League is it's divided into 7 chapters so you could literally watch 3-4 chapters in one sitting then the last 3-4 in the next to make 2 videos. The question would be do you stop part one after chapter 3 or chapter 4. That's something you'd need to ask around about.

akaTheBARON

🖤Batman V Superman would be a good watch now that you've seen this. Shows how all this destruction went down from Bruce Wayne's point of view, had a realistic depiction of how the world and it's governments would react to events like this, ect. I would watch the extended version though, the theatrical version is notorious for having so many plot holes that just leave you confused about what's actually happening. But the extended version sort of fixes this by adding scenes they cut out that explain these details.

Mitchell Bowker

Next in the series would be: -Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Ultimate Cut) -Wonder Woman -Zack Snyder's Justice League (4 hours but split into 6 chapters plus epilogue so viewing can be split, watch chapters 1-4, then 5-E) Also, Zack Snyder's Justice League is a legit great movie, not just in compassion to Joss Whedon version.

gobmob2000

A lot of the DC animated films are actually really good, they could react to quite a few of them.

W T

As for the "saving dad" - yeah sure he could have, but that's kind of the point, isn't it? Just because you're really good at physics and physicals doesn't mean you're omniscent, and he did trust his dad after all, who, probably in a misguided fashion, thought his son would be much better off not yet revealing the fact that there are freaking aliens on earth. Fair enough, I guess, there are bound to still be limits on his cognitive and physical abilities. That and Checkhov's Uncle/Dad as a trope that needs fulfilling and yup, we got ourselves a sacrifice. Maybe a bit excessive or even hamfisted, but I honestly feel it still tracks.

Jayson Phillips

I think when he uses his laser eyes it like when you focus on threading a needle to sew.

Lou Gallucci

To me, the most interesting thing about Superman is Clark Kent … and it started out looking like it was going to explore that and then just veered into a generic Michael Bay movie half way through. I understand not saving his father - basically it would have meant the end of Clark Kent. Too many witnesses but it was done in such a heavy handed way I wasn't a fan of. The 1978 movie was pretty good if you can overlook the general 70s cheesiness that I'm not a fan of, and the shit ending ;)

ChickensAreRacist

If ever doing Batman Vs Superman (the basic sequel to this) it has to be the directors cut.

Jayson Phillips

The Sun's radiation sustains him and gives him more power so beyond our magnetic field there is morre radiation.

Jayson Phillips

Supermans Nemesis was Lex Luthor, Bizzaro, Brainic, Doomsday. Bizzaro is alien A.I. and Doomsday was created from Krypton.

JarHead0351

Glad that you are doing DC which is great! I am a big Superman fan since reading comic books as a kid and again while serving in the US Marines. (alot of down time some days lol)

Gratch... just Gratch

The '78 Superman movie with Christopher Reeves does a good job with the whole Clark Kent / Superman change. Mr. Reeves really sold the difference. Plus the '78 movie is a lot of fun, it's not dark and brooding.

Andrew T

I like learning stuff from Simone. Now I know the existence of "the cloak of billowing."

Richard B.

If you want to see what Superman is like raised by someone else you should watch Superman Red Son.

G B

you'll enjoy James Gunn's suicide squad with Idris alba. probably one of the only other DC movies worth watching

JD Vien

The long-ass Justice League Snyder Cut is split into 5 chapters so you can watch it in 5 separate videos. Much more manageable that way. It's almost like a mini-series

Naturekitty5309

Love to see you guys do a comparison origin stories. The last son of Krypton (first 3 episodes of superman TAS) and Superman the movie.

Matt Chris

If you havent already planned, please start/continue 🟦 Mission Impossible movies (M:I 2 is directed by John Woo, and it is freakin amazing, dont listen to too many people, make the experience for yourself, you will Not be let down (: 🟦 The American Pie movies 🟦 Transformers 2 - SOO worth it Maybe start 🟦The Bourne movies

AlimonyMoney

If you want a great Superman life story. You first have to watch Smallville, which is teenage Superman. Than move on to Superman and Lois, which is Superman trying to save the world while parenting 2 kids with Super Powers. They always make great tv series about Superman but can never get the movies right. One director asked why they can't make a good Superman movie and he said, "Superman is too perfect in every way, he has no evil side to him. What makes most superhero movies good is that they have a little evil in them. It is something their enemies can exploit but not Superman. People love characters that have flaws." Basically they are saying he is a boring character. Later on in the comic run they try fixing this by making him bad.

