I'd phone home but I'm already here and I'm gonna watch this right away! P.S. you haven't done Close Encounters of the Third Kind yet...

JayF

"Lets give her lifelong fear of dinosaurs and aliens." - Simone's parents (apparently)

Kangdarius

Maaaaaan y’all need to start putting that google drive account to use and post the unedited full reactions. The other folks I’m a patron to do it and have been for years

redddfer44

Hmmm! I've never watched this. I love some of Spielberg's films and really hate others and I've always assumed this would be one of the latter... Is it time to face my prejudices for the second time within a week?

BND

Obviously every child is different. This was my dad's favorite movie and he showed it to me when I was about 9 and I loved it. I loved ET I thought he was adorable. Anyway, it's all subjective, I don't really think it has to do with the times, some people find him cute some find him gross or creepy.

FrancescoTakesItEasy

Oh my fucking god, you guys! Amazing, thank you for this. I'll get off work in an hour, gonna hurry home, pop in the 4K disc and cry my eyes out alongside you guys. Thanks for this!

Mark Messer

If you are looking for more Spielberg film, he did a few pretty good ones in the early 2000s. War of the Worlds is pretty good. Minority Report is pretty great in my opinion.

BND

I dont' know if schools do dissection now, but when I was a freshman high school in 2000 we dissected a frog but it was already dead, I'm guessing they used to dissect live frogs before.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Gonna watch this when I get home from work but just watching the intro now and it cracks me up that so many people have that bad experience with this movie, I saw it when I was very young and it's actually one of my first memories, and all I remember was crying when ET left. I think maybe that's why I'm such a horror fan, my parents subjected me to terrifying movies lol, just kidding, but I wonder if that's why I love that trope so much, the monster that becomes your best friend. Reminds me of Monster Squad. Also, and you'll probably never watch this, but it's a great little 80s flick starring Henry Thomas (Elliot), Cloak and Dagger, ah the 80s bad times for crack and gang related crime, good times for kids movies....

REDR58

I was born in the 1970s and have somehow never seen this movie so I'm looking forward to watching this for the first time!

Martin Nicholls

Speaking of Drew Barrymore, general reminder you guys need to see The Wedding Singer some day :)

Kinokind

It was never specifically presented at the time as a children's movie, more of a family movie. Drew Barrymore famously thought ET was real, sort of the way Natalie Wood thought Edmund Gwen might really be Santa. I saw it when it first came out, and liked it, although I thought the ending was a bit manipulative and contrived. Not my favorite Spielberg. Although I have a lot more respect for the cinematography now. Probably the most important result of the film is that Spielberg took little Drew under his wing and acted as a defacto father to her, in later years teaching her about film and its history. Both Spielberg and Barrymore came from damaged families.

Carl Noraas

You asked which great/essential Spielberg movies you should see after this (assuming you haven't already). Here are the essentials that I promise you you'll love... Duel (1971) Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) The Color Purple (1985) Empire of the Sun (1987) A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) Minority Report (2002) Catch Me If You Can (2002) War of the Worlds (2005) Hook (1991) is somewhat controversial. Some people really love it, but Spielberg hates it and regrets making it. It's fascinating to see where people land on it. Amistad (1997) is a great and important film, but very dark and depressing, be prepared. Plenty of life-changing movies are still in there. Have fun! :)

BND

Hook is so underrated, I love that movie! It's such a fresh and unique take on Peter Pan. IMO it's a better Peter Pan movie than any of the other ones that have come out.

Odd Thomas

I prefer Poltergeist; same setup but with ghosts instead of an alien. I would also take Flight of the Navigator over ET any day.

Odd Thomas

George if you watch Falling Down there's a whole thing about roadworks you might enjoy!

Odd Thomas

Mac & Me gave me legit nightmares

Michael Robayo

Spielberg, deep down, is a horror movie director. But watch The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, A.I., Minority Report, Catch me if you Can, and Munich.

