Funny That

Now this is a paring bound to make me even more hungry than the film would on its own. Thankfully this is arriving at lunchtime in the UK so some bolognese and cuppa tea will do just grand. Many thanks for an unexpected holidays treat/present.

Fernando Alamán

Thanks for the extra content and the effort you put on the subtitles. I haven't seen this movie and but been willing to. Let's do it.

The first time I watched this movie it surprised the hell out of me. So wholesome, so much more than I expected, and so "real' feeling. Watching it now with you and your dad was a lot of fun! Me and my dad unfortunately have absolutely no interests in common. So this movie hits me a bit; the type of relationship I wish would be possible if either of us had tried to be a bit more open to what the other was into. It just never happened. Now he's too far into the "old and stubborn" part of his life. Getting him to do anything outside his fixed routine just leads to annoyance and arguments, unfortunately.

This is awesome, but I think the video timing is off. The embedded movie video is progressing faster than my streaming copy.

Onno Smits

It was working 100% fine for me. Sounds like your copy of the movie is running slower. Probably a NTSC/PAL conversion issue. So your movie is running at 24fps whilst the one from George is running at 25fps. Try opening George's reaction on YouTube (not just embedded in Patreon) by clicking on the video title. Then press F12 (or Ctrl+Shift+i) to open the console, and copy paste this into the console command line at the bottom and press Enter: $('video').playbackRate = 0.96; That will set the video speed to 96% of normal. If that's too slow, make the number slightly larger (e.g. 0.98) or vice-versa until you've got it perfectly fine. Maybe report back which streaming service you are watching it on (and in which country) and what number ended up working for you, to help out anyone else having the same issue. 👍 I have this issue the other way around a lot when I'm watching stuff on HBO MAX here in The Netherlands, and I need to use a rate of 1.04 to get it to sync.

Great fun thanks both of you. If you are interested in more Kitchen/Food films might I suggest Dinner Rush from 2000 :)

I'm so glad that this happpened. It seemed like a good fit for you and your dad and was I pleasantly surprised when this came up. Thanks!

This is one of my favorite "I'm in a crappy mood and need something fun to watch" movies. It's super predictable but I love how much attention to detail they put into it to make the cooking look right.

So glad this won, Chef is one of my favorite movies. I do wish Simone got to see this one too, she would enjoy it.

JLee

Thought I was smart ordering food just before starting the watch-a-long... Now I'm 1 hour 14min in eating my food and realizing I am so dumb for not ordering cubanos.

Unfortunately it seems that this is a PAL region copy you’re watching. it gets out of sync pretty quickly and continues to slip. This happened to another reactor I like, Mary Cherry with her copy of the SnyderCut. you need to slow the ENTIRE video down 0.9587231700605393x. I know that sounds crazy but that moves the movie to 24fps instead of 25fps. OR people can rip the video, install VLC and put this into their command line or Run program: “ C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --rate 0.9587231700605393” Then load the reaction. That will sync it. I don’t know if you can like… re-render the video at that speed or whatever but that’s the fix. IF the video is actually at 25fps and not 24. Thanks. Sorry if this sounds like i’m whiny or bitchy or whatever. I just wanted to help.

Glad y'all watched this together. It's an absolute favorite of mine. This movie played a big role in getting me into cooking - which I guess is kinda sad seeing as my Dad also was a restaurateur (mostly before I was born though). I did wonder about the colloquial / english+spanish language humor and how it translate. (its also very wordy so I know that can be difficult subtitled. Specifically, I'm very curious how John Leguizamo calling Bobby Cannavale an "amuse-douche" would translate to Cantonese... 😅

I loved this one so much! Honestly, when I watched this movie in theaters I liked it but didn't love love it; but seeing George's dad's face light up, and hearing all the comments about what's it really like, and the differences, and how he looks at dishes from every angle when he goes out to eat, and all the respect he has for cooking for others (I loved his take that we should look at a dish as an offering of an idea) made the movie so much better. That's why I also don't think these would be lost on him if he watches them with you, because even if he doesn't get all the minute details, you can explain things, and watching movies (or music, or paintings, or architecture, culture, food...) with someone who knows what they're talking about is always great! Just like I learned so much from George's commentary watching Red, for example, even the specifically Canadian things that someone like me, in another continent, wouldn't notice. So I hope you do more of these, and not limit yourselves to war ones. This was a joy!

Koonce

I had such a blast watching this with y'all! Thank you George and George's Dad for the excellent video.

Great info! Sadly, I watch the reactions on my iPad and unless I jailbreak it and install custom code, I don’t know a way to adjust playback speed to a specific rate; only have the preset options in the app which go in .25 segments faster/slower.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that there's no real "darkest before dawn" moment where they're all at each others throats and their relationships are at risk. They don't have a big blowout where they screw up a big food truck appearance. It's a pretty positive movie all around, just a fun experience.

Patrick

I feel ya. I'm the same with my mom. We literally have NOTHING in common. Even when she watches TV, it's literally nothing but Law and Order/NCIS/CSI or some other cop/detective show.

Patrick

George, what Province in China is your family from?

REDR58

Great reaction with you dad. Lots of fun. Bit of trivia, Carl and his son are watching “Iron Man” at the movies.

Patrick

Yeah I think I've seen it 4 times now. It's just a wholesome and fun movie with tons of great food porn.

Mitchell Bowker

I would love to see your father react to more food/chef/culinary arts films next time he visits you for reactions. Your father had a lot to say about the topic, also easier and less emotionally taxing to watch then war films, at least! The film BIG NIGHT (1996) is considered one of the best of the genre.

Odd Thomas

Jon Favreau has a show on Netflix, The Chef Show, where he goes around and cooks with his friends.

Lola Lirola

RDJ even makes a cameo, and I was surprised they didn't seem to recognize him! (although I watched the youtube edit, so maybe they did in the long versión?)

Jesse Coombs

This was wonderful. Your dad is great. It was really cool to hear his insights, and George's as well, as two veterans of the restaurant world. Here's the part of my comment where I recommend more chef/foodie movies and TV...

Jesse Coombs

Definitely "Big Night". Oliver Platt is also in this one. It's about an Italian restaurant and the two brothers who run it. Beyond that would be "The Bear", an amazing show about family and cooking and generational trauma. I know that sounds like a lot, but the show is a masterpiece. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention "Midnight Diner", an anthology show about a late night cafe and how food can bring us all together. Even if you guys don't react to these, I hope other patrons check them out.

Logan Kerlee

Oh my gosh, George! This upload was perfect. I really enjoyed watching this! Your dad's great, love his personality and positivity. Watching this was also nice because it opened up my eyes to a sliver of his life and a bit of his work history. :) I know nothing about cooking - so I liked hearing you two talk about it. Great movie, I never watched this before. Thank you for choosing this! :) It was fantastic!

Lyle Morgan

This is great with your dad, but I'd love to see this one with Simone as well. I know that would break protocol, but I feel like it's so heartfelt that it's right up her alley as well.
