Thanks to this movie, my wife and I still tell each other to “chut up” to this very day

(we do not reply with the movie response, just to be clear, lol)

This movie was a big part of my adolescence. The 80s indie soundtrack. The weird, off-kilter vibe. Perfect for a maladjusted goth kid. Also encouraged me to seek out more challenging films too.

One of my favorite films, but also one of the more unsettling films about time travel. It’s like antithesis of Back to the Future. Also it gave us one of the more unintentional hilarious lines in, “Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.”

I loved seeing your reaction to it. Outside of all the crazy time travel stuff there is so much warmth, love and funny moments in this film. I like how George has a keen eye for puzzling it all together and Simone's connection to the underlying relationships really made an impact. There are indeed a lot of different theories about Donnie Darko, just remember there is no 'wrong' theory. I'm interested to see what your further thoughts are in the CineReview episode, once things fall into place a bit more. Thanks for watching the film, it was a great reaction!

One of the worst gaps in quality between the theatrical and director's cuts. The director's cut is almost unwatchable and the theatrical is a classic. A fascinating case study.

George: "was that something like a jet engine?" Me: ehh...can you see the future George?

Ooh you guys should check out Southland Tales for a Cinecringe video. Written and directed by same writer/director of Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly. It has a few big names in it and... it certainly is a movie.

I believe this movie is a modern retelling of the Last Temptation of Christ, but instead of God they use physics. The director even hints at this by having that movie title on a marque. The main character has a destiny they are going to die but they chose not to and get to live their life past that moment. They see how the world would be better if they’d died so they accept their fate and go back to that moment and chose death, or overcome the last temptation. The guardian Angel, or the bunny, character represents Satan who tricks the main character into choosing the more horrible world, seeing the chaos spread and loved ones die, that was the results of them living.

I just started watching, but I wanted to say I was holding my breath through the entire intro until I knew for sure you were watching the theatrical version. I am sure there are fans of the director's cut out there, which is a valid position to take, but I think it overexplains some things to the overall movie's disadvantage. Keeping things vague and mysterious helps shroud some rough story patches sprinkled throughout.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Its been awhile but I don’t remember the DC being unwatchable, it just looses some of the mystique that the theatrical cut had by going more in-depth with the lore.

I'm one of like a dozen people that actually like Southland Tales, as flawed and odd as it is. It's definitely unique and what a nutty ensemble cast! But I think it's got some really great humor and inventiveness, and some super interesting performances. Really love the 3 leads, Johnson, Gellar, & Scott...Timberlakes insane musical sequence. I mean, I'm not oblivious: I totally get and don't argue with why people don't dig it and why it'd fit on the cringe channel haha Just saying, there are a few of us who like it for the mess it is, no judgment or confusion meant to those who disagree=)

Kokofoko

Good luck in finding your names in the patreon credits at the end. Wtf lol...

I became a Patron in part just to suggest this movie. So over the moon it got picked! Thanks for voting guys!

This movie is special to me. I first saw it back in 2018. It was the last new movie I saw days before I had to put my dog down I’d had for 16 years. Always makes me think of him when I see this movie

Only thing that sucks in the alternate path he chose to save his mom, sister and would be GF, is the pedophile wasn't caught.

hes in a pocket dimension ever since his death. the entire movie is him accepting that he had died and had to die and needing to make the choice to go. thematically its about fate and self sacrifice, thats why the jesus reference. the evil dead movies in order are: evil dead, evil dead 2, army of darkness. yes you need to watch them all, they are all good for different reasons. also, double back to consider doing the never ending story.

michael clarke

this entire movie was almost an accident. they had daily rewrites and everyone was flying by the seat of their pants. thats why, although creating one of the most intelligent films ever made, the director hasnt been able to do anything even slightly as competent. big warning DO NOT WATCH the sequel.

Gary Fixler

5 extra upvotes for The Neverending Story. That's a wonderful 80s classic, up there with The Goonies and The Princess Bride.

On the official website, that was released together with the theatrical cut, there were a number of easter eggs, such as some pages of the Philosophy of Time Travel and news articles from after the events in the film. One of these news articles, dated October 12, describes the suicide of Jim Cunningham. These are the first lines of the article "Celebrity author and motivational speaker Jim Cunningham was found dead early yesterday morning on the fourteenth hole of the Sarasota Heights Country Golf Club golf course. A foursome of golfers discovered Cunningham's body early in the morning. Cause of death appears to have been from a self-inflicted gunshot wound." The website is not online anymore, but you can still read the news articles if you go to http://archive.hi-res.net/donniedarko/news/index3.html If you replace 'index3' with 'index1' it links to the first article, all the way up to 'index7' for the last article.

I don't know where you got that information, but the excellent documentary Deus Ex Machina: The Philosophy of Donnie Darko suggests the script was done a long time beforehand and since they had to do block shooting everything was carefully laid out so they could shoot the whole film in (ironically) 28 days. I think the biggest change happened on the editing floor, as they had to cut 25 minutes from the original cut that premiered on Sundance Festival. The documentary I mentioned is currently free to watch on Tubi.tv if you're in the US. It gives a really good insight of the long way this film had to make to become the cult classic it is today.

This movie was all anyone talked about when it came out. I was in middle school. Never thought the world would just forget about it.

The actress who play Samantha Darko (the younger sister) is Samara in The Ring.