Kinokind

I second that! The Wedding Singer is my favorite Drew and Adam Sandler movie, and is great for its satire on the 80s.

Michael Green

For me, E.T. looking like he does is so we feel love and empathy for something that has so many aspects of the grotesque. The thesis statement of the film is when Michael says "Think how other people feel for a change."

Kinokind

Duel shows what a gifted filmmaker can do with a tiny budget, a talented actor and a good script! Also worth checking out the segment that Spielberg directed of the old Night Gallery (1969) movie. Imagine a first-time director in his 20s having to direct Joan Crawford! Well done (and Tom Bosley's performance with Serling's words - heartbreaking). OK, a little obscure, but we're here to learn, right?

ChickensAreRacist

One aspect of it hitting hard and being the milestone it is is due to it coming out in 1982. And yeah, a very powerful kids movie. So the kids (like me) always remember the weight it held when first seeing it. Dang I hated the scene when ET was dying and Elliott was us the viewers. Plus, it’s Spielberg. King of the 80’s with other greats in other decades. Edit: and George, can’t imagine why anyone would take your fun, funny and true observations to a level of finding you insulting the movie. All good there imo. And thank you Simone, you were great and necessary as always.

CT

So judgemental about E.T.'s appearance the whole movie (when George isn't on the computer ofc). WTF

Andrew T

That song Michael was singing when he got home from school was Elvis Costello's "Accidents Will Happen."

Andrew T

Holy crap Simone, after all these years and even seeing this in the theater when it first came out, I never caught the fact that the stained glass window we see from the outside was closet window.

samuel Jakob

I dont know I think E.T. is kinda cute, I mean in another movie he could be very creepy and scary, but his behavior and his big eyes, I never thought of him as creepy and I didnt know anyone did think that of him before I saw your reaction.

Odd Thomas

Original taglines for the E.T poster: HE'S MOIST! YOU GET USED TO HIM! THIS KID WILL NEED SERIOUS THERAPY!

Odd Thomas

More alien movies you need to watch: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Paul, Flight of the Navigator, Starman, War of the Worlds (my fave Spielberg movie)

Tukken

I always saw it as he got sick through over heating. Like his species needs to be cold and when they put him in the ice box that's what got him healthy again! But that was just kid me guessing of course. xD

Ben

Just dropping a comment to request 'Stand by Me' (1986) again. Definitely worth a watch!

Mitchell Bowker

I figured he was dying because he wasn’t connected with his people. When they left his heart stopped glowing, the emotion connection to his kind is important to sustain their lives. His bond with Elliot was an emotional life raft that could only sustain him for so long, but as soon as his own kind returned he could connect with them and was revived.

Ry Jo

for "nice aliens" starman, cocoon, and batteries not included

Lou Gallucci

Fun fact. My aunt worked for industrial light and magic for this movie and did all the model trees for the scene where they were flying over the forest on the bike.

akaTheBARON

🖤Anybody I date eventually has to say the following to her friends whenever I'm not around and they ask "What the hell do you see in him?" or "Why is he always so moist? He always looks sticky" "You get used to him..." So this reaction really hit home for me. Having seen this, Simone, now that you are familiar with E.T. you should rewatch the Rick and Morty episode "Morty's Mindblowers" just for the end tag scene with Jerry's mindblower since they essentially did "E.T. but if Jerry found E.T" lollll

Fernando Alamán

It's not the first time that I see this movie not connecting with younger generations. Not sure what it is, but clearly you were not feeling the humor, the adventure, the drama, the way it made us feel back in the day. George's body was there, but his mind was in a totally different place. And Simone not crying her heart out was a total surprise. I found this the most unpleasant/disappointing reaction you've done. The constant bitching about ET's appearance ended up being very very annoying. And the cheap jokes in almost every powerful moment...

Monica Alarcon

You gotta watch Paul after watching this come oooon pleeeeze?

