Yessss this is going to be so much silly fun :D

lol, I mean at that point why not just go full perv and suggest 9 1/2 Weeks? Well at least this introduces them to Michael Douglas (unless they've seen Antman). He was in a shit ton of really entertaining movies during his peak. I would suggest Romancing the Stone and its sequel The Jewel of the Nile, Wallstreet, Black Rain, The Ghost and the Darkness. Sharon Stone you've already seen in Total Recall. She was also very good in Casino. That one has a lot of familiar faces for you two. Edit - I just wanted to clarify my above joke about this movie is not a knock on the movie as it is a good movie. Just wanted to get that in before someone overreacts to it. Edit again - Simone, Jeanne Tripplehorn (Dr Gardner) whom you recognized from a TV series, is one of those actresses that has always seemed to be around but has rarely played the female lead in a movie. She always seems to be good in whatever she is in though.

Odd Thomas

Oh...kay. Well there's definitely stuff you can't show on YT, lol

Odd Thomas

Well now you need to watch Last Action Hero. I won't spoil why.

Dr. Funkenstein

George, to answer your question: Is there a movie that just opens with no studio titles and no opening credits... That would be "Apocalypse Now", you posted on the channel. In fact, the original cut didn't even have end credits until the wide release.

JediLounger

Another movie you guys should check out is Dressed to Kill (1980). Similar twists, and very scary.

I recommended this on Youtube as well, but Hitchcock's "Vertigo" is really good and it was a clear influence to Verhoeven, too, and not just in this film. Hitchcock was the master of psychosexual thrillers whose influence can be seen in SO MANY directors. He's a puzzle piece that makes so many other pieces go "click". Verhoeven and the writer Joe Eszterhas went on to make the notorious film "Showgirls" a few years later. I'm one of the increasing number of weirdoes who think it's not just a campy failure, but an actually well-made film.

redddfer44

Also, easily the best and most accessible guide I've ever read to how to read a movie: the book "Hitchcock/Truffaut" by François Truffaut that's a transcription of a week of interviews between the two.

redddfer44

It's wild to think that Apocalypse Now is, technically speaking, an indie film.

JayF

George, regarding your question about lie detectors, I can't say if they are still used in court and what weight their use still has in court. I can say that even to get a job as an Animal Services Officer in some places you are required to test on a lie detector. Obviously then it would also be used for police agencies and such.

Dioskur

Simone, are you tiny or is that coffee mug huge?

Odd Thomas

The horror movie playing on TV is Hellraiser, I think. The cop smelling the gun is because a recently fired gun will smell strongly of cordite.

Victor

Simone didn't really understand the movie or was overthinking it. Beth's apartment door was faulty, to which Nick mentions that she needs 'to get it fixed'. Would have been easy to plant that information, and then change the tape message.

8bitAndy

My favorite Sharon Stone performance is in The Quick and The Dead. It also happens to be my favorite Sam Raimi movie. Definitely worth a reaction imho.

richard wilkinson

at 1:20..."blue hair women" Through the 1970s women used a product to dye gray hair to make it silver...called "blue rinse". If one used too much it turned the hair bluish. A common sight back then.

David Martin

Star Wars starts right out, and George Lucas was fined by the Directors Guild for not showing the credits, which apparently was a "thing". It ultimately led to his resigning from the Guild, which was a lose-lose for both parties.

Ry Jo

the movie on the TV is one of the Hell raiser movies i think

Nicodemus Archleone

Somehow this feels like when I watched this with my parents as a teenager.

Spacedone

On the blacklight showing up body fluids, I recommend you watch a short comedy skit on Youtube called 'CSI Sperm Detective' :D As for early 90s clubs, I don't know what they were like in the US but the ones I remember were darker, sweatier, louder rave culture or metal culture clubs and everyone had fewer clothes on and danced like idiots on drugs...because most of them were.

Young Blood Priest

Michael Douglas movies are an untapped treasure for reactors. Maybe I haven’t searched well enough but I’ve only seen one reaction to Romancing the Stone.

Young Blood Priest

Lie detectors aren’t admissible in court. They’re unreliable that’s why you never see them in court room dramas.

Spacedone

Sharon Stone has some interesting things to say about shooting this movie in her memoirs.

JayF

Blue haired old ladies is the blue hair reference.

Tay Schumaker

Polygraphs are generally not admitted in court unless everyone agrees to it. They are notoriously unreliabale

Alec S

Fakeout followed by final frame of the ice-pick on the floor wasn't added later. I watched this when it was released in the cinemas in 1992 and the ice-pick was always there. It was always supposed to have an uncertain ending, as far as I understood.

TGrimace

I forgot what a good movie this is. Shame it had the 'leg crossing' scene. It got a lot of press about it when it first came out. But now it's all people remember about it. Even I had dismissed this movie as 'the one with the leg crossing scene', and it was all I remembered about it.

