The thumbnail does not match this movies vibe at all hahahahha. I’m gonna save this one for when the mood hits cuz it is not a first thing in the morning kinda flick.

Dahyul

Thank you!!

Jay

Fuck Yeah, I haven't seen this in years, phenomenal movie!

Martin

Thank you guys for doing this one. It’s my favorite foreign film ever.

MacGuffinStuff

Oh nice, this movie never wins polls but it's so good, the narrative style is very cool. People I don't think give foreign movies enough of a chance unless there's a buzz about a specific one, but there are so many really good ones. Another one I really love that few people seem to know is Hombres Armados, Men With Guns (1997, not the other one), which was actually made by an American writer/director, John Sayles.

Fernando Alamán

First, good luck George with the inevitable moving. Hope it goes as smooth as possible. Second, oh man, first "Let The Right One In" and then "City Of God" in a matter of a few days. This is fucking awesome. So happy it didn't scare you to schedule two foreign language movies so close to each other, given the low views they tend to have. I know you need the highest viewership possible to make the channel profitable, but I also think it's much needed in the long run to have a reasonable diversity in origin/language, genre and date of the movies. It gives the channel a total new appeal, even if it's only a few classic/auteur/foreign movies every year. I'm gonna watch this reaction right now. I'm guessing you reference "The Wire" a couple of times, at least. And I'm sure you loved it. The is no other possible way.

Eric Santiago

As a Brazilian, you guys have no idea how thrilled I am to see you reacting to this classic from our cinema. Being born in Rio de Janeiro makes it even more fascinating, just like you recognize some locations in movies, every time I watch this film, I'm pointing out the places I know. It's always fun to see someone from outside reacting to this story that has some exaggerations and poetic licenses, but a great part of it is real. The actor who plays Mané Galinha (Knockout Ned) is a Brazilian singer. For those interested in Brazilian music, his name is Seu Jorge, and he's phenomenal!

Vector

Ohhh, interesting! Do I hear Elite Squad next?!

Alec S

Yes, finally! Hopefully more foreign language movies to come ...

Patrick

Damn George, moving is so god damn stressful. I feel for ya, my guy. Literally nothing stresses me out more than the idea of having to move. I live a relatively minimalist lifestyle just incase I ever have to.

Patrick

When I visited Brazil, I was told to carry a fake phone and wallet just incase I got robbed lol I didn't, I just used common sense...but parts of Rio can get suuuuper sketchy at night.

MacGuffinStuff

Wow I can't find Hombres Armados anywhere, that's a bummer, it's one of those sort of melancholy but poignant and beautiful movies. It's about a relatively privileged doctor from the city in a Central American country who goes looking for his former students, who went out to help poor people in the countryside and who've disappeared, and basically he discovers a lot about his country he'd never believed or understood before.

Young Blood Priest

This was a great movie. Thanks for introducing it to me.

Jay

Ned's actor is Seu Jorge, he's a famous musician from Brazil. He's also in The Life Aquatic, one of my favourite Wes Anderson movies.

Tiago Borges

Unfortunately, the situation got worse. Rio's favelas are run by drug traffickers or militias, who have a strong sway over politicians and the military. And to make matters worse, on top of that there is the mafia, which practically dominates the entire city, in every way. The mayor of Rio is practically an ornament with barely any power.

Tiago Borges

To have a better idea on what happened next on Rio crime landscape, add to the next pools Elite Squad, which is another great Brazilian movie

Steve Mercier

Hands down one of the best movies ever made..."It was like a message from God: 'Honesty doesn't pay, sucker.'"

Shonnicus

So excited for this one idk if its streaming on one of subscription, but I will Rent this one if need too.

Eric Santiago

I just finished watching your reaction, and as always, it was fantastic. It's a shame that you 'miss out' on one of the best parts of this movie, which is the soundtrack. The music means a lot! Oh, and just to remind you, because it's a moment that might not stand out for you: at the beginning of the film, Li'l Dice receives his new name from a spiritual entity that warns him not to have sex while wearing the protection he was given. Li'l Ze rapes Knockout Ned's wife with the protection around her neck. From that moment on, everything goes wrong for him. One of the few films by Fernando Meirelles that I recommend is called 'Blindness,' based on a novel by José Saramago

Grumblefunk

Thanks for this one, amazing film, had to dig out my old DVD copy to watch along

michael murray

I'd completely forgotten that there was a film adaptation of 'Blindness'! The novel is astounding, but also one of those that i just couldn't see how it would translate to film. I seem to remember really mixed reviews as well. I'd also forgotten that Fernando Meirelles directed 'The Constant Gardener' which is another great film, so maybe i should give Blindness a chance now. Also, i know this is a film/tv channel, but anyone wanting a book recommendation should check out Blindness by Jose Saramago, or any of his books really.

Middy

Maybe you caught this in the edit, George, but Shaggy straight up said "it wasn't me" less than a minute after you mentioned it and you didn't notice!

Brendan Rafferty

Absolutely. I was a little put off by the name of the film because it seemed cheesy. But Elite Squad is absolutely incredible and a perfect companion to City of God.

Shonnicus

Benny was the coolest Hood in the City of God. I think the dynamic between Benny and Lil Z is they really best friends and Benny had that ability to call bullshit on Lil Z. Lil Z of course didn't want him to leave and when Benny died you could say this is when Lil Z became unhinged. Hard to say if Lil Z would have killed Benny if he stayed or left. If you are talking just as a movie narrative to infuse drama then you would have the classic 2 friends square off. I still think Benny would have left and Lil Z, the psychopath he is would have let him.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Just some fun facts to add: “Knockout Ned” is the name given to the character “Mané Galinha” for the English subtitles as his original nickname would translate to Mané (Manuel) the Chicken. This was changed of course since chicken has a negative connotation for a coward, in Brasil it can refer to promiscuity, in Mané’s case I guess he’s good with women. This also adds to the chicken motif throughout the movie. Most of the actors in the film were first timers from favelas who were hired for their authenticity and the lack of Black Brasilian actors available at the time. Smaller details like the prayer before the gang war starts and the mention of never having taken a hot bath were taken from their experiences. And yes, if you rewatch the robbery scene where Ned kills the sercurity guard you do see his son, Otto, in the background.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

And like others, I would also like to thank y’all for a few more non-English movie reactions as of late :) . They are some of my favorites from yours as my introduction to the channel was from the Oldboy and Pan’s Labyrinth reactions. I understand they don’t get the same level of audience as Shrek or The Wolf of Wall Street, not to dismiss those movies of course as I’m just as much a fan of those. But I think they’re a great addition to your back catalogue and I implore more viewers and people in general to progress past the hurdle of subtitles.

This reaction video made me rewatch City of God for the first time in years. Such an amazing movie. So thanks for that! I also just noticed that Knockout Ned was played by the one and only Seu Jorge. That's so cool!