Mike

Oh hell yeah! Ya'll gonna do a Snyder-verse watch? Doing this, BvS, Synder-cut would be a decent trilogy. The Suicide Squad is funny & the follow up Peace Maker is awesome.

Fraser

The first two Christopher Reeve Superman films are incredible.

MikeBdrx

I vote for Peacemaker right after season 3 of The Wire is done lol

Deserana12

James Gunn’s Suicide Squad is amazing and absolutely deserves a watch. It’s so much fun! As for his dad’s tornado death, it’s widely regarded as immensely dumb. So many other ways they could have got the same message across without the gaping logic gaps. His original death is also that he dies from cancer, basically the point is that Clark can do a lot of things but he can’t stop natural death and he needs to come to terms with that. A much story than is what’s given in this film.

Thijs

I am just curious enough to watch along for the reaction, but I do not really care about the movie itself. Imo when you give any superhero too much power and don't have an unique story, it just gets boring. Still hope you guys had fun to see it for the first time!

TechPriest

Hopefully we'll get more of the Snyderverse before jumping to Justice League. There would be a really obvious open question if they skipped Batman vs Superman and went straight to that.

John

You should consider watching the 1978 version, it does a much better version with Jonathan Kent. This might also make the end of Kill Bill 2, and Bill's speech more relevant. Part of the issue with the Synderverse version of Superman is the belief that he does not understand the character. The Justice League Cartoon has a great take on the DC heroes and Lex Luthor. In Batman's origin they were seeing the movie the mask of zorro, so heroes do exist in the fictional DC universe

Jack Urmson

Batman Vs. Superman isn’t as bad as most people make it out to be. Totally worth watching for the channel. Then watch Wonder Woman. After that, watch Snyder’s Justice League in two parts. Aquaman is good too, but that depends on how much you enjoy Justice League. Wonder Woman 1984, however is Cine Cringe worthy.

Shibby

Wow you really have to leave your brain behind for this movie lol still it was a lot of fun watching it with you guys, I'm not much of a Superman fan myself but there was a lot to enjoy.

Martin Nicholls

You need some serious rose tinted glasses to watch any prior incarnation of superman and not die inside. Legendary movies, good for if there's nothing else on, but..

Martin Nicholls

I agree with all this, except to say that my argument is they don't fulfil the promise of Man of Steel, and honestly I think that's people's issue with them: which isn't to say MoS is perfect, but it carries promise of something to come with it. I can't help but think it's the studio's fault mostly though, but that one scene from BvS that everybody talks about really almost does bring the entire thing crashing down - and you can even understand the motivation, but it makes no sense really. You really need to see the Ultimate Edition of BvS and the Snyder Cut of Justice League though, they don't make much sense in their theatrical cuts. The original WW was better than I expected though the "boss fight" was utterly cringe and should have been a warning for 1984.

Michael Short

"Animators for the 1940s Superman cartoon found that they were wasting a lot of time animating Superman jumping to and from locations. They filed a request with DC to change his power from simply leaping to full-on flight. DC agreed and Superman has been flying around ever since."

Steve H

About your inquiry what will seem too much? Clark's Kryptonian nature will manifest inself soon enough.

djKENTO

the actors who play Lex and Clark are doing a full rewatch of the show and podcasting about it. It’s called Talkville.

djKENTO

I know it’s a month late. But when Clark’s father dies in the accident Clark is supposed to be 16. He’s protecting his child. The biggest mistake is making Henry play a teenager.

Rivaldo McLean

If you want to explore Superman's other villains as well as more of Lex Luthor's ideology, you guys should react to Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition. It has more material. Zack Snyder's Justice League is a good watch as well. Additionally, for his new cut of JL, Zack Snyder only did reshoots for the epilogue. So everything was filmed in principal photography in 2016. Joss Whedon only used approx. 1/5th of said footage. Cheers :)

djKENTO

I still desperately need a Batman V Superman directors cut reaction.

The Maestro

you guys should watch the old Superman movie from the 70s at some point

Lana Gorgeous

His earth father died in the original Superman films of a heart attack.

droodly

"WHAT'S IT SUPPOSED TO DO?!" "IT'S SUPPOSED TO GO IN ALL THE WAY!" and George says nothing... you make me sad