REDR58

2:08 seems to be the R-rated version which is available for free on Amazon Prime for those wondering.

Skinny_Obelix

I remember watching this movie because of that scene, but was pleasantly surprised about the movie itself being better than expected. But no longer being a teenage boy it has dropped a few points. A Michael Douglas movie that would make for a great reaction is The Game by David Fincher. Just a small pronunciation tip on Verhoeven, the OE is pronounces as the oo in oof.

Travis

I love that you guys love the wire so much. You are truly my people.

Jacob King

At some point the reaction community will discover the Quick and the Dead and then they'll all do it. It crosses so many popular themes, genres and actors (Rusty and Leo in their baby forms!!!).

Jacob King

Was also going to suggest Wall Street but that was because I had forgotten The Ghost and the Darkness. What a movie...

Gary Fixler

George - the guy in the boardroom that you said was really dramatic is Stephen Tobolowsky from Groundhog Day (Ned! Ned Ryerson! BING!).

Alex Ch

You know what a really good thriller-related film for a reaction would be? “Presumed Innocent” with Harrison Ford.

Nicodemus Archleone

I think George is talking about how studios will sometimes do blind test screenings and possibly re-shoots if people react negatively to something. Or if studio execs start getting nervous. No idea if that happened here but it's certainly a thing that happens a lot.

Brendan Rafferty

Simone, you recognize Jeanne Tripplehorn (the psychiatrist) from tons of movies and TV shows years after this film, when she was a little older and heavier, most notably as the first wife in the HBO series Big Love…. George, a blue haired woman refers to an old lady with a bad wig

Dustin Duvall

Not to be that person, but the blue hair comes from a rinse elderly women would use on their hair and when done poorly gave the blue tint

redddfer44

When the Dutch singer-songwriter Anouk was big in the 90s, I remember seeing a snippet of an interview of hers where she was asked what she thinks about the director "POHL Ver-HOE-ven". She was like, "?!" and went, "Oh, PA-ool Ver-HOOF-en!" I'm sure I'm butchering the weird way English-speakers use pronunciation guides, but that's when I learned how to say his name. Not that I've ever heard it pronounced correctly after that. I've forgotten what she thought of the director, though.

Alex Ch

My personal conclusion has always been that Beth did shoot her husband - and possibly kill the professor. After all, Catherine Trammell was involved with her - and Catherine only falls for killers.

Alan Kobb

They removed 45 seconds of sex to get an R-rating instead of NC-17 in the US, but the movie released for video or streaming was the glorious "full-frontal" NC-17 rated movie. I remember I wanted to watch this and my date wanted to watch Rocky-3. She won, and we never dated again, but at least I never had to watch the watered-down version. Lie detector tests are admissable in the US only if both sides agree to their use, which efectively means that they are not admissable. They're not bullshit, but they are not 100% accurate either, and they are not a "red-line" kind of test. The results never say absolutely lie or truth, but depend on an expert's interpretation. Think about it. If you make a poorly timed fart, the embarressment might be seen as a lie.

James Hadden

So…I needn’t bother watching Gone Girl now then? 😁 Rightly or wrongly, for me the two signs pointing to Catherine’s guilt during the conclusion was the cop saying Beth’s answering machine tape was unused (so swapped out) and Catherine being in Nick’s apartment without a key (so capable of planting evidence). I thought the final ice pick shot was too heavy handed and would have left a much more enjoyable talking point for everyone after watching without it. I personally think Catherine was the stalker and killed everyone, including her parents, and Beth was completely innocent.

Keerit Thind

I think you guys should consider Body of Evidence with Madonna and Willem

Keerit Thind

Defoe for cinecringe. It's soooo fantastically bad. A horrendous wish.com doppelganger of Basic Instinct. The zipper sound effect in the elevator scene. 👀👀

Brad Lowry

In regards to Lie Detector tests, I love the line from The Closer's titular character, Brenda Johnson about hearsay testimony (I think) by one her crew after he said, "Great! Now it's not evidence." Chief Johnson trenchantly responded, "Of course it's evidence, it just can't be used in court." I think lie detector evidence is the same it's evidence, it's just not admissible evidence in court. Of course, if you refuse a lie detector test or if you fail a lie detector test that fact "somehow" makes it's way to the press. If you fail a lie detector test, well that is one more example of how devious you are.

pinkdino99

You are criminally underserving Sharon Stone. Casino is the spiritual successor to Goodfellas and has Stone going tooth and nail with Robert de Nero. Also The Quick & The Dead - awesome Sam Raimi western with Sharon Stone whom also produced in which she personally introduces two actors into the world - Leonardo di Caprio and Russel Crowe ! Nice one Sharon.

Jay Perry

Basic Instinct 2 is a must see. It answers the happily ever after question while another murderous adventure in London, with Cathrine. After the boob job.

Jay Perry

Don't forget, there's also an alternate ending floating around.