Logan Kerlee

This movie was so damn great. Really hits me in the feels! I was in tears at the end. lmao, Simone - E.T. wasn't gross or creepy looking for it's time. It may've not been cute or adorable but I'm glad that it wasn't. When you watch this as a youngster in the early 90's as I did or when this came out - you're blown away by how dramatic and how it all happened. This was one that I really enjoyed as a youngster. Easily one of my childhood faves!

Andrew T

I'm wondering if, as kids of the time, we got over being scared of or creeped out by E.T. quickly because of how quickly the kids in the movie "accepted" E.T. At the same time, I'm wondering if an older audience back then had a harder time getting past the way it looked, like, "it's ugly and moist, therefore it must be feared," kind of thing. It's a question I never never considered as a 12 year old kid at the time. I've seen many reactions to this movie, and it hasn't been the tear-jerker a lot of us older folk remember it being.

Andrew T

The alien in Mac and Me (which I haven't seen, and don't plan to), is a hundred times scarier than E.T. to me. I don't know why.

Tim T—

Something small and silly I love about these 80s movies: The houses look real and lived in. Full of clutter and toys and stuff.

Tyler Mckenzie

I think E.T is cute. Maybe it's just cuz I like Alien creatures, like Stitch.

JayF

70s kid. I was never grossed out by ET. I was grossed out when Spielberg changed the feds guns to hand radios in the 20 year anniversary edition though. Oddly enough he later admitted it was a mistake to make the change. Edit - Other Spielberg movies worth checking out - Close Encounters of the Third Kind Twilight Zone: The Movie (he directed one story) The Color Purple Empire of the Sun (may be of particular interest to George) Always Amistad (almost no reactions to this and it's amazing) Minority Report Munich With the exception of The Color Purple I've seen all of these and they are all good. I've always heard The Color Purple was good but it's just not the type of movie I typically watch.

JoeySnowyNoey

I loved this movie as a kid and still do. It's one of my favorite movies! That being said I did find him to be creepy and weird. Lol not so much now but as a kid some of the moments of the movie would scare me. The beginning of the movie would freak me out but at the end I was emotional and wishing he wouldn't leave. It was strange because I loved ET but also was kinda put off by him. Yoda was the same for me. Love the guy, but also found him creepy.😂

JoeySnowyNoey

I thought he was creepy as a kid, but also loved him. Lol Yoda was the same for me. Found him creepy but also love him.

FranciscoGios

Yes E.T & Star Wars share the same galaxy, the Extraterrestrials have some representatives on the Republic delegation.

MatthewBrown74m

Steven Spielberg films Hook Close encounters Adventures of tintin (with Peter Jackson help) Lincoln Munich Bridges of spies

Grinznmore

Gee George, you felt empathy for sharks and ditched on ET. LOL Anyhow, Starman, with Jeff Bridges, is a great extra-terrestrial movie from the 8o's.

REDR58

It's been mentioned before but you two should really watch Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (director's cut). Also "Empire of the Sun."

Opti_Frog

Ok, radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation, just like microwaves, infrared, (visible) light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays, so "radio speed" is the same as the speed of (any) light. In vacuum.

Blkm44

Steven Spielberg has so many great films. The Color Purple is one of my favorite movies period. As a very young kid, I tapped out around when when E.T. was dying and the men in space suits showed up. Hard noped out at that point and didnt see how the movie ended for years.

Torsten Maekler

Yes, George, in one of the Senate Scenes one of the Pods is filled with the E.T. species. In the scene where he sees Yoda he says "Home, Home" - though it's tough to understand. George and Steven did these as references to each others movies.

gobmob2000

Another Spielberg Film suggestion: AI Artificial Intelligence 2001. The original concept was by Stanley Kubrick but he handed it to Spielberg who, after Kubrick's death, made the film. Some people don't like it, but I feel like that, although not his best film, its probably underrated and definitely worth a watch.

Torsten Maekler

You should put J.J. Abrams homage of E.T., Spielberg and the 80th on your watchlist now: Super 8. You'll gonna like it for sure. There is no sequel to this movie - although there was a novel about E.T. coming home and longing to go back to Earth... .

Chris Devlin

"Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" are two of his better old ones as well. Especially Indy.

Alan Kobb

Your youthful reaction is not very surprising. It was not an uncommon response. As a matter of fact, Spielberg wanted to use M&Ms for the movie, but the company refused because they thought ET was too ugly and would scare kids away. The makers of Reeses Pieces stepped in and they became quite popular. Spielberg called it a face only a mother could love, but I think the idea he was going for was that a kid could get beyond prejiduce and accept ET as a friend despite his looks. In the movie all the kids react with fear initially, but eventually they grow to love ET, and I think by the end of the movie all the fans did also. So, SUCK IT, MARS CANDY CORP!!!

Craig Brennan

They actually wanted Spielberg to do a sequal to E.T. and Spielberg was like no but they were persistent for it and he went and wrote it so dark because the aliens were going to attack and they got the message from Spielberg to not challange him on it being finished so they gave up on the idea of a sequal.

AlimonyMoney

There are some movie that should not have a sequel. Example look what they did with classics like Jurrasic Park and Independence day.

Haye Zeus

I think watching as a child the movie has more of an impact. I love the fact that ET was ugly af. It made him distinct and real. Scary yes. But somehow relatable. Lil Drew Barrymore thought he was real. If you’re a kid he was alive. So it works as a great spectacle for a child. Cause you also see the movie in a child’s pov. Keeping the grown ups hidden. You don’t feel pandered to but instead actually feel the wonder as a kid. As a grown up I feel I more admire the technicality and the look of the film more than really get an emotional connection like when I was a kid. It truly runs on emotion. Which is why the tonal shifts work I think. Cause emotions are at full stop, which is what a kid goes through cause the dummies don’t know how to control their emotions yet.

Jack Urmson

This movie was a legit phenomenon when released in theaters. It outperformed Star Wars for one. It was the highest grossing movie of all time for a while. ET also wasn’t even released on home video until 4 years after its theatrical release, because it kept coming back & reopening to theaters. Which is incredible when you think that the structure of this movie is essentially an art film shot mostly indoors with a modest amount of special effects. The acting, directing, music, and writing is all top tier. As a viewer, it works that ET isn’t cuddly or cute because you grow to love him. It’s ET’a one flaw as a character, but the audience can see past that because his compassion for those around him is sincere.

IncredibleBulk

what's E.T. short for.... he's got no legs

Jesse Coombs

This was great. If you decide to watch more kids movies from the 80's (that are also surprisingly dark), "The Neverending Story" would be a lot of fun.

Wilss

I cry every time I watch this movie and I'm nearly 40. I think you have to have seen it as a kid back in the 80s for it to have the emotional impact that it did. I like that E.T isn't all cute to cater for audiences, you find that you love him through what he's like, and that adds realism for me, plus John Williams score in this always makes me well up with what's going on too.

Ron

Regarding E.T. and his lack of Disney cuteness, Spielberg said that he wanted E.T. to earn the affections of the audience. That's why he looks kinda creepy at first to some. And, yes, E.T. was hidden in the trailers. Spielberg said that one of the reasons me made E.T. (among others) was a suggestion that Francois Truffaut made during the making of Close Encounters. "You should make a movie with kids." The "nice" alien movie you want is Spielberg's, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." There is a sequel of sorts in the form of a reunion commercial for Xfinity from 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQoQ4AFD0kg But, there will never be an in-universe sequel.

REDR58

A little late on commenting here, but I was I surprised they were so surprised at his appearance. I didn’t even think about his appearance until they commented on it and watching their reaction was the first time I’d ever seen the movie. What should we expect some kind of little cartoon character? I don’t know. I think E.T. Looks pretty cool.

REDR58

I kind of agree with you on their constant talking about his appearance. I find it quite surprising they were so fixated on that.
